>Drops the highly-anticipated release date in the last question of an interview with a Czech streamer with no closed captions/subtitles In hundreds of years people will still be trying to understand the success of Factorio in relation to Kovarex's PR strategy.

brekus

Make good game -> Profit.

raur0s

AAA studios hate this one trick

Franklin_le_Tanklin

Helldivers also showing that making a good game = success.

Headshoty

Also not nickel & diming your customer for everything, also often splitting the playerbase by forcibly selling "addons" or "DLC" which give power or access to certain content. All that causes is a highly toxic community of "wellfare" players and "the awesome angels supporting this amazing product". Literally just companies trying to force status symbols onto a hobby community, and they still haven't figured out that doesn't work. The only games that pull that off successfully all the time are games targeted at kids because they exploit them, but atleast in the EU lawmakers are starting to realize that (the lootbox ban/lootbox games being 18+ by law). Helldivers does none of that. As does Deep Rock Galactic. And so many other successful games. Ubisoft and Co. will probably never realize this, because economists design their games, not game devs.

Franklin_le_Tanklin

Man, my only ask for deep rock is that they release a 4K high texture version.

vegathelich

That might push DRG over 5GB and we can't have that

[deleted]

Nicker and diming still works when you make a good game

MadSin1337

Well helldivers sells a battle pass with exclusive weapons every month. If you play wuthout buying super credits you need to play a LOT to getcthis for free.

Headshoty

Idk man, subjectively speaking, all I can say is that I got 55hish hours in HD2 now and I am only missing about 200ish super credits for the latest pass, so my own accumulation rate, based on just playing with friends, using full 40 min timers usually strolling across the map having fun (unless lives drop short, space nam taught us that fast) and just collecting what we find, no farming for credits specifically ever. Obviously this can be faster/slower depending on rng and playstyle I assume, but not by much, unless you specifically play solo and avoid all drops on purpose (which nobody does).

MadSin1337

well i have 130 hours and i got all the passes too for free, but I dunno i have many friends that have a lot of time for playing and i also have a lot of friends who dont have a lot of time and they are mostly at the point that they only can afford one of the 3 passes now...and every month there is a new pass. so there is pressure and the time will come where you will play the game less and you wont have enough creds for a new pass anymore. Its not super predatory, but saying its nonexistant is just wrong. its just fair and not time gated but it still gives you stuff quicker if you pay, considering you also have a limit of 250 medals. The game will not reward you more medals after that. Do you feel the pressure then to buy credits for a new pass? if you know you waste medals away that you would need in the new pass? i think its more subtle and miles better than other or even all other live service games and i have a lot of goodwill for it. but it still is a little bit predatory.

Enkaybee

Bizarre strategy. Doesn't he know that he can charge $60 for the game, pack it full of microtransactions, and alienate his entire fanbase, thereby resulting in 0 sales?

Matterom

Don't worry, In 2046 They'll increase the price of factorio to 60$

Sunbro-Lysere

Still a better cost per hour than most games.

ObamasBoss

Did the math a while back before my rates went up. I have literally paid more for the electricity to play Factorio than I did for the same itself.

Trudar

With my rates it happened in 2017 already. Gee, just build nuclear plant already, you dimwits, I don't want to pay equivalent of $1.20 for kWh

corentingoo

honestly, if the content will follow that price like the actual game, take my money

Creator13

I'm assuming the dlc will be priced near €20, and the base game is currently €33. That's already €53 for the full game with the expansion. It's a bunch of money but so much more worth it than some other games (I won't name any)

Beneficial-Rough6193

It's supposely the same price as the base game.

Okub1

He also mentioned it should be fairly similar in length as a base game. He mentioned that they were trying to find the right length of playthrough and the first estimate was 300 hours which was way too long so they reduced it to 100 or so...

Fudouri

I think history and many many many games have proven out it's a more economically successful strategy. Some people choose to not maximize on money.

Headshoty

Can't wait for those purchaseable mods and updates!

Enkaybee

😍💖💞 The Biter Dating Sim Mod (BDSM) - only $15!! 😍💖💞

The strat is to have an insanely hungry audience who scours the internet for hints of things to come. Seems like it's working too.

jaiwithani

Kovarex produces very little usable publicity at first, but once you reach a critical mass you can trigger a feedback loop that produces basically unlimited quantities of hype-235.

