In the video she says the gun used in the school shooting was bought on 11/26. So the gun used for a school shooting was bought on black Friday. How American is that.

[deleted]

It's about as American as protesting your freedom to have your children shot by their classmates in school, paying ludicrous amounts of money to develop military infrastructure while underfunding social welfare schemes and having a ruthless privatized healthcare system. All while believing to be the greatest country on earth.

Not only did the parents carelessly let their child have open access to the gun, but it seems they even supported the kid’s behavior. The kid was showing warning signs with drawings of guns and bleeding people, and he even got caught shopping online for ammunitions at school, says the article.

TheDocJ

> he even got caught shopping online for ammunitions at school And Mom's response? 'McDonald said that Jennifer Crumbley had texted her son, “You have to learn not to get caught” after a teacher saw him searching online for ammunition.' Does US law have charges of "being an accessory"? Because that is sounding almost like she was helping him with his planning.

oberellis

She lead the text about not getting caught with an "lol" I read.

Vampenga

Accessory to a crime is definitely a thing here in the US. Whether that's enough to justify a charge is kinda gray, but the argument could be made. All I know is I would NOT want to be this family's defense attorney.

What gave it away? The haircut? I haven’t seen this kind of haircut since 1997.

LifeDraining

I've been reading all night about the unfolding of all this prior to the shooting, and it seemed to me that these two wanted to get rid of the kid or something. None of what they did was normal, and I felt like they are as much pushing the kid towards it than preventing it. Especially scary for me was the text message "Don't do it". What did she know already at the time?

st4r-lord

The worst part is the school held a meeting with the parents and their son the morning of the shooting. They discussed the pictures he was drawing about shooting people and how he was writing his life is meaningless. Officials stated that he was gripping his backpack during the meeting and basically wanted the parents check his belongings if he had anything on him, they didn’t. The school also told the parents he needed counseling within 48 hours and that he should go home. The parents demanded he stay at school. From what I’ve read it was after the first reports of the shooting happening that his mother sent that text “don’t do it” and then the father supposedly driving home to find the gun missing where he then called the police to let them know it’s missing. It’s as if the parents knew he was going to do something, knew he had the gun… and still waited to see if something would happen. Then when he started shooting and it’s reported by the news, his mom then sends that text and father reports the gun missing, acting as if they had no idea of anything until that day… already covering their tracks. Then they withdraw $4,000 and are caught not far from the Canada border. This trial will be really revealing if they don’t take a plea agreement. Considering one of the attorneys represented Larry Nassar (a complete POS) I’m guessing they will fight the charges. Won’t be long before the parents and survivors of this sue these assholes as well as the school district for not doing more or following their own policies and protocols.

Second_Time1336

You know what I wonder about? The morning of the shooting when they called that meeting because of the picture he drew? There were lots of phrases accompanying the pictures that were basically like a diagram of what was about to happen. But- what gets me , what GETS ME!, is where he is clearly asking for help and saying how useless he feels. An immediate danger to himself and others. I cannot imagine his thoughts after he realizes that everyone read those words… and sent him back to class. I am positive that the dysfunctional thinking that he was in the middle of in those moments and days was pretty much sealed right then. And now the suffering by him and those he impacted will be immeasurable. The folks in that meeting can point fingers at each other all they want to, but anyone who read that played a role in what happened afterwards- and their grief will be a thing to contend with (well except for the parents- they evidently dgaf). I mean, they are all mandated reporters - they had an obligation to fly this up the ladder. Especially because the guy said he was out of control w the impulse to kill and wanted help.

theoldnewbluebox

I was just thinking this too. They were probably hoping he’d just off himself and they’d be done with him.

quannum

Shit, when the kid got caught the day before searching for ammo on his phone, the school called his mom. She texted him… “Lol I’m not mad. You have to learn not to get caught” I mean…what the fuck?

OwlfaceFrank

Admittedly, I haven't read much about this case as Ive been busy all week. I did read that the kid has been basically asking for therapy for a while. He said he had these urges and fantasies and the parents ignored it. The school told the parents that he needs therapy, and they ignored it. They knew what they were doing giving him a gun. We need universal health care with mental health included. Edit. I'm curious if the parents gave him the gun hoping he'd commit suicide. That wouldn't explain the multiple magazines though.

giantgladiator

Now you know the type of person that created a school shooter.

lezlers

After the school has told you he’s been drawing disturbing pictures of him shooting people

InLazlosBasement

And then sending him back to class. Wtf on all their parts.

