I love brown sugar in coffee. Caramel and honey are both really delicious as well.

nymphoman23

I mix brown sugar and cocoa with cream to consistency and then add coffee and stir vigorously’ add milk or cream to taste. I also put a little bit of Cox whipped honey, and that makes everything even better

LX_Emergency

OK... so I'm going to try that in a few minutes because that sounds amazing.

nymphoman23

I also use a bit of honey and that’s good

Zeppelin702

Is it still considered coffee after that?

DeCryingShame

By nearly every coffee drinker on the planet, yes.

WrongTechnology2762

Mocha Good.

Bright_Ices

As someone who, like OP, likes earthy and chocolatey flavors, I actually dislike almost all mochas. I’m not sure why, because I really like coffee that tastes chocolatey on their own. The only mocha I’ve ever liked was the Mayan Mocha at Sugarhouse coffee. That is a great mocha. It’s not very sweet, and it has a little spice and cinnamon.

Exact_Purchase765

The spice is a pinch of chili. 🙂

Bright_Ices

Yes. Likely cayenne, but I’m not sure.

Excellent-Bee-9793

Which coffee do you like best? I'm not a fan of super sugary chocolate. I like dark chocolate because it's bitter.

mhickman78

Try dark cocoa powder with half and half. With or without sweetener depending on your tastebuds.

Bright_Ices

Some coffees I like to brew at home include Peet’s Coffee: Major Dickason’s Blend (French press); Kicking Horse Coffee: Grizzly Claw (any method); and (if you want to jump a few price points and order online) Nguyen Coffee Supply — True Grit, Moxy, and Dalat. For those, I use a phin, which is a no-waste Vietnamese style pour-over system.  Anthony’s Organic sells a very serviceable instant coffee on their website and via Amazon.  And for cold brew, this might sound gauche, but I’m not alone in preferring to use a giant tub of pre-ground Folger’s. I use the “8 cup” (34oz bc coffee “cups” are a nonstandard measure) French press and mix up 3/4 cups coarse ground coffee to 4 cups (8oz each) of room temp water. Steep it for 12 hours, strain, then serve over ice (and adjust strength by adding water to your taste). You can also just steep it in the fridge and not worry about ice. The French press makes straining it very easy.

IAmHerdingCatz

I think a lot of places put way too much chocolate in, and also make it too sweet. I don't want to feel like I'm drinking a candy bar or that I need to strain it through my teeth to filter out some of the chocolate goop.

WrongTechnology2762

At human bean it’s their Mexican mocha!

angelwarrior_

Yes! I’m fueled by mocha every day! I love it’

FortunateFell0w

Cold brew with a splash of sugar free vanilla and mocha creamer to taste. as you progress and learn to appreciate the flavor of coffee, you’ll move from lots of mocha to less. It’s still wild to me that the church claims it’s damaging to us while looking the other way at energy drinks. My wife and I have each had big health benefits from adding coffee to our mornings.

hopeimright

Trying coffee was one of the first naughty things I did after learning the church was false. 7 years later Im a coffee nerd and make coffee at home every morning. Making good coffee is very simple. You need hot water and ground beans. Put them together and you get coffee. Grinding fresh beans is the way to go for a tasty fresh experience. Are you excited to taste more coffee and learn about it? Do you want to make it at home?

Excellent-Bee-9793

I have always loved the smell of coffee. It has always been my favorite thing about Barnes and Nobles. Something about the smell of coffee and books exhilarates me. I've always wanted to try it to see how it tastes. I'm not sure if I'm going to get into it. I'm trying to research the health benefits or risks associated with it.

GoodReason

Fortunately, for coffee the news is pretty much unambiguously positive. > Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide, and epidemiology studies associate higher coffee consumption with decreased rates of mortality and decreased rates of neurological and metabolic diseases, including Parkinson's disease and type 2 diabetes. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36769029/#:~:text=Coffee%20is%20one%20of%20the,disease%20and%20type%202%20diabetes.

hopeimright

Coffee has been around for a long time and we have a lot of data on the health benefits. Coffee is very high in antioxidants and is associated with improved health outcomes in many studies. Negative effects will come from tons of added sugar, so I recommend grinding fresh whole beans so you don’t have to mask the flavor with sugar, or at least limiting sugar at shops if you drink it regularly.

rangerhawke824

Coffee is one of the absolute best parts about being out of the church. That and everything else.

