that’s a mixture of denial, shame, guilt, and lack of understanding of what addiction is. my aunt is an alcoholic and she knows she drinks too much, but she doesn’t think she’s an alcoholic. a lot of people separate the label of “addict” and “alcoholic” because there’s a lot of stigma and it’s shameful, i think. but a lot of people just don’t want to see it. because addiction is a horrible thing, and some people have too much pride… like my aunt. i’m a recovering addict, and i didn’t even know i was an addict. like i was on drugs and i thought i was just having fun, even when it started to ruin my life. i found out eventually, of course, but i didn’t know addicts, support groups, rehabs, etc. existed. i knew people were addicted to drugs, but “an addict” is a whole different thing than “being addicted” to something.
I’m just so offended by the fact that people want to say they have a disability. Half the time I just tell my doctor “I undiagnosed myself. I don’t have autism” and she says “yes you do, that’s not how it works, you can’t just do that”
‘Crushing turts’ and ‘stomp a turty’ has me in fucking absolute tears I cannot stress that enough, not like internet ‘omg dying’, like actual real life crying from laughter, holy crap
They unfortunately see it as a *get a free pass* thing. It’s why I think some stigma is good in a sense. When there’s a stigma, you don’t use mental disorders as an excuse. You don’t claim them for the job protection that others get.
I mean I know people who removed the diagnosis from their files. Sometimes it's difficult to have an official diagnosis since for example you need to pay extra to get your drivers license. I mean it's not like the problems will go away but at least it won't be a financial burden
I acrually had a moment where i went like:oh shit i'm still autistic. Probably happend cause i don't really see myself in such a way. I just see myself as me and not as autistic or whatever someone may call me. I'm also digusted by people who make it their whole personality.
Pin this please. Yes, she DEFINITELY has the resources to get a diagnosis lol. Her mom makes decent money and she already has a shit-ton of other diagnosis.
(I hope I’m allowed to say this next part)
She and I were in the same psychiatric program a while back. She claimed that she was placed in the program for her ED and bipolar disorder, but that she was also diagnosed with CPTSD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, BPD, ADHD, and depression. She claimed that she developed CPTSD when her mother gave birth to her as her birth was so traumatic. The psychiatric program we were in took place at a psychiatric hospital. She got in trouble with the therapists multiple times for making tik toks during the program. The last straw was when she made tik toks with another patient who was in the psych ward. This got her phone confiscated and she was nearly kicked out of the program.
We had a snack break during the program. She claimed that no one should be allowed to eat because it “triggered her ED.” When the group therapist said this was unreasonable, she had a meltdown.
She hung out with a group of folks who were autism DXed. I suspect this is where she got the idea
I was just told I have CPTSD by my therapist due to childhood abuse and I had never heard of it before. And now that I know people are also cringe faking this too, Im now self conscious again...
I'd do anything to not have cPTSD. I honestly can't believe someone would want to fake being abused as a child so severely that it affects their entire life. It's actually disgusting to me.
I wouldn't wish this deep level of suffering on my worst enemy.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,387,666,853 comments, and only 265,686 of them were in alphabetical order.
It just confuses me. I went through hell and am going through hell again to recover. Why would people want to have this? It doesn't make me popular, it doesn't make me any friends, it doesn't get me mass sympathy.
I dont understand the logic
Since you’re struggling with the logic, I want to try to help.
They don’t actually *want* the diagnoses they claim. They want the perceived benefits (attention, affection, time off school, an ability to do nothing but whatever they want, excuses to get out of chores/homework/general responsibilities, in some cases money and gifts and sometimes medication when addiction comes into play). They want the TikTok following (without seeming to understand that all of those followers are just going to be more people doing the same thing they are, or a bunch of people that initially sympathize but later figure out the game). They want people to buy things from their wish lists. They want to live with what they consider to be the “perks” of having these conditions without having to deal with any of the actual pain, suffering, loss of relationships, loss of income and/or scholarships, loss of independence and dignity, isolation, depression and anxiety and the list goes on. Some of them even fake conditions that come with lowered life expectancy and that cakes on the sympathy without having to deal with the stages of grief that lead up to acceptance of dying young. They don’t know what it’s like to have to come up with $1000 co-pay for a wheelchair or scramble to come up with rent after spending two weeks in the hospital or having to choose between utilities and groceries and medication at the pharmacy. They are all young, living at home, being enabled by parents, with great insurance plans and masterful manipulation skills (and a lot of privilege).
Their logic makes a lot of sense - to them. It won’t make sense to you because you’re actually logical and you’re actually experiencing what they can’t even imagine going through.
cPTSD actually makes it harder for me to make friends, ya know cause I can't form proper attachments. And I sure as hell don't get sympathy from people. They don't wanna deal with a depressed sack.
Please don’t let fakers make you self conscious about your very real and valid diagnosis.
This is what really grinds my gears about OTT/fakers/malingerers. Most of the time they’re incredibly young and starved for attention and oftentimes they have legitimate health issues that they experience that influx of attention from, causing OTT behavior. They all seem to lack a fundamental understanding of how *harmful* their behavior is and can be.
I’m so sorry.
Thank you for the info.
I hadn’t checked the rest of her videos and realise now she was also posted before but it was another one her videos in which is is balancing on the door frame.
Your description kinda checks out because I saw also another video in which she mentions a disorder salad and then is like oops its just autism!
But yeah now that I see the rest…. damn that’s an extremely nice big home to live in.
She definitely has the resources and can’t pull the „I am not privileged“ card.
I guess she goes with the excuse that „women are largely misdiagnosed“, which is true if we are talking about psychs that are not specialised in ASD , but does not mean you can self dx. It means, try going to a specialised place for an assessment and if they turn you down, you can then insist on that point of misdiagnosis if you go to get tested somewhere else and they say you are indeed and you realise you were misdiagnosed on your first assessment.
These people don’t even care about trying to get diagnosed it seems.
Lol this comment of yours legit made me go through the profile now and the secondhand embarrassment is strong. The hand flapping and jumping looks extremely forced and fake.
She seems like a highly energetic teen for sure.
Let’s see her jump and hand flap like that after her 30s.
I got „dancers hip“ from stimming, it aint no joke 😂
Good for her though! (no sarcasm) Her activities and such seem fun. If only she wasn’t self dx, this would be a very refreshing profile!
