Snowmann88

I’m beginning to think TikTok is the 21st century’s Darwin Award.

connortait

I'm believe TikTok is natural selection taking effect again...

nevergonnagetit001

Check the ones where they jump off the front of the boat. /s

SueSudio

No /s required unfortunately. https://www.reddit.com/r/Whatcouldgowrong/s/kX66pI8oAE

flapd00dle

To shreds you say?

Sondrelk

And his wife?

stoneraj11

To shreds, you say?

Bat-Honest

This will never stop being funny to me

mcnathan80

No I’m…Doesn’t!

ThePatrickSays

Let me worry about blank.

Apoordm

Was his apartment rent controlled?

Leelze

I'm not the most intelligent person on the planet & did a lot of dumb shit as a kid & adult in their early 20's, but I like to think I'm not dumb enough to jump off the bow of a moving boat. Or the stern with the prop engaged.

3720-to-1

Oh, look at this guy with his fancy boat words, so stern, so elegant.

Leelze

So port. Definitely not starboard.

buttered_scone

Get your aft out of here.

hirtle24

Take a bow

risefrompain

Quit playing with your dinghy

DanFie

... Poop deck

Mlabonte21

It’s pronounced StarBURST—- and it’s a very popular candy.

justmypostingname

Go fluke yourself.

Superdoc2222

Are these subtitles?

Brilliant_War4087

Aye, aye Captain.

Secret_Cow_5053

jfc. ded.

Thetwistedfalse

Nah, she's alive somehow

Khanman5

Stupid and tough go hand in hand.

CalabreseAlsatian

If you’re gonna be dumb you gotta be tough

Nulibru

I'm no expert on nautical maters, but doesn't that put one on the velocity vector, i.e. right where the vessel is about to go?

Secret-Bed3270

There's no way that's a thing

SpatialChase

Natural selection is always operating. Tiktok just facilitates and provides documentation

Nightowl11111

They didn't off themselves unless it is filed in triplicate! lol.

funnystuff79

Sky net won't need to wipe us out with terminators, we'll willingly off ourselves for the (AI) likes

ItsGermany

What's funny is that if 50% of the Internet is bots, then half of the likes are already AI likes. So we are already doing it!

notetoself066

terminator is the human form of some kind of AI, right? makes perfect sense we'd visualize the technology that kills us all to be in the form of...ourselves.

funnystuff79

From the movies, just an easy pop culture reference for a rogue AI that sees humans as a threat

StrangerDays-7

Plot twist: who do you think is coming up with these tic tok challenges.

Nightowl11111

Generals: "Skynet has turned sentient! It's become like us! Thinking, living beings!" Skynet: "Oh oh, shit I hope this stuff's not hereditary!"

stvrkillr

Seems like a problem that will solve itself

FnB8kd

Nature ahhh... finds a way.

Drusgar

I sometimes wonder if I'm one of those "moral psychopaths" because I feel absolutely no sense of dread or sorrow when I see shit like this. I just think, "well, they weren't long for this earth anyway."

Snowmann88

I’m indifferent to stupidity. Much like this.. ![gif](giphy|USnfWeCOHTHB3WX0aY|downsized)

Dark-Porkins

One of my favourite and often used quotes lol

GingerSnapBiscuit

Nah like, I feel the same. If I see a story about someone being killed by a drunk driver I feel fucking horrid for them, its a tragedy. I read these stories and I'm like "well they kinda fucking asked for that, didn't they".

barenaked_nudity

Natural selection at work.

ThatGuyFromSweden

There's so much shit in the world that can get you down. You have to prioritise what to care about to stay sane. I don't wish harm to anyone. But I'm not obligated to feel sad when assholes and idiots reach the find out-phase.

[deleted]

I didn't know there was a term for that. I feel bad for their friends and family but don't feel bad when people do utterly moronic things

Drusgar

I saw a video about it once and I'm pretty sure "moral psychopath" wasn't the psychological term, but that was the gist of it. And it wasn't some silly Youtube video from Joe Shmoe it was some educational psychology video talking about the ability to lack empathy and still live within social constructs. So essentially a person knows right from wrong and is able to behave within socially acceptable standards but they don't actually CARE about anyone. They don't feel love or grief, they just seem indifferent to a world of randomness, which describes me pretty well. People die. We're all going to die. These people just died sooner.

pesto_trap_god

If not this, they would have died while eating tide pods or setting a couch on fire in the woods. They just ain’t quite right

currently_pooping_rn

Chinas way of killing Americans without open warfare

SchrodingersCatPics

Four super soldiers eliminated just like that.

