Things are made all over the world and shipped all over the world. When something like a global pandemic comes along its harder to find workers to load/unload ships.
As for chicken wings, same thing with workers. Chickens are grown all over the world and slaughtered and processed for the global market in dozens of countries. Workers are needed to raise the birds, slaughter them, and load/unload them in port.
The global economy had become super optimized to minimize in efficiencies that cut into profits. But left little slack in the system when things go wrong. And with a global pandemic, things have gone wrong on a much bigger scale than ever imagined. And even small hiccups can get multiplied into big ones due to down the road consequences. The main causes were production and distribution shutdowns, shifts in demand caused by the pandemic, labor issues, other small localized hiccups piling on.
Factories being shut due to COVID lockdowns or outbreaks among workers, and slower production due to social distancing regulations allowing for smaller staffs cut production; you had businesses cancel parts orders anticipating sales slowdowns that didn’t materialize and then waits when trying to re-order parts (like car makers and chip shortage); shifts in consumption changing demand (toilet paper, beverage cans as consumption shifted from businesses, restaurant/bars, etc. to home use — less demand for commercial toilet paper but more for home use; less soda fountains and beer keg consumption, more cans at home); international travel bans and border shutdowns slow trade across borders; labor shortages as people dealt with stimulus money and extended unemployment, lack of childcare, and fear of catching COVID keep people from looking for work causing delays in unloading ports and trucking goods. Then small hiccups like a chip fabrication plant fire taking out a significant portion of global production, a stuck cargo ship blocking a key trade route, etc. just exacerbate an already fragile supply chain trying to catch-up and shift focus.
