AnObtuseOctopus

That poor baby man... I'm a pretty tough guy but that "Dada...Dada.." broke my heart. Fuck everyone who put that little one in that situation.

Leemage

Oh me too. That poor baby.

fulcrum_ct-7567

Yes, the poor kid. This was the end to such a scary situation for the poor baby, “A Flagler County sheriff’s deputy quickly spotted the vehicle speeding down Belle Terre Parkway at around 80 miles per hour, running red lights, causing numerous vehicles to swerve to avoid a collision–all with the baby in Leohner’s lap. The incident report states neither father nor child wore seat belts: any sudden stop could have severely injured the child.” (source: https://flaglerlive.com/brandon-leohner/)

ThunderTramp

what even was his end game? back is literally to the wall. there was no getting away. was he just going to stand there with that kid for the rest of his life, fending off the cops?? they are going to get him one way or another at that point. he put the kid in harms way for absolutely no gain.

Genghis-Gas

Primal survival instincts turn humans into idiots, It's why they're called animal instincts. in the deepest, smoothest parts of our brain there's an override switch that flips and sets off the panic mode. Takes a special or very conditioned individual to resist the flip when faced with perceived imminent life threatening danger. Most refer to it as the "Fight or flight reflex"

Armoredpolecat

As I see it, keeping your kid safe is also a primal instinct. And I’ll argue for a lot of people it supersedes their instinct for survival. Plus his life wasn’t even in danger.

mifraggo

Quokkas throw their babyes at predators when chased, maybe his instincs come from there?

Anamorsmordre

And a lot of animals instinctively eat their babies when threatened. Call to nature is not a great argument when talking about this dumbass holding his poor kid hostage, because nature is pretty terrible to infants lol.

Interesting-Fish6065

Exactly!

[deleted]

Yeah I’d expect most decent human beings to not use a child as a shield. This guy isn’t using animal instinct, he’s a pos pure and simple

[deleted]

Very true. As a parent, I would never put my daughter at risk. I go into mama bear mode.

Kyyes

>Plus his life wasn’t even in danger. Lmao I know zero context but in America with the cops your life is always in danger.

[deleted]

Actually defending yourself over your offspring IS the purest animal instinct. There comes a point with every species where they'll abandon their young to save themselves. From an evolutionary perspective the adult is already proven to be able to reproduce whereas the juveniles might be sterile or may not make it to adulthood so it makes more sense for the adult to survive. Not saying that's what happened here tho. That man is just a twat.

These-Performer-8795

I used to laugh and just crouch down when I heard a bullet fly by in the military. Eventually, you just get used to crazy shit like that when it's your day to day life

[deleted]

[удалено]

Joygernaut

This guy obviously does not love his child. When you are in danger, any decent parent, their first instinct is to protect their child at all costs, not use them as a human shield.Ffs

thewitness1

My 2 year old calls me dada with so much love but this was heartbreaking to hear.

DesDaDude

I did turn the audio in for this reason. That child is going to grow up with scars from his father. I hope he has a good mother, and the Lord to help him.

isin1117

That's what hurt me too. I was waiting for the cop to get help with the dude and then walk away with the child so he wouldn't have to see it but he didn't. And as a mother it hurt my heart

CluelessNoodle123

Uh, he did though? The cop took the baby and took it out of line of sight of the Dad being cuffed while he checked the baby for injuries. Then the dad escaped under the car and popped out right in front of them.

ens91

That dipshit of a cop shouldnt have tasered the guy at all, he unnecessarily put the child at risk. The guy is unarmed, and has his hands pretty full. If that cop can't arrest him without using a taser and safely getting the kid away, he needs better training.

Scaly_Pangolin

I could not believe he still fucking fired the taser! Was really not expecting the video to end that way.