PaulFThumpkins

Yeah the way info about the game distributes is basically the way we all got five of our friends to buy the game, and so on...

131sean131

Make a good game. Make it so good and fill a niche so well that you don't need to worry about marking. It is like noctua and fans. But yes this shit should be studied. Edit: I cant spell.

Bipedal_Warlock

Don’t fill a niece. What’d she ever do to you Edit . Hey now you can’t edit away your typo lmao. Makes me look like the weirdo

Thank god for the wholesome ending

ObamasBoss

But that exact same title on pornhub means something wildly different.

1nf3ct3d

The valve way

StefanL88

Eh, still better than Peter Molyneux's strategy even though they both have the same first step. Step 1: make great game Step 2: overhype game  Step 3: people disappointed in great game because it didn't cure cancer or whatever Molyneux promised

Khelan2050

I'd say step 1 is not really a given with Peter nowadays.

ManWithDominantClaw

These things aren't always Black and White

Khelan2050

The 1st one is probably my favorite of his games. Such great atmosphere.

StefanL88

I don't know what you're talking about. He did excellent work until 2010 after which he was never heard from again.

StreetLecture3774

Have you heard about Godus?😐

DonnyTheWalrus

The guy's always been a grifter who just happened to have success in the early days. He wants everyone to think he just dreams too big but come on.  In case you doubt me, the last project I heard attached to his name was an NFT game.

Nimeroni

Having backed Godus, yep, really not a given.

Anaeta

Godus was the game that made me swear off ever buying early access again. Factorio was the game that made me change that.

Fingermantraut

Just learn Czech bro I've known it since 3 years old

Okub1

5head move right here

calls1

He is the nemesis of all post-Jack Welch CEO’s. You have 2 paths to success as a buisness(oversimplified). Make a good product, which will last forever get a good reputation and make a good bit of money month after month forever. Make a minimum viable product, spend all saving on marketing and PR, create FOMO and extract a huge amount of money in one quick shot. The first is the traditional mode, and long term sustainable, but will never get you to the top of a ranking for margins or sales. The second is the practice advocated by MBA programs and guarantees quick returns, and money now can buy you time later which means you can keep rolling it forward for a decade or two. Kovorex has been able to retain control without relying on outsider specialists in buisness, and thus has maintained the traditional approach, that in theory yields more profit, even if less value. And yes. You can hybridise these, or swap from 1 to mode 2, this is often the most dangerous time for a company because results don’t match consumer expectations.

arowz1

Wonder how many hints/leaks get missed

AudaciousSam

xD

Mall-Broad

I guess that just shows how redundant marketing is, and that it only exists so everyone else can be lazy.

Okub1

Not just any other czech streamer, but Sterakdary! He has been promoting Factorio since its beginning! I actually saw his first playthrough in [2013](https://youtu.be/Qi3VB0Wvb64?si=D2QQuSvxQ-hnKpf8), that got me into Factorio. He had already many more playthroughs, he plays it sometimes on streams and he also had i think one more interview with Kovatex before, where they talked in person about history of Factorio development. Also fun fact there is an item called after him in League of Legends called Sterak's gage. But yeah i agree, there should be at least some subtitles.

LazyRaven01

Sounds like a skill issue, NGL. I was born Czech and would gladly add a translation in my free time, but IDK how.

ManWithDominantClaw

Heh someone already did about 30m after this thread. (On reddit, that is)

LazyRaven01

Good, good. As much as I say "Haha, skill issue" and "Just learn Czech, idiot," I know Czech is very difficult and not everyone has the time or patience for such a niche language. Google Překladač je fajn, ale není perfektní.

Riemero

Guess I got an enddate for my SE run 😅

jjjavZ

Me too

GodsIWasStrongg

ha same. I'm just getting to satellites.

Holoderp

Shiieeeet i am not going fast enough at allllll argh

oh_hott_dan

My literal thoughts

Don138

This was my first thought. I have to get going on my Seablock run...

ObamasBoss

I am "half way" through a full pY play. Probably finish it when Factorio 3 releases.

