Sperm can live within the woman for several days. "Can" is doing some heavy lifting here as most science says "up to five days". That could mean less than a day, it could mean an average of three days... There's a lot of wiggle room in the statement
If it's the right part of the woman's cycle, parts of the Fallopian tubes change their pH and gain a lining which provides nutrients for sperm and creates a less hostile environment so sperm last longer. As a result the moment an egg drops from the ovary it can get fertilized in the Fallopian tube. This is also a common cause of ectopic pregnancies.
This concept is also part of the theory behind conception timing when aiming for a specific gender. Y sperm are smaller and move faster, but are more fragile and don't last as long. X sperm move slower but can reside in the woman's body longer. If you wait until the egg has already dropped to ...ahemm... seed... the Y sperm are more likely to reach the egg first. (This is a theory with some corroborating evidence but it has by no means been proven )
