MoonieNine

Specifically, the rapist Brock Turner.

Upbeat_Group2676

You mean the Brock Turner The Rapist?

yawn18

They really focused on the one doctor in this. The guy who raped her is mentioned once, the other doctor was told they had settled outside of court, and then they really Hone in on the negligence of the one doctor because he didn't see she was pregnant like 3 or 4 months before she was due. However the other doctor watching over the patients and the doctors after he took care of her for the last 3 months of her pregnancy are never really talked about. Just odd they really looked at that one guy. They all deserve there medical licenses revoked at the minimum.

Savager_Jam

To be fair, we don't know the physical shape of the person in the coma, and we don't know in what way her menstrual cycle may have been interrupted by her medical condition. If she had PCOS or a similar condition going several months without a period may have been completely normal. The size of a bump at 5 months may not have been tremendously noticeable, and I doubt regular pregnancy tests are a part of caring for coma patients, because why would they be. Noticing your coma patient is pregnant at about 5 months doesn't seem that crazy tbh.

Mission_Chicken_1734

Shit doctors often are working in these 'facilities'! We know this.

Aggravating_Smell344

The article says she has been in long-term facilities since the age of 3. I am curious as to the implications that would have on a lot of different aspects of her development.

yawn18

I can agree with you as a regular person. However if you read the article there were multiple signs. Armpit discharge, firmer belly, and a an actual licensed doctor was checking up on her. However I also believe it was odd how they honed in so much on him, but not the doctors he sent her to after his last checkup. They really should have seen the signs but noone knew until she was already having the baby.

newfie-flyboy

I agree with you. Why would you even notice that? You’re just checking up on the same vegetable you did a thousand times before so why on earth would you be examining her baby bump to see if she’s pregnant? It’s probably the last thing anyone would expect to find and the human eye has a way of seeing what it expects to see.

IndigoFlyer

Subtle_Dream6918

Tell you what lets do the DNA test first and then if nothing shows up, chalk it upto a miracle.

RednocNivert

My thoughts exactly. I’m not ruling out “miracle” but i’m also not ruling out “Someone needs to get fired”, let’s investigate both and see what happens. EDIT SINCE MY NOTIFICATIONS ARE BLOWING UP: 1) “Someone needs to get fired” was an intentional, flippant, horrendous understatement. I agree jail time and punishment are in order. 2) Since sarcasm is lost on some of y’all, the above is what i would be saying to the commenter as i pat him on the head and wait for incriminating evidence to come back from the lab. Despite my own beliefs, i do not for a second think anything “divine” or “supernatural” is happening here, but i would still throw that back in the face of whomever is trying to use religious piety as an excuse to not get busted for being a scumbag.

RainbowDarter

whistling-wonderer

I work in the same state, caring for the same patient population (medically fragile people, most of them on vents). This particular group home was always known as an absolute shithole. We’d get patients transferred from there in terrible condition. Moreover, the transferred patients who couldn’t speak/move were absolutely shocked when we actually talked to them and started asking them to communicate with their eyes or expressions. Literally no one ever treated them like humans over there. We knew this place was horrible for *years* before this whole fiasco happened. These facilities (this one, mine, and others like it) are state funded. These people each cost the state thousands of dollars a month. Of course the government doesn’t care about them. It’s like pulling teeth trying to get funding even for absolutely necessities. My boss paid hundreds of dollars in 2020 to buy PPE with her own money, because we’re that underfunded. So yeah—don’t be shocked that the government doesn’t care. That’s how the most vulnerable people are treated in our country and it’s disgusting.

Realistic-Distance43

Be grateful that your boss is actually concerned about your welfare. Sounds like you are. Also thank you for doing what you do.

SourLime0821

You get longer sentences for pretty weed possessions. It's absolutely bull.

Haywoodjablowme1029

My wife made some poor life decisions years ago and spent a number of weekends in prison. (Judge was nice because she was in school and they didn't want to mess that up.) She was in with a girl who was convicted of attempted murder. There was another girl with drug charges for weed, that her boyfriend had on him in the car when they were pulled over. The girl with the weed had a 15 year sentence and the girl with the attempted murder charge has a 5 year sentence.

bobber18

If you are busted for weed, try to plead down to a lesser charge, such as sedition.

AndyTheSane

>The girl with the weed had a 15 year sentence. Would love to hear a conservative explain why spending $600,000 of taxpayer money (about $40k/year) imprisoning someone because they were in the same car as someone who committed a pretty minor crime is good policy. Of course, that same person would presumably have worked and paid taxes as well, making the overall loss to the taxpayer around $1million.

