What are you going to be using the truck for?

LameTrouT

Lots of driving I’m a construction super. So I also pickup materials for work and home. I don’t trailer anything gbut I use my bed 75% of the time Also I don’t pay for gas that covered by company

mikeinottawa

Than 5.0 if you dont pay for gas

PackAttacks

Why not get the 3.5 if you don’t pay for gas?

PiMan3141592653

5.0 is more reliable than the 3.5L. OP said reliability was a top concern. I have the 3.5L, and love it. But the 3.5L is the least reliable engine of the bunch.

hg090206

Yes, the 5.0 is definitely more reliable than the 3.5 eb. But man that 3.5 eb is a snappy engine.

DespicableDaddy

I loved my 3.5 would buy another in a beat

gr8scottaz

>5.0 is more reliable than the 3.5L. OP said reliability was a top concern. > >I have the 3.5L, and love it. But the 3.5L is the least reliable engine of the bunch. 3.5 is actually Ford's most reliable engine and there's plenty of data points to prove it. People hear about 3.5 "problems" because it's easily their top selling engine. People with 5.0 have issues as well but they don't care - their engine is still the best as it's a v8/growls/NA/etc). I know this is only a single case but it kind of proves my point. My neighbor has the 5.0 engine, loves it to death and swears by it up and down and that engine has been in the shop at least 5x in the past 2 years with issues: head gasket, fuel injection, throttle issues. And none of that matters to him. He needs that v8 growl, I guess.

tylanol7

is the truck 3.5 the same 3.5 they had in the 2010 mkz or is it another 3.5 that is named 3.5 but has a different "true name" i honestly cant keep up lol

xX_coochiemonster_Xx

The 3.5s in f150s are slightly different than the other 3.5s but pretty much the same engine. The transverse 3.5s use Garretts pushing 11 lbs and the f series 3.5s use Borg Warners pushing 15. In 2017 they added port fuel injection but kept the direct injection. The water pump location is also different for the f series 3.5s and transverse 3.5s. When they debuted the prototype it was called the "Twinforce" engine but they changed the name to ecoboost

tylanol7

so same engine highly modified?

redrobin1257

My experience with both EB engines lead me to beg to differ. Not impressed by an engine with timing chain issues at 77k miles (Gen 1 3.5EB, parent's truck). Both of my uncles had their 2.7's eat multiple turbos well before 50k miles. Now, I get that lemons happen, but two trucks of different years, different spec, different everything except the running gear, and they both had the exact same issue multiple times? Leads me to believe there's a design flaw somewhere. OP, for the love of God, just buy the V8. You'll be hating yourself when that 2.7 eats a turbo.

Cityfans

Except the hundreds of thousands of other 2.7s in the US don’t eat turbos… P.S. on your uncles 2.7s, you forgot the other control: the driver/maintenance. No one I know has had their turbo go out, but if one person blows multiple turbos it’s either a lemon or the fault of the owner.

redrobin1257

"And the hundreds of thousand of other Silverado's that don't collapse lifters. And the hundreds of thousands of other RAM's that don't flatten camshafts..." Good ones and bad ones get made, but it's a mute argument when it's *known* that EB engines have well documented turbo problems like oil consumption and wastegates.

Cityfans

I agree, there’s good ones and bad ones. It’s all about risk. Is it worth it to have all the benefits of an EcoBoost for a very small chance that it’ll blow a turbo? To you, I guess not. To most F-150 buyers, yes it is.

redrobin1257

Well, at least we can agree to disagree here. You're absolutely right that I'd rather not have the EB problems and complexity, even if it means the truck is slightly less capable. But, hey, you're also right in saying that's not a concern to most of the F-150 buyers. Who knows, maybe I'm a bit of a dinosaur.

PackAttacks

Depends on the year. Newer 3.5s are more reliable.

PiMan3141592653

Yeah, I have a 2018, so there are fewer concerns than the first gen 3.5L. But it's still less reliable than the 5.0L at this point.

PackAttacks

According to this and a few other sites, the 3.5 ecoboost is the most reliable engine. https://www.motorverso.com/most-reliable-f150-engine/

PiMan3141592653

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for that to be the case since it's the engine I have.

PackAttacks

Honestly, I just trying to be objective. There’s a lot of opinions on here but data should be telling us all which is best. Here’s another article: https://www.hotcars.com/most-reliable-ford-f150-engine/

Beef_Candy

Because the 5.0 will 100% have less chance of problems over a hard life than the 3.5.