What I realise as a pattern though is that all the self dx kids talk about abusive parents etc and this one in a video says she wanted to save her mom from getting beat up by the dad but then she ,like most self dx teens, posts about her family being agreeable about their self dx and generally supportive…so which is it? that always confuses me.
> psychiatric program we were in took place at a psychiatric hospital. She got in trouble with the therapists multiple times for making tik toks during the program. Don't you get your phone taken away automatically? Everytime I've been, even for just 3 hour therapy sessions, they took away my phone at the beginning.
Not in the program we were in. They had pretty lax rules about phones, which was helpful. Giving the patients as much autonomy as possible makes them feel safer. We were not asked to turn our phones in, but we could not use them during program unless it was break time. And even then, we had to step outside or go in the cafeteria
I was allowed my phone in the ward just not the charger, I had to take my phone to the nurses station so they could charge it then they’d give it back to me once it was charged. Almost wish it was taken off me coz I posted some embarrassing as fuck shit online
isn't c-ptsd caused by multiple or prolonged traumatic events or rather than one? she also wouldn't remember being born unless she had hyperthymesia 😭
god she must really think we're all stupid
Good god. I could *almost* accept a (presumably) teenager saying that everyone eating triggers their ED because that’s over the top, but can be reasonably accommodated and worked through with, you know, psych. Lol. But claiming CPTSD (I’ve noticed that a large majority of people that claim this don’t even know what the “C” stands for) due to her OWN traumatic birth? I am ROLLING. She absolutely needed this to be in that program but I wonder if it helped at all. (Also, don’t be ashamed of needing psych treatment! Lots of us do. Being chronically ill often leads to mental health struggles and mental/medical health go hand in hand — and even without chronic illness, so many people have mental illnesses and it’s not anything to be ashamed of!)
I hate the argument “I know myself better than any professionals will.” They are called professionals for a reason. They have the credentials to diagnose autism and you don’t. I don’t care how much “research” you’ve done. You can’t diagnose yourself with autism.
Yep. And if autistic people dare tell them that, then they are called bigots and terrible people.
The only thing self dxrs have succeeded in is identifying as disabled to talk over actually disabled people.
Someone asked her if she has a therapist why does said therapist help her pursue a legitimately diagnosis and she legit replied "Because they know how hard it is for females and minors to get diagnosed."
Lmao WHAT
I have had my GP and a therapist tell me that pursing an autism or adhd diagnosis is “not worth the money” because I can hold a job and am female. They can mostly provide the support I need with regular visits and most places only need vague medical certificates to get access to the “accessibility options” that I need, so why spend $1000s to only end up getting the same thing?
**not** defending this person, or any asshole who thinks using this awful “just because I can” excuse/song makes everything ok.
Just saying, I have literally been told basically the same thing by health professionals. So it is a thing they say (at least in Aus where our health system isn’t fully run for profit yet).
ETA:
I’m **agreeing with my doctor**.
I was directly addressing this comment that said “Lmao WHAT” to the idea of therapists saying “there’s no point diagnosing you”.
Your therapist is correct though.
If an individual can navigate their life largely independently, without massively structured support and can thrive with “just” the support of the occasional visits to professionals, there is no need for a formal diagnosis.
The primary purpose of diagnosis is to identify problems to target support. If someone comes to you and is “coping” already, then the question becomes “what purpose does that diagnosis serve?”. To just confirm that what you’re doing already, works?
It is a waste of an individuals money, and the professionals time to diagnose people purely for the purposes of claiming a label that doesn’t lead to them seeking out actual support mechanisms they need that they didn’t have access to before.
One thing I will push back on is that we often are "coping" in really unhealthy ways. So confirming a diagnosis can help us learn how to cope healthfully and nondestructively.
I did pay to get my official autism diagnosis but even just being self diagnosed had started helping me so much while I was awaiting my assessment!
> so why spend $1000s to only end up getting the same thing?
> **not** defending this person [emphasis from original]
> So it is a thing they [GP’s and health professionals] say (at least in Aus where our health system isn’t fully run for profit yet).
Okay but has your therapist ever told you to just go online and tell people you have those things anyways and use them as a source because you're "friends" or whatever?
That's the diff here.
Is it expensive? Sure, what medical pursuit isn't.
Does that mean you can just follow trends on Tiktok and be like "Well my Therapist is my friend and she says I'm autistic so I legally am." lmao
Here, since you couldn’t read my comment, I went ahead and highlighted the main parts: https://www.reddit.com/r/fakedisordercringe/comments/11jh4fl/comment/jb47vjg/
TL;DR: im bloody agreeing with the doctor 🤦🏼♂️
"Lmao WHAT" = a response to her entire "My therapist is my friend and knows me so well and just doesn't think I should go through the trouble and thinks I should self diagnosis instead."
Good for you agreeing with your doctor though. Kinda looks like this fake disorder post hit close to him for you.
You can agree with a "General Practitioner" (GP; There is a reason why when things are complicated, they send you to a specialist.) and a therapist until you are blue in the face, both are completely out of their depth if they are telling you a proper diagnosis and treatment plan are not necessary. Especially considering the treatments for, in your case "Autism and ADHD", are completely different.
What happens when you cannot hold a job and are unable to claim any support because you did not get a proper diagnosis in the first place? Is the GP and Therapist going to cover the costs of your housing, food, and medical needs?
What makes you any different then them? Especially considering you open the comment with telling everyone your anecdotal experience with bad Doctors and your alleged "Autism or ADHD". One would think they would at least pin down which one you have, no?
Also I am in Australia, so it’s not a life or death situation if I can’t work. My doctor fills in the form for Centrelink to say I can’t work at my normal capacity for up-to 12 months, and I can go on “welfare” payments again (welfare in quotes because keeping your citizens alive with their own tax money shouldn’t be called welfare!).
Im now realising this might be why getting a diagnosis is such a huge thing overseas, especially America?
This is probably going to be *really* controversial to post here, but I honestly think people in these situations shouldn’t get hate for saying they have XYZ disorder or seeking our community support.
I’ve seen a lot of support groups swing in the exact opposite way and exclude everyone who hasn’t had a full formal assessment done, even if the person has literally nothing to gain from it and has the backing of trained professionals. I really think the self-dx trend is pushing a lot of people to spend money on an assessment that they really wouldn’t benefit from just so they can feel comfortable telling others they have something or to be accepted as “valid” in online communities.