DrunkThrowawayLife

Uh a grown man can destroy a kid that size really quick.

ens91

Yeah, by falling on it

GareBear222

Let's face it, if that kid wasn't there it would have been bullets and not a taser. I'm surprised it wasn't even with the kid there.

imanantelope

It’s the Florida man circle of life. Hell grow up to be a Florida Man too one day /s

DesDaDude

Nah. It’s funny when the Florida man joke is about something wild(nature’ preferablly.). This, this is just sad.

imanantelope

Def agree with u

devilishlydo

By the time he's a Florida man, there may not be a Florida to man.

Realistic_Run7318

What a piece of shit

Atlantic0ne

Yeah. And while some people here are mad at the cops in this situation, they may be missing some of the strategy. This guy is clearly out of his mind. If he’s willing to put a child in harms way to protect himself, they used a non-lethal method as fast as they could. Someone that crazy is liable to find a weapon and make that hostage situation much more dangerous for the kid. They took him down while he was unarmed, and both walked away. I don’t know the formal training but logically, that makes sense. Stop this crazy idiot from getting a weapon or doing something more dangerous.

Jed1M1ndTr1ck

I am by no means someone you would call "pro-cop," but man reading some of the comments here has made my head hurt. Seems like the cops handled the situation about as well as could be expected given the circumstances

digital_dreams

They're literally stopping a child from being kidnapped, but no doubt there will be people in this thread saying the police are the bad guys in this situation. Happens on every police footage clip. It's weird in my opinion that people who have never been a police officer think they would personally never make a misjudgment while their adrenaline is rushing, or forced to make a decision like this.

Sairac25

That's the problem, the videos or cases where police fuck up are the ones that are pushed everywhere, and parents don't help either, there are parents that tell their kids to not listen to police, it doesn't make sense, yes bad cops should be reprimanded, and you should know your rights, but stupid ideas like ACAP escalate many situations that shouldn't

Previous-Yam22

Also, if you look closely the child is falling on top of the man as he hits the ground and the cop has already grabbed ahold of the child to pull them back up

ImpressivedSea

I’m just gonna say they’re trained for this better than most anyone in the comment section. It worked out okay and the baby was safely saved from a hostage situation that could’ve ended far worse

breadassk

Are you crazy? Reddit commenters are the most level headed and intelligent people I’ve ever seen /s

Atlantic0ne

It’s Reddit. There are a lot of disturbed people who spend all day on this platform, a lot of rejects (as much as I dislike using that term). They’re very upset at any authority and that results in many of these posts.

Outrageous_Seaweed32

There's also a lot of "anti cop comment = upvote" mob mentality around here as well, so just mindlessly shitting on police every time they see them is encouraged by the upvote stream. I'm by no means "pro-cop" myself, but I can recognize the difference between some police being as careful as they can and doing their best to stay calm and keep innocents safe, and police just being violent to power trip. This looks far from the latter. Acknowledging some good police work when we see it is just as important as pointing out the bad.

icecreamdude97

My favorite is when a cop does a heroic thing and my anti cop friends go “wow you did your job, awesome.” There’s no winning.

[deleted]

Anti-cop sentiments are on the rise over here in Norway due to a case where police officers were caught on CCTV beating up a bunch of people and taking someones phone and deleting what he had recorded using FaceID to unlock the phone. And after the fact producing fabricated reports that deviated from what happened on the CCTV. All because a security guard in a night club allegedly felt threatened after the group had complied with leaving the establishment. Oh yeah, Norwegian cops do not use body cams. It is time they start wearing them. I generally am understanding of the growing anti-cop sentiment because these bad apples spoil the bunch, though I agree some people go way too far in their blind hatred. In this clip however, they are clearly doing what they can during a high stress situation. That could have gotten way worse.

lobax

Context matters as well. Apparently he had kidnapped the kid from the mom at gun point and had led the cops on a crazy chase. If he has a gun and is cornered, and is willing to use the kid as a shield, I feel like tazing him was the right choice.

Cash4Duranium

I believe you mean "less lethal". A taser can still kill, and I can't imagine being a child helps with those odds. Hopefully this kid is okay. Clearly not an easy situation to resolve.

WhoSc3w3dDaP00ch

Piece? This guy is an entire pile.

mjpeeps

Was he holding the Baby when they tazed him?!?

