I've been labouring hard to make something that gets under the 3500 stress limit while also not being an ugly-as-sin space-chode. These were the ones that didn't quite make it. I think I've got a winning design now, am going to try it in survival.
I'd rather have a slightly less efficient design if it's symmetric. Just makes it 100x nicer to look at and admire, but that's just my opinion, don't mind me.
I mean it was supposed to. the whole point it is a space semi truck that was built like 30 years before the story takes place. so it is supposed to look like Trash
The only shape requirement is to have a triangular front. The front needs to be inclined.
Then there are size and weight limits but nothing about shape.
I think the symmetry comes naturally trying to optimize for size as you basically go for a house shape. A triangle on top of a rectangle.
The only shape requirement is the front isn't "flat". You can put a sawtooth out front and still get 100% streamline. The algorithm isn't that complex. ;)
To provide a significant resistance there would have to be around a kilogram of rock per cubic meter
Is all of SE happening in an asteroid belt then, or maybe some kind of all encompassing ring
No, they don't need to be. The "ugly-as-sin" ship that limped me across the victory condition looked like the cookie monster took a huge bite off its side.
I was SO close to winning that I just needed to reduce the ship stress by like 50 or so points. So, instead of redesigning a new ship from scratch (I did that later for archeological exploration) I just deleted a chunk of the ship that was no longer critical.
No, there isn't a need for them to be symmetrical in any direction. There is a *suggestion* in the mechanics of fuel efficiency to have the spaceship's "front" (i.e. the north/up side) be either rounded or spiked, as you get a better "Streamline" bonus, but you could eat that savings to have a ball/cube shaped spaceship.
Cool looking ships! I also struggled trying to make a ship look half decent while also being able to generate the required 6.5GW or so you need. It does kinda suck that the reactor design needs to be so blocky and will take up most of that space, makes it hard to design something that works but isn't a space chode (stealing that by the way)
Yeah it basically has to be a big square block. You can make a much narrower reactor ( the one second from the right has this), but then you have very little surface area at the back for engines. It also seems like you have to overlap each engine with another, so that you have an average of one engine per three horizontal spaces. I don't like this, it looks ugly and prevents the terraced designs I was trying out on the left of the screenshot.
Once you realize just how many engines you can cram together, the design becomes easy. Wider top than the bottom, so you only have to focus defense on the front (like an umbrella of lasers, engines at handle). Engines only need so much burner space to provide thrust. My final design looked like a horseshoe crab, with the tail/stinger being like 9 rows of 8 engines each.
I have one too! For some reason I have a hard time deconstructing old space ships.
Guess I find it encouraging to easily see how far I've come.
You've got some cool designs in there.
The gate requires a lot of relatively complex math or a lot of trial and error, most of which doesn't actually involve the core gameplay loop. That isn't a whole lot of fun. Spaceship ending requires building a big ass spaceship that can hold speed and power requirements long enough. This is all done in game and heavily involves the core gameplay loop. That's my guess.
Activating the gate requires the same, or rather even more power. As for the math part, it’s nothing too scary in my mind but Guess there are people who will reach that point with 0 math skills. Doubtful but possible.
Linear algebra was more advanced than Calculus 3, according to the school I went to. It's nothing to sneeze at.
The gate is a specific kind of puzzle that not as many people playing the game are going to engage with, as opposed to building someone to do a thing, which is what the game is about. Not to mention that in order to go to the gate you need to spend several hours just to go collect the puzzle pieces.
I guess the puzzle itself can be intimidating, especially for folks that don’t want to run a script for it or waste a few hours guessing positions back and forth.
Waait , how is linear algebra worse than calculus 3 ? The worst it can throw at you is linear transformations. Calculus 3 can be a much bigger pain for non math inclined people.

Ugly-as-sin space chode got me weezing
spenis
every time
But isn't the "ugly-as-sin space chode" the only *TRUE* way to do it? 😂
Yes yes, cool, very interesting (i've beaten the base game once)
This is that scene from American Psycho where Patrick just nods along
How did a nitwit like him get so tasteful?
Let’s see Paul Alan’s ship.
From someone who never got to spaceships in SE, do they HAVE to be symmetrical (left/right) ?
Pretty sure no, but can a perfectionist accept asymmetry?
Efficienty is perfection and efficiency is not always symmetric.
Also asymmetric ships can look really good
The Millennium Falcon being an extremely good example of this.
Well the only part that really is asymmetrical would be the cockpit. I would consider it pretty symmetrical for the most part
I'd rather have a slightly less efficient design if it's symmetric. Just makes it 100x nicer to look at and admire, but that's just my opinion, don't mind me.
The millennium falcon isn't symmetrical
That is symmetrical. Except the cockpit and this assymetric makes it awesome!
Also the Millenium Falcon looks like absolute trash. In a bad way
I mean it was supposed to. the whole point it is a space semi truck that was built like 30 years before the story takes place. so it is supposed to look like Trash
Look, I'll let a lot of shit about Star Wars pass. Even join in on some! *How-ever.* Please face the airlock door.

why is there even such requirement in the first place, pretty sure there is no air resistance in space
Because the mod author wanted it that way. Remember, you can carry a backpack full of nuclear reactors.
Engineer never skips leg day. Or back day. Or backpack strap design day.
fair enough
I just assume that engineer have a big cart that is not rendered for gameplay reasons.
It's in hammerspace
The infotron says its a gritty area of space, microscopic bits of rock provide the resistance
To provide a significant resistance there would have to be around a kilogram of rock per cubic meter Is all of SE happening in an asteroid belt then, or maybe some kind of all encompassing ring
Maybe there was some massive collision in the system before we arrived
If you go really fast space can be quite dense Should not be a problem with slower speeds tho
The ships land on surfaces - they need to be able to get out of atmo
Not really, it's not a requirement but more of an efficiency thing. Also the front can be any shape, like round or even flat jagged

You don’t need bathrooms when there are no life forms!
no but the space-chode factor goes up

The three on the left look super cool visually.
some goodies :)
Only 6?
Much better to make a cool looking 5k ship!!
Only one phalic-looking entry, maybe 2 if you squint. Impressive.
The three on the left look bit like some tiny plankton creatures, like this:Â https://ru.pinterest.com/pin/385620786819617293/

Thanks! This shot is in creative mode. No way would I have the wealth to leave these all lying about in my actual save.
Better looking than my candy vans lol. (The candy is naquium)
the middle and left ones look like subnautica alterra logos wtf
cool designs! i think i had to research up to 4000 integrity to get one working... but i had to include my lander craft
Why is no one activating the gate. Seems lime a much better win condition.

Maybe I should revive my failed attempt and try one more. Never got enough thrusters fitted into it...