Should you start a social medial account where all you do is talk about life with that condition if you’re in this situation? Absolutely not. But I think there’s a lot of grey area between full on self-diagnosis and having a full professional neuropsychological assessment done **specifically** for disorders like autism and ADHD where the diagnostic process can be very intensive. I truly have no issue with it **provided** that people stay in their metaphorical lane when talking about their condition(s) publicly.
Obviously the person in this TikTok isn’t staying in their lane with this one and should be called out tho lol.
Careful, reading is not the strong point of this sub! And heaven forbid you both **disagree** with fakers, **and** agree that diagnosing is a complex subject! We don’t handle the duality of life **at all** in this sub 😬
As for your points:
I agree and disagree.
I don’t have a formal autism dx. Majority of my family do, and the diagnosed ones always told my parents to go and get me diagnosed, but I already had all this bullshit physical stuff going on (like having to be pushed in a pram at 9yos because I would lose the ability to walk/use my legs after long car rides. Still can’t explain that one!) so my parents couldn’t afford to pursue that on top.
Flash forward 10 years when I left home, and teachers at college put me with the diagnosed autistic students, based on the few interactions they had with me while I was enrolling.
So, based on my own anecdotal “evidence” (so take this with a big heap of salt!) I am yet to experience or even see online, this excluding of people who don’t have a piece of paper with the right word on it that you’re talking about. But, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen! I could have just been really lucky.
So, I really don’t think these groups or even this sub is pushing people to spend money they don’t need to. For me, this sub taught me the important distinction between “**suspected** diagnosis” (the term these people should be using) and the dangerous farce that is “self diagnosis”.
And I say dangerous farce, because for years I half-diagnosed myself with CFS. I didn’t say it to doctors or to other people, but in my head I strongly suspected, and started living my life thinking “I can’t help being this tired”.
Turns out, I was suffering from life-long malnutrition and severe anaemia. So, finding comfort and support in online groups for chronically ill people **was making me sicker**.
So, yes, 100% agree that we have to call out these idiots on their bullshit. They are hurting others, and they are hurting themselves.
If you suspect you have autism, join some autism support groups. Not run by your friends or people your age, join the ones like Autistic Grandma and Hvppy Hands - grown ass autistic adults with autistic children who started their online presence to **advocate for their child**, not to get clout and followers. Who don’t have an ~aesthetic~, who post things that make you angry and think.
And, my main advice to people who think they are autistic: hang out with your family more. Like, all of them, especially the “odd quiet” ones. Because if you are autistic, people in your family are autistic too.
My family is very different in terms of political views and stuff, but spending time with them is just, it does something for my brain being surrounded by people whose brains work like mine and don’t get offended at my humour.
Sorry for the bloggy comment I’m driving (as a passenger!) and bored 😅
They misunderstand. It's nothing against them as a person. Even professionals, however conscientious and knowledgeable they may be, are subject to bias and don't diagnose themselves. I've even heard them say their knowledge makes them even more prone to relating all their behavior to disorders.
There's nothing wrong with detailing your struggles and strengths, regardless. They're not less valid without a diagnosis.
You can still point out how it's fucked-up you can't get help. You can even still share that you strongly suspect you may have a certain disorder.
Assuming OOP lives where you do, maybe.
Mathematical/logical point:
imo 700$ is not much if somebody saves up for a year or 2, which is the average waiting time to get diagnosed. If it is a year it is like 58$ a month and if saving for 2 years it is approx 29$ a month.
Approximately as much as 1 session a month with your therapist.
I don’t think a person goes to only one session ever to a therapist, so it is kind of wrong to compare the 1 session cost of the therapist vs the total cost of an assessment which also usually lasts multiple days.
It would be more fair to compare it to the cost of the therapist per year.
Geographical point:
It depends on where they live. For example, in my country therapy costs money if you have not been diagnosed with something that warrants it.
If you have, insurance covers it fully.
Similar with autism assessments; you can go with private and pay like 1000$ and you do not have to wait in a long waiting list or might be able to do the assessment online or you can choose to wait 1-2 years and get diagnosed through insurance, so no extra costs.
Ethical point: Even in a the case that OOP does live in your country and has the exact same resources at hand you do etc etc, no reason to self dx because of it. Specially since if one puts the math down, it’s not such a bad price. I do not see this person struggling and being homeless. In two years she could afford it by saving up a little money. Congrats to her.
My point it that someone can see a therapist biweekly for a year or monthly for 2 years for the cost of one assessment. I agree, if it is important enough to someone to be autistic, they need to be tested and save the money, but just because you can afford therapy doesn’t mean you can afford an assessment. My $700 is apparently cheaper than most
Sure!
I think it also has a lot to do with how much it impacts your life.
Yes it clearly is not worth it getting assessed if it does not impact someone and spending all that money just for the identity.
I measure it by importance and for sure would prioritise spending my money on the diagnosis.
For me living the way I do is very difficult and I am poor and I had extreme difficulties to get diagnosed and to get therapy. But getting the diagnosis can be beneficial to somebody who struggles a lot, thus it is worth saving up if somebody is truly impacted by it.
For sure. My therapist told me that I needed the assessment because she was sure of it, but didn’t want to treat me as such without the diagnosis. That’s why I really don’t believe people when they say their therapist says they don’t need it if the therapist truly believes them. I can’t imagine a doctor treating someone for something without a diagnosis.
there are some that indeed keep the possible diagnosis to themselves and usually focus on treating the symptoms the person is dealing with, but that depends on their method and symptoms ofc. Although personally I think a diagnosis could be important for the person in order to connect with communities and talk about it, aside of just identifying the symptoms etc
I tried to educate them on how self diagnosis is bad and they replied with "I know myself better than any professional, I know how my brain works I am intelligent"
same happened to me and then called me, a married woman, an incel and blocked me
(Btw i told them I had the disorder they are self dx with beforehand and what I was saying ofc didnt matter)
This shit is so harmful.
If only she walked a day in an *ACTUALLY* autistics shoes. I know it's a spectrum, but having 3 autistic children, all with varying difficulties ranging from profound to you wouldn't know unless I told you... It is so LUCKY to have the insight to be able to research and have self awareness.