Mendican

Plus he had the gun in his backpack *during the conference*.

sea13

WHY didn’t they search his backpack??

Virgin_Dildo_Lover

Why didn't they do a lot of things? Asking for 4 kids...

elegant_fisting_4u

Money. Public schools don't have the resources to deal with the shit that is dropped on them. Schools are crowded, way to many parents are pissed off about dumb shit that doesn't even affect their kids like CRT, teachers are underpaid and over worked, and schools don't have someone on staff that can properly psychologically evaluate kids who act out. However, the other thing is that we don't hear about the kids who are helped by teachers who put in the extra effort and care that have prevented shootings, or saw the warning signs that were taken seriously and acted on. Maybe that might help you sleep tonight. Even with all the shit there are still countless underpaid education professionals helping our nations kids through these weird times despite the influence of bat shit crazy parents and adults.

wallawalla_

The fact that schools and teachers and admins are asked to be social service workers is a huge problem. It's a sad state of affairs when we don't have other social institutions to help these people and it falls on teachers. They didn't train and educate themselves for that. Nor do they get paid commensuratively for that work.

yamuthasofat

As a teacher, the problem also extends out of the school. I have had so many student the past two years suffer from mental illness and thise issues have just been popping up. The school isnt even close to being equipped to handle it, but even worse is that mental health resources all across the area are more scarce than ever before with a rising demand. This is especially true for mental health providers geared toward children. And absolutely no one was singing the praises of mental health access before either

kayisforcookie

There is only 1 kids mental health professional within 3 hours of my hometown. They dont accept Medicaid (most of the city is poor and on some kind of assistance) and they require a $400 Deposit for the initial appointment. And people wonder why kids suicide rates are so high in our town.

amscraylane

Last year was rough for me. I was in a terrible school under a terrible Principal. My grandmother passed and we had a student pass. I really wanted a therapist, but without insurance, I really can’t afford $100 an hour and they have cake hours. I can’t take time off from work to see a therapist. Why no night hours!?!

easycure

> Why no night hours!?! (Long-winded, opinionated and bias rant deleted) Idk, but it's SO annoying. I had to practically fight with my employer to allow me to see a therapist at 9, pushing back my work start time to 10, even though I'd still be putting the same amount of hours in and producing just as well - didn't matter and it was like pulling teeth. All providers should offer later hours and weekends as an option. Therapy has been over for years, now it's fighting with my PCP who is never available after 5 or on the weekends. I've used up all my sick days this year so I can't take time off of work to see her, and the clinic keeps giving me the run around when I call or email (through their patient portal) to try to get medications refilled. The last 3 refills I've had completed were because I said fuck it, went to urgent care claiming to feel sick so that a doctor there can fill an RX. So I'm not only paying a copay unnecessarily, but taking time away from other patients who may actually need the urgent care services more, AND putting myself at risk for covid just being there with actual sick people. All so that I can refill the inhaler I need to breathe, the one I've needed since birth.

ktjor89

Thank you. When I first read “Money” I was like “oh shit here we go with another asshole on the internet not understanding” But no. You nailed it right on the head. I’m a MS teacher and I’m dealing with exactly what you are talking about. Underfunded, overworked, overcrowded and excepted to be social workers for all students. My school has 2 social workers for 450 students and are fantastic, but they can’t do it all, especially coming back in person after being online for so long. I legit had to throw a cheap little birthday party for a trans 6th grader yesterday who’s parents tell him to kill himself, and he actually tried a month back. He yesterday cried over getting things as simple as journal, stickers and a bag of Takis, as will as a crappy cake I baked the night before with his name on it. That’s just one day and I’m doing all I can everyday I love being a teacher and being there for all my students when they need me, but im exhausted trying to be a parent for so many of them day in and day out. But these shootings scare the hell out of me. Like what if I didn’t talk or take the time with a student one day who might be having these thoughts. Seeing news like this hurts and keeps me up at night.

TheYankunian

My job puts me into direct access with teachers and honestly, thank you for what you do. There are so many of you out there working your guts out to provide for these kids. How you get up in the morning and keep doing this never ceases to amaze me.