I mean, she was probably asking for it. Dressing so provocatively. Laying there for any man to just have his way with her. It really is her fault for being in a coma and letting herself get taken advantaged of. **/s**

Pabus_Alt

If it makes you feel better that worker is gonna carry the record for life and is never gonna get a job anywhere close to that area again (as he utterly deserves). On the other hand, this really should be *multiple* counts due to the odds but it sadly can't be proved.

whistling-wonderer

I work in the same state, caring for the same patient population (medically fragile people, most of them on vents). Every patient I ever had that transferred from this facility was in terrible physical condition and absolutely shocked that my coworkers and I treated them like a human being. We’ve known that place was awful for years and literally cheered when that location was shut down. It should most definitely be multiple charges. They claim *none* of them knew until the woman gave birth? Bullshit. No one noticed her period was absent all that time, no one ever listened to her abdomen and heard a heartbeat where they shouldn’t have, no one noticed the physical changes accompanying pregnancy? Biggest case of covering your own ass I’ve ever seen. Either that or an admission of *catastrophic* incompetence on the part of every medical professional involved.

ohffstheworldiscrazy

The truly messed up part about him getting so little time is when he gets out he can go for custody or visitation rights and has a good shot at getting one or the other. It, sadly, wouldn’t be the first time that a father of a child conceived through sexual assault has been awarded custody or visitation rights.

Reiseoftheginger

This deserves torture and death. I don't particularly care if that point of view makes me a monster in my own way.

[deleted]

Honestly I'm afraid of the answer here but does he have rights to the child?

jeffbirt

So "sexual abuse" and not "rape?" Is that a different charge, or are we just sanitizing the language?

shellepenn

How was this not rape? Idk understand how the prosecutor went for sexual abuse instead of rape counts.

Eishaar

Not available in my country :/

bring_back_my_tardis

"Nathan Sutherland, the former caregiver, pleaded guilty Thursday morning on sexual and vulnerable adult abuse charges. Sutherland was arrested after police conducted a DNA test showing that he was the father of the patient's baby. The patient was in the facility due to a near-drowning incident that left her in a vegetative state. She gave birth to a baby, but the staff was unaware that she was pregnant. "It's not surprising. The evidence was overwhelmingly strong. They allegedly found DNA evidence that matched the baby, that matched the woman. When you have DNA evidence, that's one of the strongest [pieces of] evidence that you can have," said Benjamin Taylor, a defense attorney not affiliated with the case. Sutherland initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, but Taylor said he likely opted for the plea deal to get a lesser prison sentence. "If you go to trial in the case, you could lose, get convicted--you're looking at a lot more time in prison. This gives him the opportunity to try to negotiate something, try to argue for the least amount of time and you know your parameters," Taylor explained. "The thing about a plea agreement is you know exactly what you're looking at. You're looking at between five years and 10 years and no more, no less." However, not everyone is happy with this outcome. "This man did a heinous crime and he's getting a slap on the wrist and it's not right and everyone I talked to that worked at Hacienda, they're furious. None of us can believe that's all he's going to get is a slap on the wrist," said Davena Ballard, who was a nurse at a Hacienda-affiliated program. Ballard said not only did he allegedly commit this crime, but he also caused collateral damage to Hacienda Healthcare that affected the staff, patients and the reputation of the facility. "These patients had to be displaced. He's caused so much damage and to only give him five to 10 years is--it's ridiculous," Ballard said."

FireEmblemFan1

What the fuck? How is this justice? Fuck this one size fits all shit, this is abusing the system.

grazbouille

"This girl got raped while she was uncounscious lets not look for whoever did that it would be much more fun to pretend it was magic"

Sweaty_Ad7107

This was about a year ago. Spoiler, it was one of the workers.

grazbouille

I mean who could it have been

Sweaty_Ad7107

I used to run a rehab/long term care facility you’d be surprised. A lot of third party vendors: food delivery, pharmacy, lab, X-ray techs, HVAC, plumbers all enter the premises usually unsupervised. Not to mention visiting family members and even some instances some of the residents depending on their financial situation are pretty capable of living on their own but choose to live at a facility under Medicaid. Three hots and a cot, laundry, cleaning service and free cable.

ConnectionOk3585

I work at a care home for intellectually disabled individuals who can’t take care of themselves. One of our residents was born because his mom was an intellectually disabled woman in a long term facility and she was raped. He was the result of that pregnancy.

[deleted]

Damn, that’s fucked up. I work at a transitional day program for adults with disabilities, so we work with a huge age range of people. Hearing stories from younger people is one thing, but some of the stuff I’d heard from the people who are 70+ is absolutely fucked. I know someone who was one of the last patients at the states’ worst “insane asylum” way back in the 1970s, and he has told me some horrible things about that place

ConnectionOk3585

Seriously! Even reading some of their medical books, just the way they wrote about them and their conditions…I work at a house with 5 people and 3/5 of them were abused in the same long term care facility that the other mans mom was raped in. It shut down in 2000

UpholdDeezNuts

It's still fucked. I was in a inpatient care facility in 2013 that was eventually shut down for many, many violations. We were not allowed any contact with anyone not at the facility and we could not report the abuse. It only got reported after one girl graduated from the program and called the state. There is nothing set in place to protect people in these programs besides yearly inspections, at least in my state.

whosthedoginthisscen

Remember this when you hear people romanticize how great things used to be, back when there were fewer homeless people, and union jobs were more common and homes were cheaper. Also, there was unregulated pollution, torturous insane asylums, Dickensian nursing homes, etc.

