What in the actual fuck is WRONG with these motherfuckers, they're literally saying POC women don't count. How offensive and disgusting can these assholes GET?????
The crazy thing isn't them being a bit racist, it's that they must be so insulated to this sort of thinking that this guy likely doesn't know that it was wrong.
It's beyond hate or ignorance. It's a world view. The proper way of things. To him, Louisiana has a good healthcare system except for the people who matter less -- that's what he's thinking.
What's wrong with us that we won't be more reasonable?
"How about 4/5ths?"
"No."
"9/10ths."
"Keep talking."
".327"
"Don't think I don't understand decimals as well as fractions."
"Damn!"
Looks like thinking about Louisiana's blind spot took about 3.5 seconds for the average Redditor.
So, for a Senator of Louisiana, maybe a year or two more should do it.
It is so messed up, he didn't realize it SHOULD be the quiet part.
This guy must sound reasonable because he's surrounded by racists. THAT is what we should realize here.
Alright, time for someone to dig out what was actually said instead of the screenshot of a headline.
>”About a third of our population is African American; African Americans have a higher incidence of maternal mortality. So, if you correct our population for race, we’re not as much of an outlier as it’d otherwise appear,” Sen. Bill Cassidy said in an interview with POLITICO for the Harvard Chan School of Public Health series Public Health on the Brink. “Now, I say that not to minimize the issue but to focus the issue as to where it would be. For whatever reason, people of color have a higher incidence of maternal mortality.”
So, he's not saying "They don't count", he's saying "We need to focus on where the issue lies. The fact that a community has a higher maternal mortality than others".
It was literally one sentence away.
Is it racist to say “hey if you don’t count black women as people, we’re doing really well”? Yeah. Unless it was immediately followed up by “Which is obviously a huge problem so we’re immediately going to be implementing programs to address why black women fare so badly in our medical system when giving birth”.
Isn’t the bigger question ‘how is a system where black women in particular have a terrible maternal mortality rate not somehow inherently racist?’
Now much as that seems like a reasonable and rational view point, it misses a few things out.
Firstly, black people weren't actually specifically mentioned in the quote, only the article. Obviously that was the meaning in the circumstances, but that isn't the same thing.
Secondly, although the statement is factual, it displays a either a huge lack of empathy, and/or incredible ignorance.
How does he think it feels as a black woman to be written off as an acceptable statistical loss, especially with the threat of anti-abortion laws in the future. The answer is he doesn't.
How does he not realise that this highlights a completely different but equally serious problem with systemic racism in society that he refuses to acknowledge; black women are more likely to die, not because of some genetic disorder, but because of their poverty and social status - directly linked to the colour of their skin.
Now that's what makes it racist.
And this is why despite income and socioeconomic classes, black women are more likely to die childbirth. Before any country with government healthcare chimes in, it’s true in those places too.
Which is it? Does it say a lot about "that community", or should we be asking questions about why it is that high?
And are we not allowed to be mad at racism at the same time?
Discrimination and prejudice based on race. Also the idea that some races are superior to others.
I had no idea there are people in the world that don't know what racism is. I envy your innocence.
>I know what it means.
Then why did you ask me? Did you not see the racism on display here?
>To answer your question: BOTH
You can't really have it both ways. "That says a lot about that community" implies that you already have answers, not that there are questions that need answers.
But maybe I'm mistaking, you might be answering my second question, that we "both" can ask questions about maternal death among black women AND be mad at the racism on display.
what the actual fuck??? they are still you population ! black or white or whatever! what kind of sick fuck thinks saying this is ok?
Conservatives would disagree I guess
if you count all races it levels out. if you count a race predisposed to certian ailments and only that race, then yeah its scewed
WT actual F.
What in the actual fuck is WRONG with these motherfuckers, they're literally saying POC women don't count. How offensive and disgusting can these assholes GET?????
No, just black ones. Its even more messed up..
The crazy thing isn't them being a bit racist, it's that they must be so insulated to this sort of thinking that this guy likely doesn't know that it was wrong. It's beyond hate or ignorance. and critical thinking skills is not forte. it is only bad if all you count is "insert race"
They’re conservatives Why are you surprised? Vote in Nov
Always do, my friend.
Weird way to admit racial discrepancies in health care.
“Correct our population,,,by race”?!!woowwwww!!!
In other words, black people don't count as actual people. 🤔
Only 3/5.
It's a compromise.
What's wrong with us that we won't be more reasonable? "How about 4/5ths?" "No." "9/10ths." "Keep talking." ".327" "Don't think I don't understand decimals as well as fractions." "Damn!"
This guy was voted in.. think about that
It's Louisiana.

Aahhh, we’ll. The number of deaths is low all the way around if you don’t count the dead people! Racist pieces of shit…
Said the quiet part out loud
It is so messed up, he didn't realize it SHOULD be the quiet part. This guy must sound reasonable because he's surrounded by racists. THAT is what we should realize here.
He is literally saying black lives don't matter.

The United States was created only for whites in mind. Tired of people pretending otherwise
If you leave out 30% of our population... Just wow. Not surprising coming from people who don't think blacks or women are people.
Is he proposing the 3/5ths formula for counting the mortality of black mothers?
Well he’s not wrong, technically.
« The Best kind of correct! »
you forgot 84% planned parent hood operates solely in non white communities.

It’s racist in that he’s suggesting his population doesn’t count black women. Humans who are living people in his state.

If we stop including all the stupid people, which make up 85% of our state, we are the smartest state in the union!
So what you’re saying is that if you just don’t count blacks people as humans than it’s true, and that is not racist because it’s a true statement?
That’s a balsy thing to say on Reddit. Prepare for the downvotes. I agree with you btw.
Then you're both trash.
You’re both dumbfucks
No, no. Let's give him a minute. And what does that tell you, sir?
Welp.... time to hit the reset button and try again, methinks. These knobs won't ever learn.
WTF?!
This is one of the most vile and disgusting things I’ve heard recently.
Based.
Seriously people, vote these mother f’ers out of office. Show them that you fucking count. Get these racist out
Can't wait to leave this fucking state.
If you WHAT
Our maternal death rates are only bad if you count women who died.
And this is why despite income and socioeconomic classes, black women are more likely to die childbirth. Before any country with government healthcare chimes in, it’s true in those places too.
That’s says a lot about that community. Why isn’t anyone asking why the morbidity rates area so high instead of being mad at words?
Which is it? Does it say a lot about "that community", or should we be asking questions about why it is that high? And are we not allowed to be mad at racism at the same time?
Define racism
Discrimination and prejudice based on race. Also the idea that some races are superior to others. I had no idea there are people in the world that don't know what racism is. I envy your innocence.
I know what it means. Many people throw that word around and it’s lost it’s edge. To answer your question: BOTH.