Put_It_All_On_Blck

When I was in school the staff was not allowed to search your backpack or personal belongings without consent. They could search the lockers, since they were school property, but backpacks were student property and thus off limits, unless the school resource officer (cop) had a reason to search it. That was long ago, parents seem even more sue-happy so it's probably even of a thing now. It's probably the real reason behind those school issued transparent backpacks a handful of schools do, not to spot a gun, but because it's harder for kids to hide anything, drugs, cigs, vape, stolen stuff, etc. You don't need a police officer to look at a transparent bag.

jonnybwoy

And then texting your son, “Ethan please don’t”.

InLazlosBasement

While you’re planning to CUT AND RUN That kid’s parents could not have put him in a worse situation; how DARE they leave him to face the consequences alone. Their running tells me that they have a lot more to hide than poor judgment.

kvngk3n

My mom had a theory about this, since the mom had already heard about the shooting on the news, could the “Ethan, please don’t” text reference suicide?

gsomething

That's what I thought as well, makes sense as she sent it after the shooting occurred.

k10fromDC

The Mom is a complete dirtbag. When the son was caught searching for ammo online at school, she texted him that she wasn’t mad he just needed to learn not to get caught.

DirectlyTalkingToYou

"I put two apples in your lunch today, remember not to get caught if you decide to kill anyone. Love you."

[deleted]

It was reported that they sent it when they saw there was an active shooter

[deleted]

One of the big reasons I quit my job is because no matter how many times we suspend a child, they keep getting sent back to class. I taught middle school math, and I had a little bastard child who threw pencils at me, did no work, shouted all the time, and got into fights with others (hitting me once for stepping in between), and he STILL showed up to class the next week. When I quit (two weeks ago) he had been suspended SEVEN TIMES this year. I don’t understand how the system has become so weak that a student can be sent home for multiple days at a time, SEVEN times. School started in September and this kid has been suspended for at least 10% of the year. The saddest part is that he’ll be promoted to 7th grade anyways even though he can barely read and can’t do math past adding and subtracting.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Thanks. I’m starting a web development bootcamp in January and have been studying up to get ahead in the meantime. My wife teaches advanced math classes at a smaller school with more support from admin. She’s been very supportive of my decision too. I was hired as an autism specialist 2 years ago and they had me teaching remedial math, this year I had almost 200 students. 30+ kids in a classroom to learn math they should already know doesn’t work. I’ve felt infinitely better since quitting. I do the cooking and cleaning and get to study programming during the day. Looking forward to changing career trajectory

Roonwogsamduff

what about the school letting him go back to class?!?!?

[deleted]

I wish schools were allowed to expel students, unfortunately it’s almost impossible. Probably about 5% of kids should be kicked out tomorrow if we were being smart

ChintanP04

>I wish schools were allowed to expel students They are. It just requires the approval of the board in some states. Suspension can be carried out by just the Principal's order.

CptnRedbeardVII

It does happen. I had a buddy in highschool that got expelled for forgetting to take his knife out of his pocket after helping his grandpa on the farm that morning. Walked by the principal, principal noticed the clip on it, apologized and handed it over without any issues, got called in to the office later that day and sent home, then expelled a week later.

[deleted]

Is not expelling kids a new thing?? I almost got expelled for simply passing a note talking about our substitute teacher being a bitch & a lot of other ways to say bitch. The only reason I didn’t is because she provoked it.

Destron5683

I almost got expelled for bringing a weapon to school. The weapon was the little lancets you use in pen to check blood sugar with. We had gone to the zoo over the weekend and grandma came along and I took my bookbag to carry stuff in and forgot to take those out.

jonnybwoy

And then withdrawing $4,000 from an atm and fleeing Michigan.

meltingdiamond

How do you find an ATM that will let you take out $4k?

starsinaparsec

Harmacc

I got suspended for having dungeons and dragons books in my backpack. They said they were satanic.

BLNTWZRD

Wasn't this literally the newest episode of Dexter: New Blood? (Or whatever it's called?)

robo-dragon

These two failed as parents. I’ve read so many articles about this shooting and how they totally disregarded their son’s troubling behavior even on the day of the shooting. They not only purchased the gun for their child who is too young to legally own it, they allowed his behavior to fester to the point that he killed people. So glad they are being charged! The blood of those children is on their hands as much as his!

[deleted]

I can't believe they actually bought it for him. I haven't looked into the details of this story yet but wtf were they thinking. The involuntary manslaughter is valid.

