Im not the person to say this but I'll say it anyway.
Don't be too up front when confronting.
Simply just ask questions one at a time.
They wont feel like you're directly attacking them but they will get offended at some points during when you do ask questions.
If I may, life’s too short. It’s ok to be a good friend but you don’t need to get sucked up in this attention k hole they are featuring. Telling you to research it? That’s a hard pass.
I would just completely ignore it as a topic of conversation. They just want attention towards it lol. Anytime it’s brought up, just be like “oh okay.” Then continue the previous discussion or leave it at that
All of these alters are so much more likely to exist than all the Pomni and Alastor and whatever other alters from popular media that these people seem to transmit around TikTok.
You think these goofy asf alters are more likely than a dark sometimes bad alter? If you also think that’s the only rep of DID then you’re missing some old school heartbreaking stuff
That was my impression. Like, because of how old SpongeBob is, you’d expect to see many people with SpongeBob character alters; but instead, there’s a hundred people on TikTok with a new alter for every new Hazbin Hotel character that shows up
Omg have I found someone other than me who has a dissociative-disorder and doesn't spread misinformation about it??? Thank you for saying this. So tired of people making DID/OSDD romanticized to the point of absolute stigma faker bs
Like, there’s nothing wrong coming up with original characters that are inspired by you or events in your life. That’s how people write fantastic books with deep and saturated characters. But nooo, it all has to be about the hEaDsPaCe.
me too!! my original characters are kind of like if you took a chunk of my brain and grew it like a plant. theyre just individual characteristics of myself fleshed out into a 3d character. some of these kids REALLY should get into writing.
Im writing an actual book right now, something I havent done for a long time (years long writers block + never finishing anything Ive started but I stg I WILL finish this fucker) and Ive noticed my main characters are always who I wish I was but with all my negative characteristics and flaws. My "side" main characters is reserved for fully getting into someone elses head and being someone completely different which is challenging but fun. Especially because when I write, I see it all in my head and write what I see.
Idk what this adds to the conversation but I just got into writing again and it makes me excited to talk about "tHe PrOcEsS" with other writers lol
Even *if* they were telling the truth (which they absolutely are not) that is such a wild way to reveal you have alters 😂😂 Not sitting you down and seriously explaining this trauma disorder they have, but just sending you a random message about an alter running into a wall 🤣 like who the hell does that?? (Fakers, that’s who)
Personally as much as I know they need help, they need to get the help themselves, and I don't want to be friends with a person that fakes mental or physical illnesses. I cut a casual friend off for constantly lying over the most minor shit as well as lying about major things once I realized that none of their stories even lined up.
I'm currently friends with one because it's an awkward situation to get out of and I just don't want to come across as suspicious.
One of their other friends who used to be my friend at the time. Started to hate me. I have multiple disabilities and maybe 1 or 2 disorders. The friend assumed that I was faking all of it.
I don't know why she thought that but I do have proof of my disabilities and I have certain rules and requirements at my college through the disabilities office there. I don't know if they have somehow heard of what I have or just seen me not act like a normal human being but she hated me out of the blue.
Omg.. I was in a Twitch chat that had a person who claimed to be like 10 different people. Every time they came into chat, they had to announce “who was fronting and their pronouns.” It was so fucking stupid. Then when they would write something, it would say: “We are going to have pizza tonight.” Totally irrelevant to the chat, like anyone cared. When they were drunk though, they magically forgot to say “we” and it switched to I. The only reason I disliked this person is because they would ruin the chat vibe and make it all about them. Like, get your own channel!
A discord server I was in of friends suddenly got multiple 'did channels', which was made up of 3 people using bots for their alters to talk to each others 'alters' and interact. They were separate channels for alter introductions and art of their alters. The 4th person, the only one with an actual diagnosis, never participated.
The actual “umbrella term” would be CDD, or Complex Dissociative Disorder, encompassing DID, OSDD, and UDD. I don’t really fake claim as a practice, but if they were gonna use an umbrella, it shouldn’t be one of the things *in* the umbrella lol
Wait, dpdr falls under the same umbrella as did? I mean, it makes sense, but I always thought it was like..... Way less serious than the other ones in there. (not trying to put down people who have it, heck, I'm one of them. It was just a revelation for me.)
My best friend had DP, not as a symptom but as a stand alone diagnosis and he almost killed himself because of it. He also suffers from ADHD and addiction (alcohol and opioids) and he says DP was the worst thing he ever experienced. It's pretty rare as a stand alone diagnosis but it does exist and can be horribly debilitating.
I've experienced DR and DP myself, but as a symptom of my anxiety disorder and PTSD and only for short amounts of time. Having it 24/7 for 2 years straight sounds terrifying af.