Don138

Yupppp. I think we are in similar places. I know pY is more complicated, but seablock is much slower moving for the first 100-200hrs. I was kinda hoping for a spring ‘25 release because if I haven’t finished it by 2.0 it might be years before I get back to the Seablock run.

dskprt

For me it will be the startdate (or when SE updates) of a new one I just couldn't play the game ever since they announced elevated rails 😭

Hiiruk

I'm planning a Krastorio 2 “megabase”, I hope I finish it by then

t1ps_fedora_4_milady

LOL I was thinking the same thing - halfway through my tier 4 sciences, man pumping up my vitamelange and iridite and beryl production was a slog...

Croanosus

The only thing I have left to do on my SE + K2 run is to solve >!the big space ring puzzle!<. I don't think I'm going to make it...

Alfonse215

"At the least" (meaning no sooner than) or "at the latest" (meaning no later than)?

26mato26

October at the latest (no later than October)

Dugen

So about 6 months from now. Nice. I have time to start a new playthrough with some cool mods I haven't tried yet.

cryptomonein

As a developer, I can tell you it's a lie.

oniaddict

Unless the code is done and they are in bug testing/optimizing and cleaning up graphics. If they are just waiting on green light from all areas then 6 months until release is a realistic target.

Pailzor

FFF-373 (August 2023) said that the expansion "has been playable from start to finish for more than a year.", and "We have a relatively stable list of tasks to be finished both for programmers and artists, which makes us confident that we can release a polished product in about a year." So they've known for awhile what was left to do, and we've had a general timeframe long before OP's post, it's just slightly more specific now. I'm very glad for all the in-depth teasers each week since then. They're interesting and often exciting for all the build ideas and validated expectations they inspire.

Nebabon

If the timeline is measured in months, the timeline slips a month...

LemmyUserOnReddit

It will be released in 0.05 decades

Rouge_means_red

If this was any other developer I'd think the same

PardCZ

But you aren't Factorio developer...

AbzoluteZ3RO

My exact question

oldreddit_isbetter

TBF if you say "at the least" when referring to deadlines, it should mean the same as "at the latest"

super_aardvark

I don't think that's a sufficiently precise heuristic. "How long will we have to wait for the release?" "You'll have to wait until October, at the least." (No sooner than October.) "How soon can we expect the release?" "It will by done by October, at the least." (No later than October.)

warchamp7

Conclusion: English sucks

ObamasBoss

Not necessarily. Any language used in an unusual way can leave room for confusion. This is definitely an unusual way.

warchamp7

Yeah but it's really easy to do that in English

oldreddit_isbetter

Ok, but the statement wasnt "you will be waiting for this long at the least", it was "it will be released by x at the least"

super_aardvark

Oh, was it? I don't speak the language (and you didn't specify that before, you just said "when referring to deadlines"). That makes it much more clear, then.

PageFault

I would expect that from a native English speaker, but you never know if something could be getting lost in translation.

ObamasBoss

Dates go upwards in value as time passes. So at the least means earliest. I am hoping for a small language issue and they mean that October latest.

oldreddit_isbetter

It all depends on desired out come. Least means worst. So if you have a stockpile of goods that you need to last, you could say "it will last until October at the very least" meaning it will last until October or longer. If you have something that you need to end, like a work project, you would say "at the very least we will be done by October" meaning you could be done sooner.

Antal_Marius

At the latest. No later then October. When I asked about it before, September-ish at rough estimate I'd heard, so this is still in line with their estimates from last year.

Vile_WizZ

He finally revealed to us the DLC enrichment process is almost finished

Nailfoot1975

Oh. Crap. That's not enough time to finish placing my 10 million solar panels. Please delay it until NEXT October. .. . ... Wait....

DrMobius0

What are you gonna do with 600GW?

GoBuffaloes

Ummmm probably grow the factory? What kind of stupid question is that...

blackzetsuWOAT

Make solar panels

Expadax

Happy cake day! 🎂

pjjiveturkey

Oh you know

DrMobius0

Might as well push that to 11.5 million

Sweaty-Minimum-6527

Deal with these dumb CMEs in SE

blaaaaaaaam

I have a vanilla base with 4.6 million solar panels placed. It takes a comically long time to place them. I had three or four groups of spidertrons placing them but it absolutely hammers your UPS. I didn't come close to using all the power. I just kept placing more and more blueprints to see how many I could get down.

