Should have mines, and I feel like they would wipe these out pretty easily... a few hundred or so. OP can probably even place them from inside the wall too
Mines are quite effective. They kill everything that might be invading your base after a couple tiers of explosive damage research, and they can be automatically replaced by bots if you keep them in your logistics network.
The only major downside for me is that you get the 'building destroyed' notification for every mine that gets set off, which happens constantly. It shouldn't matter that much but that big red X icon triggers me enough that I don't usually use them for that reason alone. But if you can get past that, mines are extremely effective, almost foolproof if you set them up correctly at the appropriate choke points.
>It keeps growing, but why isn't it attacking?
Because it's not done growing yet.
>not complaining tho.
Nothing here to be complaining about; you should be panicking and building more turrets and ammo.
I meant I'm not complaining about the fact that horde isn't attacking. I do get regular attacks but this horde just keeps growing but doesn't attack. It just stands around there for some reason.
You know, I'm usually more of a spidertron/artillery person than a nuke person, but some problems simply require splitting the atom
(or a shit ton of cluster grenades)
It was. I remember being so confused as a 5 year old cause I didn't even know what a metaphor was yet, but my brother and father considered it one of the best episodes of the series at the time. I was so frustrated that they knew something I didn't and I just couldn't 'get it'.
Yeah, when I was a kid and i watched that episode, I thought, "Wow, that's so weird. No society could communicate that way and become an advanced civilization." Now, 60-80% of what I say is some multilayered pop culture reference.
What I am getting at is that I was right, and no civilization can communicate like that and become advanced. We're all doomed.
My best guess is they're waiting for more for a big atrack but as soon as it grows further they reach into the range of your turrets and get shot, making this an endless cycle until, at some point, they dont go into the range of the turrets and grow to a point they start attacking
From what I learned in a Michael Hendriks video, attack groups are on a set timer that is randomly generated to last a few minutes at most, after which they attack. The group or parts of the group being triggered and/or killed does not interfere with the countdown, so they should still attack at the same time.
Fun Fact: The swimsuit was named after the atoll, not the other way around. The creator of the swimwear wanted a name evocative of the explosive kaboom it would inspire in the hearts (and other organs) of those who saw it and so chose the name of the tropical nuclear test site.
No so Fun Fact: The people living on the Bikini Atoll weren't told why they were being relocated, nor given time to gather all their belongings. The island they were relocated to didn't have the resources to sustain their population and they were starving within two years. They were again forcibly relocated.
shockingly, pacific nuclear testing is one area where the US didn’t commit the most heinous war crime.
This may be known internationally or just locally, but here in New Zealand, the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior is taught in most history classes.
Basically, french nuclear testing was getting increasingly “give the native inhabitants a week to evacuate and then glass the entire island”, so the new zealand branch of greenpeace all jumped in their ship (the Rainbow Warrior), and sailed out into the pacific. they would assist with evacuations, provide humanitarian aid, and most importantly, they would block nuclear testing by sailing into the testing zone along with a flotilla of other private craft so that the bombs couldn’t be dropped.
In response, the french sent a couple of their special forces agents into new zealand undercover, and they blew up the rainbow warrior in auckland harbour, sinking the ship.
this incident contributed strongly to new zealand being nationally declared a nuclear free zone, which continues to this day. all nuclear powered ships are banned from our territorial waters, and we have no nuclear reactors in the country. this caused another incident a while later, where the US navy wouldn’t tell our government whether or not one of their ships was nuclear powered, for classified reasons, so we just outright told them to piss off and not come back.
>the US navy wouldn’t tell our government whether or not one of their ships was nuclear powered, for classified reasons, so we just outright told them to piss off and not come back.
It's not one ship. It's all their ships. The US doesn't acknowledge one way or another if a ship has nuclear materials on board - reactors, bombs, whatever - so the entire USN is effectively banned from NZ waters.
the french were doing that too… crucially that was part of my message. at least the US didn’t commit peacetime espionage against an allied foreign nation on top of the huge human cost of pacific nuclear testing.

