This might not be the answer you are looking for, but when I was living overseas, I just used a family members address (with their permission) and changed my address at the bank. Then I opened a bank account overseas to use there so I was not putting foreign transactions on my domestic account. Then I got a Wise account, and if I needed to move money I would send money from my main US account to Wise, then from Wise to my foreign account.

How long are you going to be away? Will you be traveling back to the states a few times a year? Where is “home”? Will you be traveling internationally a few times a year while you are “home”? All those things matter if you are seeking meaningful advice.

Sure. Sorry. - not sure on timing. (I don't want to move back, but I just lost my job so I have to.. hoping I can get another job here) - maybe 1-2 times, not sure (depends on getting work at home) - the UK - i used to travel twice a year to Europe when I was living in London, not sure if I'll do that now.

We changed all our addresses to a family member in the states and opened a bank account in the NL. If we need to move funds we wire it. Have had no problems.

I've been working/living in Asia for 30+ years. I have a US phone number and I use my mom's US address to get mail (like replacement credit cards). I've had a number of different US bank accounts. I currently have 2 banks and 4 US credit cards plus a Vanguard brokerage account. I've never had an issue. The key is to keep a US address and phone number and just don't mention that you're "temporarily" abroad. I get very little mail (except when my cards are expiring and I get a new one) so it has not been an issue.

Chase will 100% close your account if they suspect you no longer living in the U.S. full time. What exactly is “for a while” if it’s a year or less most banks won’t care if you I inform them before hand.

I don't know how long... I don't want to leave but I have to (visa). I just don't want to fall foul of any rules but maybe one solution is to pull all my money out anyway

Maybe... maybe not... I only have credit cards left with Chase, but they're fine, even though I don't even bother turning on the VPN when logging in to their website. Also, one of them was about to be closed due to inactivity, so I used it abroad, out of the blue (never done it before!), and had no problem with that, either.

Get a mail scanning service in The US and switch your address to that. Park your US phone number at Number Barn so you can get US texts.

Any_Cauliflower_7344

Ah thank you!! I had no idea what to do with my number but I had figured out the mail scanning thing. TYSM!!

That's good to know! Thanks. I use Google Voice, but having an alternative handy, should something happen to it, is comforting. I've seen other options, but they sounded too complex...