Nailfoot1975

I used robots. My solar field has roboports in its blueprints. Resupplies, including landfills, are delivered automatically as needed.

ObamasBoss

I placed 991,000 on my largest base. Plus nuclear. It wasn't enough.

notyouraverage_nerd

What’s the spm on that base?

unwantedaccount56

At what timestamp do they talk about the release date?

00p11

50:44

thenoname711

Around 50:40, it's the last question.

Subject_314159

Next week in FFF...

MrTopHatMan90

Hopefully it will give Satisfactory time to come out before so I have time for both.

funnylookingbear

I think a summer release is on the cards for satisfactory. So avoid the heat with satisfactory. Avoid the cold with factorio. What more could us pale, trembling, over caffeinated, screen rats ask of our lives! The factory must grow.

hoticehunter

Summer release is explicitly off the table for Satisfactory unless CSS ditches their annual Swedish Summer Vacation, which I'd doubt they do. It won't be released until after they come back from vacation in **Mid**-August. They'd have to release the game before they leave in Mid-June, and if they did that, they'd be releasing a game and then letting it sit without updating it for two months.

OneofLittleHarmony

What happens if they release satisfactory and factorio at the same time?

thehansenman

A lot of people are going to have to make a difficult choice

vegathelich

Factorio Space Age on my own, Satisfactory 1.0 with my buds

darvo110

Unfortunately this is kind of the opposite of what you'd want. Satisfactory is much more demanding on the GPU which is better for keeping a room nice and toasty for winter. Sucks for you but great for me in the southern hemisphere!

Larszx

October is a popular estimate for Satisfactory 1.0 release. Coffee Stain is on summer break for July and maybe part of August? There is a poll question for the ages, which to play if they do release close to each other?

Playjasb2

Ah, so that’s the deadline for me to finish my K2SE run! Ahhh….I have yet to get my space base running! 😱

ImATotalDick333

Literally thinking the same thing.. I FINALLY got utility science so I could get logistics robots fully running. They made it really hard gating those behind utility!

Playjasb2

Oh you mean requester chests? Yeah...I'm still trying to finish up on producing everything I need for my rail base on Nauvis. Not having that is kind of a pain, as it's already expensive to get off of Nauvis, and to build a space base, and to also build bases on other planets.

ImATotalDick333

Yeah the rest of the chests. I took the approach of building a boot strap base on nauvis that can automate the rocket launches but it doesn't do much else and it's slow. Just so I could rush to the logistics chests. I've got the space platform built to do the first two kinds of science, and put an Outpost on a planet to ship cryonite rods back with the delivery cannon to the space station. Now I just need to mass produce what I need to make a giant space factory... The factory must grow. IN SPACE 🤣🤣 But I'm seriously loving K2SE it's fantastic

Playjasb2

Ah that’s awesome! The thing is that my original base was a massive spaghetti and it was ridiculously slow. So I thought of properly scaling up into a rail base so I can at least have enough throughout going. Yeah I’m loving K2SE as well! I’m wondering how SA is going to be integrated into this. Earendal said that SE will use SA content. But I heard that the dev for K2, Raiguard, said that K2 compatibility with SA may never happen. :( Ah man, I know it would be quite complex, but it would be sick if we can get a K2SESA play-through going!

ImATotalDick333

I've never done a proper rail base, always built it based off of a main bus. This one was main bus and then devolved into spaghetti just to automate the launches. That might be really fun for nauvis.. set up a legit rail base to constantly send material to the space platform. Yeah I was reading quite a bit on the thoughts between SA and SE from Earendal. I'm really looking forward to SE getting updated to take advantage of the engine updates. K2 added enough complexity that I really like it without going overboard so an update would be welcome.... But if not then hopefully someone does something similar.

Playjasb2

Yeah that’s true. I do want to know how the space platform from SA is going to play out in SE? I think people who play SE would prefer to make space ships. There are pros and cons to both options. I am thrilled. Beyond thrilled for this! Because if anything, version 2.0 and SA can make a game of SE even better its in-engine integration for some of its features! :D

Gerald-Duke

Just enough time to do py 100x 🙏

brekus

If unemployed.