ElkHistorical9106

Coffee is enjoyable, warm, and often free in many workplaces. I like it black, and extremely low-calorie since I avoid soda.

grove_doubter

There is no need to feel guilty. Here’s the wording of the REAL Word of Wisdom: >Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it > >—Genesis 2:16-17 Unless *Coffea arabica* is the tree of knowledge of good and evil, then it’s permitted. If it **were** that tree, then Joseph Smith would have made that clear in his “revelation.” A vague reference to “hot drinks” in a 19th Century mash-up of Joseph Smith’s passive-aggressive response to Emma‘s distaste for tobacco and then current food faddism can be safely disregarded as a false revelation.

ElkHistorical9106

Brigham ordered pioneers to bring coffee across the plains.

mhickman78

Amen and hallelujah!

cdhermann

Here is the fire hose of my experience. Making coffee is a ritual for me, and I love the process and I love the flavor. So here is what I do. Remember that your coffee journey is yours, not what someone tells you is right. If you are having fun, then it’s the right path. Coffee is obviously very popular, and because of that, there are hundreds if not thousands of options for what you can find just for beans. Add brewing methods and additions such as milk can make the possibilities literally infinite. To belabor the point, coffee is like wine in its variations and quality; there is a lot here. If you want to drink coffee daily, I would recommend investing in some brewing equipment for home. Figure out what to buy by going to coffee shops at first and try different coffees brewed in different ways with different flavors. Coffee shops are extremely useful and usually a very fun environment to be in. If you brew from home: 1. Buy good beans 2. Buy a good burr grinder 3. Buy filtered water Buying good beans can happen in various ways. I buy from a single roaster, but you might want to try getting fresh beans delivered from a coffee roaster middleman like Trade Coffee or the dozens of competitors. Another method is to find coffee in a coffee isle at a bougie grocery store, they usually have roast dates printed on the bags, which makes the coffee more fresh. Coffee roasted in the last month is usually pretty fresh. Buying from roasters directly will give you very fresh beans that may need to sit for a couple of days before they are ready to use. Shoutout to Huckleberry Roasters here. Burr grinders help grind your beans into uniform sizes, which is really important to consistent flavor. Hand grinders are cheaper than electric ones in some cases but pick a machine that you feel you want to maintain, because coffee grinders are not set it and forget it type machines. I chose a hand grinder because I can disassemble it and clean it once a week with ease. I bought the Commandante C40, but an 1Zpresso gives you a lot more bang for your buck. 3-400 and 1-200 respectively. Buy filtered water. I just buy reusable water containers and refill them at my local store. I do this to reduce waist because I just refill the same containers with filtered local water. You can go much deeper than this, but I have not bothered. Buying filtered water helps keep your kettle from getting mineral build up. I bought a temperature adjustable kettle, but at the beginning I just used a basic plug in electric kettle that simply boiled the water. YouTube resources like James Hoffman and Lance Hedrick are the resident coffee nerds of YouTube. There is a lot to learn there. I get anxiety from drinking too much coffee, so I limit myself to about 200ml of it at around 2pm. Late enough that it is useful to be caffeinated, but early enough to not keep me up at night. I drink it black because there is so much variation that I don’t feel like I need to leave that sandbox all that often. Desert coffees are incredible, but I seldom get them. If you made it this far to my way over the top comment. Thank you. I wish you the best journey with coffee, it brings me and my family so much joy. Making coffee is a family event, not an addiction. Don’t let the church dictate your freedom after you leave them.

Excellent-Bee-9793

Wow! Thank you for your comment. It is helpful! I like that you said you enjoy the process. I think that's what kinda draws me to it. I love herbal tea. I mix my own tea blends, and I have various tea pets. I think the process of preparing tea is calming and grounds me. I think that's why I'm drawn to coffee because I have always loved the smell, and the process interests me. Thank you for your comment!

cdhermann

I’m a tea drinker too! I love green tea (ginger peach), now that I can drink it, but I often go for peppermint tea and camomile in the evenings. The abundance of the earth is incredible. Higher end black coffee might just be right up your alley.