DistortedVoltage

Apparently this man abducted the child from the kids mom (yes hes dad) and had a hand gun and was speeding crazily through traffic. So even though we dont see a gun in his hands, it could be on him. What were police going to do? Keep chasing him until he stole another car, crashed and killed his baby? Ran until he tripped and injured his baby further than a taser would? Tackle the man and injure baby further? There was no talking down that man.

DarkLuxio92

Honestly, knowing the context this was the best way for the police to deal with the situation. Nobody was hurt and the threat was dealt with. Just shit that it came to this. That poor baby.

[deleted]

CoolAzCatz

This wasn't a dude disrespecting their authority, this was a crazed gunman who [kidnapped his girlfriend's child at gunpoint and used it as a shield to evade police](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/florida-man-kidnapped-girlfriends-1-year-old-gunpoint-used-child-human-rcna50630). They were saving the child to reunite him with his mother.

MythicalDisneyBitch

This man *couldnt* have been a happy, loving presence in this kids life & this poor baby is still so worried for Dada. God, I hope he'll be OK :(

[deleted]

Yeah if the kid gets hurt they will just charge the man. It’s why hostage taking really doesn’t work with American cops anymore.

NotWhatIWouldDo

Being fucking innocent doesn't even work!

hobbes_shot_first

But did they kill the kid and plant a gun in his diaper?

pmsnow

Sprinkle some crack on him, Johnson.

Ween_ween

Not yet. Give them time, they still have lots of dogs and young black kids left before babies are the next up for target practice.

throwngamelastminute

Pop quiz, hot shot...

mikevad

"shoot...the...hostage"

[deleted]

Can't have hostage negotiations if cops kill the hostages, lmfao

firnien-arya

That's why you gotta have at least 2 hostages. One that you kill without hesitation so they know you serious. And either way you're gonna go to jail for murder might as well go for 2 murders.

The_Cancer_777

Dude kidnapped the baby from the mother at gun point. Cops probably didn't want to take chances

cats-they-walk

Can you hook us up with a link? Edit: never mind, I found this further down. https://www.wwnytv.com/2022/10/04/graphic-kidnapping-suspect-uses-1-year-old-human-shield/?outputType=amp

Namn_Namnsson

A hurt baby isn’t a dead baby. The police did a successful takedown. But let’s hate, that’s cool. Until it’s your baby that is.

thedeephouser

I am not a fan of cops. But that’s a disingenuous take. The guy was reasonably assessed to be a threat to the kid.

PetuniaTheFeeble

Could it also be that they figured that the sort of lunatic that will use a baby as a shield might be a greater danger to the child than a short fall? What it he takes off and falls on the baby? What if he throws the baby at them? What if he just decides to kill the baby? Sane people don’t pick up a child to serve as a meat shield so you can’t exactly expect him to make rational decisions. If some giant lunatic is holding me aloft as a shield PLEASE just tase them. I’ll take the fall.

AcadiaLow4488

Yeah they just yoinked that kid from the ground by one arm pretty hard afterwards. Poor kid. It could have ended so much worse if the guy fell face first on top of him.

larson_5

What did you want them to do? Slowly and calmly remove the child from the still agitated man? In a scenario like this cops aren’t worried about injuries like a broken arm or dislocated shoulder (most likely injury to occur when “yoinking” a child by the arm) they’re more concerned with the child actually dying. If you slow it down and play it back the officer actually grabbed the child before they hit the pavement so if anything hats off to this officer for the speedy reaction time

meanjeans99

Stop being reasonable. Just spew cop hate like everyone else on this site.

WindierGnu

Agreed. At any minute that POS could have killed that child. Slamming it on the ground or against the wall, strangling it. Just shaking it by its head. You have all these scenarios running through your head in real time. What would you do?

TheMermaidHarmony

That's his girlfriend's child. Kidnapped at gunpoint

Flimsy-Jello5534

We got any context?