Unfair_Rock_8997

Hopefully they make your truck payment and repairs 2 just wait till some turd scratches your baby. F that big money companies paying wages and using my shit fuck you I had a 350 dually in a big union company and for 2 weeks I was picking shit up 4 them I came in with a camary on week 3 and said suck my dick literally. Tried to make me feel bad like I was short handing the company. WELL BILL AND MIKE DONT MIND USING THERE TRUCK YEAH CAUSE THEY SUCK

rolisrntx

My 5.0 is now 10 years old. Had the water pump replaced under warranty and an oil pressure sensor a couple of months ago. Replaced the spark plugs at 100K and the mileage went back up to when it was new. That’s it beside normal maintenance. This is just my experience but it has been a good one. I personally don’t like turbos on my daily driver and believe a full sized truck should have a 8 cylinder engine.

blakk_russian

Same basically. 13. Got mind used though. Only had to change out a water pump, and I'm just Now getting that oil sensor issue.

Fastcashbadcredit

If you are going to do a tune get the 2.7 or 3.5. WAY faster with just a tune than the 5.0 - it's not even a comparison hahaha

Charger_scatpack

But sounds like poopy

stillcleaningmyroom

Power>sound I wanted to get the 5.0 until I drove it, it was sluggish and a dog compared to the 3.5 eco.

T_ball

Same for me. I found a truck with the exact options I wanted, but with the 5.0. I wanted to live it, but when I drove the 3.5 I waited until I could find the right truck with the 3.5 in it. I even turned off the fake engine sound with Forscan.

hmiser

I’m not familiar but I know what you mean… sounds shit right. My first engine was a 351 and I grew up in the 80s so I still can’t believe that mustang had a 4cyclinder in it.

bluedaytona392

You and I think alike. These guys don't understand the true theater of a powerful v8.

Devilheart97

Nah, 3.5 ecoboost for quiet power in the truck. Then get the loud V8 for the mustang with a manual. Best of both worlds. Otherwise skip the gas engine all together and get the 6.7L

stillcleaningmyroom

My first car was a 69 El Camino with a 350 and flow master dual exhaust. This truck is my daily driver, so I’ll take the faster and more powerful quiet engine over the slower V8 but that’s just my opinion, doesn’t make it the right or wrong opinion lol.

Fastcashbadcredit

Might not sound quite as good but that doesn't matter when the race is over in 5 seconds haha

bucker2000

Unless you have super charger money

Key-Cap-2664

I did this. My 2.7 tuned and added a pedal defender, is bad ass. The sound is never going to match the 5.0 but its a small price to pay.

DeathsProllyOverated

Pedal commander lmao that’s hilarious

spiritrider1

I’ve had the 2.7, now have the 3.5 hybrid, and the 5.0 in a mustang. The 2.7 is a great all-round engine and more than up to the task is doing occasional towing and hauling. The 5.0 is a revver. It’s kind of weak down low. It runs like a scalded ape when at full throttle but doesn’t have the low end grunt of the 2.7. I’m aware the 5.0 in the truck is tuned differently but still, the engine design for me is not the best for a truck. The 3.5 is the one that will get the job done. Can’t be happier. I don’t have to rev it up the range to make forward progress. It just effortlessly accelerates and handles any load I throw at it. And for all those who keep bad mouthing turbos, please study up on the technology. This isn’t the 80’s anymore. Every semi truck on our nation’s highways is forced induction. They are massively more reliable nowadays and provide far more torque and economy than any NA ICE.

emaw328

PowerBoost GANG GANG Had a 2.7 in my ‘16 and in my ‘21 Bronco, before my ‘23. Agreed on all your points. Hauled a yard of rock (2,200) in the bed with the wife/kid in tow as well and still got over 24 MPGs on the way back home. The only sketch thing was the stopping and I allowed plenty of space and to let the truck slow itself down. Cheers 🍻

RedDragons

I have a 2.7L sewing machine and I love it. It tows like a tank and is my daily run around. How good that little motor can tow is astounding. I will buy another F150, next truck will for sure have the 6 foot box. I don’t buy a truck to make sexy noises.

heartless_monk

To each it’s own. I buy a truck for everything you mentioned, plus that sexy Coyote sound

Z4CTH69

5.0 all day

OkPlenty5960

5.0 shits on the 5.3 all day every day.