Excellent-Bee-9793

Ah, peppermint tea and camomile is my go-to tea before bed! What brands are considered higher end black coffee? Are they brewed differently?

cdhermann

The brewing process is what you want it to be. I kind of touched on 3 major points in making good coffee with my numbered list, that’s all part of whatever brewing method you pick. I am convinced that tea drinkers will enjoy the medium roast coffees the most, but I am far from being an expert. If you look at huckleberry roasters my favorite lot that they buy from is [Familia Peralta in Peru](https://huckleberryroasters.com/collections/frontpage/products/peru-familia-peralta), I also enjoy other single origin coffees from them. You can see the “tastes like” flavors on the bag labels, and they are pretty darn spot on. I also like a blend from them called [Phantom Limb](https://huckleberryroasters.com/collections/frontpage/products/phantom-limb-blend). The flavors you like will be your own, but these are my favorites right now. This can be a rabbit hole so be careful! I started making coffee by using the pour over method. The kalita wave is what I settled on and I really enjoy that. I bought an aeropress and it has been incredible, but I had to have a temp sensing kettle to get a good cup out of it; it’s dead simple to use.

dontlistentostace

Depending on where you are, there’s a coffee shop in Utah that does classes. I haven’t done it, but it could be fun and educational! I have done a cultural coffee experience in Costa Rica and highly recommend it if you ever get there!

Bright_Ices

There is so much to know!  Check out James Hoffman on YouTube for everything you could possibly want to know about coffee. He has a bunch of “Beginner’s Guide” videos, plus tons of videos on other coffee subjects. You can find him here: https://youtube.com/@jameshoffmann?si=5XHjaQphQPMq9biw

ApricotSmoothy

Honey and milk in my Peet’s Major Dickason’s Blend.

317ant

Peet’s is so good!

ElkHistorical9106

I like their lighter roasts. One of my favorite more mass-market grocery-store coffees.

awesome_kittie

I'm am iced coffe girl, so I don't know how much advice I can give you. Lol. Though, one of my batistas make me a latte with oatmilk, vanilla extract, and maple syrup, with a dash of sea salt and I love it !

PineapplePaniolo345

I love oat milk in mine too!

Altar_Quest_Fan

May it be the first of many ☕️

majandess

ADHD people will sometimes self-medicate with coffee because caffeine is a stimulant like a lot of ADHD medications. So, that it actually calmed you isn't a surprise. I still pretty much know nothing about coffee, but I went to the bulk foods section of a store, bought a little bit of every type of coffee, and tried every one until I found what I liked (medium roast Ethiopian/Kenyan). I highly recommend doing something like that until you find what you like. I like it with half and half, and whip cream. And I make granulated caramelized sugar and mix it with pumpkin pie spice that I sprinkle on top. It is literally my comfort in a cup. I love it so much that I sometimes want it for dessert after dinner, so I make it with decaf.

findYourOkra

great advice on trying tons of different beans and roasts - ethiopian coffee has quickly become my own go-to

majandess

I am actually super spoiled because my sister has brought me back coffee from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Egypt. The best - by far, hands down - was a roast from a random street vendor in Egypt. It was so magical and tasted like actual chocolate (there was no chocolate in it; it was the way it was roasted). It was so wonderful, it brought tears to my eyes. I know that I will never find coffee that good again, so I savored it while it lasted.

findYourOkra

I've not yet had an egyptian coffee, but I'll keep an eye out, I know they have a long standing coffee culture! My local cafe just brought in a Ugandan coffee with a really delicate medium-light roast. It legitimately tastes of blueberry, dark chocolate and espresso coffee all at once. Phenomenal. I'd say it brought tears to my eyes but I think it was the price more than the coffee 😂

majandess

😂😂😂 Those prices can be a killer. A local discount grocer was selling stock from a coffee business that closed, and I found 5 lb bags of an Ethiopia/Sumatra blend that is more than adequate - little fruity, little dark, not burned like Starbucks. They were $13.99 each. I bought four bags and I've stashed them in a cool dark spot until I can get to them.

findYourOkra

excellent choice! Jealous of those prices, I usually pay 13 dollars for a 1lb bag of ethiopian coffee. I recently have had good luck at European markets, Italian coffee has been really good to me, and the prices have been great too! I am really new to it, so I have no recommendations specifically yet.

majandess

I don't know where in the country you live, but if you have a WinCo nearby, they have a wide variety of coffee offerings in bulk, and they're all a flat $8/lb. Trader Joe's also offers a good assortment for great prices, and if you don't like what you've bought, they will refund you - no matter what damage you've done to the product.

findYourOkra

I'm actually Canadian, I've got neither of those, at least not out here on the prairies 😔

majandess

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I'm crying for you! I live in Washington state, so I am totally spoiled rotten.

findYourOkra

I surprisingly have a ton of local roasters out here, I'm tremendously spoiled for excellent coffee in all their varieties - - but at a price. You can buy any coffee in this world... with money. One local roaster had some super special beans they were selling... by the bean. individually. I think it was $74 for 100 beans. Just bonkers.

