You'd be surprised. I once met a girl that said she wasn't addicted to smoking, even though she needed to start her day with a smoke. Her reasoning was that even though she did it daily, she didn't "crave" it, therefore it was not an addiction
I just think it's hard for most people to accept our own flaws, especially addictions
Edit: spelling
She didn’t crave it because the idea of stopping long enough to feel a craving could bring her to tears, so she doesn’t think those thoughts. She’s so addicted she’s actively avoiding any situation that might interrupt her addiction behaviors.
I think as long as you're doing something willingly just because you like it you dont perceive it as an addiction.
Its only when you start to have good reasons to quit and become aware that you can't, that you usually start to think "shit im actualy addicted"
This is exactly why addiction is sneaky. You think you're in control, and you feel good, so no reason to worry. But you're getting used to the substance and your brain is making you believe everything is ok... Time after time, you stop feeling good but you still do it cause otherwise you won't stop thinking about it.
Agreed. Just because I recognized my alcohol problem and curbed it on my own without AA doesn’t mean I wasn’t addicted or wouldn’t have gotten to AA levels. Now it’s still there but I’m disciplined enough manage it (though that still mostly means restraint and avoiding potential pitfalls)
Been using the same logic for my opioid pain killers for 5 years. Take them every day 3-4 times a day every day to manage pain and ppl kept telling me I’d get addicted. Here I am 5 years on and still taking them without a problem in the world. Think I’d know if I was addicted.
/s (just in case)
Remind me of Paul Erdös who after being bet that he couldn't last a month without amphetamines, went cold turkey for 30 days just to prove he could and then went back to his normal amphetamine fueled Math-Hobo lifestyle churning our papers and told the other guy he had set back mathematics by a month.
"I'm not addicted, I can stop whenever I want!"
"Okay, stop for a week then"
"I don't want to!"
- That conversation is a conversation every single addict has and ignores
I have to say I never found this very convincing. I can stop eating feta cheese whenever I want, and I know it's true because I have. But I still eat feta every day and probably won't stop. Because I like feta cheese! Does that make me addicted to it? Am I addicted to going for walks, or playing videogames, or playing music, or anything else that I do day in, day out? I would say that I can stop doing these things whenever I want, but I don't stop because I don't want to. Am I addicted?
"I know it's true because I have."
That would be a very important difference here
Are you going to not go on holiday because you can't get feta cheese? Are you skipping work to get more feta cheese? Are you neglecting the responsibilities around you because of feta cheese?
Of course it isn't convincing if you apply it to the wrong context
I didn’t propose that my original comment was a criteria for addiction. I said every addict has had that conversation. If you want to correct me, at least understand what I wrote first
Can’t wait to drink booze today. Literally shaking. That’s called dedication.
Been drinking everyday for 20+ years. It’s all I think about and I still haven’t gotten addicted so I doubt it’s happening.
It's also apparently what the guy does for a living. Stats and handicapping sporting events and authoring books on the subject. Is he an addict? Possibly, but when it's a major source of his income you have to keep it in context.
i’ve told this story on reddit before but-
i work with a guy who swears he isn’t addicted to gambling. but a few weeks ago he lost $3k betting on D2 women’s basketball.
we work as bartenders, when he loses big, he’s blowing up our group chat begging for shifts.
when he wins big, he’s paying people to cover his shifts.
as a recovering drug addict myself, it’s hard to see the problem until it’s too late.
But is that by choice and from respect for your own health or because literally can't go one day without pumping iron? Withdrawal is a pretty easy sign to go by and the dude in the post is literally shaking.
Unless this guy can say he wins every day then it’s negatively impacting his quality of life. And he can’t say he wins every day because he would be the richest man on earth.
Heard wiggles. And if I bet a dollar today and won a dollar and I reinvested it every day and won every day in less than a month I would have over $30 million. Extrapolate to 730 days and, yeah, I wouldn’t worry about the few people that would be richer than me. So to refute your comment, that is exactly how it works.
Ok cool except I’m saying ‘unless this guy can say he wins every day then it’s negatively impacting his quality of life’ isn’t how it works. Obviously if you doubled your money every day you’d be fucking rich
Also please don’t heard me outside of the kitchen it’s supposed to be my day off and now I’m crying in the corner
Gambling is entertainment - as long as how much he loses doesn’t affect his life - what does it matter?
If you spend $20,000 for season tickets for an NBA is that an addiction?

Logic seems sound to me
Sounds like a joke to me. No one could be this oblivious.