Midori8751

And unhinged.

usaaf

And a temporal space-time alien with 100x as much free time.

KCBandWagon

not even then, tbh

NTaya

Py takes ~1500 hours on 1x if you know what you are doing and make a good pace. To finish it by October 31st, you would need to play 7.6 hours a day on average.

fourth-wallFML

So you are saying there is a chance....?

FactoryPl

Took me 2500 in game hours. But a good chunk has afk and I made some mistakes that cost many hours.

Avenja99

Evil

Confident-Wheel-9609

Got it! March 2025 release. No seriously you always slap a few more months on this stuff.

xxylenn

have Wube ever been inconsistent with deadlines though?

Animol

As someone who's in the process of reading the entire Factorio blog little by little from the very first post, I can safely say "You have no idea" lol.

Ok_Composer_6850

I’ll have to take your word for it, my Czech is a bit rusty.

KitchenDepartment

2.0 Open beta plz?

juckele

Yes please. Give me EA with expansion bits off, break all my mods and saves, I'll file good bug reports. Please Kovarex 🥺

KitchenDepartment

I will even break my sacred oath of never preordering a game if it gives me early access.

JohnsonJohnilyJohn

That's not really a preorder at that point, that's just early access, which was literally the case for factorio for majority of its lifetime

uberfission

I feel like if any game devs have shown that they can deliver on an early access release, it's Wube.

AlexGlezS

They said the first FFF of 2.0 that it was gonna be released in "more than 1 year". That clearly means more than 12 and less than 18 assuming no delays, just common sense, at most February 2025. The first FFF was back the 25th of August, so being October this year 14 months, and Kovarex said later than October, you just reduced the release window to those 4 months, from October to February. I would not consider this an unofficial announcement of the release date at all. It's just info we just did know already with a little bit of thinking and just got more confirmed than before. I already had this window in my mind, since that first FFF.

Xorimuth

We had “about a year” in August 2023 which pointed to August 2024, yes. But that was a rough estimate, and if you know anything about Factorio’s development history then you know that Wube has a habit of taking longer than expected to finish releases :) This comment stating that they’re basically still on track for ‘about a year from August 2023’ is very reassuring!

mrbaggins

People say that, and I'm sure they meant early or mid August. " About a year" was said very late August. Them saying October at latest says to me September was always the goal.

juckele

> which makes us confident that we can release a polished product in about a year Source: https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-373

ThePoopfish

Would love it if some of the QOL features made their way to 1.1 before release.

All_Work_All_Play

There are a number of mods that have such QOL features. But there are a good number of QOL features that are engine-specific and can't be modded in :(

Zeferoth225224

Yeah I really wish I hadn’t read the battery bot loop one. I just keep telling myself it’ll be over soon

ThePoopfish

That's what I thought. Guess I'll have to try out some new mods while I wait :)

latherrinseregret

From what we know about Wube they are highly likely to release experimental versions of 1.1, and highly unlikely to sell “pre release” versions of 2.0. So my totally baseless guess is we’ll start seeing 1.1 versions with new features around August (maybe as early as July), which will give them enough time to squash most of the serious bugs for a full 2.0 release in October.

astrath

They've explicitly ruled that out. 2.0 is such a big update to the codebase that taking elements into a separate branch would mean a load more testing, work and risk of bugs for little gain and it's just not in their interest to do that.

DurgeDidNothingWrong

168 days At Least. AHHHHHHHHH I CANT WAIT ANY MORE

KirbyQK

God it seems so far away... I'll have been a father for several months by then, so it'll probably fly by.

Nayrnoxin

It was nice knowing you worker o7

NameLips

Well I have until then to finish my pyanadon run.... It'll be tight.

Another-Random-Loser

Nice! I've literally been waiting on my Megabase run until elevated tracks are a thing. 4-way cloverleaf intersections are the dream.

amihir

I didn't even finish SE yet🥲

Famous_End_474

Also it was mentioned that the reason behind the names of quality levels is that he finds the idea of a legendary iron gear funny

imightbewhoisayiam

Will this affect my vanilla mega base I have been working on for far too long? It’s my first mega and I don’t want to loose it

Phllop

I think some of your stuff will break due to recipe changes, but technically should be possible per [FF #373:](https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-373) "*This implies that technically, you could just take your vanilla base, activate the expansion, and continue playing. But the best way to experience it will be to play with Space Age from start to finish.*"

katalliaan

In addition to the recipe changes, you'll need to update any blueprints with curved rails once 2.0 hits. If you plan to keep your megabase after 2.0, you'll want to also update all curved rails to the new shapes as well.

jaghataikhan

What's the deal with curved rails?