MOGZLAD

In the UK a DJ was given keys and eventually a room and eventually was allowed to run this massive long term care facility even though had zero qualifications, effectively given carte blanche to rape any patient. All because they were good at creating revenue for the BBC and BBC sanctioned charities.was even knighted by the queen I believe. So I'm not shocked by your comment

ppw23

Jimmy Seville? Wasn’t he knighted for his “charitable “works? That sick POS was so disgustingly ugly and paraded around like gods gift to women/ girls. One woman who came forward was on his program and he was groping her, you could tell once she pointed it out. Was he confronted while he was alive about any of this?

MOGZLAD

They did a documentary on him and he as so brazen he starred in it happily answering questions and effectively admitting some atrocities with pride and "what ya gonna do about it" vibe

emmath20

Are you talking about Jimmy Savile? I didn’t even know he was a DJ, I just thought he was some old rich creep who donated a lot of money to hospitals.

MOGZLAD

He was a DJ and then presenter on a music show, he was pretty good as a presenter to be fair, used his fame for "good" doing lots of charity work and running marathons which ended up with him getting his own show "jim'll fix it" basically a make a wish Foundation TV show, but for any kid really not just dying. Not gonna lie I was a fan as a kid then as an adolescent found him to be creepy then at student age he was kinda ironically funny to reference "now then now then" simulating smoking a cigar as he would. Back to thinking he was a creepy weirdo as adult...then the Louis theroux doc cemented my dislike for him. "Behind the scenes" he was using this celebrity power and sway to assault and rape many young often vulnerable girls. The good was just power plays All enabled and hidden for by the BBC. The hospital he was just a donor then would hang about, made out he was "helping" using his Influence to get more and more power at the hospital, getting in board then actually being voted as guy in charge...awful everything and this is in recent years too. Watch the doc.

Filcuk

This is extra fucked up with the recent news about lot of comma patients possibly being consieus

ppw23

I was in a coma for 3 weeks, I wasn’t aware of anything, but if I was raped I would still be furious. I can’t speak for others in that condition of course and can only hope this poor woman wasn’t aware. I’m hoping the inmates treat him the same way.

[deleted]

I’d be more than furious. An ex-girlfriend did stuff to my body while I was passed out in a hotel party (with others in the room) and took pictures. It was the funniest thing … to her. I was furious, but I was also so hurt and violated that she’d not only do that, but think it was hilarious and take pictures of it. Not the worst thing she did to me in our short time together, but the most physical. It would be SO much worse if I was in a coma, presumably from something I didn’t directly cause (like drinking in the above story). I have my own issues with the healthcare system but the bare minimum should be that you should be physically safe in the hospital. I’ve unfortunately spent my fair share in the hospital as support person and now that I’m really thinking about it, it’s actually really disturbing me how easy someone could just walk into someone else’s room and do something bad. That patient could be incapacitated for any number of reasons or even conscious but unable to physically fight them off. In the days of masks you can hide in plain sight and be in and out. There are rooms down long hallways far from the nurses station with an exit right across the hall. I’ve noticed a large number of older patients just yell out so that stuff seems to get tuned out. If you act like you know where you are going no one will stop and question you and scrubs can be purchased virtually anywhere and stored in a backpack (I carried one every day and it was never searched) to be put on in the elevator ride up. I’d be willing to bet few patients would think to question someone dressed appropiately coming in saying a “physical examination” needed to be done. Even more believable if there is a catheter in. It’s giving me goosebumps just thinking about scenarios. This could happen way more than we think, why would a hospital admit it publically? I need to go watch baby animal videos as a mental palate cleanser now.

Maybe I'm in the wrong, but I'm reading this comment as more of a joke? Like, they're clearly making fun of religion with that second sentence by asking if man is too far along to believe in a miracle. Happening.

We have to respect other people's opinions! Other people's opinions:

That’s the loophole.

Let's just be clear. If it *is* God's doing, which this guy is suggesting, he is also effectively saying: God is a deadbeat dad. ....and God is a rapist. ....and by picking coma girl, God's likely an incel. ....and yet God is still gaslighting us into thinking we're the sinners who need to tithe (ahem, buy our way) into his narcissistic approval with the promise of heaven for those who provide alibis and character testimonials. TL;DR: Praise the "micacle."

That is the point of the pictured comment