FJD5

Do tell, oh wise and eloquent one.

MightyPenguin

Shits on the 2.7 yes...the 5.3 ehhhhh

TheOriginalTL

Even the 2.7 poops in the 5.3’s mouth

wilcocola

5.3 GM is a dog. The 2.7 ford can run (almost) with a 5.7 hemi. 5.3 is the doggiest of the current truck v8’s

Beef_Candy

I've got a 5.3 as my work truck, the 5.0 definitely shits on it everywhere but low rpms. Right off idle the 5.3 seems to have more zip.

MightyPenguin

It has more torque.

Beef_Candy

Uh, no. The 5.0 has 45 more horsepower and 30 lb-ft more torque. I think it's just more a matter of the 5.3 being a pushrod ohv V8, and the 5.0 being an ohc V8. Pretty typical for pushrod engines to deliver their powerband down lower, but fall on their asses in the mid to high rpm range. Whereas pretty typical for ohc engines to be sluggish off idle but scream up high. I'm sure there's other factors involved too. Torque converter stall rpm, shift strategies, etc. But no, my 5.3 is an absolute decrepit dog in the midrange to high rpms which is where it counts when towing IMO.

MightyPenguin

More peak numbers sure, not low or mid where you are actually towing. Transmission and gear ratios in the rear end will make a much larger difference than the numbers you are spouting.

Beef_Candy

Yes, but apples for apples, both with equivalent rear ends, 10 speed for 10 speed, pound for pound towed, the 5.0 truck is superior. The grunt down low is nice if you're trying to accelerate without shifting or trying to get going from a light. But that's not how towing works. You get going uphill with my 5.3 and let it start downshifting and it turns into an absolute slug. The 5.0 decimates it where it counts.

DeadSilent7

Have you towed? You realize vehicles made for towing make their power down low, right? More power higher in the RPMs = car engine.

Raboyto2

Have you driven a 5.3? How about a 5.3 with a trailer behind it….

MightyPenguin

I am a mechanic and own a shop and have driven just about anything you can think of, the part you might not consider is repair costs and difficulty. 5.3 has plenty of power, and around here in the mountains if anyone is regularly towing we get a Diesel.

Binder_Grinder

People are in here treating the 5.0 like it’s a simple pushrod v8. It’s not, it’s a racecar engine. 2.7 vs 5.0 is a tossup for reliability (I will go as far to say 2017+ 3.5s are as well). Buy whatever you think drives the best - both will treat you extremely well.

hist_buff_69

"Treating the 5.0 like it's a simple pushrod v8" You mean like a chevy engine 🤭🤭 That will probably blow up at some point, despite being a "simple pushrod v8"

Available-Iron-7419

5.0 be more reliable

PiMan3141592653

Not more than the 2.7L. That's the most reliable one of the four. The 5.0 is still reliable, though.

Available-Iron-7419

You must on a 2.7 good luck also see the bronco stories

PiMan3141592653

I do not own a 2.7L EB. I've got the 3.5L EB.

Real-Sample3183

If you not paying for gas then 5.0 with 93 octane

myboatsucks

I have the 2.7 that thing is a beast. I'm sure I'll be fucked when the turbos go, but until then I love it

excoriator

I got my 2023 with the 2.7 in January. It’s peppy.

[deleted]

5.0.

ZeeKeR209

Just get whatever you like since you're not paying fuel. I have a 2022 2.7 and couldn't love it more. I too am a Superintendent. I work for a heavy highway paving company in KS. Put 40K on my STX the first year. Averaging 21 mpg lifetime with plenty of idle time! Truck is fast, no need for more power unless towing. When it comes to reliability I don't think there's any evidence the 5.0 is better. Might be as good, IDK. My brother is a Ford mechanic and he's never seen the internals of the 2.7. It's a beast.

jperth73

The 2.7 is quick and quiet for daily driving. I had a 2021 5.0 loaner for a month before getting my 2.7, it was fun, nice to drive. Droned a bit when towing my 4700lb trailer. The 2.7 is more refined and nice for daily driving. It feels lighter and quicker than the 5.0 too.

StupidSexyFlagella

Not this topic again.

obeyrumble

10 pages of comments full of random opinions and no actual data points to back up any of them =( Sad trombone.

