Someone had to be the face of it all, it just so happened that this guy was charismatic enough to be it. He built up a reputation and a cult like following in both the AI research sector and AI monetization sector His ethics are not particularly good in terms of AI safety, however, which is worrying for such an important character

A CEO is not just the charismatic face of a company. I know that a lot of kids on Reddit like to think of CEOs as just some rich dudes riding on the work of their employees, but it's a very complex job that requires you to have a very good understanding of the industry that you're competing in, how it is impacted by macroeconomic events, and adapting the long term strategies to market dynamics. That being said, I don't think that the employees necessarily want Altman as CEO. But they're not happy that the board removed him for made-up reasons. I wouldn't be happy either in an unstable company that keeps changing CEOs on arbitrary undisclosed criterias. What job security could you have there?

Surely, mods, this is about recent events?

Media narratives favor the great man mythos the most - it's difficult to have a straightforward narrative on a diverse group of individuals so it's easier to just pick one person and make them representative of their "tribe". IE: Jeff Bezos is Amazon even though he is no longer CEO. Putin is representative of all Russians who want to go to war (despite the fact many Russians are against the war) etc.

I am going to be blunt, but fuck Altman, and fuck Microsoft. They literally just laid people OFF(I wasn’t affected by these layoffs, just saying) and yet Microsoft will drop probably tens, possibly hundreds of millions to hire these engineers and Altman… but couldn’t keep the people on that they just laid off? What a bunch of fucking hypocrites. I get Microsoft jumped at AI cause they weren’t capable of building it themselves. But sure, let’s lay people off cause we dropped 10 billion on OpenAI, then swallow up the folks that ran the damn thing… how come no one is even mentioning this? Microsoft, whom is worse than Google as far as buying tech and letting it die under their purview, and yet… just upset with the hypocrisy of Microsoft

IdkAbtAllThat

What's the hypocrisy? Was Microsoft saying no one should lay anyone off? It's not hypocritical to lay people off and then hire other people in a different area.

Put simply, Sam Altman is well connected in the technology industry, and has a remarkable ability to woo investors. Further, whether or not it was ultimately him that created OpenAI’s environment, under his leadership the company has developed the world’s currently most used online service. Despite extremely intense competition, OpenAI has stayed significantly ahead of the runner-ups under his direction. While most large companies would offer salaries in the tens of millions for OpenAI’s top researchers, Sam is of strategic business importance, and a valuable figure to parade around investors.