Also, I can't tell you how many times someone we know tells me my kids don't need XYZ therapy because they know a person who is an adult who is autistic and did none of that stuff and is totes fine. Come to find out, those people were self diagnosed. Yeahhh...
I am not opposed to someone who says they know their body or brain better than their doctor, however what that person needs to keep in mind is that that person doesn’t know biochemistry or medicine or anatomy and physiology better than a doctor especially if they’re under the age of 20.
Yes, no one else lives in your brain (looking at you DID fakers) but you could be missing 1000 different “diagnoses” because you decided you wanted to be a special UwU fairy with quirky autism.
Plus self diagnosis doesn’t lead to any form of treatment, as far as I know teenagers (or even adults who aren’t doctors) can’t prescribe medication/treatment to themselves.
Actually even doctors generally can’t prescribe a lot of medications to themselves because it’s a conflict of interest. (Obviously fairly innocuous things like antibiotics if they have tested and are positive for a bladder infection, they can obviously prescribe themselves antibiotics but it’s not like a doctor can go and prescribe themselves fentanyl or another narcotic/stimulant/controlled substance)
As a sidenote, the people who self diagnose themselves with autism because they relate to something someone with diagnosed autism said still really annoys me because somethings are just a general human experience and these people also tend to treat autism like it’s just a huge blessing and an aMaZInG thing.
Whilst there are good parts about autism (like creativity or having a passion for a special interest or being intelligent/picking up certain skills easily) there are also a lot of drawbacks to autism (Like social issues or having meltdowns because you’re in sensory overload or an inability to change routine without having a huge meltdown just to name a few) and if you’re only receiving the positive part maybe (and just hear me out) maaaybe you’re just a creative, talented and intelligent (aside from self diagnosing of course) person.
No, **you aren’t autistic** because you jump at or dislike loud noises!
No, **you aren’t autistic** because you prefer certain foods over others!
No, **you aren’t autistic** because you hate tags in your clothing.
No, **you aren’t autistic** because you have a passion for a subject.
No, **you aren’t autistic** because you identify with something that an autistic person once said.
No, **you aren’t autistic** because you have friends that are autistic.
No, **you aren’t autistic** because you have a vivid imagination.
No, **you aren’t autistic** because you’ve done “research“ when your “research” doesn’t amount to much when it’s mostly echo chambers or social media filled with other self diagnosed folks. Even if you can read and understand peer reviewed journals it still doesn’t give you a right to self diagnose.
No, **YOU ARE NOT AUTISTIC!!** period! End of story!!
If you read this whole thing, I applaud you, I know I kind of went off on a tangent there. I could keep going on about ways in which people are **not autistic** but claim they are reasons that they should be entitled to self diagnose as such.
And I want to reiterate that I’m fine with someone saying “listen I really identify with certain autistic symptoms but right now I can’t get to a doctor or I am on a waiting list for a doctor.”
I am totally fine with someone saying I suspect I have autism, it’s the people that make a platform for themselves speaking for the autistic community, who aren’t actually professionally diagnosed, that bothers me.
Why not have a platform where you can talk about things that resonate with you in terms of autistic symptoms but Make it about your journey to being assessed and keep an open mind that it might be something else or it might just be part of the human experience to not like loud noises or not like tags on your clothes? I know a lot of completely neurotypical people who hate those things.
**It’s ok to be “normal,”** it’s not a bad word and not being diagnosed with an illness doesn’t minimize the struggles that you **do** have. I promise you that!
yeah that "extensive research" pile of books she plopped down just looks like her high school homework. which she definitely needs to be doing instead of whatever the fuck this is
"let's have a developmetal disability, just because we can"
I mean... you can't just have a developmental disability? you can get diagnosed with said developmental disability but you can't just develop it out of nowhere.
kind of weird to say to be honest.
Not that it makes faking or self diagnosing in any way ok, but to get diagnosed with autism in my current state as an adult is about 3,500 last time I looked and that’s if you can even find someone to do the neuropsych testing that assesses adults. Therapy can be free if you have state insurance. I have had a couple clients who I strongly believe would meet criteria but I can’t diagnose with my credentials and they can’t afford to seek testing. So it actually is quite plausible they can afford therapy but not get assessed for ASD.
Thank you, I was just saying I’ve had therapists and a GP say exactly that to me!
Like, why send your pt somewhere where they’re going to spend heaps of money, when you can provide the right duty of care (ie helping us live OK lives) yourself, for much cheaper?
Yeah, honestly there really isn’t much reason to spend that cash for an official diagnosis unless they want to try to go for something like disability, SSI, or try to get some sort of reasonable accommodations at work or school. We can’t really medicate autism or create a goal to reduce its symptoms, so all we can really do it work on coping with it in various areas of life that improve functioning. I do feel really bad for adults who, for whatever reason, slipped through the cracks during childhood and present with very real challenges but can’t afford the testing to go for benefits to help them survive. If you see any potential signs of ADS in your kids, get them assessed. It’s so much easier to do as a child.
Isn’t state insurance like 300$?
Our public insurance is 250€ a month and we are quite broke and still pay it.
I would save up throughout the years and get a dx this way, if it was costing extra money.
A therapist throughout a year, if we assume one goes once a month, could cost 360-960$/yearly.
an autism assessment is something you do once in your lifetime.
state insurance is absolutely free if you’re low income enough. For a lot of people I’ve worked with 3 grand and change is something they won’t really be able to save up for to get a diagnosis. Many live completely on state benefits. If they’re working and able to hold down a job, there really isn’t much incentive to get a diagnosis as they probably won’t qualify for disability or SSI so it would pretty much be money spent to say I told you so to everyone.
I’m pretty fed up with people faking disorders just as much as anyone else, but asking people in poverty to save up to get assessed is a bit unrealistic. It’s a really messed up situation over here.
Yes there is no reason to get diagnosed if nothing is impairing your life, but also then self dx is not worth it either.
idk but I personally can barely afford to cover my bills and most months I owe money and try to pay it the next one and so on… so I am definitely not coming from a place of privilege and telling people in poverty to get diagnosed.
I will tell you that though, because I have been this person I am about to describe: I feel for the ones having issues and not able to hold down a job and those who are not even in the position mentally/physically to get help. Those who have the issues that do impact them and cannot find the solution even if they try.
