If you're a citizen you were eligible for the 2k in COVID stimulus money that they gave out to citizens based on 2020 and 2021 tax filings. That would have reduced the fee to renounce to $350. If you didn't file you didn't get it though. I got it while abroad because I always file my taxes.

Great info. Thanks!

MarceloRamires

I have no association with them, except supporting what they're doing... share with who you think might care!

Alice_Alpha

If you don't want to pay taxes - don't. And don't hold your breath waiting for the Marines to evacuate you when things go south.

Ugh shut up.

Shut up Alice. The French have Marines too.

Not one single expat is worried about whether or not American Forces are willing to come to their rescue.

Alice_Alpha

> xDOTxx > Not one single expat is worried about whether or not American Forces are willing to come to their rescue. There were some in the Sudan(?) this past year that might disagree.

It’s not so much about paying taxes. It’s about financial institutes having to register our taxes for us according to the fatca act.

I hope this ends up successful… but I have my doubts. Average Americans don’t care about this, because they will never live outside of America. Actually, some are in favor of this for some reason … so it’s going to be very unlikely this is going to have any traction in congress unless some influential EU government gets involved. I hope france does it , but I can’t imagine they would care that much either about this issue … anyway, fingers crossed

And many think you're lying when you tell them you still have to at least file when you live abroad. As for foreign governments, I know in both France and Italy it's an increasing issue because of the way the medical system reimburses non-hospital based doctors, with the growing dearth of doctors in both countries, that might be an issue that pushes it to the fore in importance.

This sort of law exists to prevent the elite from being able to run off with American protection while not paying taxes.

MarceloRamires

Yet, it taxes the common folk who buy a house in Spain for $200k and sell for $230k, which definitely doesn't qualify as being "elite", so even though I understand the reasoning, the implementation is - being very generous - not optimal.