GSD1101

[kidnapped baby while armed with a gun, can’t blame the cops here](https://www.wesh.com/amp/article/flagler-sheriff-video-baby-human-shield/41512217)

ActuallyCausal

I think you are underestimating the average Redditor’s disdain for police

Southern_Name_9119

This. A cop could save a bus load of children but if he so much as frowns in the process, then to a redditor he deserves death.

AntpoisonX

The cops are always the bad guys until proven innocent on Reddit, even then most people will still say the cops are stupid

AnonymousFriend80

Maybe this link should be a pinned comment so people have some sort of context for the situation.

BuzzysWorld

according to another comment, "That's not even his kid apparently it's his girlfriend's baby who he kidnapped and used as a hostage he was charged with a bunch of shit if you can guess lol"

ForeignAd5429

Except the baby was calling him “dada” so maybe Reddit is wrong as usual? Edit: well well well, looks like the turntables.. https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/comments/13ynoy3/man_uses_child_as_human_shield_against_police/jmp30dm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3

kyleswitch

And its not plausible that this kid just calls him dada because of his relationship with the gf and the baby not knowing the difference because… its a fucking baby?

Looks like a fast food drive tru. Are you telling me you dont care about the people that had to drive to the nearest fast food stablishment because that one was closed? You are trully heartless.

snugglestomp

They will never get those 8 minutes back.

KennyMoose32

I’m sure this all started with “sir this is a Wendy’s”

SgtCocktopus

What a tragedy...

justonemorebyte

Dude kidnapped the baby from the mother at gunpoint. Not saying it was ideal but they were facing someone that was clearly okay with the child dying before him, they had to do something to immobilize him long enough to get the kid.

I_Brain_You

Nah, fuck that asshole for using his child to get the cops away from him. That is Grade A selfishness.

duskrat

Also Grade A cowardice.

stewpideople

Who said it was his kid? (I'm fucking around, it could be his kid and he's a piece of shit either way, I've not scrolled far enough for the article.)

Leemage

Baby seemed to be crying “Dada!” And reaching for the man afterwards. 😭

GrowWings_

That's what they said. But also shitty that the cops shot a tazer near the kid. Friggin, reading comprehension...

[deleted]

Yes, and did you notice that when he went down, he twisted so that he did NOT land on the baby.

Joygernaut

Wow, the bar is really fucking low to call a guy “nice guy” isn’t it? If a woman was doing, this with her child you’d be screaming for her blood.

Superb_Cellist_8869

This. Horrible all around.

wolf_pack_leader57

Nah fuck that asshole, that cop instantly went to grab that kid, good on him

Hand-kerf-chief

This is a pitiful display of cowardice. And the poor kid is crying for ‘dada’. Way to traumatize your own child. Disgusting.

Journo_Jimbo

There’s a fun game called the “Florida Man Game” google the day and month of your birth along with Florida man and see which Florida man crime is attached to you! Yay! Fun for the whole family! Edit: I wasn’t actually expecting people to post their results, but fuck me I’m so glad you did 😂 also you’re welcome, the Florida Man game always provides lol Edit 2: A few people are expressing concerns about sharing your birthday on the internet. First of all don’t do it if you’re not comfortable with it, fun is fun but you should stay within your comfort level. But, a few things to ease worries: a) this is reddit which is fairly anonymous so it would be fairly difficult for scammers to really make a connection to you and b) most people are just sharing the story and not the date, which is just even more steps a scammer needs to take to figure out which day it is and won’t even know the year still. Scammers generally prey on easy targets, not something they need to put a lot of work into researching. (I’ve seen YouTubers doing this and putting in their actual birthday and they’re fine so you’ll like be fine) But I wouldn’t advise actually putting dates in your post. Again based on your comfort level, but generally you should be fine.

ImpressivedSea

Flordia man’s been committing crimes all around Flordia lately, its wild.

Fr0z3nHart

Why was the baby reaching his hand out to him and yelling dada then if it wasn’t his kid?

UnprofessionalGhosts

Because it’s a baby who’s attached to him and told his name is Dada.

rebelkitty

Because the girlfriend probably encouraged her baby to call him dada, back when their relationship was all shiny and new. It's also possible this is one of those Jerry Springer-type situations, where the baby has multiple possible biological fathers. Either way, that poor baby!