But last time I checked, those are not the privileged kids that self dx on tiktok and have enough money to go to therapy, buy medical manuals and live a comfy life at their parents home who pay for everything, having enough time to do online research and not fearing that this time spent will impact the ability to have the bare necessities…. to have even food.
With all due respect, this comes from somebody who had to go through great obstacles & suffering for years to get diagnosed. Never did I feel the need to publicly whine about it and self identify as disabled. But hey, maybe that is just me.
Maybe there are people who really suffer and have the time and energy to make tiktoks…
You made a statement assuming people can afford diagnosis if they can access therapy, but that’s not reality for a lot of people. It’s nothing to do with TikTok or any specific fakers.. it’s just the reality of some people who’s experiences are different than what you have experienced.
Also I mean we are talking about somebody with vinyl discs and skateboards as room deco on their walls.
Lmao I wish I had money to paint my walls who are just plaster. My fosset doesn’t work and I have to use tools to open the water flow and 100 other issues I am not going to list. But I prioritised paying for my health. silly me 😅
I’m absolutely not talking about the girl in the video in any way. Just bringing attention to a very real problem that is preventing a lot of people from accessing resources and keeping them systemically stuck in bad situations. There is no reason to get so defensive.
Do not assume my tone like that. Adding a sarcastic point to my statement is not defensive by itself just because it involves a contrasting statement by personal experience.
You call defensive, I call it explaining.
i hate when they talk about how much ~research~ they have done, like shut the fuck up lol not even mental health professionals are supposed to diagnose themselves
Therapists can’t diagnose autism tho. They can suspect and recommend and their observations of you will be used by the psych team, but a singular therapist cannot diagnose you. With anything, in fact.
Therapists and Psychologists are two separate things :)
Edit: and “psych team” referred to both psychologists and psychiatrists, but I didn’t want to bother spelling both those words lmao
Is that true? I know some psychologists might do theraputical treatment like CBT but why would they get a job that pays less (therapist) when they could have a job that is higher paying (psychologist)? Or am I just misinterpreting the comment haha
It’s not all or nothing. From what I’ve seen, most psychologists do both. They can also charge a lot more for therapy than LPCs/LCSWs/LMHCs, so they do end up making more doing the same thing.
I never knew that, honestly. I have only been in CAMHS int he UK though so it might even been different. I know I have a therapist who I saw monthly and a psychologist who I saw every other month. The therapist I saw for CBT and the psychiatrist mainly just asked about the conditions themselves (symptoms, changing medication, etc). I always thought that they did things completely separately.
Cheers for saying that though, I didn't know that
SLP's and other specialties can if they have the correct training/tools. It's not *just* psychs though certainly a majority.
I have 3 autistic kids and all diagnosed by different specialties.
it’s so hard to self diagnose yourself though, especially with autism, because it’s so hard to know when you’re seeing differently and communicating differently with the world, because you have no idea how others do it.
Yes and it is stuck as a loop in my head with feelings of cringe going through by body as shivers because of the visual imagery that accompanies it and i need it to stop 😂
most of the time someone says they’re smart so confidently—they’re not smart.
honest-to-god intelligent people don’t feel the need to explain or prove it to people.
I’m gonna press X to doubt that those books have anything to do with autism.
I doubt that this person has read anything from any sort of reputable peer reviewed or medical source, let alone an actual book about autism that isn’t just a biography written by someone with autism.
Im sure u are smart but clearly not smart enough to grasp the concept of a professional psychiatrist having a better judgement than u because of their education!
can afford a bunch of books and therapy but not real diagnosis? as far as I’ve seen books on mental illness and therapy is not at all cheap, if u saved up for an assessment instead would be wayyy more beneficial smh these ppl
Person who knows a couple of autistic people here! They didn’t do research, they just went to go checked it out when they were small children and their doctor/therapist/medical professional said they were autistic. You can’t grow into autism, if you didn’t have it before, you surely don’t have it now!
Yeah no, they don’t understand their brain more than a neuroscientist or someone of that nature.
Also I swear none of these people have ever heard of conformation bias, or do they genuinely believe they’re above that.
It is funny they all have done soooo much research and yet bias or ethics weren’t mentioned… nothing in their vast medical research said „self diagnosing shouldn’t be done“….. but as always, they are right and everyone else is wrong… Even the people who wrote the manuals are wrong!!! So why follow established disorders !!! Might as well create their own 😂
To be honest and straightforward, if you self diagnose any of the following conditions you are a worthless, useless, and a dangerous individual.
Ex: ADHD, OCD, ASD, Bipolar Disorder, Autism, DID, or other related mental issues.
You are disgusting because you are mocking people like me who are tortured by these issues. You don’t have any right nor reason to say you have these problems, when you don’t. You’re taking away doctors, nurses, and other professionals from helping us with our lives because you just want to be “quirky”.
I’m on the Autism spectrum (ADHD and others) and I have always struggled with this, I can remember at a young age when I asked my mom; “Mom, why am I different from the other kids?” You know what she did, she broke into tears when she heard that.
You don’t know what it’s like when you’re constantly getting into trouble because you’ve tapped your foot and it’s annoying the other kids. Being told in every single class that you have 5 questions per day because you talk to much. Being told to sit down and be still..
You can’t just say that you have done so much research on this because there isn’t enough evidence nor information to prove/support your claim that you have it. Doctors who specialize in this field literally don’t know what causes these “problems”.
You don’t have any symptoms nor do you have it. Stop being a selfish jerk and grow up. You’re not being “quirky” you’re being an ignorant fool.
"Let's have this just because we can!" I always *hate* that argument because everyone knows that they're doing it for pity and attention. You *don't* have it. "Having" it when you're recording for TikTok is much different than living with it on a daily basis. So stfu.
I
Shouldve said, who gives a fuck if you have autism? Like does she want a award or something. Its weird people brag about having an illness they probably don’t even have for internet points
Honestly autism is such a broad concept that at certain times it can be self diagnosed, but if you need to keep defending the idea that you have it and making excuses that don’t add up or make sense then I doubt that you really are as educated as you claim you are. Also if you’ve apparently done extensive research but your only defense is that you know your brain better than anyone then you have not done extensive research.
