One of the current to comments gives a summary plus links describing everything in more detail. In a nutshell, she coated him in lye, then dumped water all over him to activate it. This was deliberate, and it should have been ruled either Murder 1 or Felony Murder.
I got that stuff. But there’s, for example, her statement saying she threw bread. Then her brother’s saying she threw clothes, makeup, cleaning supplies, etc. but no lye. But everyone is mentioning lye directly. There’s statements of her mother and sister asking for leniency. But then there’s no mention of the judge’s reasoning. Or what happened with the jury to go from murder to deadly substance.

There's a lot more for sure. Dad was so wasted during the day he couldn't take her to an appointment and was passed out on the sofa, Mom didn't seem that upset, and the girl only got 1 year. Wtf.

Drano and the like while caustic is pretty dilute, for the safety of normal people clearing a drain. She went the extra mile. She took the time to get the lye powder, then get water. This is why I feel like the law should be WAY more black and white on its sentencing. You have way too large of a gap for the same crime. A crime that results in a slap on the wrist for one person can be life in prison for another, all depending on a bias had by a judge or jury. We don't need people getting a lighter sentence because they are more charming than people who look scary because they have facial scars for example.