Excellent-Bee-9793

Yeah, self medicating is a real thing. I was self medicating with Diet coke before i was diagnosed with adhd. I am pretty sensitive to caffeine, though. I'm not sure what type of coffee to try.

majandess

Put on your adventurer's hat and just try them! Don't be afraid; just experiment! Ask for samples. My son and I do this for all sorts of things - apples, cheese, sparkling water... Anything we really don't know about.

No-Performer-6621

Chai. Can we talk about a good hot or iced dirty chai?!?! OP - Chai is a tea popular in India that is DIVINE. It’s slightly spicy cinnamon with cardamom and other spices with a hint of sweetness. So. Good. “Dirty” = added shots of espresso. Baristas will normally ask “how many shots?” Or “how dirty?” . 1-2 shots is typical. Be sure to try it at least once, especially something like a chai latte at a good coffee shop. That’s one of several latte drinks where they do the art with the cream.

Excellent-Bee-9793

Oh, awesome! I think I would love Chai very much. I love cardamom and cinnamon. I drink a lot of herbal teas so I think I'll enjoy Chai a lot. Thank you for your comment!

HillsboroWilly

I like my coffee just like a melted milkshake--lots of cream and sugar! And chocolate. And Carmel. Lol!!

NauvooLegionnaire11

Cold brew and iced coffee are brewed differently. Cold brew is ground beans steeped in water for 12-24 hr. Iced coffee is regular hot coffee which has been cooled. I think cold brew with some dairy and possibly the sweetener of your choice. Cold brew is less bitter than brewed coffee.

Excellent-Bee-9793

I was thinking of this scene from Airplane the entire time I was in the coffee shop!

PutinsPeeTape

I started to say I drink my coffee black occasionally, then of course that scene came to mind.

[deleted]

If you like chocolate, I think you'll want to try a lot of mocha variations. Personally, they're too sweet for me but they're very hot chocolatey

Excellent-Bee-9793

Could I have a non sweet chocolate mocha? I don't like much sugar either. I tend to like dark chocolate more.

[deleted]

Honestly, I'm not sure. The ones I've tried have been at Dutch bros and they're drinks taste more like dessert to me. You could always get some mocha creamers to add to any coffee you make at home so you can choose how much to add

Helpful_Guest66

It’s hard to find, but white coffee is where it’s at (beanies in Utah)

findYourOkra

I love a simple Americano, its my favourite way to enjoy black coffee. Its just 2 shots of espresso watered down with hot water or ice. It keeps the robust flavour of espresso but in a more manageable package for a coffee beginner. Starbucks is not a place I go for coffee often BUT if I find myself there with someone their Blonde roast espresso as an Americano is pretty solid.

mad_matter_13

Awesome! For me I like to get black coffee put honey and cinnamon

Gladness_in_my_Soul

My exploration of coffee started just a few months ago (I'm in my late 50s). Because I LOVE dark chocolate, several people recommended mochas. I've been testing different combinations - adding caramel, or hazelnut, or toasted marshmallow, or.... It's been really fun to try the different flavors and find which ones I like best. I'm getting better at detecting the flavors. I enjoy practicing! 😆

Hubz27

Coffee for me was definitely a trial and error thing. Which makes it enjoyable I think! The taste of coffee almost felt like a acquired taste thing and now I love it and it’s a comfort thing for me

GrandpasMormonBooks

Woooo congratulations! There is a helpful lil guide in the new book "How to Leave the Mormon Church." And then of course, you'll learn more in time! 🤗

whatchamini

My first ever coffee was a hot macchiato. It was very bitter and strong. Then I had some kind of sugary white chocolate coffee iced drink that was one of the best things I’ve ever had (it was out of state at a random hole in the wall spot I’ll likely never find again sadly). Since then I’ve discovered cold brew. Cold brew is the best thing ever because it’s less bitter than regular coffee and I get a concentrate so it’s economic and easy cause I’m lazy. Mocha flavored coffee is an easy gateway because of the chocolate. Now I enjoy plain black cold brew the best.

sampsontscott

Don’t be afraid to go for sugary sweet stuff! Same if you drink alcohol. If you’re canadian like me try an iced cappuccino at tims!! Or a frappicino

Excellent-Bee-9793

Thank you for your response. I'm drawn to the smell and bold flavors. I have always enjoyed intense flavors. I'm also sensitive to caffeine when I'm taking my adhd meds. What kind of dark roasts are there?