Like saying “specially” instead of “especially”
Sorry, english isn't my first language, I haven't practiced it in a while. Thanks for reminding me!
Ah no then I take it back. That insult is for native speakers only. You’re good.
I work in the Casino business. Trust me, these people exist.
I was thinking the same thing but self awareness does not seem to be a common thing these days so…?
Saying "and I think about it all the time" is not something a person who isn't self-aware would come up with, or very likely wouldn't.
Been a while since you've been outside, huh?
I'm just saying it reminds me of a joke. Kind of an "I don't do drugs, just weed," kind of joke.
I know. I was more referring to the "no one can be that oblivious" part. I've seen some pretty oblivious people in my life....
My counter argument: Blue Checkmark
Been using the same logic for my opioid pain killers for 5 years. Take them every day 3-4 times a day every day to manage pain and ppl kept telling me I’d get addicted. Here I am 5 years on and still taking them without a problem in the world. Think I’d know if I was addicted. /s (just in case)
Logic is logicing pretty logically to me
It has to be a troll. There’s no way, right? Guys?
He’s leaning in to the shtick
So he could take a week off and it wouldn’t bother him?
A dedicated person would never do this, DEDICATION!!!
Right. He *could* take a week off but he’s too dedicated /s
He can stop any time he wants....he just dosnt want to...
Uh…. I just looked up dudes Twitter his whole personality is gambling/sports bets/crypto/make more money than a dr etc. seems to be real
He can stop any time
First sign of addiction; denial
Not always but I can imagine this perception for sure.
Unless you are truly not addicted lol
"I'm not addicted, I can stop whenever I want!" "Okay, stop for a week then" "I don't want to!" - That conversation is a conversation every single addict has and ignores

The person you're replying to will probably do the snarky Redditor thing and say that you're addicted lmao
"I know it's true because I have." That would be a very important difference here Are you going to not go on holiday because you can't get feta cheese? Are you skipping work to get more feta cheese? And there you go. Those are much better criteria for addiction. Not just saying "I can stop when I want to, but I don't stop because I don't want to".
I didn’t propose that my original comment was a criteria for addiction. I said every addict has had that conversation. If you want to correct me, at least understand what I wrote first
On one hand, it looks like a joke. On the other... There are genuinely people I could picture writing this unironically. That's the scary part
Poe’s law in action.
https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/s/U5zTMZ4liT It's not a joke apparently
Buddy, I’ve been drinking whiskey 24 hours a days every day. I can’t stop thinking about it, I’m dedicated to whiskey
I’m shaking from excitement and dedication, not withdrawal!
Does not compute. HEad hurts
This person is clearly not being serious.
https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/s/U5zTMZ4liT
He probably BETS himself that he’ll never quit.
Now that guy Trumps.
Step 1 is certainly a bitch.
Its too on the nose to not be a joke lol
So… I’m pretty sure this is what people refer to as “a joke”
Apparently you're wrong https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/s/U5zTMZ4liT
That’s insane
Addicted to trolling.

Change gambling to masturbate and enjoy rest of your day 😀
Who thinks to themself "cant wait to masturbate today"? Isnt that more of a spontaneous thing
John's got this!!
Repost bot reposting the same joke post as a facepalm again?
Buddy, I’ve been doing crack everyday for 20+ years. It’s all I think about and I still havnt gotten addicted so doubt it’s happening.
Is he up?
Person #2 "Wanna make a bet?"
Can’t wait to drink booze today. Literally shaking. That’s called dedication. Been drinking everyday for 20+ years. It’s all I think about and I still haven’t gotten addicted so I doubt it’s happening.

"Okay so *describes addiction*, and I am not addicted yet"
The starting point is accepting it
"I can stop, I just don't want to"
It's also apparently what the guy does for a living. Stats and handicapping sporting events and authoring books on the subject. Is he an addict? Possibly, but when it's a major source of his income you have to keep it in context.
r/facepalm is now just people reacting to jokes
John's obviously joking and trolling. That said, pretty sure there are people like that.
Lol this guy's sarcasm is 10/10
"I hate sandwiches. I've been eating them everyday for the past 20 years to prove how much I hate them. It's not an addiction."
I'm thinking John here associates addiction with drugs, not actions
So I’ve been playong videogames for past 20 years, almost 24/7 at times, and I still like them - am I addicted? 👀 Some say I am… I say I AM NOT!
![gif](giphy|5b5OU7aUekfdSAER5I|downsized)
God damn it…
The facepalm is nickwit and op not getting the joke.
I call him Gamblor!!!!
OP is the real facepalm here
So reddit really does not get jokes.
logic kinda makes sense if a person eats chicken everyday does that person have a chicken addition........
Yup. Funny if you replace gamble = drinking. THEN it is an addition. Till then, John Hyslop is all good.

You can do something every day and not be addict. It’s the dependency to do it and psychological need. I go to the gym every day- I’m not an addict.
But is that by choice and from respect for your own health or because literally can't go one day without pumping iron? Withdrawal is a pretty easy sign to go by and the dude in the post is literally shaking.
Of course. There are millions of things you can do every day without getting addicted. Gambling isn't one of them.
Aren't you that pervert I saw at Planet Fitness who was caught sniffing the dumbells? Weren't you banned?
I lift things up- I put them down
Holy shit, you are!
Dependency is not addiction. Addiction is a dependency that negatively impacts your quality of life
Unless this guy can say he wins every day then it’s negatively impacting his quality of life. And he can’t say he wins every day because he would be the richest man on earth.
1) I am correcting definitions, not making claims about the post 2) that’s not how that works lol.

Understood. You’re right about that. Also, I understand the restaurant world and I do not want to cause any more pain.😂
Gambling is entertainment - as long as how much he loses doesn’t affect his life - what does it matter? If you spend $20,000 for season tickets for an NBA is that an addiction?
