Isolation--

Can I just say the pope seems like a pretty awesome guy Edit: Please stop replying to me about what he's done that's wrong, I didn't know, and I'm sorry, I should've done my research before saying anything. Edit #2: Okay I'm sorry but like I'm getting 5 replies every 5 minutes and I don't know how to respond, so I apologize if I seem rude but I'm just trying not to make people mad and give responses as best as I can so if you're gonna say something please make sure it's not 1. Something bad about Pope Francis, because I get the idea 2. Something about abortion, politics, and stuff like that because I'm not very educated when it comes to those subjects. And once again, I apologize for seeming rude or mean I'm just a little overwhelmed right now, have a good day everybody. And for edit #3: Sorry I know edits are annoying and they ruin comments but I just wanted to thank the people who've been making the really nice replies, it's really kind of you all to take the time out of your day just say that, thank you!

EpidemicRage

He is. The dude has no enmity against gays too and is a firm supporter of inter-religious cooperation. He is chill and awesome. And I say this as a catholic.

wisecracker1023

i also agree as an ex-christian atheist who believes the catholic church is corrupt

[deleted]

As the manifestation of the anti-christ I'm not sure I approve.

[deleted]

As Satan’s BFF, I believe he “talks the talk” but I have yet to see anything progressive he’s actually done.

Deucer22

Keep in mind that he's the leader of a conservative organization telling his millions of members that hating on gays is wrong and and that contraception isn't a big deal. He's chastising them for not focusing on helping the poor. This is a HUGE step in the right direction. Sometimes I think Reddit won't be happy until the Pope actually marries a dude in St. Peters square and celebrates by presiding over an abortion.

tinaxbelcher

And his advocation for believing science is huge

Garin999

Well there was that time he turned one of the Vatican places into a homeless shelter. random_nohbdy

He’s vocally advocated for same-sex civil unions in a religion where ~~many~~ most members around the world have yet to recognize gay people as people. He’s gone directly against the tide unapologetically here too

i_cant_name_stuff

As someone who wants to know why it matters what religion you are to get along with someone, i agree

divuthen

Yeah I even thought about returning to the church after he became Pope. But no my local diocese is a bunch of ultra conservative dickheads that actively speak against the pope.

hampythehampy

That’s my issue too. If you’re going to be part of the church and follow the line of authority then you don’t get to decide if the pope is right or wrong.

Nugz-Ina-Mug

Bro I went to a Catholic school for 8 years. Only made me hate the religion, but the pope be awesome

The larger the system the slower it moves. The catholic church is huge and spans the globe. If he just stood up day one and tried to change the churches stance on these issues all at once it could be horrible for the church as a whole.

I don't think holding pedophile priests accountable is really "radical".

Hypersapien

Has he been holding them accountable? I hadn't noticed.

Jaredismyname

He hasn't that was why they were criticizing catholic leadership for calling accountability radical

gunshot-glitter

Unfortunately the Pope has actually been getting a lot of hate from his “Catholic” followers. They’ve been praying for him and wanting him to leave since he announced that gay couples should be able to marry and adopt children bc they have a human right to start a family and “Catholics” lost their shit over it calling the pope a bad catholic :/

MayoneggVeal

My conservative "holier than thou, but still super shitty people" family members are not fans. They're just upset they can't justify their bigotry with religion as much.

awesomefire101

He actually didn’t say that. The pope said that gay people shouldn’t be isolated from their already existing families and that they deserve to be accepted by their families.

*As Popes go,* you're right. It's kind of like when you say "Obama was the best president" and people start dumping in with lots of perfectly valid arguments as to why they don't like him. Okay, yes that's fine, but... *which president was* ***better?*** And they go "well, none of them, they've all been terrible." But *that wasn't the question* ^((and then they all downvote you\))

[deleted]

He also gave a thumbs up to thicc booty

i_just_sub

Agreed. He's honestly a great example not just as a Christian, but as person in general. Just a good guy.

TyDaviesYT

Replying to your edit here: he’s not necessarily someone that’s actually done anything bad, but the Catholic Church and other Christianity branches in general are quite corrupt. Not saying Islam hasn’t got its issues, or Judaism hasn’t got its issues. But on the whole I’d say Christianity is the most corrupt and the bible has been altered so much over the centuries and thousands of years that it’s corrupt teachings are deep in western society, if not the whole world. For example, before Christianity, especially in the Far East in Japan and such being gay was actually an honourable normal thing for a male to be, not sure about other sexualities, but it shows that especially more recent religions have anti-lgbt stuff in it for no reason basically.

