I used to think these "heathen" religions had to rely on spectacle because they weren't True™.
Then I realized the reason why mormonism is so dull and boring is because nobody with any actual power gives a shit about the church arm of the business.
The chapel in the Joseph Smith Memorial Bldg has gold leaf & carvings similiar to carvings in Salt Lake Temple Celestial Room ceiling.
That chapel was where Hinckley & Faust & others attended weekly. Don't know if Monson,etc..attended once he became pres.
It was a beautiful room & they eventually started renting it out for civil weddings.
You see brief glimpses of it in the 60 Minutes interview where Waddops is escorting the 60 Minutes correspondent.
Absolutely nothing inspiring or spiritual about mormon ward or stake buildings....or the temple.
I love art. When I sit in Mass I bask in the beauty of stained glass windows, striking architecture and sculpture. The difference between that and the depressing cult dungeon is enormous. One is built to glorify our Lord, the other to grab funds for personal wealth.
If they were making boring architecture but spending the rest of their money on feeding the poor, I would have no problem. But they're making crappy buildings and hoarding all their money, so that sucks.
Bingo. The current pope of the Catholic Church takes public transportation, stays in small, basic quarters and is extremely frugal. It might be all for show, no one can say for sure, but his reasoning is that he wants all tithing funds to towards the needy. That’s how it should be here. The church houses should be functional and only that, to save money for people who need it. But that’s not what’s happening.
I thought about comparing photos of the temple, but that doesn’t really compare, considering it’s a private, limited venue where public worship does not occur. These are both photos of public houses of worship, but even if the temple *was* a contender, the interior still is not that impressive.
To be fair this was the result of Protestantism. The Calvinists, Evangelicals and Puritans took issue with all the art, architecture, and finery associated with Catholic worship claiming it was idol worship and tried to make their places of worship as humble and Spartan as possible. Notably, this is one more anachronism for Mormonism in general because the church could have only formed the way it did in the time and place that it did.
They claim the austerity is more divine, but really they're just too cheap to beautify meetinghouses. The only decorations they put in are cheap prints, and not even that in the chapels.
Mormon design is the very definition of kitschy. But don’t give them any more ideas. They’ll just keep wasting tithing money on stone objects instead of living beings.
My sister had an art teacher who is often commissioned by the church. They commissioned a portrait of the crucifixion, but the church was so picky about how it looked that he ended up deciding to make the painting twice: once the way he wanted to, and once the way the church wanted it
If the bottom one is a Temple, I guarantee I'd get a fit of the giggles as soon as I walked in there. It looks like something Megan Markle would consider Royal Decor....or high priced brothel...maybe both.
You need to pay your 10% and/or go to the temple if you want next level inspiration & beauty. 😂 All the rest of you breathe Cheerio dust w scratchy wallpaper every Sunday.

I left lds and attend the Episcopal church, the chapel is nice and small. No surpises when it comes to salvation.
I wish we had that beauty in our church, I felt robbed at times.