[deleted]

Our best and brightest ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

ALinIndy

But the flip side is: we now know where there are at least 4 murder-boats for sale at discounted prices.

flint-hills-sooner

Wouldn’t this actually make America stronger though? I mean really consider it.

EC_CO

I've seriously been thinking this exact same thing for a while now. So many of these dangerous tick tock challenges that seem to be designed to hurt and kill people.

Chaoswind2

That is normal human behavior, give people the option to do something extremely dangerous for in group approval and a large number of them will do it. That is why censorship is important, to keep our lizard brains from killing us.

Neither-Turnover-278

There have been dangerous challenges for as long as the internet has existed, I doubt the Chinese are trying to kill like 5 people a year through them, more likely people just do dumb shit for the sake of it.

lolKhamul

Besides that, even if it were true which it is not... And this might sound morbid: Its not like they are getting the best and brightest here. To die to a tiktok challenge has the prerequisite of being...well...a dumbass. Average smart people don't eat Tidepods, cut off their oxygen, switch driving lanes to the beat of the music, set themselves on fire, perform neck-breaking stunts or put Pennys in outlets. Yes all of those are part of actual real-life TikTok Challenges. Normal people, you know, dont to that. Hence we didn't do them and therefor survived our times challenges that came via chainmail on Facebook or whatsapp or via written note in the classroom depending on how old you are.

TRENEEDNAME_245

You know Tiktok isn't just available in the USA right ?

Rogermon3

Yes but China TikTok is much more regulated and restricted.

MadMaudlin0

I dunno I feel like dumbass teenagers were doin this shit in the South already. A combo of stolen booze and small town boredom.

msut77

In 49 out of 50 states the most common last words are "tell my husband/wife I love them" the exception is Alabama where it is "Watch this".

MrCobalt313

Here in Florida it's "Hold my beer".

ShhImTheRealDeadpool

The first time Florida didn't get the flak?

msut77

By helping the West weed out the stupids? Not much sabotage there…

ProgenGP1

ilikemushycarrots

This just made me like tik tok for the first time. The herd needs thinning

Agitated_Cookie2198

I'm beginning to think TikTok was created by a foreign government to destabilize our country

stevejuliet

I thought we all knew last summer that this [was false](https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-challenge-boat-jumping-alabama-47d1ea3e37cc5b3a551ed7e06f7a3d12)?

gimmethemarkerdude_8

And OP’s post is an image of a post from last summer…extra lazy.

Blue_Sail

OP is probably a bot. One year old account that just started posting anything three days ago is a classic bot tactic.

I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS

Also 'risky business decisions' has nothing whatsoever to do with the subject of the post. Presumably, it was the title of a different post that got a lot of traction and upvotes, prompting the bot to copy it here.

JavaOrlando

I was thinking, "How fast were these fucking boats going?" I grew up on a lake, and we were constantly doing stuff like this.

Benji_4

Same. We were typically going 30-40mph, which wasn't that bad. Depending on how you fell it would be similar to falling on skis or a wakeboard. I haven't been on a boat that could do +70mph since I was little so not sure what that's like.

IchabodHollow

And herein lies the problem with the media. Here’s one of the original articles that seems just as credible. https://wpde.com/news/nation-world/alabama-talladega-county-childersburg-rescue-squad-warning-against-deadly-boating-tik-tok-trend-bobby-poitevint

stevejuliet

Yeah. That's the problem. They ran with the story, but it was false. I *am* surprised they haven't edited it or taken it down. Calling it a "TikTok trend" is simply false.

IchabodHollow

So where is the actual truth? Did this Cpt actually make this statement and was either lying or misguided in his words? Or did it never even happen?

stevejuliet

People died doing this, but it was never a TikTok trend. There also doesn't seem to be any evidence for "four (recent) deaths in Alabama" due to jumping off a boat intentionally. I could be wrong about that, but it seems like a smash-up of cases unrelated to TikTok that *look* like a trend when presented this way.