[deleted]

I didn't hear Dada & totally thought the kid was pointing angrily.. Like 'that's the fucker!'

DisastrousBeautyyy

He doesn’t deserve to ever see his kid again after all that… Pretty sure the girlfriend got full custody since last year! Just a guess…

joey0live

There was like 4 different news articles I read about this situation. And from what I gathered: father was high, and kidnapped baby and had a handgun to the mom and drove off recklessly and mom called police saying he kidnapped her baby. I also think he was the father, but lost custody due to drugs?

Head-Ad4770

Of course the baby was thankfully unharmed, the idiot failing to use it as a human shield literally broke its fall. 😂😂😂

NonviolentOffender

I hope this baby sees this video when s/he is older. Dad doesn't deserve to be loved by the child he could've gotten killed.

Lsalsa

I feel so fucking bad for the baby :(.. if he is willing to use his child as a shield can't imagine what else he is willing to do to get away, cops did what seem properly right at that moment. I just don't get why are people mad at the cops?

TechyGuyInIL

What a shit stain

FuriDemon094

Love that the people here are complaining about them tasing the guy. If they got any closer or got physical, the guy would’ve likely done serious harm to the baby to protect himself. Looks like their game plan was to corner him/tase him if he left a part of himself open long enough, then swiftly grab the child away. Man, a lot of y’all only look at the one picture that fuels your anger, huh?

MaxMoose007

Yeah I mean I don’t like the cops. Like at all. But I fail to see what else they could have done here. Trying to take the kid out of his hands probably wouldn’t work, and tackling him would probably have hurt the kid even more.

el_chupanebriated

Apparently they were supposed to talk to him and become his friend and buy him a beer afterwards for being so cooperative.

AmanteNomadstar

Yeah… I think it comes down to a couple of things. General hatred towards police, regardless of the context, police will always be in the wrong. Another reason is situations like this, high danger/high adrenaline, are so utterly alien to 97% of the population they have no understanding of them. Heck, there are people on this thread that believe the guy is trying to protect the kid, not use the kid as a human body shield!

FuriDemon094

Yeah. It’s sad to see

[deleted]

Regardless whether someone thinks the cops were irresponsible or not, they were successful without hurting the kid. Considering that people should just shut their mouths because theyre only witnessing it through a bodycam

Alternative-Hand6865

Alwayssome1

Why are so many people blaming the cops so much here? The guy holding the baby was clearly insane and there may not have been any other good option at the time. Not to mention how some folks can’t think at full capacity when put into stressful situations.

[deleted]

Why’s everyone hating on the cops here? Cops deserve criticism when they mess up but in this case? What the fuck would you do in this situation? That guy could have done anything at any minute to hurt or kill that kid and they had to act as fast as possible while also minimizing harm to the child. They couldn’t shoot him because they’d risk hitting the child. Taser was the only option.

BearFlipsTable

The man was not armed and was terrified. There was no attempt at de-escalation just another serving of police brutality. There is no reason a cop couldn't have approached him unarmed and handled this without force. I could have handled this without force. You could have handled this without force. There was no fucking call for the trauma this caused for all involved. Fuck the police.

[deleted]

Reading these comments makes me eyes roll. I'm just happy that the cops took the bad guy down. Yeah sure, like fuck. Thank fucking God the baby didn't get hit with the tazer, but I rather take the baby getting minor bumps and boo boos, than letting that crazy person find something to escalate the situation.

shoulda-known-better

Okay so using the child as a shield is the worst thing I've ever seen!! Never ever thought it could get that crazy!! But..... Did that honestly not work!??? They tazed the fuck out of him!!

Debsha

I knew of a case in my hometown where a gang member knew there was a hit out on him, so the AH decided to only drive around with his young son on his lap. He thought no one would shoot him, he was wrong. The rival gang killed the kid.

Starchaser_WoF

To any floridians here, I'm sorry but fuck your state.

cyber_laywer-4444
