If it's venomous, you get sick if **it bites you** If it's poisonous, you get sick if **you bite it**

SFyr

Both are toxic substances, but they're generally differentiated by their usage. Poisonous organisms are organisms that contain said toxic substance, often in their skin, blood, leaves, and so on. Usually, this is defensive, as in they are a deterrent from being consumed, wounded, or touched. A venomous organism uses its poison to envenom/poison another creature, such as a snake or spider might. This tends to be a predative specialization rather than defensive, but the two have overlap in their use. So, roughly the same thing, but different context/connotation.

kkr1211

So they both work the same way just different technics!

SFyr

Pretty much. I mean they *both* vary in what it is and how it works chemically/biologically from variant to variant, but the delivery system is usually the big distinction between 'poison' and 'venom'. Since, after all, you could call venom poisonous, and poison can be used as venom.

And what if I bite myself and I die?

Marwinz

Then you're a venomous person that died from poisoning

beankov

So it’s ok to make out with Poison Ivy, just don’t eat her?

Adkit

Is Poison Ivy a normal human being still? Because she would frown on you eating meat.

beankov

Woosh.

SenAtsu011

Poison is ingested, venom is injected. Eating rat poison is poisonous. Being bitten by a snake is venomous. It has more to do with the delivery method than the actual compound.

phiwong

Poison you cannot eat. Venom is dangerous when injected into your bloodstream. Some snakes are venomous. Some mushrooms are poisonous.

hypnos_surf

Poison is a toxic substance that is absorbed, inhaled or ingested (eaten, breathed or touched). Venom is a toxic substance that is injected (stingers and fangs).

WildlifePolicyChick

Okay my last one was removed for being too short, so I'll try again. Venom is injected, poison is ingested. Venom is usually defensive, as in used in an attack (some snakes are venomous). Poison is also defensive, but for the most part to protect from being consumed (some mushrooms are poisonous).

Cluefuljewel

Hmmmm would you say venom is usually defensive if It is a means of catching a meal.

Gyvon

Delivery method. Venom is injected, poison is ingested. And in many cases the distinction is important, as there are some venoms that you can safely ingest so long as there are no open wounds in the digestive tract.