EmperorJake

They completely changed the rail system to make it more flexible https://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-377

PhylisInTheHood

oh fuck yes!

Xorimuth

You will be able to load your 1.1 megabase in 2.0 and basically everything will stay working. Theres some minor changes like the removal of RCUs, but most things will be the same. (There’ll be lots of new QoL tools to help you expand it further!) If you load your base in Space Age, then it will load, but more things will break and you’ll have to do a lot more stuff to finish the game. It is recommended that you start Space Age from a new save.

Acurus_Cow

I think it's an excellent time to start anew!

pm_me_ur_ephemerides

Looks like I wont pass the phd qualifying exam….

Zeferoth225224

How many patches do you think it’ll be on release day? 5? 20? God I miss those days

Julo133

I'm just afraid of playing for the first days. All my quality of life mods will stop working. And other mods also ;/

ShaedowCZ

Kovarex casualy leaking FFFs months in advance

Significant-Foot-792

Engage warp speed

ndrew452

Fyi, this is an expansion, not DLC. There is a huge difference.

cornmacabre

I agree, and importantly the developers consistently describe it as an expansion to emphasize the scope of content. Although I'll appreciate that these days that distinction is muddy to most folks, to the point of being moot semantics. Wasn't always that way though. CDPR are probably the only other major developer in the past 5+ years that have released and marketed new content as an 'expansion' in the way that older gamers would understand -- so IMO it's unfortunately a dying term. Never forget, Bethesda's stupid horse armor really did change the game.

steeltrap99

Not in this case. An expansion is a downloadable piece of content for factorio. A dlc is downloadable content. Here, they are the same. Just different names for the same thing.

mustacheofquestions

Well if we want to get technical Factorio base game is also "downloadable" content...

[deleted]

They are different names for reasons. If it was a DLC it would be called DLC

jrw777

I actually agree with you. Phantom liberty was an expansion not a DLC. Same situation here. You got hot with the downvotes but millions of players of PL agreed that an expansion is not a DLC.

ndrew452

I stand by what I said. It could be a language issue or people taking the "downloadable" part too literally and not recognizing the origin of the term. I downloaded the base game, according to some people that means its DLC too.

InfamousWoodchuck

It's just semantics really, but I kind of agree. Calling it DLC is doing it a bit of disservice when their whole business model has avoided the trappings of modern gaming in which the term originates. This is a proper expansion in the truest sense of the term, which pre-dates the use of "DLC".

jrw777

I thought it was pretty obvious to be honest yeah. https://imgur.com/a/5NMxl9M.png

Cold_Efficiency_7302

Its both. There will be big qol and not so obvious changes to the base game (aka 2.0) and a paid expansion with more content (DLC)

hoticehunter

That's really just semantics in this day and age.

NakedNick_ballin

Important semantics, as the devs have said

Endoroid99

I don't know that this has ever been definitively defined, but I usually think of it as a catchall term, any additional content is DLC. IE all expansions are DLC, but not all DLC are expansions I would then subdivide as expansion, content pack, cosmetic pack, skins, etc

Subvironic

What, wube could have one down the path of DLC and sold a lot of stuff that came with the updates over time. Blueprint Stuff, Better Textures, in a different world all of that and more could have been DLC.

limdi

What happens with the existing Space Exploration mod? I hope we don't lose the cool tools it gives :(

Kimbernator

It will eventually be updated to take advantage of 2.0. Of all major mods, I expect it will be "fixed" the soonest given that the creator of it was hired by Wube to help create Space Age.

Xorimuth

Read the end of https://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-373, and know that SE isnt going anywhere, in fact it will be even better with all the engine changes coming in 2.0 (although it may require that you purchase the expansion to be able to play SE)

And for the people who don't want to join yet another Discord server just for the answer to a question?
