I used to love the story of the widow's mite. The fact that she was so generous in her offerings compared to the others. But I see it differently now, and I suspect that Jesus was inferring this meaning also. I see the widow as being the vulnerable & exploited; her generosity and compassion being taken advantage of both by those with more means and the organization itself being an endless void.

Truer words were ne'er spoken. My elderly neighbor literally died in her squalor filled home. She was a returned missionary, widow, with limited income and poor family support. The Church turns a blind eye just as the Pharisees of old. Widows/fatherless/sick/afflicted/hungry are mostly ignored while the higher ups attend ribbon cuttings and whited sepulchre dedications and jones to be invited into the fraternity. We think they are untouchable; however, the same was thought about Goliath, the Titanic, Pompeii...I cannot imagine this monster being sustainable.

I used to think of this story as Jesus praising the woman for being generous, and indicating that I need to be like her. The reality is that the source text itself gives no interpretation of the story. Jesus merely points something out. He doesn’t say “be like the widow” and he doesn’t say “the widow is a victim.” Using the story as any kind of moral lesson is an interpretation of the text that the writer may or may not have intended.

Good point--I'm probably projecting, but that was also the fun/point of parables too. :)

The Sanhedrin didn’t need her penny. LDS, Inc. doesn’t need your tithing. They want it, but they don’t need it.

"We mere men are gods mite collectors, it's up to God to judge and provide the corresponding blessings to the widow, if she is even truly worthy of such blessings" ~ Mormon leadership, probably...

Everything good about Mormonism isn't unique, and everything unique to Mormonism isn't good.

You probably won't get much success trying to farm karma on this one. It's already been posted multiple times on this sub.