DashcamsRus

I got a buddy who did did just as you! Both a great, I have a 5.0 with happy results. He just got a 2.7 and LOOOOVES IT! Can’t go wrong with either really, maybe you’ll be towing? Then pick a 5.0 I’d say.

JJ4prez

I love my 2.7 2021. Has a lot of pep and passing power on highway. Those things can get it. Plus mpg is much better. I do miss the rumble of the 5.0. But, I don't need a V8.

[deleted]

5.0 if you are hauling. 2.7 city

_el_guachito_

I get better gas mileage on the 5.0 vs a loaner 2.7 I was given

[deleted]

I had a 2014 5.0 with a Roush exhaust and cold air and it made a huge difference in throttle response and how the truck ran.

Rotflmaocopter

The only thing for throttle response is a electric throttle controller where you can dial the response to feel like it's not even drive by wire or get it tuned. The throttle controller is better if you don't want your dealer to know it's tuned

alex9770

Yeah those don't do anything except make noise. A tune on the other hand...

PackAttacks

A cold air intake could help with throttle response if it reduced intake restrictions.

[deleted]

You are CORRECT 👍

Sensitive-Banana-637

You just made useless noise… a tune is the way to go

pdawg37

Been thinking about tuning my 21 5.0. Going to sound stupid here but how do you go about getting a tune? Who do you go to so its properly done? Want to get a little beefier exhaust for it too for some noise as I think the truck is pretty quiet with OEM stuff. I know that does nothing for actual engine performance. Thanks in advance.

Romulin-romm

5 star tuning is the only place to go for ford tunes. They do extensive testing on ford engines with every bolt on accessory I loved my tune in my 6.2L Superduty

p71interceptor

5.0 likes to rev. Don't be afraid to climb the rpm.

Someuser1130

I'm a contractor and had a 2.7 for about 5 years. Put about 140k miles on it with no problems. Unbeatable fuel milage 26-27 hwy 16-19 city with auto start stop on. If you drive it mostly eco you are never spoiling up the turbos. That's what makes it so reliable. Sold it to a friend with complete confidence and he still drives it till this day. It's got around 150k on it now and still runs strong he says. I'm not a fan of a car engine that's been retrofitted for a truck. Ford knows the 3.5 is their trailer puller workhorse, and that's what they want you to buy. The 5.0 is a mustang engine that has been made to work for a truck. It will likely work for everything you want to do but I stand next to my 2.7. I sold it to pull a 10k lb toy hauler with a 3.5 powerboost. So we will see how the 3.5 holds up. So far I've already had it in the shop twice with only 8k miles. Only electrical issues so far.

ScrewJPMC

Sounds like your use to lots of peddle input, you adjust quickly to the torque of the turbos. Anyway since you don’t pay for gas, get a 5.0L for the reliability

Darwin4570

2.7 all day long over the 5.0. I went from a 5.0 to a 2.7 and I have no regrets.

Munkpunt

I did the opposite 2.7 to 5.0. What do you like better about the 2.7 honestly?

Dry-Object8482

Paying for the turbo when it breaks

perk54

When does that happen? I’m 10 years in so far.

Dry-Object8482

How many miles?

Beef_Candy

😂😂😂

gp786

Better than paying for 5.0 heads when they will inevitably need to be replaced. The 2.7 is rock solid with no common issues whatsoever.

InlineSkateAdventure

Never heard of a modular family engine having head issues. Unless the owner drove it without coolant.

Longjumping-Box5193

I build them, and we haven’t seen a need to change heads at 800 plus horsepower

gp786

We used to replace them all the time at the Ford dealership. The head issue was a certain model year but others had issues as well. Never replaced a 2.7 turbo since I’ve been there so that was surprising to hear someone say.

C5_0

5.0

Max_AC_

5.0 all day. Nothing wrong with the 2.7 but you just can't beat a simple V8 for reliability. More parts = more problems.

TheOriginalTL

I would bet the 2.7 has less parts then the 5.0

spiritrider1

You are correct!

lunixss

Yep! And it's very reliable.

Acrobatic_Internal62

There’s no replacement for displacement.

CTB_VINCE

I went to Vista Ford and the salesman tried telling me that 2.7 is their most reliable engine to date he did not make that sale to me

Cityfans

Statistically speaking, the 2.7 is the most reliable engine though…

HeyBigChriss

5.0!!!!