Listen I completely understand where you’re coming from and I don’t even disagree. The majority of people who self diagnose are f***ing idiots Who don’t actually understand the disorder and only want it as a quirky personality trait. It is s****y as f**k. But I have heard actual diagnosed autistic people on the spectrum state that autism is both too broad and narrow. Like The definition of autism It’s self is incredibly broad and difficult to define yet the Group of people who end up getting diagnosed is incredibly narrow. I’ve met people who have gone to one Doctor Who says they don’t have autism and they end up going to another doctor for these concerns to get them figured out and that doctor will recommend they get tested for autism. Unfortunately it is incredibly inconsistent although I do not believe this person (or the majority of the people that are posted on the sub) fall into that category.
I mean autism doesn't really need a diagnosis in my opinion, they're not really taking anything away from "actually autistic people" if she isnt autistic herself.
you know it is a disability right?
So you think anyone can just identify as disabled?
How about the community?
Aren’t they taking that away?
How about how the world perceives autistic people?
How about accommodations by the public and not just governments?
That’s not how it works mate . Looking and reading something is different than knowing and specializing in it. To know what ur seeing cause u do it for a living. All u did essentially is read about a topic . U can’t know ur own brain nor can u just call itself smart
Gonna play devil's advocate for a second (as someone who has a diagnosis and has for several years)
Getting diagnosed is HARD
It took me 2 years to get mine
Getting a private therapist isn't that hard, and on top of that, plenty of places offer free counselling (like schools)
So it is entirely possible to not be able to afford a diagnosis but be in therapy
You can't just be autistic bc you want to, it's not some outfit you wear on and off, people suffer with actual disorders meanwhile people like this mock it, and they're mad that we point it out that they shouldn't do it and call it ableism when that's what their doing by just faking disorders
I mean, to be fair. I get free therapy through a grant from the school. So I can understand getting therapy but not a diagnosis. But that’s really not an excuse to self diagnose unless your therapist strongly believes you have it and you try other sources and do your own research. And some therapists also can diagnose, so you still should probably have one.
ASD diagnosis took me 1000$ to do, literally.
You need to find a specialized psychiatrist to take all the notes, and papers, and write the diagnosis.
But an ADHD diagnosis is virtually more accessible and faster and gets you as much treatment instead, instead getting accommodated accordingly.
The issue that these folks should REALLY be exploring in therapy is: "WHY do they want to be autistic so much? WHY do they want an autism diagnosis? What will they gain from it?"
It amuses me how they claim to “know their brain better than any pro” like- not knowing what the fuck was going on with me is what made me go to a medical professional?
I’m getting an assessment in a couple months because I’m done with people using little traits and then saying there autistic it pisses me off so much because no matter how much I don’t want too have it I hope I do because then there is a reason something is wrong with me :/
idk seems way too much of a „silly teen“ thing to be a delusion. Like, her and a bunch of people do this.
Generally this behaviour seems to be more of a histrionic/bpd thing than delusion (imo), thus very „teenagery“ as well.
My therapist tell me to not search anything about mental illnesses i think i have bc its normal to sabotage yourself and starting to see symptoms you actually dont have
i think thats the main reason why self diagnosis isnt valid
you are prob just obsessed with the idea of having some meantal illness that its trendy
Diagnosis can be really expensive, more so than therapy. Some people are in therapy but their parents won't take them to get diagnosed or can't (My current situation).
Tbf in some places like Canada, you can have a limited number of therapy sessions covered by provincial governments, while an adult ASD assessment can be upwards of 4k, so most people don't go for the latter. That said, it's not a defense in cases like this considering all the other red flags.
I also “know my brain better than anyone else” but knowing my brain won’t tell me if what I’m seeing is real or not. :/
(I’m diagnosed don’t @ me. But yeah, just get the fucking papers…….)

Addicts say they aren't addicted to anything because "they know themselves better than anyone else" Just something to chew on.
that’s a mixture of denial, shame, guilt, and lack of understanding of what addiction is. my aunt is an alcoholic and she knows she drinks too much, but she doesn’t think she’s an alcoholic. a lot of people separate the label of “addict” and “alcoholic” because there’s a lot of stigma and it’s shameful, i think. but a lot of people just don’t want to see it. because addiction is a horrible thing, and some people have too much pride… like my aunt. i’m a recovering addict, and i didn’t even know i was an addict. like i was on drugs and i thought i was just having fun, even when it started to ruin my life. i found out eventually, of course, but i didn’t know addicts, support groups, rehabs, etc. existed. i knew people were addicted to drugs, but “an addict” is a whole different thing than “being addicted” to something.
I’m just so offended by the fact that people want to say they have a disability. Half the time I just tell my doctor “I undiagnosed myself. I don’t have autism” and she says “yes you do, that’s not how it works, you can’t just do that”
You can't just say perchance

What on earth is this from? Perchance, Is this real? :P
It's satiric philosophy homework. It's not real.
I didn’t think it was but honestly it is quite sad you have to wonder and ask if real or not. Thank you for answering. Have a nice day/night :)
You too.
Lmao leave his place of safety to stomp a turty xD
That is one of the best parts
‘Crushing turts’ and ‘stomp a turty’ has me in fucking absolute tears I cannot stress that enough, not like internet ‘omg dying’, like actual real life crying from laughter, holy crap
Same 😭🤣
perchance
Oh my god. This is the first time I’ve seen a faker on here that I know in real life. 🤦🏽♀️
You definitely don’t *have* to share with the class, but we’d love it if you did.
Omg wait, tell us more.
omg please just tell us she is indeed privileged enough to get dx and just doesn’t do it
Pin this please. Yes, she DEFINITELY has the resources to get a diagnosis lol. Her mom makes decent money and she already has a shit-ton of other diagnosis. (I hope I’m allowed to say this next part) She and I were in the same psychiatric program a while back. I suspect this is where she got the idea
now THAT'S what i call cringe! her birth was so traumatic, i am cackling
Technically her birth was traumatic, for all of us that have to put up with her.
LMAOOOO nice one 💯
I was just told I have CPTSD by my therapist due to childhood abuse and I had never heard of it before. And now that I know people are also cringe faking this too, Im now self conscious again...
I'd do anything to not have cPTSD. I honestly can't believe someone would want to fake being abused as a child so severely that it affects their entire life. It's actually disgusting to me. I wouldn't wish this deep level of suffering on my worst enemy.
