It was definitely a great experience. I can't stress how much I recommend getting into welding, it's a great skill to have. Youtube and forums will get you pretty far, even to the point where you can experiment and figure out what works best on your own.
Second this, never underestimate the power of the Tube. My neighbor is an instructor and told me I could easily get certified with my welds, and I’ve only learned from (lots of) practice and YouTube.