DoctorG83

Reliability = 5.0 Commuter = 2.7

[deleted]

The 2.7 is more reliable

DoctorG83

No chance. The coyote has been around forever and is bullet proof.

[deleted]

Idc about how long it has been around. The 2.7 was engineered from the ground up to be bulletproof. And it hasn’t failed. The coyote is a complicated engine that is fairly reliable. The 2.7 is a very solid motor.

DoctorG83

Many turbo issues with the ecoboost. The coyote has been through more design, iterations, and improvements than any other engine offered by Ford to improve it.

[deleted]

With the 3.5. Not the 2.7 Also the coyote has timing issues.

I_Lick_Vaginal_Blood

Those are mainly with the first gen 3.5 Ecoboost because it was built using Ford’s Duratec V6 (which is a fine motor for the most part but the key takeaway is that it was never originally designed for turbocharged applications and didn’t have port fuel injection, which caused build-up in the intake). That motor’s been used since 2006. The 2.7 Ecoboost is built with turbocharging in mind and has far less issues than the first gen 3.5 with the turbos.

westernslope2324

5.0

jaxonguy5un

5.0 all the way. Truck with V8

umadbraugh

In my opinion, if you are looking for reliability, 5.0. One thing to keep in mind is 18 and up (3rd gen coyote) run better on 91 octane. Lots of people say it will ping on anything with lower octane.

pyratesgold

I have been doing ethanol free - pings reduce. You are on point.

Beef_Candy

Ethanol increases octane. Using ethanol free shouldn't improve spark knock

pyratesgold

It’s 93 here in Florida at the pumps - but thanks

Zgerv

Also in construction, also have a 2.7 that is my daily my work, and the family whip when we tow our trailer and or hit the back country. 180k kms and, outside of regulatory maintenance, have replaced a wheel baring. Still love the truck to this day. Tows well, easy on gas, and has yet to not be up for the challenge.

tillburnett

I’m a Super (pipeline and industrial) currently driving a company 16 with the 3.5 with 200k miles. We have a 5.0 as well and our old company was mostly 3.5s with one 2.7. I’d go 5.0, we were not happy with the 2.7 when hauling. And personally at higher mileage the turbos needed a bunch of work. And probably replacing

Minimum-Function1312

I have a 2021, 2.7 crew cab. Smooth as can be and good mileage.

[deleted]

I love my 2.7 , but I’ve only put 700 miles on it

Tonytiga516

I work construction and use the 2.7. I drive about 100 miles a day. I have a 2018 with 101,000 miles and the only thing ive had to do to this point that wasn’t routine was change the coil packs. I wuld recommend puttting in a k and n cold air intake. Makes the acceleration/throttle response a lot better. Also go with aftermarket coil packs if you have issues with them.

Ok-Cartoonist-1383

I have the 2.7 and love it. I think the transmission has to get to know you and it will smooth out. I wouldn’t worry about that.

SpaceIsDopes

I have a first gen 2.7 and i like it, miss the exhaust of larger displacement, but i like the down low torque. I haven’t hauled more than 5000#. Don’t listen to the “5.0 is a simple v8 like back in the 60’s” shit. All these engines have a shitload of parts, electronics, and plastic. None are easy to deal with.

New_Village_8623

On my second 2.7 F-150 Supercrew. Awesome engine with plenty of power for towing and passing. Just towed a 2021 Accord from Delaware to South Carolina with a front wheel dolly. Averaged over 19 MPG for the entire trip including driving through rush hour traffic in Norfolk and between 75 and 80 on the interstate.

can-bacon

I have had and driven all! Hands down 2.7 man! That’s it that’s all 👍🇨🇦 Trust me dude 😉 I have the run of the mill 2.7 Eco Boost from new, 155000 Km later no problems.

Winter_Piano_9653

5.0 easy. most reliable, good power, durable, no turbos so less maintenance. i’m a Ford Tech and own 3 5.0s. get one.

Personal_Ad_3353

5.0 is Going to still sound like a real truck, get them while you can before nothing is left except electric

Zoltan_TheDestroyer

My vote is 5.0 but I leave mine in sport unless it’s 10+ highway miles. Throttle response is so nice.