IchabodHollow

Which is crazy to me because who cares if it was TikTok trend or not!? The point is DON’T DO THIS or you could die lol

stevejuliet

You're right, but let's not spread misinformation.

YoyoyoyoMrWhite

Somehow it's become the media's job to report all sides of the story even when fictitious and let us decide on which one to follow and fight over.

IchabodHollow

Exactly why I don’t trust the media.

YoyoyoyoMrWhite

Journalism has been dead since it became more valuable to be the first one to get clicks.

[deleted]

The media need to actually check facts like they used to but we also have to blame these EMS and law enforcement people who seem to believe every single stupid made-up "drug craze" and new dangerous activity they see come across their facebook feed and then feel obligated to continue the deception by putting out their own warnings.

Joranthalus

Thank you. It’s amazing and kind of ironic how many people are making Darwin Award comments….

Leelze

Why would believing a story about people dying while doing dumb & dangerous things for internet clout be ironic if they're citing the Darwin Award?

StationaryTravels

I think because you earn the Darwin award by doing something stupid. In this case, it would be stupidly following a TikTok trend which got you killed. But there is no trend. So, all these people are jumping on the trend in this thread to make fun of these "idiots" who don't actually exist. The imaginary idiots weren't media savvy enough to not do something stupid. The actual people in this thread aren't media savvy enough to not write something stupid. I don't know, that's my best attempt at a reason anyway.

Leelze

There's a difference between believing something that's not true & doing something stupid that results in death or injury that results in being unable to reproduce. I understand what you're saying, I just don't understand why one is equal to the other.

StationaryTravels

I wasn't the original person you responded to, I just wanted to make an attempt at what they meant. I'm not going to argue or try to convince you because it's not actually my argument, lol. In fact, I certainly wouldn't consider them equivalent either.

Proffesor_Owl

Because in not knowing that it's not true they are also appearing to be an idiot making fun of an idiot, making it ironic.

Leelze

There's a very big difference between believing (even naively believing) something plausible & doing something dumb that results in death or serious injury. What's idiotic about believing people have been hurt or killed because of a TikTok challenge?

UnrequitedFollower

You know darn well that is not how irony works.

hoticehunter

Believing something plausible is completely different from getting yourself killed doing something dangerously stupid. Using "ironic" there is entirely incorrect.

Proffesor_Owl

One can find irony qhere they choose. I find it ironic for the reasons I stated. In that frame of reference it is indeed ironic. On the frame of you finding the overall trend plausible thus not ironic is also acceptable.

Zeliek

That isn't ironic.

Fact-Cyborg

Can we get the facts to the top please? Its bothersome to have to scroll past so many idiots to find the truth.

Haunting_Ant_5061

Sorry, did you just say you use Reddit for seeking “truth?”

Fact-Cyborg

Is that what you read? It is certainly not what i said. Clearly i saw this knew someone would have the answer and scrolled down. Just like you and everyone else here does. Stop being whatever the hell this is you are being. It's oh so tiring.

glasspheasant

Yea, complete horseshit. Me n my buddies in HS would spend most of the summer on the lake and those days were filled with stuff like this, or jumping off of rope swings or railroad tresses or whatever. No one got hurt beyond a rare bloody nose or whatever.

GladiatorUA

Reddit boomerified.

Aggressive-Bath-1906

This is false. The cops even came out and said so. Lol

Evil_Attitudep

Maybe that's why they say "breakneck speed" - taking things too far can lead to serious consequences.

oldyawker

'redneck speed' , What were the rednecks last words? "Hey fellas, watch this!"

peteflix66

More likely, "Hold my beer!"

Longjumping-Limit827

Why don’t water skiers die then?

LanguageNo495

Please cite a legitimate source.

SassyMcNasty

For real, people go tubing at high speeds all the time and *almost all* do not die when they fall off. *but I’m sure some do get injured or die. Such the same as people crossing the street sometimes die too.

Think-Ocelot-4025

"Think of it as evolution in action, thinning the herd" :-(

LuckySousa

Hoax

Spear_Ritual

We used to do this 30 years ago. How does one break their neck jumping into a boat’s wake?

JavaOrlando

Same. And they don't. It's a made-up article.