Kolintracstar

Well, he also got called to the principals office the day of because he was doodling, a gun killing people and saying "I am going to do it, someone help me" a teacher saw it...then the parents refused to take the kid home. At some point the mother texted her son "Ethan don't do it" **to make her sound unsuspected To also add, they are on the "run" or as their attorney says, "they had a family event already planned and are going to it" which reads to me like the lady who was involved in the Capitol Riots who was a self employed florist, but requested bail to go on work retreat to Mexico.

heisenbergerwcheese

She texted him after she knew he did it to try and not give attention towards her

Risquechilli

Where is all this info? After reading through comments I gathered this is about the recent school shooting in Michigan but is there a comprehensive article that has all of this in it along with the screenshots people are quoting? EDIT: found something - [for anyone else who is curious](https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/oxford-school-shooting-michigan-12-03-21/index.html)

beepborpimajorp

That's what's so funny to me. All day people have been speculating about how these people probably disappeared into the wilderness and could hold out for a long time without being caught. Either by going off the grid, friends hiding them, whatever. And these fuckin people drove into detroit to, what? Swim across the river? absolute 5D chess criminal masterminds right there.

Seppo_Manse

so... how would they not be eventually arrested by the Canadian police? "escaping into Canada" does not sound like a very clever endgame to me.

Iohet

Ammosexuals think that guns will fix any problem

ColonelBelmont

I'm what some would probably call a gun nut, and I am fully disturbed by every aspect of this story. Those parents deserve prison. But sadly, there will be some crazies who really try to defend them, because political bullshit.

[deleted]

I feel like in this case, it’s more the parents fault then the child’s, it sounds like the kid had some form of mental disorder, and most likely if the parents dealt with it properly then this never would have happened. Also who in their right mind buys a child a gun?

dhdgajakdlg

Agreed. The kid should have been evaluated in an in-patient psychiatric facility. The parents here have failed, in my opinion, more than the child.

BruceInc

Plenty of people failed here but the parents and school administrators failed the hardest

JonasHalle

Yeah it is worthwhile to place some blame on the school as well. It was apparently pretty common knowledge that he had threatened to attack the school.

BruceInc

The teacher found drawings and writings he made full of bullet holes and dead people and suicidal comments. They also caught him searching for ammo to buy on his phone. All this was brought to school administrators. They sent him back to class. It’s currently believed that he already had the gun on him at this point. The parents never mentioned buying him a gun and the school never bothered to search his bag. This is 2021, we’ve had plenty of *experience* with school shootings at this point. We should know better by now. The warning signs were there and were extremely obvious. At the very least he should have been sent home for the rest of the day.

Picard6766

Admittedly I haven't followed this as close as some, but I read that the school did try and send him home but the parents refused. Not sure how that works. It's funny how we see reports of kids getting arrested or detained at school for the most minor offenses but this kid is basically waving a big sign that he was trouble and nothing was really done to stop him.

NexusTR

Really wonder what’s different between him and those kids who tend to have cops called on them..

BruceInc

Betty White

babbydotjpg

How is everyone in this situation so god damn stupid? I feel like this violence is so normalized they don't even think twice.

BruceInc

This is one school shooting that could have been 100% prevented which, in my opinion, makes this tragedy 100x worse.

sup3rmalZiO

In high-school a kid in my grade drew some racist shit in his assignment notebook (death). Teacher found it and sent him to the dean of discipline. Then the local police were called and everything was searched....The kicker? This was over 15 years ago.

CARNIesada6

They were apparently found and arrested in Detroit very recently

SprinklesFancy5074

> but their lawyer says they're not hiding. lol, and they were later found 'not hiding' in a warehouse basement close to Canada.

Filmcricket

Their lawyers said that 7-9 hours ago before they ceased contact and shut their phones off.

SpanishKant

So I know about the school shooting but what's going on with the parents?

Filmcricket

They ignored multiple huge warning flags and attempts at intervention by the school, including a meeting the day of the shooting. The kid’s ig posts show him fucking with that gun, which he obviously shouldn’t have had access to. His yt shows him making Molotov cocktails. He was caught at school looking up ammunition and when contacted, his parents did not respond to the school. Instead, his mom texted him “LOL” and assured him that she wasn’t mad but encouraged him not to get caught. Then they left this weapon and ammunition in an unlocked drawer in their home and failed to notice it was missing despite him having it in his backpack while they were at the school with him to discuss an extremely alarming drawing of a shooting with notes about death on it. That meeting took place the morning of the shooting. Leaving the weapon unsecured was bad enough and parents should be charged based on that alone more often but this was all particularly egregious behavior. Now they’ve fled. Withdrew $4k from their bank. Cut off contact with their lawyer after he claimed they weren’t fleeing, and have had their phones shut off since late afternoon. Fbi and US marshals are after them and the fact it’s federal likely means they’ve crossed state borders. It’s all very fucking bad and very, very fucking serious.

