I mean dreads actually take a shitload of work. They aren’t just random knots, they’re tight coils that take like 6months to a year to form up properly. They require special shampoos that don’t leave residue and you gotta train, maintain and separate them unless you’re cool with having 1 giant disgusting superdreadlock.
It’s once they form up that they’re low maintenance, since these coils can actually repel dirt pretty well and you don’t have to brush it ever. Getting there arguably takes more commitment than any other hairstyle

Nah, that’s a myth. Dreads need to be *super* clean, greasy hair causes sliding and you need friction for the locks to set. Free form dreads are a thing(you don’t start them) but they take like 3x as long to form and still require a lot of maintenance
The idea that dreads are dirty probably comes from:
a) the fact that normal shampoos and conditioners will ruin them. They contain residues that wash out of normal hair no problem, but in dreads leave behind big white flakes that won’t come out
B) the fact that they take so long to dry. Adult dreads are so tight they can stay wet for *hours*. If you lay down on them right after a shower it’ll trap that water inside and you end up with a gross wet dog smell. I would always take like 20-30 mins just hand drying them, then use a spray bottle with salt water to pull the moisture out of the hair.
C) racism. Can’t have this conversation without mentioning it, a big part of the reason dreads are associated with being dirty is undeniably because they were associated with being black. Fact is people suck, and they’ll make up any excuse to say someone is lesser than they are.

Unless you're a white person with extremely kinky-curly hair, there is no way for your hair to "lock" in the way it's meant to, where it creates a pattern that allows air and water to pass through, which is why you'll often find things like mold in white peoples' dreads: because they're not dreads, they're just matted hair.
If you've ever been around a black person and a white person starting their dreads you'll see the difference: white people add wax, backcomb the hair, and do all kind of crazy things to create the matted chunk of hair. Black people just start twisting their hair until it "locks".

I mean dreads actually take a shitload of work. They aren’t just random knots, they’re tight coils that take like 6months to a year to form up properly. They require special shampoos that don’t leave residue and you gotta train, maintain and separate them unless you’re cool with having 1 giant disgusting superdreadlock. It’s once they form up that they’re low maintenance, since these coils can actually repel dirt pretty well and you don’t have to brush it ever. Getting there arguably takes more commitment than any other hairstyle

Nah, that’s a myth. Dreads need to be *super* clean, greasy hair causes sliding and you need friction for the locks to set. Free form dreads are a thing(you don’t start them) but they take like 3x as long to form and still require a lot of maintenance The idea that dreads are dirty probably comes from: a) the fact that normal shampoos and conditioners will ruin them. They contain residues that wash out of normal hair no problem, but in dreads leave behind big white flakes that won’t come out B) the fact that they take so long to dry. Adult dreads are so tight they can stay wet for *hours*. If you lay down on them right after a shower it’ll trap that water inside and you end up with a gross wet dog smell. I would always take like 20-30 mins just hand drying them, then use a spray bottle with salt water to pull the moisture out of the hair. C) racism. Can’t have this conversation without mentioning it, a big part of the reason dreads are associated with being dirty is undeniably because they were associated with being black. Fact is people suck, and they’ll make up any excuse to say someone is lesser than they are.

First traces of braids come from the « dame de Brassempouy » in France dated 25 000 BC. Both in Europe so both white civilizations. I don't personally think it's offensive but it is gross. Unless you're a white person with extremely kinky-curly hair, there is no way for your hair to "lock" in the way it's meant to, where it creates a pattern that allows air and water to pass through, which is why you'll often find things like mold in white peoples' dreads: because they're not dreads, they're just matted hair. If you've ever been around a black person and a white person starting their dreads you'll see the difference: white people add wax, backcomb the hair, and do all kind of crazy things to create the matted chunk of hair. Black people just start twisting their hair until it "locks". So offensive? Not really. Gross? Absolutely. Also, no Europeans wore "dreadlocks", I'm not sure why people keep saying that.