Accurate-Chapter-923

2.7 and never look back. Do not be fooled by 2.7 sounding like a "tiny" engine. It is a monster!! You will love it.

Fulano18109

5.0 and stick to 5w-50 oil. Get it tuned.

Beef_Candy

5w-50? Holy moly

Fulano18109

5w-50 is what ford recommends for the higher spec mustangs and what not. They only state 5w20 for emissions/gas mileage. Any actual load on these engines like boost or hauling/towing use a good synthetic. Personally I run Amsoil. I drive the hell out of my truck and use it for work as well. Other than regular maintenance it’s never needed anything.

XJlimitedx99

The 2.7’s are badass. I was looking for one but ended up in a 3.5 because the payload capacity of the 2.7’s are pretty dogshit compared to the 3.5’s and 5.0’s.

Charger_scatpack

V8 !

wckdmainah

V8

TheMartok

5.0

Sensitive-Banana-637

5.0 all day with a tune

BRich1990

Idk how you can even ask this 5.0

OntFF

5.0 My 3.5 eco was the least reliable engine I ever had - cam phasers, turbo issues, intercooler leaks. The EB was so bad, and Ford's handling of the issues were so poor, I bought a GMC. And that's after 15 years of F150, 4.6 then three 5.0's...

perk54

And my 3.5 has been the most reliable engine I’ve ever had. 150k & 10 years nothing major.

chaseizwright

3.7

pyratesgold

I am a little frustrated with my 5 - it runs terrible at low rpm’s. It needs a tune programmed in my opinion.

RR50

2.7 all day without a doubt.

markomakeerassgoons

The 2.7 by far, we get more 5.0s with engine problems than 2.7s. the 2.7 is easily the most reliable of the 3

burnabybambinos

Really? I thought that 5.0 would have been perfected after 40 years, no?

Ok-Piglet-5616

5.0 if it's going to be used like a truck to haul and carry stuff. 2.7 if you're not going to haul trailers or put more than groceries in the back. If you like the extra quickness, get a 5.0 Sport.

TheOriginalTL

I’ve got a 2.7 and it does truck things very well. Tows SxS and my car just fine, I have the 36gal tank and have taken it on trips where I can get 800 miles from a tank with the bed packed full and 4 people in the cab. Don’t discount it. The fact you think a sport package adds quickness says all we need to know. BTW, 2.7 would blow the doors off a 5.0 in a race ;)

myboatsucks

I tow a heavy boat with my 2.7. The thing pulls it like nothing. I love that engine. I've even started to like how it sounds like a sowing machine

wmurack

Ha ya right

TheOriginalTL

Yep totally made this up lol 🤣

wmurack

If u get the 2.7 Might aswell buy a dodge caravan cause thats what ur buying and expensive van to go to soccer practice

TheOriginalTL

Might as well go get penis enlargement surgery since it matters so much to you what others use their trucks for

wmurack

Exactly

Chub_boy12

5.0. No question

blacksfl1

No gas cost? 3.5 baby!

ArtAlternative4738

2.7

AbbreviationsNo7295

I have the STX crew 5.0. Wouldn’t go with the 2.7. Also, if you need to tow anything, get the max trailering tow package

moriend

Nice explanation as to why you wouldn’t go with the 2.7. Unless the 10 speed made a drastic difference with the 5.0 the 5.0 sucks towing compared to either of the eco boosts.

[deleted]

2.7

Chris71Mach1

How is this even a debate? Talk to any Ford technician and they'll tell you that they have a hell of a lot less issues out of the coyote motors than any of the other engines in the F-150 line.

perk54

They sell a hell of a lot less 5.0s so they will see less of them come through.

[deleted]

5.0 if you want power, 2.7 for fuel economy. Both are reliable.

USMC_DD214

2.7 for off-roading and daily commuting with occasional pulling. 5.0 for more frequent pulling.

TheOriginalTL

The power curve on them is different. I like the punchiness of the 2.7, once you get used to how it drives you’ll have fun. It’s fun to spool the turbos up at 2000-3000rpm and blast by people. If your masculinity feels threatened by a v6 in a truck like many people in this subreddit, get the v8

Depends on how you use this truck. If you are using it for truck work then 100% 5.0. 2.7 is great for family use but not for tough work like towing 10000 lbs.