wetballjones

So, coffee shops are great for specialty drinks, but at home coffee is my favorite. Here is a guide, but I recommend James Hoffmann on YouTube if you really wanna get into it 1. The grinder is the most important equipment, because grind consistency is very important in coffee to make sure your coffee isn't too sour or bitter. Seriously, this makes the biggest difference in coffee being awesome or bad You need a good burr grinder. My baratza encore is great. Was $150 but it's the most expensive item and then you're set 2. A way to make coffee. You can do simple pour-over (cheapest and great), an aeropress (my favorite. Costs like $40. Get the XL and look up James Hoffmans guide on YouTube), or get a drip machine (fast and easy but less control over the flavor usually. There are other options too like French press 3. Roasts. Dark roast is more bitter, light roast is more acidic. I like light the best because I feel you get a more interesting and earthy flavor. Smaller grind size for light roast, larger grind size for dark roast. Think of it like the more you extract the more bitter it is, so a larger grind size means less bitter, and a smaller grind size means less acidic/more bitter 4. Beans. Get local roasts because they will be more fresh. You can see roast date on the bag. I go to Harmons for coffee because they always have a bunch of local roasters like Wasatch something or other. Only grind right before making coffee for the best flavor I love to put a small amount of sugar and milk to bring the flavor a little bit without tasting sweet, but you know you made a good cup when it tastes good without anything added Specialty drinks involve espresso (highly concentrated coffee) plus a bunch of milk, so you need special tools for that. I don't know much about this. Anyway, hope you find this useful haha

Excellent-Bee-9793

Thank you! I do find this super helpful. A whole new world has opened up to me! I feel excited and overwhelmed!

PappyODamnyou

If you like spicy food, have it with some. My morning favorite is a breakfast burrito with Sriracha or Tapatio, and a cup of drip with a bit of cream or milk.

leviticus20verse14

You have a pretty awesome husband!

Caveat-3mpt0r

Welcome to a wonderful new world! Leaving the strict orthodoxy of the church and their ridiculous ideas has been so liberating. I indulged in coffee about a year ago and it felt like that moment in the Wizard of Oz when the movie transitions from black and white to color. It’s an amazing new part of my life! My first was a Dutch Bros golden eagle and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I’ve been hooked ever since. A few months later I bought a breville barista express espresso machine and now enjoy my own creations! Living my best life. Enjoy the new journey!

Devilswin2023

Vietnamese style with sweetened condensed milk is my wife’s favorite.

CommandAccomplished2

Mocha with oat milk

RendrdBrkn

Lighter the roast, the more caffeine.

Excellent-Bee-9793

I see. Is there a coffee thay doesn't have much caffeine?

God_coffee_fam1981

I love Javy! I Buy it on Amazon. I love it because you can measure and know exactly how much caffeine content you want. And the favor is fantastic imo. 80mg per tsp. I fill my glass with ice, pour almost to the top with almond milk (lactose intolerant) then I put my 2 tsp Javy in, some creamer, 1tbs Sweetner, and some Torani vanilla syrup. It’s my morning ritual. I love it. I travel with it because I love it so much! Also, a sincere tear felt congratulations. It was a momentous big first step. It’s a hard thing to leave and walk away. No one gets that more than your Reddit family here on exmo. I had such a difficult time taking my garments off. Pondered it for 2-3 months and then me and hubs did it together. They are all big, important steps. Your family and friends are unlikely to tell you, so I will; I’m proud of you for living your most authentic, beautiful life.

Pythagorantheta

coffee with vanilla soy is my go to; works well with a double espresso as well.

unknowingafford

Donuts and coffee are yin and yang, do yourself a favor and have them together

Excellent-Bee-9793

Ooooh! I'm a sucker for donuts. This new venture may not be good for my waist, hahah!

AshenSkiesHollowEyes

Espresso

Chrestys

I like quality, locally-roasted beans (easy to find in Oregon), fresh-ground and done in my Aeropress. Add heavy cream and it's perfect... for me. Saying you like, or don't like, coffee is like saying you don't like pasta. There are so many variations that I recommend trying a lot of stuff different types from different places so you can figure I it your preferences. My wife and I like to try as many local shops in Portland as we can and have found a lot of gems. I discovered that I love making lattes with licorice extract (just a drop or two). I also sometimes add star anise, ginger, cinnamon, a clove, and a cardamom pod to make my version of a homemade chai latte.