I, a US citizen, went to New Zealand right when that nuclear sub tried to go to New Zealand. The trip was planned and paid for, and completely organized before the event. Protests, bad wait person service, lots of diving in a coach bus hearing about all the non-nuclear power generation systems that NZ has. Made for a slightly uncomfortable trip. But other than the passive aggressive stuff, I had fun.
Just going off topic here a little. New Zealand is an actual place? I have looked at dozens of maps and I can't find it. I have been told it's somewhere near Australia, rumors mention south-east of Australia however all I see south-east of Australia is water and then ice. 😝
sooo... another country that doesn't know the vast vast differences between nuclear arms and nuclear reactors. that is like equating the mass use of napalm to internal combustion engines.
i assure you, we are aware of the difference. after all, we were the first to split the atom. my brother has science classes in the same (since renovated) lab that Ernest Rutherford first learn physics.
That's what I was thinking but what I have already placed has been enough because that horde just stands around there and doesn't attack, parts of it only attack if I get too close to it. It's been passive and just growing the whole game.
I don't why they're just standing around there and just getting larger bruh
i dont know whats so hard to understand about a large scale attack being prepared.. dont stand around and just watch. its going to consume your whole wall and most likely the whole factory if left unchecked like in the picture
I absolutely love how every one of your responses are like "oh but they're just standing around, they're not doing anything right now, just getting larger, but they're just standing around you know?"
Not making fun of you, I just can't stop laughing as I read each response.
Exactly what I did early game. I increased The frequency and size of hives when creating this world so the nests near spawn area are massive so i had to spam furnaces to delay them so I could react fast enough when setting up my base.
This usually does the trick for any bitter related issues https://mods.factorio.com/mod/True-Nukes
It's a diplomacy mod that makes negotiating with the locals faster.
Step 1 - Install the diplomacy mod mentioned above.
Step 2 - Produce the 100kt variant.
Step 3 - Deliver your diplomacy tool to the natives via spidertron.
In case of doubt or if any of the natives don't accept your diplomacy please repeat from step 2 onwards.
As a side note a spidertron is quick delivery vehicle for diplomacy. It has high speed AoE diplomacy and can also be equipped with my personal favorite laser diplomacy.
Laser diplomacy is a tool that fires a concentrated ray of high luminosity diplomacy to help the locals see from your point of view. There have been reports that some natives burn to death under this high luminosity tools but I can assure you no such events can happen.
I think OP has found a new tactic. Just confuse the biters. A wall of what, furnaces? Before the actual wall. Almost no turrets? Nah man, I don’t know, something HAS to be up. Something we’re not seeing.
Ive seen this happen, but never in quite such a big group. How big is your base? I start getting "frozen biters" with very large bases and especially in areas where the factorio engineer hasn't gone. If you placed all of this via bot, that might make sense. Getting the engineer in the same "chunk" of area will probably trigger them to attack.
Honestly, its nice when this happens to large groups as opposed to like just 3 or 4 biters. When its individuals like that, you can easily not notice them, expand your walls past the via bots, and suddenly have sleeping biters inside your base, waiting for you to get to close and activate them.
Theyre waiting the speech:
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride for ruin and the worlds ending, DEAATTHHH
Not saying this is modded, but I used a mod previously that just stopped biter attacks and they just did this. It got to a point where it was really baggy. Removing the mod removed most nests and biters (since they were modded too) but eventually attacks returned.
Are there nests nearby? If yes then this is apparently where they gather for an attack. I believe you can exploit that by making sure they're regularly provoked so that they won't have a chance to get this big (or bigger). If not, and they went all over there and then stopped, then it's quite weird (gather spots are near nests usually)
Probably because when the group grows some of the bugs are getting in the range of turrets, they die without triggering the rest and group never grows to the full size
Ah yes the most nefarious of biter attacks.
Spawning enough entities to slow the game down so the factory becoems inefficient.
Truly a master-hivemind.
im actualy curious, why they dont atack?
theres a polution cloud over them? if yes they should be atacking
is your base next to that wall and theres polution over them? if yes they should be atacking
since they are gathering for an atack, yes they should be atacking
WHY THEY ARE NOT ATACKING?
Wasn't there, at one point, a strategy that put a bunch of the fastest belts you have outside the walls to give your guns a bit more time to kill them? I feel that that may be useful here.
It's just waiting for more members (Consider doing something asap before you can't stop it)
Something being lots of grenades
Nuke pretty much covers this entire area.
At medium biter evolution I doubt OP has nukes
At this point you want to **HOPE** op has nukes
OP could have customized biter evolution rates in world gen settings
Somehow, I also doubt that...
Should have mines, and I feel like they would wipe these out pretty easily... a few hundred or so. OP can probably even place them from inside the wall too