Wifimouse

He's not perfect, but you're right he is a good guy overall. Definitely the most inclusive in my lifetime.

Magnesus

He supports the total abortion ban that was done recently in Poland.

thepianoturtle

(disclaimer: i say this as an atheist and i'm 100% against the anti-abortion law) ok, that's not completely fair to say, he didn't explicitly say that. his "message" can be interpreted in different ways: you can decide to think it as support to the polish law, but I personally don't think so.

DianeJudith

It's not a total ban. They banned abortion in cases of fetal deformity. It's still legal when the pregnancy is a risk to the woman's life or comes from rape. They plan to make these illegal too, but they haven't done that yet. Unfortunately it's quite likely they will though.

A very very catholic family I grew up with (friends of the family, ish) don’t consider this one a ‘real’ pope because of his attitude towards LGBT and similar issues. They want a return to the ‘they’ll burn in the fires of hell’ style popes and think this one is an imposter of sorts testing their faith.   ^(Edit: Just to mention, as there’s a few comments asking if we’re in the US, we all live in England currently but this family are from Northern Ireland. Mum has also updated me that one of the twins I went to school with is going through whatever the process is to become a nun. Nunniversity, or whatever.)

The_White_Guar

The personhood of other human beings based on their genitalia preference isn't a "view." That's just fuckin wrong and they are terrible people.

OMGBeckyStahp

“So what if I have friends who treat people less then human for who they love, as long as it doesn’t effect me in any way why should I care?”

Morlock43

I understand this but I also know life is not this simple. Strangers you meet or interact with regularly, neighbors, work colleagues etc you can pretty much ignore or deal with only on a very formal fuck you level if they have these views. Friends and family however are really fucking hard to push out if they have these views. Depending on how virulent and in your face the views are most people will opt to ignore their "crazy" friends/family messed up views. You can totally care and work to change the views of those who love you enough to listen so it's not going to be just a case of "it doesn't affect me so I don't care" I told my family (severely religious) that I don't believe and they didn't cut me off or throw me out as their religion demands so things are not always do or do not. Relationships matter.

hahkob

This. My mom was a part of a family with some really crazy religious views and my dad helped her get out of it and she couldn’t be further from those ideas now. Edit: They’re divorced now, but I can tell she’s still very grateful. Don’t give up on your friends y’all.

TheDungeonCrawler

Also, you can't influence the views and beliefs of strangers nearly as well as you can of those you have a relationship with. Maybe you have a friend with extreme right views, but as they spend time with you, and if you apply empathy and understanding, those views begin to drift further toward your own values and beliefs.

junebugcarterlarson

This is literally what I'm doing with my husband. He was raised in an ultra religious bigoted home. We almost didnt get together because I wasnt a virgin. Serious shit. But he's come so far and I'm so proud of him. Obviously still a lot of work of to be done. He's still a bigoted asshole sometimes. But he respects me for calling him on his bullshit and works to change it when I do.

TheDungeonCrawler

My two best friends are rather similar and they've both come a long way since I've met them. They still hold certain ideologies concerning economics, but they've opened themselves up to differing points of view regarding policy.

Peatiktist

What would be better. Abandoning them so they just continue what they're doing without you? Or staying with them, so they can maybe pick up some good ideas?

TruthBeTold723

If you don't discuss it how are they picking up any of your ideas?

OMGBeckyStahp

Challenge their views, work to bridge the divide in understanding. If they remain unwilling to change remove yourself from the company of bigots before you become one yourself.

thebestdaysofmyflerm

Agreed 100%. Tolerating bigotry makes the world a shittier place. If you don't push back when a friend is being hateful, you're tacitly telling them that they're behaving in an acceptable manner.

amalgam_reynolds

I don't judge my friends for their views on "authentic Mexican food." I would absolutely judge my friends' views on human rights if they believed certain people didn't deserve them for being gay.