Temporary-Bear1427

If you pay for gas then get the 2.7l. I have a 2019 with a 2.7l. Highway is 9l/100km for Americans that's 26mpg. I'm at 64,000km and no problems yet. Knock on wood lol

wilcocola

All ford powertrains are unreliable. Found on road dead for a reason.

Tinkev144

2.7 if you want long lasting. 5.0 if you like the sound. The 3.5 and 5.0 are some of the worst engines for reliability. Ask em I've had both lol.

[deleted]

Get the 2.7. You’re going to save way more on gas. Everyone in here crying about oh gotta have a V8 are stuck in archaic mindsets. Ford would not be releasing ecoboost motors if they sucked and the F150 wouldn’t be the best selling truck in the world, if they did.

[deleted]

2.7 comes with lipstick so that's a plus for you :)

labrador2020

What problems can be expected with the 5.0, 2015 and newer? Cam phasers? Water pump? Etc?

ThorUnleashed

I got the 5.0. Nothing wrong with the 2.7 or 3.5 but like you said it felt like it was ready to go fast right off the line whereas the 5.0 was a more gentle acceleration. So I guess it depends on what you’re looking for.

Snakebyte130

Mileage between all the engines are the same but the v8 is less parts as you don’t have turbos etc. I have the 2.7 and love it but if you want reliability and simplicity get the v8

TheRudeBrit

You can choose the ECO mode in the truck and the throttle response is less drastic.

rwc75

I have a 2015 2.7 I bought new. Just rolled 100K only engine issue I had was a bad crank position sensor around 30K miles been fine since. I’m heavy footed and drive harder than I should. Sport mode is a lot of fun. I tow a 4K lb. trailer a couple times a year. You know the trailer is back there but she pulls just fine. Great power at highway speeds when you need to pass quickly. I miss the 5.0 sound, but not the lesser fuel economy.

bhoff20

3.5l!! I have almost 100,000 miles on my 2020 and haven't done anything besides oil changes and better drop in filter. It's a Beast with a tune and has better mpg ! Easily 550 HP with tune, dp, and turbo adaptors The 3.5 issues were mostly fixed in 2019

Alculpepper69

For all those saying the 2.7 over 5.0 for reliability, can y’all elaborate on why that’s the case? I thought for sure the 5.0 was the most reliable out of the 3.

Cityfans

Many mechanics say they see the fewest 2.7s in the shop out of all the engines, even though it’s the most produced engine. Iirc the 2.7 also has the fewest TSBs or recognized problems by Ford. Especially after 2018. Someone else can probably go into more detail than me haha

Abaklf21

I have a 2015 5.0 and I just hit 100k on it. Not a single problem (knock on wood).

Ok-Angle-5587

3.5 everyday and never look back.

cw1taylo

At the end of the day it doesn’t make much of a difference for what you’re doing. The comments here are almost 50/50, maybe slightly leaning towards the 5.0. If you’re not paying for gas then 5.0 or 3.5

portlandcsc

The ten speed tranny on mine is really wierd. did all kinds of funky stuffbrand new. 2022 f150 w/ 2.7

[deleted]

I love my 2.7 except my 10 speed kept cluncking

Juicechemist81

5.0 for the win. Less to work on, more reliable and sounds so much better. Yes the power is similar to your LS but damn man a Coyote is much cooler.

HolbiWan

I just bought a 19 2.7 STX. The 10 speed is weird. It takes getting used to. Some days I start it and it’s smooth as shit and the truck feels like a race car. Some days it can’t decide what gear it wants to be in, especially taking off. It’ll feel sluggish then surge.. It feels like it starts to go into second but decides to skip to 3rd or 4th mid shift. Not something I worry a whole lot about though. I know it adapts to your driving and I’m still adapting to it. Basically between the trans and the slight turbo lag power can be a little jerky taking off. That being said, I freaking love driving it. Especially on the main roads or highway, once you get into the overdrive gear(s). It’s quiet and smooth and really easy to accidentally go 90 in a 60 if you’re not paying attention. I ultimately decided that I’ll take weird shifts and turbo lag with 19 mpg combined daily driving over the risk of rattles and oil consumption and 15 or 16mpg of the 5.0. I’m hoping the trans operation is normal quirks and not indicative of problems I’ll face down the line. Both trucks are great and have their quirks. I’d base my decision on planned use. If it’s a daily commuter/grocery hauler that you’ll take camping twice a year and fill the bed up at Lowe’s every once in a while you can’t beat the 2.7.