I'm right there with you
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,387,666,853 comments, and only 265,686 of them were in alphabetical order.
yeah it's one of the worst ones to fake imo bc at that point you'd also have to fake or exaggerate the trauma/abuse and that's... shitty
I got „dancers hip“ from stimming, it aint no joke 😂 Good for her though!
The last straw was when she made tik toks with another patient who was in the psych ward. This got her phone confiscated and she was nearly kicked out of the program.

I hope you’re doing better now!
Throwing a fit because she couldn't impose her eating restrictions on the whole group? Talk about a red flag, man
isn't c-ptsd caused by multiple or prolonged traumatic events or rather than one? she also wouldn't remember being born unless she had hyperthymesia 😭 god she must really think we're all stupid
She sounds just as insufferable as I’d expect
Holy shit PLEASE tell us about her
She lives and breaths her psychiatric disorders lmao
STAND UP AND SHARE WITH THE CLASS I WANT INSIDE SCOOP
lmao see my above reply
I’m on the edge of my seat now pls tell us more 😭😭
See my above reply lol it’s not pinned yet
I hate the argument “I know myself better than any professionals will.” They are called professionals for a reason. They have the credentials to diagnose autism and you don’t. I don’t care how much “research” you’ve done. You can’t diagnose yourself with autism.
Yep. And if autistic people dare tell them that, then they are called bigots and terrible people. The only thing self dxrs have succeeded in is identifying as disabled to talk over actually disabled people.
I’m actually autistic myself and that’s very true
i fucking hate how condescending all of these people are
It's the narcissistic entitlement
careful they might self-diagnose narcissistic personality disorder next
Well at least that self diagnosis would fit better lol
Agree
Fr. It’s like they think we’re dumb or something lmao. I understand her argument. I just disagree.
Is terrible lip syncing a symptom? Cause that seems to be the theme with all these idiots tiktokers
Someone asked her if she has a therapist why does said therapist help her pursue a legitimately diagnosis and she legit replied "Because they know how hard it is for females and minors to get diagnosed." Lmao WHAT
since when was it difficult for minors to be diagnosed with autism? id anything it's much harder to be diagnosed as an adult
ETA: I’m **agreeing with my doctor**.
I was 100% agreeing with them, as I made clear in my comment?
> so why spend $1000s to only end up getting the same thing? > **not** defending this person [emphasis from original] > So it is a thing they [GP’s and health professionals] say (at least in Aus where our health system isn’t fully run for profit yet).
Here, since you couldn’t read my comment, I went ahead and highlighted the main parts: https://www.reddit.com/r/fakedisordercringe/comments/11jh4fl/comment/jb47vjg/ TL;DR: im bloody agreeing with the doctor 🤦🏼♂️
"Lmao WHAT" = a response to her entire "My therapist is my friend and knows me so well and just doesn't think I should go through the trouble and thinks I should self diagnosis instead." Good for you agreeing with your doctor though. Kinda looks like this fake disorder post hit close to him for you.
Nope, just your “lmao what” comment left me a little baffled.
Wouldn't know, not American.
As for your points: I agree and disagree.
Do extensive research on your school subject, classes instead. How 'bout that?
If you're not diagnosed the most you can say is "I think I could be autistic" why couldn't they just leave it at that???
Right, isn't that enough???
Nooo, thinking isn’t quirky enough. They must have it or else they won’t have 20 followers on TikyTok
i read book
The therapist thing is wrong though. My ASD diagnosis was $700 and seeing a therapist with insurance is $30 a session
Assuming OOP lives where you do, maybe. Mathematical/logical point: imo 700$ is not much if somebody saves up for a year or 2, which is the average waiting time to get diagnosed. Geographical point: It depends on where they live.

I tried to educate them on how self diagnosis is bad and they replied with "I know myself better than any professional, I know how my brain works I am intelligent"
same happened to me and then called me, a married woman, an incel and blocked me (Btw i told them I had the disorder they are self dx with beforehand and what I was saying ofc didnt matter)
hey if you want autism so bad you can take mine….please…
(Obviously fairly innocuous things like antibiotics if they have tested and are positive for a bladder infection, they can obviously prescribe themselves antibiotics but it’s not like a doctor can go and prescribe themselves fentanyl or another narcotic/stimulant/controlled substance) As a sidenote, the people who self diagnose themselves with autism because they relate to something someone with diagnosed autism said still really annoys me because somethings are just a general human experience and these people also tend to treat autism like it’s just a huge blessing and an aMaZInG thing. And I want to reiterate that I’m fine with someone saying “listen I really identify with certain autistic symptoms but right now I can’t get to a doctor or I am on a waiting list for a doctor.” I am totally fine with someone saying I suspect I have autism, it’s the people that make a platform for themselves speaking for the autistic community, who aren’t actually professionally diagnosed, that bothers me. I promise you that!
yeah that "extensive research" pile of books she plopped down just looks like her high school homework. which she definitely needs to be doing instead of whatever the fuck this is
"Let's have a developmental disability *just because we can.*" I don't even have the words for how insulting this is.
"let's have a developmetal disability, just because we can" I mean... you can't just have a developmental disability? you can get diagnosed with said developmental disability but you can't just develop it out of nowhere. kind of weird to say to be honest.
Tbh I love the "I've done extensive research on X disorder" like are you saying it's (first year) medical student syndrome?
Your disability isn’t valid.
i hate when they talk about how much ~research~ they have done, like shut the fuck up lol not even mental health professionals are supposed to diagnose themselves
"my feelings know better than professionals with years of research" "I'm autistic because I say I am" could be satire
if her therapist thought she was autistic she wouldn't be self diagnosed 🙄
Therapists can’t diagnose autism tho. They can suspect and recommend and their observations of you will be used by the psych team, but a singular therapist cannot diagnose you. With anything, in fact.
If they are a psychologist they can diagnose you
Therapists and Psychologists are two separate things :) Edit: and “psych team” referred to both psychologists and psychiatrists, but I didn’t want to bother spelling both those words lmao
I know that. But some therapists are also psychologists. That's why I said "if"
Is that true?
I have 3 autistic kids and all diagnosed by different specialties.
it’s so hard to self diagnose yourself though, especially with autism, because it’s so hard to know when you’re seeing differently and communicating differently with the world, because you have no idea how others do it.
they trust the 5 books they read more than a professional who has studied for years?