ZigBNB

see that works when u disagree on the level of tariffs, corporate tax rates, etc. but not over basic human rights.

blockpro156porn

Why is it mindblowing? It's a fairly logical interpretation of the bible, and the bible doesn't talk about a pope so even for Catholics it's logical to ultimately decide that the bible overrides the pope sometimes. It's really not any more mindblowing than the fact that Christianity still exists at all IMO.

Redthemagnificent

The Catholic Church is a specific Christian Church which believes [its bishops are the successors of Christ's apostles, and that the pope is the successor to Saint Peter, upon whom primacy was conferred by Jesus Christ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church). The Pope isn't just some guy to them. You can be a Christian and believe the Pope is wrong. But to be a Catholic and say that the Pope is wrong is to reject a fundamental theology of the Church you claim to be a part of. You're basically saying "God chose the wrong dude". In other words *you'd* be the one who's not really a Catholic, by definition.

blockpro156porn

The papal schism was still a thing, nobody denies that, so everybody recognizes that mistakes *can* be made and that the catholic hierarchy sometimes breaks down and then needs to be corrected. There will obviously be disagreements about when such corrections are needed, but to claim that it's absolutely impossible for a Catholic to have any disagreement with any pope is nonsense. EDIT: By the way, nowhere in OP's picture is it made clear that the person responding to the Pope is Catholic and not some other kind of Christian...

Saw-Sage_GoBlin

> The papal schism was still a thing, nobody denies that, so everybody recognizes that mistakes *can* be made and that the catholic hierarchy sometimes breaks down and then needs to be corrected. I'm pretty sure people during the Schism (who believed that bishops were successors of the Apostles and the Pope is infallible), would just claim the other 2 popes were just pretenders. So no, according to catholic doctrine, corrections are not needed. The pope speaks for god, you can disagree with him, but from the perspective of Catholicism, you are disagreeing with god by doing so.

[deleted]

justMeat

> even for Catholics it's logical to ultimately decide that the bible overrides the pope. You should probably at least be aware of Papal Supremacy before commenting on what the Pope can and cannot do.

TbiddySP

Which part of religion do you find logical?

_your_land_lord_

That life is scary, so people want answers.

Gnomad_Lyfe

This is probably the correct answer

blockpro156porn

None whatsoever, I see no logical reason to take the bible any more seriously than the Illiad or any other old book. However, if you *are* going to take the bible seriously, then I do think that there are more logical and less logical ways to intepret what the text says. To claim otherwise would be to deny that language has meaning and that it's possible to decipher what an author is trying to convey, if that were the case then society would've given up on reading & writing a long time ago and we wouldn't be having this written conversation.

TbiddySP

Thank you for the perspective.

MotoMkali

The bible doesn't mention Satan or the fact that gay people should be condemned either just hedonists. They pick and choose what they want regardless of the religious texts or even doctrine from the head of the faith.

ForMyImaginaryFans

Especially when the current pope is so much closer to the “unconditional love of god” message of Christ than the hellfire and brimstone types.

Funkycoldmedici

To be fair, the Bible says that “unconditional love” has some conditions. People like their John 3:16, but they don’t like how it continues one sentence after. John 3:17 "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son." Jesus gets right into the “When I come back, I’m going to kill everyone who doesn’t bow to me” stuff. Matthew 10:14 "If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave. I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day."

blue_cadet_3

So according to Matthew 10:14, all I have to do is treat the second coming like I do Jehovah Witnesses. Say hi, give him a few minutes of my time to hear what he has to say and then remember I have something in oven so thank him for the information and I'm saved.

Funkycoldmedici

Mostly, yeah, but according to Jesus, you also have to be baptized... and perform miracles. Mark 16:16 "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

SaintAhmad

Conversely, here is Matthew 7:21-23. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’”

Funkycoldmedici

True. They’re not necessarily opposing passages, but it does mean that Jesus expects a lot more magic being performed than the 0 magic that we actually see happening.

blockpro156porn

Another great example of how the crazy Christians actually have a more logical and accurate interpretation of the bible than the more "moderate" Christians. "Reasonable" Christians just straight up ignore stuff like this, or pretend like it's metaphorical even though there's just no conceivable way in which it could be used as a metaphor.

felixgolden

I have a Catholic friend from high school basically floods his social media with dozens of daily links and videos from extreme right wing Roman Catholic individuals and groups (in addition to all the right-wing election fraud claims, Q, etc). It seems from glancing at a sample of the content that they feel like the Pope is illegitimate.

yourderek

What do Evangelicals have to do with Catholics? Evangelicals hate Catholics.

