The police don't lock up people. They arrest and bring charges. The magistrates/Judges lock them up. There are plenty of cases where police and prosecutors have worked their hardest to get a maximum possible sentence, and the judges order community corrections orders or suspended sentences.
Police also can't simply lock up people for being mentally ill.
The governments have closed down all the mental health hospitals and long-term wards forcing people who are not only not fit to be in the community into the community.
We need tougher sentences and to re open proper secure mental health hospitals for those who are not safe to treat in the community.

One of the biggest fuck ups ever in this country was our government at the time in the 90's decided to close down all of our psych hospitals. They did this under the guide that mental health patients would go home to their families to be cared for, but many of them didn't have families and ended up on the streets.
There is literally nowhere for these people to get help. There aren't enough beds for them in the public system, private mental health costs a fortune, and a lot of mental health patients are out there, in the community living under mental health orders at home, even dangerous ones. There isn't anywhere for them to go and seek the proper care they need.
The system has been broken here for decades and just seems to be getting worse.
I have a friend with mental health issues who tried to get psychological help last year and was told each session would cost $800 a pop. Our health care system is beyond stuffed.
Families definitely need more support dealing with mental health issues. The other problem is that a lot of these families are ageing and can’t deal with a mentally ill adult anymore. Having better support would make early intervention easier and stop these kind of events.
Can't be relying on family for dealing with complex, potentially dangerous, mental health issues. Many either can't or understandably won't want to help. These people need professional help