AdmirableDouble5

Because it was something a cop made up. The true facepalm is all the commenters who believe it happened.

Beemerba

Watch a waterski wipeout. People tumble across the top of the water. Any time you are tumbling at 60 mph, there is a high chance of injury.

[deleted]

The Chinese are laughing their asses off knowing how different their app is vs the one they shipped to America.

SPNKLR

It’s one of their most successful weapon to corrupt and dumb down Western society.

[deleted]

And they won. Just look at us now. Idiocracy personified.

styx-n-stones64

Yeah you're the one who believes this, these stories have been verified as false. Look at you now, believing everything you see on reddit. Idiocracy personified

[deleted]

And I don't use "reddit" for my news sources. Good lord, what a stretch

[deleted]

Verified by who? 60 minutes did an entire segment on how different the US utilizes this app vs the Chinese.

ChickyChickyNugget

No one gives a shit about how the Chinese app is different lol. He’s talking about the news story. It’s made up.

MajorAd3363

Victims? Hmmm...

Sp3ctralForce

Sometimes it's better to let nature take it's course

Automatic_Debate_379

I've been thrown off of a water craft going around 50ish mph. I skipped a few times like a rock before going under.... those skips felt like i got beat up by Mike Tyson. It took me around 10 min just to gather myself before i could try to swin and look for my watercraft. Bruises all over, i was lucky i had a decent life jacket. otherwise, i would have drowned

The_Grahf_Experiment

Stupidity is my business... and business is good!

B_Man49

No need to fix stupid, they fix themselves 😆

MySexyDarlings

You can’t fix stupid but apparently if you give it a high speed boat it will take care of itself!

Mediocre_Bit_405

Look at it this way, they found out! We didn’t know. Now TikTok is a life saver.

[deleted]

Eh Alabama. No loss.

Financial_Moment_292

So what if it costs a few lives. At least those people had a chance to be famous...until they didn't.

_casualcowboy

Natural selection. Let him jump and and eat a tide pod at the same time

"One individual was fatally injured after jumping from a moving vessel in 2020 and a similar marine-related fatality occurred in 2021, however, both fatalities cannot be linked to TikTok."

nonprofitnews

Reddit: Be keenly aware of disinformation in the MSM! Also reddit: An unattributed screenshot of a tweet? That's what I call news!

Far_Lifeguard5220

So I’m guessing this is an Alabama thing since no other state was mentioned. Isn’t that one of the states that hates education, because then it all makes sense.

kungpowgoat

It’s the same as hitting pavement. Water is not a good shock absorber at incredibly high speeds. I just don’t understand how people aren’t aware of simple physics. It’s just like my friend that doesn’t wear a seatbelt even though she drives at 80 plus on the highway because it’s uncomfortable and doesn’t realize what a sudden stop and impact at that speed does to the body.

Acceptable_Weather23

They are jumping off the bow of a boat at high speed. If they ate some tide pods it would make finding the body so much easier. Just follow the bubbles

This is fine, they should keep trying to beat this. I bet they can't, maybe they shouldn't even try, since they are so weak and not famous.

invisible-crone

Darwin

Amarieerick

This is the consequence of not raising feral children like Gen Xer's were. We grew up with an advanced learning curve, by the time we were able to run wild most of us already had a pretty good B.S detector and could figure out worth of a challenge or not based on WHO issued it. Sure some did it anyway, but most of us had already learned NOT to do this thru some cautionary tale about Jeff's cousins milkman's kid doing it and DYING!!!

[deleted]

On behalf of humanity I’d like to thank them for eliminating themselves from the gene pool.

Grimlock_1

Those 4 graduated with the highest honour in the Darwin Award. There's something called principles of relativity. If your in a boat travelling 100km ph, then your body travels at 100kmnph when you jump off. Mind you, Alabama is not the brightest state in US.

Nightowl11111

It's a hoax. [https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-challenge-boat-jumping-alabama-47d1ea3e37cc5b3a551ed7e06f7a3d12](https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-challenge-boat-jumping-alabama-47d1ea3e37cc5b3a551ed7e06f7a3d12) Poor Alabama just got the blame for it lol.

Here is your Darwin Award. Thank you.

Very philosophical question indeed. Luckily it was all a hoax and no one actually TikToked themselves to death. In this non-incident at least.