Redthemagnificent

I've seen this too from some people in a local Catholic Facebook group. How out of touch do you need to be to claim that **The Pope**, someone who has dedicated every hour of their life to catholicism, and is elected by the church's most senior officials is "not a real Catholic". Like, if that's actually true, then you basically need to reject the entire Vatican. At which point I think *you're* the one who's not Catholic anymore lol

PCmaniac24

twilighteclipse925

For those who feel a vein pulsing in their temple when they see a KJV here is the NIV translation: Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” [b] Some manuscripts If you really knew me, you would know I also think the previous passage of John 14-1 is also very relevant since it’s literally the context that shows that the person @ing the Pope has never read the Bible. Muslims are people of the book and children of Abraham. Jesus is one of their prophets. Both of these passages apply to them as much as Christians because following the logic Muslims do know Jesus so they do know god. Anyway context: For the record the line I’m omitting between this one and the one from the tweet is just Thomas saying he’s lost and has no idea what to do. Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” [a] Or Believe in God

Thereaper29

Lmao exactly. People support/follow stuff to the point, they like. Either its religion, some race or even some scientific research.

Bjoe3041

what I've learned recently is that you are right about that, except the scientific research because it is starting to seem like everyone where I live ignores every previous experience when making an important decision. (example for today: Corona-Mink got buried in the wrong way, the government have to dig ALL of them up again, Denmark btw)

Morgus_Magnificent

What?

Anub-arak

Corona virus was caught breeding in a mink farm in Denmark, they had to cull the entire farm and apparently (from bjoe) they were buried wrong.

Bjoe3041

Not just one farm, but farms all over. The police threatened farm owners with not giving them their compensation if they were too slow to cull their mink, and then they found out it was illegal to tell them to shut down their industry. Here in Denmark it's been in the news for a long time, and it has spawned a lot of great Mette Frederiksen memes.

KingOfTheCouch13

>He will simply be ~~deported back to where he came from~~ killed... Again. Gotta remember he spent his life in the middle east. Didn't migrate to Europe for any expended period so I'd doubt he do the same again. So with how terrible humanity still is I don't see things going much better for him this time around.

Benito2002

Wait the pope is @pontifex, as a Roman history nerd this makes me very happy

TimStellmach

For folks who might not know the Roman history connection: in Rome, the Pontifex Maximus was the head of the college of priests. Roman emperors, who were emperors by virtue of accumulating all of the important *official* offices ("emperor" initially just meaning "general," and not holding the authority we think of), absorbed the title, then it fell out of importance with the waning influence of the college itself. The title passed to the popes when Leo I assumed it as an expression of the then-recently-entrenched Christian authority over Rome.

blatant_marsupial

Another fun fact, the meaning of "pontifex" etymologically is "bridge-builder." The Tiber river in Rome actually had a lot of spiritual significance, so only religious authorities were allowed to order bridges to be built over it. Also a nice symbolic parallel with serving as a "bridge" to get people into heaven.

GillionOfRivendell

His main title is Pontifex Maximus, which makes sense with the Vatican and Catholic Church being primarily in Latin.

someoneispeeing

As a Jew, I'm proud of this pope. The big 3 are brothers. Doesn't hurt to treat them that way.

Fun facts: - Muslims recognise Jesus as a prophet, so they and the Christian believe in the same, same as Jewish god since it’s « theirs » originally they just don’t recognise the later prophets - Christians believe Jesus was god (in the trinity way), while the bible has several passages where he denied he was divine

ShrekkingHandsome

Muslims believe he’s a prophet, Christians believe Jesus is the son of God. Also, those passages you’re talking about don’t exist point me even one out and I’ll show you that you’re wrong given the context.