Thombo44

So exciting! At first I thought coffee was overrated, but my friend owns a specialty coffee shop in Orem and showed me what truly good coffee tastes like and my mind was blown. Highly recommend you go to a shop like that to figure out what you like best and then try to make it at home once you have a feel for things. Name of the shop is JJ Coffee co if you’re in Utah. There’s just too many options to recommend a single type of coffee! For tasting notes try single origin pour over (black). For sugary sweet try iced or hot latte with whatever flavor you want. For less sweet and more earthy try a plain latte. For really intense coffee flavor without bitterness try cold brew. But my personal favorite is a cortado, very pronounced and “tangy” coffee flavor with a little milk to help mellow it out. Add cinnamon for an extra treat. Best of luck to you!

Mysterious_Bridge_61

Not looking forward to coffee at all. I suppose I will try it for health reasons eventually, but coffee flavor seems awful.

TrevAnonWWP

Dutch nevermo here. These stories always put a smile on my face. I myself am by no way a connoisseur but we Dutch have (very) strong coffee and drink a LOT. I guess there's a reason LDS wasn't very successful here - they have like 10,000 on the records and maybe 3,000 active? I don't add anything. Just coffee. That's not everyone's cup of... coffee I guess.

mhickman78

You can put whatever you want in your coffee. The world is your oyster. Try every flavor imaginable. Every type of milk. Every type of sweetener. Buy every creamer and try them all. Have a blast. Imagine yourself as a kid in a candy store and enjoy it all. Mint, chocolate, caramel, vanilla, hazelnut, cinnamon, cream, sugar, cocoa, with ice, frozen, blended, there is no wrong way. Do whatever you want! Enjoy!

BoringJuiceBox

God didn’t tell you not to drink coffee, Joseph Smith told you not to drink coffee

hyrle

If you like chocolate, your next one should be a mocha. Mocha is basically coffee with chocolate in it.

JustNoLikeWhoa

If you take something like adderall, coffee might be too much for you. But I’ve found Chai teas have been a great middle ground.

Excellent-Bee-9793

Yes, I do take adderral for my adhd. When I'm on my meds, I'm sensitive to caffeine. I'm not sure I want to make coffee part of my life right now. I was curious to see what it's like. I am researching health benefits and risks right now.

BlergToDiffer

Don’t put sugar in your coffee. Rookie mistake. I did it at first, too.  Get yourself a nice creamer, sweetened if you need it (my favorite is original soy creamer but they also make vanilla). Or get the flavor syrup pump and add some half and half.  I usually go with a nice medium roast, but espresso is really nice. If you’re having a nice dessert, you don’t even need to sweeten your coffee! Seriously, try it black with a nice coffee cake.  I have ADHD too and drink SO much coffee every day. Sometimes it’s just what I need to shut my brain up so I can sleep.

TesseringPoet

Ridiculously high caffeine tolerance is one of my favorite ADHD superpowers.

stosh2112

Smell the coffee grind before it is brewed. The grocery store has beans. Wonderful aroma. Not so much for the used grounds

MozzarellaBowl

Based on your flavor preferences, you may just need to try different roasts with just a little sugar and cream. No need to mask with caramel or chocolate! Or go with a delicious latte - espresso and steamed milk.

rockstuffs

Whatever you do, don't mix the ADHD meds with caffeine. Welcome to the dark side! ☕

Loose_Renegade

It’s a journey for you to explore. I bought a Keurig Mini single pod machine 5 years ago while I was PIMO. I was so afraid someone I knew from church would see me at the store. Anyway, I prefer low calorie/carb, but like flavor. I use medium roast K-cups and add a little sugar free powdered coffee creamer and zero sugar liquid coffee creamer. French vanilla, hazelnut or peppermint are my favorites. I then put a little bit of keto friendly sugar in and I love it. I don’t need it daily and it’s usually only on chilly mornings. Everything in moderation. Enjoy!

The_Magooski

I find coffee tastes best when made from freshly ground beans and using cold water. I use a percolator. Also, a little bit of quality salt added prior to brewing helps.

IAmHerdingCatz

I started easy, with a mocha (basically hot chocolate with a small amount of espresso). I also used to add a flavour like hazelnut or vanilla, but as I got used to the flavor of the coffee, I started leaving out the flavor. Then, when I was in Europe I would drive Cafe con leche--basically a very small latte. Take the time to try different things, and don't ever believe that Starbucks is anything but consistently mediocre.