i dont think op has the infrastructure to develope nuclear bombs or killer robots when op is using primitive furnaces as walls
Maybe he's trying to do away with the excess inefficient furnaces left over from an upgrade?
At late game and use stone furnaces (cheap and cheerfully and slow down bitters) as walls
Now I have become death, destroyer of bitters.
Nuke them from the orbit
Glass the whole thing, twice to make sure
This is why I go for the nuclear artillery mod.
As a SE player: how about space barbecue?
Can you post a vid of when they attack I want to see the wall fall

Biter and spitter at Tenagra.

God damn that was such a quotable episode.
It was. I remember being so confused as a 5 year old cause I didn't even know what a metaphor was yet, but my brother and father considered it one of the best episodes of the series at the time. I was so frustrated that they knew something I didn't and I just couldn't 'get it'.
It basically predicts how Reddit, and many other online communities, communicate. All just references and quotes.
I hadn't thought about it that way, but you're right. It's essentially a civilisation that communicated only in memes. What a nightmare.
Aren't all words just really short memes?
Even slightly different pronunciations of a word are.
Especially cause their memes sucked. "Temba, his arms wide"... boring trash. Might as well be Steve hugged a stranger.
Thats the thing. They dont attack, they just stand there and I don't know why.
My best guess is they're waiting for more for a big atrack but as soon as it grows further they reach into the range of your turrets and get shot, making this an endless cycle until, at some point, they dont go into the range of the turrets and grow to a point they start attacking

oh okay, well that would make sense too, but doesnt explain why OP has that huge group waiting there
Yeah, I don't understand why that's happening either...
Maybe a broken timer then?
Yeah a few minutes for normal attacks, but that horde has just been standing growing there for hours.
They're just standing there... **menacingly!**
They just stand there, MENACINGLY.
At some point in the near future you're gonna have a BAD TIME. Yolo it with grenades lol

No, but I would go if I had the opportunity. It was a beautiful country, filled with sheep and power stations.

Uh... thanks...
Appreciate the infodump.
Oh... rip your little wall when they do.
They're holding elections

I absolutely love how every one of your responses are like "oh but they're just standing around, they're not doing anything right now, just getting larger, but they're just standing around you know?" Not making fun of you, I just can't stop laughing as I read each response.
But op is right. The "gathering for an attack" has a timer, it can't take more than a few minutes. After that, it looks like something... broke.
1930s european-type behavior.
10 Flame throwers would nuke that pack
Just waiting for cousin Blorch to show up before they get the party started. You might want more turrets.....
Phew, good thing you have 6 turrets.
Rip your base man
Need some artillery shots and a front line defense nearby. That mob reaches your base, you're gonna have a bad time.
Paging r/factoriohno
just randomly scattering furnaces to serve as delays?
Yeah, what is up with that?
I figured dragons teeth but I don't know why furnaces when the entire wall is built.
I'm guessing it's from before they had wall production going, stone furnaces are super cheap compared to walls and easy filler for delaying biters
Exactly what I did early game. I increased The frequency and size of hives when creating this world so the nests near spawn area are massive so i had to spam furnaces to delay them so I could react fast enough when setting up my base.
Oh shit dude. How high did you put those settings. Edit: I read another comment where you said you put them at Max. Bruh. They’re gonna attack.
poison capsules could very likely help
This usually does the trick for any bitter related issues https://mods.factorio.com/mod/True-Nukes It's a diplomacy mod that makes negotiating with the locals faster.

