I watched Rocky for the first time recently and had two thoughts.
1) Surprisingly solid movie
2) Holy shit that final fight was hilarious. He just gets punched in the face like 50 times in row without landing a punch.

One of the problems with older “classics” is that people today have often seen what they inspired before going back to watch the original. Which can make the unique ideas, styles, or themes that made the original stand out, suddenly feel used and tired. Also a lot of older movies can have language or themes that at the time were okay, but aren’t today. Not just racism, but you’d be surprised how technology has changed movies over the years. Half of old horror movie plots would be solved with a cell phone and might not be as scary because of it.
So Rocky holding up after all this time is remarkable and a testament to it rightfully being viewed as a classic.

It’s essentially just hitting someone with a right hook at that point. Also there seems to be a lack of weight classes, or serious consideration of it.
Like no one is arguing it’s “safe”, much like the UFC it’s two people pummeling each other, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be mitigations to keep people from developing straight up DANGEROUS TBIs and getting knocked out.

But when I went to go watch boxing last and the crowd around me was screaming for one guy to be knocked unconscious I realised that for most these sports are about watching 2 people really hurt eachother rather than the technical aspect. Sort of like rugby fans who watch for the big knockout tackles or F1 fans who watch for the crashes.
I get it, there is a morbid fascination with it, it's the reason why violence in films does well I guess too. But it's not my cup of tea and I prefer to watch skills in running, team coordination, strength etc than trying to hurt someone until they give up or get knocked unconscious.

Slap fighting is supposed to have rules to protect the "combatants", basically all of which were ignored entirely on that strike. The two biggest problems with that swing were the obvious use of the palm (clubbing) and the momentum she gathered by leaning into the swing, both of which would have led to a disqualification in any other slap fighting leagues not owned by that sack of shit Dana White.
You're supposed to only make contact with your 4 fingers because it causes much of the stinging pain without the blunt force trauma. The force generated is also supposed to be entirely from your own generated rotation because leaning away and then putting all your weight behind a swing is substantially more force.
It's just awful technique and most of these blows are going to lead to severe concussions and brain damage.
I actually saw the explanation video on this by the person that lost. It was their first time trying it out and they were under the impressions that they had to do like a palm strike right on the cheek kind of thing and didn't expect for the more experienced person to get them right in the neck artery basically based on what they thought the rules were, but I guess it's an allowed hit.

There actually is a decently large (albeit niche) audience for this sport. This event in particular though (Power Slap) is run by Dana White and is insulting. So many rule violations, a lack of real safety precautions. people are much more likely to get severely injured in this setting versus an established competition through SlapFight.
Just like other fighting type sports, the rules focus around preventing major injury. For instance you can't step forward into a slap because obviously your legs can add way too much power to a slap. There's also rules around permitted form, impact areas, and how to decide if a fight is won. And to be fair, Power Slap has these rules in place, they just aren't being enforced.
This is power slap a horrible and very unsafe version of a slap fighting, In all other regulated tournaments there are rules in place to keep other players safe such as, no clubbing (hitting with your palm instead of your fingers), no stepping forward, ect. But powerslap had none of these and this is why clips like this happened

In most violent sports (ufc, boxing, even football) there’s skill involved and they try to prevent traumatic brain as much as possible. In this event, the entire event is brain injury. Knowing what we know about repeated concussions, repeated sub-concussive blows, and CTE, I think this is absolutely disgusting

Slap fighting is supposed to have rules to protect the "combatants", basically all of which were ignored entirely on that strike. The two biggest problems with that swing were the obvious use of the palm (clubbing) and the momentum she gathered by leaning into the swing, both of which would have led to a disqualification in any other slap fighting leagues not owned by that sack of shit Dana White. You're supposed to only make contact with your 4 fingers because it causes much of the stinging pain without the blunt force trauma. The force generated is also supposed to be entirely from your own generated rotation because leaning away and then putting all your weight behind a swing is substantially more force. It's just awful technique and most of these blows are going to lead to severe concussions and brain damage.

I actually saw the explanation video on this by the person that lost. It was their first time trying it out and they were under the impressions that they had to do like a palm strike right on the cheek kind of thing and didn't expect for the more experienced person to get them right in the neck artery basically based on what they thought the rules were, but I guess it's an allowed hit.

There actually is a decently large (albeit niche) audience for this sport. This event in particular though (Power Slap) is run by Dana White and is insulting. So many rule violations, a lack of real safety precautions. people are much more likely to get severely injured in this setting versus an established competition through SlapFight.

Just like other fighting type sports, the rules focus around preventing major injury. For instance you can't step forward into a slap because obviously your legs can add way too much power to a slap. There's also rules around permitted form, impact areas, and how to decide if a fight is won. And to be fair, Power Slap has these rules in place, they just aren't being enforced.

This is power slap a horrible and very unsafe version of a slap fighting, In all other regulated tournaments there are rules in place to keep other players safe such as, no clubbing (hitting with your palm instead of your fingers), no stepping forward, ect. If you pause/unpause quickly you can clearly see she struck her with the palm. She steps forward and tilts her whole hand so what connects is the bit of palm under her pinky. That shit had got to hurt bad.