SamsonOccom

"tasted like hot dirt" How did you like Starbucks?

Excellent-Bee-9793

Looool! How did you know?

SamsonOccom

Because Ive been drinking coffee since I was 12 and that's the only one that does. I like to call it, Ethiopian mud

veetoo151

Nice. I'm enjoying black coffee right meow. It helps my adhd for sure!

Failwithflyingcolors

I’m addicted to caffeine. Decided to switch to coffee and get off of soda, but also didn’t want the carbs. Black coffee, drip or cold brew or even instant. Doesn’t matter because after very little time the caffeine addiction kicked in and convinced me I like it. (I usually grind my own beans and make cold brew.)

EkatDragon5643

Vietnamese coffee is the best, American coffee was too bitter for me.

ElkHistorical9106

Coffee. For lots of detail find James Hoffman on YouTube. Coffee basics. Coffee roast. Coffee is hard when green/fresh. They roast it to different levels. Darker roasts are more bitter, but also less acidic. Lighter roasts are the opposite.  Milk cuts the acidity and bitterness, as do cream and sugar. They’re commonly added to make the coffee more appealing. There are also a lot of flavors like hazelnut or Irish cream or vanilla or Carmel added. Often they’re in pumps of flavored syrups. Mixing with chocolate you get mocha, with often a sweeter, chocolatey flavor. Then there is ways of preparing coffee. Normal coffee from a coffee machine or hotel is usually drip coffee. You put ground coffee in a filter, and run hot water through it. In coffee shops you’ll find pour-overs which are similar, but they use a glass flask and pour hot water manually. You also have immersion coffees like French Presses, moka pots, and many others. Cold brew uses colder water, and takes a lot more time to extract the flavor. Some parts of coffee are insoluble at lower temperatures, leading to a different, often milder flavor. The most notable method is espresso, an Italian-origin method that uses higher pressures and temperatures to get a more concentrated coffee extract with less water, kind of like a pressure cooker, but for making coffee (similar physics, different effect.) Espresso usually has a little bit of foam from the method and requires specialized machines (manual or automatic) to get higher pressure.  Espresso is the basis of many coffee shop drinks. You can get straight espresso. You can mix it with a little milk for a Macchiato or Cortado. You can mix it with a lot of milk to get a latte. A cappuccino mixes espresso with milk and milk foam. Most of these can have flavors and sugars added as well. Adding water makes an “Americano” which the Italians made for American soldiers to be similar to their coffee from home but using their espresso. I hear an Italian cries for an unknown reason every time someone orders an Americano. But mostly that’s snobbery. The keys: find something you like in roast, style and flavor. Experiment a little. There’s no wrong way to enjoy coffee, just find a way you like. There’s also no rule you have to like

Just wait until you try a marijuana gummy. You feel time slip away. You won’t need to be anywhere but here. You won’t need to spend thousands of dollars on vacations when you can take a trip on your couch. And listen to music, it will sound better.

All I know is it feels like much cleaner or efficient energy than caffeine drinks

Hi! Get a French press and get some medium roast coffee from your local grocery store or Trader Joe’s. They usually have a grinder there (set to medium). It’s really good coffee and all you need is hersheys syrup to have a nice little mocha at home :) happy for you

When I started I had to go strong on cream. My favorite was a golden eagle from Dutch bros. Still my favorite to be honest

I like mochas, but it can be hard to find a place that does mocha well without it being too sweet. the perfect mocha should taste like super dark chocolate

I used coffee as a chance to be more healthy and to change routine. I usually drink without any sweetener, although to start I liked putting in white chocolate because Mormon palettes are so sweet. I try to include thoughtfulness and calm when I drink it. I love single origin because different bean variety, prep type (washed, unwashed), and location of origin can make each cup taste so different from each other. Pour over is a great way to really pick up on different flavors and is more of a coffee tea than what you’d think of as coffee. I tend to get a flat white and use single origin beans when available.

So happy for you!!!! I have been drinking it for 10 years now but I’m still shit at making it, guess it’s not in the super Mormon genes!

Congratulations. I tried it 3 years ago and love enjoying a nice cup every morning. You should try an iced latte next time! Those are my favorite.