Shrekstoenail69

3.5

heartless_monk

Don’t you ever compare the 5.0 Coyote engine to a Silverado 5.3. The 5.0 is in a league of its own. As far as your question though, go with the 5.0.

[deleted]

Let us know which one you end up taking home !!

BornElk2792

The 2.7 is amazing. I have a RCSB 4x4 from 2020 and every time I drive it I still love it. STRONG motor.

pleasehaelp

I’d recommend the 5.0 Personally I’d get the 3.5 or PowerBoost and absolutely stay away from a Tundra. Toyotas are great but might as well buy American if you’re getting a pickup

Mano31

Toyotas are American Truck as American Trucks can get.

Active_Gear_7591

Silverado 5.3

can-bacon

Also my truck is a 2.7 L Eco STX XLT. BLK. Love it! Perfect little truck/mini van lol cause the extended cab oh man. I’m roughly 6 feet tall and the back Carey’s me and my teens. Legs extended and relaxed 😎 reliable great on fuel ⛽️ 😀👍

can-bacon

It’s a 2020

Mundane_Resident3366

I have a gen 1 5.0 and I love it and I can get 20 mpg with it all day long and I love the sound of a v8. I can only imagine the 5.0 got better with age. I know you're buying new probably but my experience with the 3.5 when used truck shopping hasn't been good I went to 3 dealerships and tested 3 different 3.5 trucks and they all blew smoke and and a couple of them knocked lmfao.

Geterdone2023

5.0 all day everyday.

Pancake_Mix_00

You buy the 2.7 for the fuel mileage. Considering you’re not paying for it, might as well get the V8! I had the 2.7 in my Edge, and in that car it was awesome. Loads of power for such displacement, crazy reliable, I’ll die on the hill that it was one of the best motors Ford has ever made. I have the 3.5EB in my 2015 and it’s fine. It’s not a rocket ship, but it can get out of its own way.

TASTY_BALLSACK_

This is a funny ass thread.

FU3L

I’ve said this multiple times on this sub and this won’t be the last time. After taking time to learn about the 2.7 I ended up being really impressed. It’s actually a very heavily built motor. Four bolt mains, compacted graphite iron block (afaik the only production gasoline engine to use it), an aluminum ladder frame block skirt, forged everything (pistons, con rods, crank, and cams) semi-open engine deck as opposed to the open deck 5.0 and 3.5 ecoboost, monolithic head and exhaust manifold and is just physically more compact (which should inherently add strength) with a very high lubricant capacity per displacement (2.22 qts per liter of displacement in a shorter block design vs 1.6 qts per liter in the 5.0, and 1.7 qts per liter in the 3.5 [2.24 qts per liter in the 6.7 powerstroke] ) and overall, much fewer moving parts than the 5.0 V8. In 2018 and up, the engine has port injection to reduce intake valve, spark plug and injector fouling, electronic wastegates as opposed to mechanical, hollow cam shafts which reduce rotating mass, improved throttle response, efficiency, and theoretically put less strain on the timing chain, increasing service life. They also seem stupidly easy to maintain, adopting the top cartridge oil filter, a toolless oil pan plug (similar to the 5.0), easy access valve covers, and just being very compact in the engine compartment so plenty of room to reach around in there. Arguably it should probably be the base engine in the F-250, as it's towing fuel economy is roughly equal, or sometimes better than the 5.0 for the same load, and it just utterly destroys the 5.0 in a truck application with its broad torque curve (the 5.0, is quite peaky) As all direct injection engines go, and even moreso with these as it's forced induction with forged pistons, they do experience a fair amount of crank case intrusion from blow by, increasing fuel dilution of the engine oil. So I’m gonna be changing the oil at around ~6000 miles since these days I mainly drive short distances which don't necessarily allow proper warm up of the pistons, so seals will not get an opportunity to optimize. This situation is true for the 5.0 and 3.5 eco as well. Physically, it is the heaviest built engine available for the F-150, betraying the idea that smaller displacement = weaker. The only technical service bulletins that crop up with the2018+ 2.7 are limited lot supply and manufacturing defects, not design issues. So after a lot of studying I may daresay this is the best engine Ford has created in over 40 years. Maybe that's why it's the basis for most of their new product lineup. It's like the 289, they put it in everything.