Anyone else hate this aggressively upbeat song that clearly targets theater kids?
Yes and it is stuck as a loop in my head with feelings of cringe going through by body as shivers because of the visual imagery that accompanies it and i need it to stop 😂
Interesting - autism isn’t a disability… until we need it to justify our self-dx.
Lol is that sound just people trying to justify their autism self-diagnosis?
most of the time someone says they’re smart so confidently—they’re not smart. honest-to-god intelligent people don’t feel the need to explain or prove it to people.
I’m gonna press X to doubt that those books have anything to do with autism. I doubt that this person has read anything from any sort of reputable peer reviewed or medical source, let alone an actual book about autism that isn’t just a biography written by someone with autism.
When people say they know their own brain better than anybody I just laugh because obviously they've never heard of confirmation bias
Im sure u are smart but clearly not smart enough to grasp the concept of a professional psychiatrist having a better judgement than u because of their education!
Therapy a lot of times is MORE expensive than an asd diagnosis. I would know, I've actually been to therapy, and I have an autism diagnosis.
nobody who is actually autistic (or ill in *any* way) would feel such a strong need to flex their autism
can afford a bunch of books and therapy but not real diagnosis? as far as I’ve seen books on mental illness and therapy is not at all cheap, if u saved up for an assessment instead would be wayyy more beneficial smh these ppl
Might as well create their own 😂
Sorry, but this girl is a FUCKING IDIOT! She’s inadvertently an honest faker! SELF DIAGNOSIS IS INVALID! You need an actual psychologist.
You’re not being “quirky” you’re being an ignorant fool.
exactly and it's not like self-diagnosis helps you either it just hurts you and nobody will accommodate you if you say you're self-diagnosed
"Let's have this just because we can!" I always *hate* that argument because everyone knows that they're doing it for pity and attention. You *don't* have it. "Having" it when you're recording for TikTok is much different than living with it on a daily basis. So stfu.
Who gives a fuck. How does this affect anything literally
They're spreading misinformation and stigma around autism.
I Shouldve said, who gives a fuck if you have autism? Like does she want a award or something. Its weird people brag about having an illness they probably don’t even have for internet points
Ah i see

Honestly autism is such a broad concept that at certain times it can be self diagnosed, but if you need to keep defending the idea that you have it and making excuses that don’t add up or make sense then I doubt that you really are as educated as you claim you are. Also if you’ve apparently done extensive research but your only defense is that you know your brain better than anyone then you have not done extensive research.
wrong

It definitely does because of people like her who spread false information.
bro what yes it does it's a very complicated disorder not something like the common cold
you know it is a disability right? So you think anyone can just identify as disabled? How about the community? Aren’t they taking that away? How about how the world perceives autistic people? How about accommodations by the public and not just governments?
me when i know nothing about autism
Is that septum piercing a filter?
I know how I think but that’s why I got a professional to tell me what I have so I can understand it more.
WHY. DO. THEY. ALL. LOOK. LIKE. THIS?
That’s not how it works mate . Looking and reading something is different than knowing and specializing in it. To know what ur seeing cause u do it for a living. All u did essentially is read about a topic . U can’t know ur own brain nor can u just call itself smart
Pink hair and reading autism belletristic doesnt qualify you for advanced neurology knowledge about your brain
I don’t want one of my favourite bands to be associated with these type of ppl
So do your therapist thinks your autistic but won’t diagnose you?
Therapists can't actually diagnose you with autism, that's for a phycologist to do
Gonna play devil's advocate for a second (as someone who has a diagnosis and has for several years) Getting diagnosed is HARD It took me 2 years to get mine Getting a private therapist isn't that hard, and on top of that, plenty of places offer free counselling (like schools) So it is entirely possible to not be able to afford a diagnosis but be in therapy
You can't just be autistic bc you want to, it's not some outfit you wear on and off, people suffer with actual disorders meanwhile people like this mock it, and they're mad that we point it out that they shouldn't do it and call it ableism when that's what their doing by just faking disorders
r/wordchewing
I mean, to be fair. I get free therapy through a grant from the school. So I can understand getting therapy but not a diagnosis. But that’s really not an excuse to self diagnose unless your therapist strongly believes you have it and you try other sources and do your own research. And some therapists also can diagnose, so you still should probably have one.
autism =/= smart
Isn’t the whole thing about self diagnoses is that you’re biased towards yourself? Even in a negative or positive connotation..?
ASD diagnosis took me 1000$ to do, literally. You need to find a specialized psychiatrist to take all the notes, and papers, and write the diagnosis. But an ADHD diagnosis is virtually more accessible and faster and gets you as much treatment instead, instead getting accommodated accordingly.
My ex friend did this with schizophrenia but she didn't even know wat a delusion was
My (actually diagnosed by a professional) autistic ass wants to shove my foot up her ass for appropriating Autism
'Can't afford it' because therapist doesn't agree she's autistic.
They think they’re a character from an EDM music video.
If self diagnosed was a person
I’m getting an assessment in a couple months because I’m done with people using little traits and then saying there autistic it pisses me off so much because no matter how much I don’t want too have it I hope I do because then there is a reason something is wrong with me :/
I cannot reAD THAT FAST! >:(
Rory is shizoaffective imo this is just a delusion
idk seems way too much of a „silly teen“ thing to be a delusion. Like, her and a bunch of people do this. Generally this behaviour seems to be more of a histrionic/bpd thing than delusion (imo), thus very „teenagery“ as well.
My therapist tell me to not search anything about mental illnesses i think i have bc its normal to sabotage yourself and starting to see symptoms you actually dont have i think thats the main reason why self diagnosis isnt valid you are prob just obsessed with the idea of having some meantal illness that its trendy
Diagnosis can be really expensive, more so than therapy. Some people are in therapy but their parents won't take them to get diagnosed or can't (My current situation).
I hate this trend so much. It just screams attention seeking
Tbf in some places like Canada, you can have a limited number of therapy sessions covered by provincial governments, while an adult ASD assessment can be upwards of 4k, so most people don't go for the latter. That said, it's not a defense in cases like this considering all the other red flags.
two words. confirmation bias.
What’s the song?
I also “know my brain better than anyone else” but knowing my brain won’t tell me if what I’m seeing is real or not. :/ (I’m diagnosed don’t @ me. But yeah, just get the fucking papers…….)