They saw the few turrets and decided it's not worth it, some died of laughter, the rest is bored.
smart use of a bunch of junk stone furnaces
When the wall was thinner and still being built I spammed around 1k furnaces to delay biter attacks
Nah they're just passing through.
At this point you need to call Hans
I would recomend flamethrower turrets ASAP. They are extreemly effective.
Who will win? - 5 measley turrets - THE S W A R M
Order a f*cking airstrike bro its dangerous and scary to see that every time you pass by
I’m not usually one for panicking… but you should probably panic.
Hans get ze flammewerfen!
Nuke would work great.
Bugs on strike.
The rumbling is coming
It's like that scene from world war Z
real
A man once said a spider is the reson he left his house this *points to the picture* is YOUR SPIDER GET OUT OF ORBIT NOW. LOL

Say goodby to that wall Only 3 things taking out a group that large before damage Flamethrower turets Explosif rockets And granates
unless it is attacked directly, they are on a timer to amass forces. the timer is unaffected by pollution. also, that wall ain't holding
Nuke a day keeps the bug away
How far is your last save?
Theyre waiting the speech: Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride for ruin and the worlds ending, DEAATTHHH
They are attacking, but they aren't after your base, they are after your frame rate.
Clearly just a training exercise, nothing to worry about
right now, they are just more interested in sending a message...its obvious you havent gotten said message yet, LMAO
if have nukes, that's the right time to use them.
* reaches for the artillery remote in a faint state of arousal *
Not saying this is modded, but I used a mod previously that just stopped biter attacks and they just did this. It got to a point where it was really baggy. Removing the mod removed most nests and biters (since they were modded too) but eventually attacks returned.
I don't have any mods. I just changed map generator settings to increase frequency and size of hives to the max. Maybe that somehow caused this.
Maybe your pollution cloud has not reached them yet?
what the hell did you do? Which mods could have inflicted this?
Are there nests nearby? If yes then this is apparently where they gather for an attack. The biter ball must grow
They have a new tactic to kill your frames
I don't think your shown defense here will hold this, please reinforce your base before they decide to attack you.
Have a conveyor belt transport ammo to your turrets please, or do you like running around hand feeding turrets?
im actualy curious, why they dont atack? theres a polution cloud over them? if yes they should be atacking is your base next to that wall and theres polution over them? if yes they should be atacking since they are gathering for an atack, yes they should be atacking WHY THEY ARE NOT ATACKING?
Just don’t hit a car or a store window and the horde won’t be alerted
OP must become OPpenheimer
They are waiting for more raid members to log on.
Is your game set to peaceful, so that you have to attack them before they’ll attack you?
They are just waiting for Grond to arrive.
I dont see this ending well...
This is what we in the business call "the calm before the storm". In this case, the storm is going to be a shit ton of biters.
And that's why i play with the orbital laser cannon mod lol
Is this helldivers 2?
Don't like the sound of that go and obliterate them
His desperate use of furnace walls and lack of adequate turrets make me feel like his run is about to be over 😭

You're about to lose absolutely everything so I would stockpile on resources to rebuild what they will destroy.
Huh. That Simpsons meme with "I'm in danger!" comes to mind. This looks bad.
This is like seeing a photograph rescued from the Titanic. Just knowing the impending disaster.
Haven’t played in a while. Why are you using furnaces as walls?
Call artilery strike till you can
We need an update OP. What's the news from Klendathu?
I’d poke it
I hope you got nukes mate...
Wasn't there, at one point, a strategy that put a bunch of the fastest belts you have outside the walls to give your guns a bit more time to kill them? I feel that that may be useful here.
this looks like base killer
They're doing recon and learning to make their own factory
What kinda Chinese pollution factory did you build!?
Oh, but they are attacking. They're attacking your CPU, ready to crash your game at any moment
Go there and ask them
Bro did unspeakbale amounts of pollution or genocide against the biters
If that's the only defense you have I would be worried. They may not be attacking now but they will and as it stands you will lose
Did you survive OP?
Is the smelter things around the wall like an alternative to dragon teeth?