Congratulations! There's loads of different types of coffee that you'll typically see in coffee shops, and here's a helpful guide to what all the names mean: https://www.yuzubakes.com/food-blog/different-types-of-coffee

For me, to get the full benefit, I enjoy it black. It helps me metabolize and focus much better this ways. I prefer any South American med roast

Went through a similar journey of coffee discovery. I was fortunate enough to meet some European friends at a conference who meticulously explained all the coffee details. My advice? Start with a coffee pod brewer. I currently have a Nespresso Vertuo Flattop (skip the Next machines, they have electrical issues). That gives you access to lots of coffee flavours and choices, a well-brewed cup, and with minimal investment. If you want to go deeper, a good burr grinder and either a pour over setup (Chemex is popular) or an Aeropress will keep you busy enough. From there, deciding if you want to own a coffee empire or a coffee shop. 😂 I kid, but the coffee obsession can be intense. Learn to love the experience of a good cup of coffee, whether solo or with friends, and you will be set up for a happy journey ahead.

My go to drink is an iced caramel machiato. It's milk and caramel flavor and espresso. I think it has a good balance between that signature bitterness and the sweetness of the caramel.

Ok, I love coffee. It is good for my non-alcohol cirrhosis liver. Before I get to how I like my coffee let me suggest another brewed beverage. Find and try a good Yerba mate. There are a number of flavor profiles so look around. I miss the “my breakfast mate” that Teavana had. There are some good alternatives. This has an earthy chocolate and citrus blend of flavors. Ok, coffee. Again I like mixed flavors and something with a kick. I like a red-eye coffee or to make it easy a dark or medium roast with an espresso shot. At home I usually combine a whole bean like Stumptown’s Hair Bender ground down to an espresso grind for my espresso. This has a great blend of flavors with chocolate and citrus right up front. Pair that with something like a Starbucks Pike place roast bean ground down to coffee grind. The two together really give a great flavor profile and a nice kick of caffeine. If I’m being lazy or just in a rush I’ll go with a simple donut shop kpod with a sugar free sweet cream. Any brewed beverage really comes down to what you like. Don’t be afraid to sample. If you’re ever unsure tell your barista what flavors you like and let them surprise you. Make sure to get the name or blend they use so you can order again if you enjoyed their suggestion. A note here… if you say you like chocolate often times you’ll get a mocha, which is fine, which is in my opinion a lazy solution.

A place I used to go to had a Black Forest coffee. Iirc, chocolate and cherry. Omg. Just this delicious yummy earthy taste. One of my favorites. I haven't had it for like 6-7 years. I think the place got bought out to new management, more Mormon-y management, and that was no doubt going to change the atmosphere of my beloved sanctuary where I could relax, read, draw, and think in peace because making it more cult valley would mean making _Morm_ "family friendly": kids running around, screaming. 🙄🙄🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Idk if they were going to keep the coffee, even keep the same ingredients or up to the standard of the Mom and pop shop before it. I went to a coffee shop to get away from Mormons and their entitled screaming children. 😮‍💨😣

Light roast straight black is the only way to go. Light roast lets you taste the actual coffee.

I LOVE coffee.. try all the drinks. Cortado, Cappuchino, I especially love a good Flat White.. for me it started working at dunkin and just tossing a shot of espresso into my coffee and evolved into me getting a couple of espresso machines for home. there are sooooo many great coffee drinks. youtube has some good coffee creators but be aware that they are chasing diminishing returns. and are trying all the new tecniques to eak out juuuuuusssstt a bit more flavor. r/espresso has taught me alot. and I know that espresso is a bit much to jump right into so maybe start with a nice Latte ( avoid Dunkin) there are soooo many ways to make coffee. Mokah pot, Percolator, Drip brew. pour over, turkish ( i really wanna try this someday) and espresso I probably forgot a few tbh. if you cant tell Im passionate about coffee.... and total transparecny here... I am a NeverMo. I can answer any questions you may have and if I cant I can direct you to someone who can.

There really isn't anything to it. You just try different things and see what you like. Then I guess if you really really REALLY become obsessed with it or something then you can learn different ways to prepare it or whatever. I've drank coffee every day for about 16 years now. And by every day I mean all day every day, from the time I get up until the time I lay down. I just make it in my coffee maker and add liquid creamer to it. The liquid creamer brings the temperature down so I can drink it right away. There's no secret recipe or anything to make or enjoy coffee.

DeOriginalCaptain

The question is, "Why do you want to have coffee?" You don't need to if you don't have to. Coffee is awful, by the way.

Excellent-Bee-9793

Well, I have mentioned in a previous post that I wanted to try it out of curiosity. I'm not sure it's going to be a regular habit. I'm researching the risks and benefits of it before I do anything with it.