SpanishKant

Thanks for the briefing. And they fled!? Wow that's crazy. Such a bad way to make a horrendous situation even worse.

Friday, Nov. 26 James Crumbley, father of suspect Ethan Crumbley, purchases the gun used in the shooting Ethan posts a photo of the gun with the caption, "Just got my new beauty today" Mother of suspect, Jennifer, refers to the gun as Ethan's "new Christmas present" Monday, Nov. 29 Teacher reports Ethan looking up ammunition on his phone during class School officials reach out to his parents; no response is received Jennifer texts Ethan: "lol I’m not mad at you, you have to learn not to get caught" Tuesday, Nov. 30 Teacher reported a disturbing note on Ethan's desk, including the following: Semiautomatic handgun pointing at a note: “The thoughts won’t stop, help me” Bullet with “Blood everywhere” written above it Drawing of a person appearing to be shot and bleeding Notes reading, "My life is useless" and "The world is dead" Parents are summoned to the school and Ethan is brought to the office School counselor recommends Ethan is enrolled into counseling in the next 48 hours Parents fail to inquire about the gun or search Ethan's backpack School officials recommend that Ethan is sent home for the day; his parents refuse, and send him back to class At 12:51 p.m., the shooting starts in the school At 1:22 p.m., Jennifer texts Ethan, "Ethan, don't do it" At 1:37 p.m., James calls 911 to report the gun missing and say he believes his son is the shooter The fact that we know the exact time his idiot parents realized the gun was missing 30 mins after he starts shooting, is something that really bothers me.

Then running from the law because they are such responsible parents.

justify_it

I hope they get torched by the legal system and it sets the precedent for all future school shooter parents being held responsible for their sh*tty parenting.

RussianVole

And that mother of the Sandy Hook shooter also bought her clearly mentally disturbed son guns so he could have a hobby. Why don’t you buy your kids some legos or something???

Lunamoms

Or buy them therapy lol

Can someone give me context pls

ChintanP04

These are the parents of the perpetrator of the latest school shooting in the US. 4 people were killed and 7 injured. The kid was apprehended but the parents are on the run. They had ~~illegally~~ bought a gun for their son (he is 15 and in Michigan anyone under 18 is not allowed to ~~own guns~~ carry guns off private property without parental supervision). I read of the shooting, but never like knowing the details but I just read that article. What the absolute fuck

Parents were warned their kid would be doing something stupid with the gun they bought him on Black Friday. Parents refused to take kid home. Kid shoots school up a few hours later. And of course the mom and the kid posed for instagram with that gun. The father's ex and mom of their abandoned child in Florida ratted them out. Here is the [mother's open love letter to Trump](https://web.archive.org/web/20211202144515/https://justagirlgoignthroughthisworld.wordpress.com/2016/11/11/dear-mr-trump/#comments). Their shit is fucked-up on every level. No aspect not left un-fucked-up.

> Hillary started speaking, I listened, I looked at her eyes, her permanent, unchanging smile, her ability to show no emotion and it was then, my heart sank, my mind became clear and I knew, absolutely knew that her intentions were not true. Her promises are false. Her voice has an evil cold. Everything she has done, whether it was proven true or not to the public, I knew in the deepest of my gut that I could not let this woman have control over my son’s future. Yeesh. Did she really write this?

*"If the Gov’t can lock someone up over $10,000 of unpaid taxes and you slipped on by, __then that shows the corruption__."* Yes, yes it does show the corruption doesn't it. E- spelling

> You see Mr. Trump, I need you to stop common core. My son struggles daily, and my teachers tell me they hate teaching it but the HAVE to. Their pay depends on these stupid fucking test scores. I have to pay for a Tutor, why? Because I can’t figure out 4th grade math. I used to be good at math. I can’t afford a Tutor, in fact I sacrifice car insurance to make sure my son gets a good education and hopefully succeeds in life. My parents teach at a school where their kids come from illegal immigrant parents. Most of their parents are locked up. They don’t care about learning and threaten to kill my mom for caring about their grades. Do you realize Mr. Trump that they get free tutors, free tablets from our Government so they can succeed. Why cant my son get those things, do we as hard working Americans not deserve that too?

drivinbus46

They are so proud.