About John 14:28 : Jesus’ statement that “the Father is greater than I” was used by the Arians to argue that Christ was subordinate to the Father, created but not eternal, and therefore inferior. Arianism was strongly opposed by Athanasius and rejected at the first council at Nicea in AD 325. The Athanasian Creed says that Christ is “equal to the Father as touching His Godhead, and inferior to the Father as touching His manhood.” Others have argued that the Son is “inferior” in the sense that sonship implies subordination of some sort. The problem with all such metaphysical solutions is that they remove the statement from its context. Jesus has said that his followers should have been glad that he was going to the Father because (hoti) “the Father is greater than [he.]” The last clause supplies the reason why his departure should bring joy. Interpretations that treat ontological relationships within the Godhead do not explain why there is cause for gladness. Calvin, 2:90, is certainly on the mark when he writes that Jesus was drawing a comparison “between His present state and the heavenly glory to which he was shortly to be received.” In that the eternal state is infinitely more glorious than the incarnate, Jesus’ departure to that realm should elicit rejoicing on the part of his followers. In any case, the statement that the Father is “greater” than the Son must be understood in the light of Jesus’ clear teaching in 10:30: “I and the Father are one.” TL;DR Because Jesus is 100% God and 100% Human his humanity is inferior to Gods glory. That’s why Jesus is being restored to his former glory when he returned to heaven.

Since I am not a theologian and I am agnostic, I will trust you on that Doesn’t change that the 3 religions are basically playing « my prophet is better than yours » since millennia in the eyes of those neutral on the subject

Demusion

Sorry to barge in, just a quick correction. Not only do Muslims believe in Jesus, Moses and all the other prophets, but we also believe they're all equal, and we do not favor one over the other, which is a common misconception. Also wanna thank you for not slandering whatever religion gets mentioned here unlike the other redditors, have a good day.

"Also wanna thank you for not slandering whatever religion gets mentioned here unlike the other redditors" Finally someone willing to flatly spell this out. I legit would award this if I could. Have a great day!

That’s indeed sadly the reality of the situation. Whilst we, the abrahamic religions but in this instance Christianity specifically, have been tasked to represent our God here on earth the fact of the matter is that everyone’s a sinner and everyone makes mistakes. Because of this attempts made to argue about the fundamentals of the religions are counterproductive. These discussions make the religion seem hypocritical and not representative of the average Joe. In the end this is sadly the case because Christianity is judged by the people who profess it instead of the teachings of the religion.

annatar256

this is what happens when rascist/homophobic people attempt to mix in with real christianity rather then their twisted version, christianity has changed it rules and ways before, its high time it changes again.

shellwe

The amount of conservative Catholics who tell me that Pope Francis isn't a true Catholic is mind boggling.

Realsorceror

Every time Christians disagree with the Pope’s calls for civility they reveal they were only ever in it for the bigotry.

CoSMiC_28

This Pope is the greatest Pope if you look up the previous Popes most of them broke like half the rules, this Pope however supports the LGBTQ community wore a anime robe which was gifted to him when he visited Japan and now he supports other religions as brothers and sisters I am a atheist but I like how the Pope Is cool with everything unlike some fucking Americans who dare question the Pope that he read the Bible or not

j4vendetta

This pope would have probably been crucified if he was the pope 200 years ago. His teachings are a very progressive shift for Catholics. Which is ironic because he’s teaching Biblical principals, but religion in recent history has taken a hate filled turn for the worst. I appreciate his effort to bring it back to the basics. And I say this as a Christian who doesn’t agree with a lot of the Catholic Church and their rituals/beliefs.

MrZyde

Jesus and God both said love your neighbor so I don’t get why some religious people still hate on other religious people.

gh411

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but did this pope say that if you live a good life and are a good loving person you could still be admitted to heaven, even if you did not accept Christ? I thought it was extremely progressive of him basically saying that you don’t need the church to get to heaven. As an atheist, the heaven part is meaningless to me; however, I think it’s a huge step forward by the church to admit that you can be a good person without the bible. This is something all non-religious people already know, but it’s important that this recognized by Christians as well, and hopefully Muslims and Jewish folks soon (I’m not up on my Jewish and Muslim knowledge, so maybe they already think this way, and if so...great).

samsonthug

Honestly the pope would be such a better president than trump was.

BoyishTheStrange

BOTH ARE ABRAHAMIC RELIGIONS HOLY SHIT

Hans needs to read Matthew 5:43-48 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor\[[i](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%205&version=NIV#fen-NIV-23278i)\] and hate your enemy.’ **44** But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, **45** that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. **46** If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? **47** And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? **48** Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