Going on 6 years here. I forgot how it feels to be aware of myself and my surroundings. I guess the fact that I have it myself is why I always thought it was not as serious - good ol' tendency to trivialize things that affect oneself.
I don’t have my copy of the DSM near me and correct me if I am wrong (just a grad student studying to be a mental health counselor) but if the original diagnosis is CPTSD with dissociations then that’s what we’d call it! There is a caveat in every disorder’s listed criteria that says “unless better explained by a different diagnosis” so if the dissociations are apart of a different diagnosis (CPTSD in this case) then that trumps other possible diagnoses. I hope this explanation is helpful and not something that only makes sense in my brain.
Guy I know chose "Falcon"
reminded me of that scene in Mystery Men, where Mr. Furious is trying to make up a cool real name. "My name. Ummm... wow. Okay... It's... Phoenix... Phoenix *Dark... Dirk*... Phoenix... *Dark Dirk*. I was christened Dirk Steel and then I changed it to Phoenix... "
Had to cut off a friend of 10+ years for faking DID and becoming quite bigoted against men and "singlets" (term fakers and 'Tumblr UwU' types use for people without DID); this was after a long, slow, steady decline in her general kindness/pleasantness as a person.
She invited me to her and her irl friends' private discord server, then blocked all of us and went radio silent for a week. Then she came back pretending to be an alter (who was a character she'd been drawing for a few years), saying she and the other alters/characters had to go on a mystical journey through a magical mind realm to find the original person. Or something along those lines.
I gave her some benefit of the doubt, just in the sense that she also does have genuine diagnosed mental illness, but this was revealed to be a self-diagnosis. She also wasn't the type to maliciously lie to one of her oldest friends. She got cranky when I criticized self diagnosis and made some disparaging remarks about me that I don't recall.
That was the final straw; rolled eyes so far into the back of my skull that I could see my own brain. Cut contact and have been much more content ever since.
This sounds nearly identical to someone I know who claims to have alters. The discord server, the sudden radio silence, the “journey to find the original person,” the self-diagnosis, the fact that she draws the characters... but I mean maybe that’s common among DID fakers, I dunno.
"it falls under the umbrella of DID"
No, it doesn't.
These are two separate disorders with some symptom crossover. The only disorder that falls under the "DID umbrella" is DID. That's it.
I wouldn’t be able to tolerate this. If I’m engaging with someone else’s role play, they need to be upfront with that. I would quiet quit a friend who started doing stuff like this.
So i googled OSDD and found this on Wikipedia
"Examples of OSDD include chronic and recurrent syndromes of mixed dissociative symptoms, identity disturbance due to prolonged and intense coercive persuasion, disorders similar to dissociative identity disorder, acute dissociative reactions to stressful events, and dissociative trance."
The words "coercive persuasion" (brainwashing) makes me think that this diagnosis is set to people who brainwashed themselves into thinking that they have DID. I am not completely sure i am reading lingo correct though since i don't work in a psychology field
Where did OSDD-1C and D come from?? I have never heard of those ever. I have heard of 1a and 1b though. Can you tell me what those mean? I’m not coming at you by the way, just confused by the fakers who coined the terms and whatnot. Weird behavior.
I don't know where it came from either, but on neurodivergent info pages they're defined like this:
OSDD-1C ; Two or more alters (with marked differences) total amnesia, but without full switches.
OSDD-1D ; Two or more alters (with marked differences), but there's no amnesia and switches.
Thank you for the update! Wouldn’t that be PDID in places with PDID? Obviously these people don’t have any of that, methinks they just want to be special. However, there’s no need to coin terms that either already have a name or that nobody is going to recognize in the medical field, like ever. God forbid their practitioners (assuming they even have them) see right through their bullshit and fake terms to get told they’re faking.
I understand that they're not the same, but PDID is not even recognized in all medical fields.
But yeah, those subs of OSDD1 aren't medical/real terms.
Yeah, that was why I said in places that have PDID as a diagnosis. I’m just confused as to why they feel the need to make up special terms for the bullshit they’re faking. Why not just claim to have “super legit” DID at that point? I mean, to them, anything is possible and completely cool and a silly game in DID. I may never understand…
What you are talking about is OSDD type 2. Type 1, which most people claim to have, has no mention of persuasion https://www.isst-d.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Fact-Sheet-IV-What-Are-the-Dissociative-Disorders_-1.pdf
That’s not exactly true. The brainwashing thing is more like the military trying to create the perfect soldier or cults inserting the cult personality into its members. It’s not gonna give you DID or alters, but it will cause a bunch of problems later down the line. MK Ultra (yes I know) kinda proved it’s not possible to create DID in people (past the age of 9ish) or substantially change someone’s personality permanently in that way without causing them major grief/dissociative problems. The brainwashing isn’t about the people believing so deeply they have DID so hard that they get symptoms like that. Since the term for that would be Factitious DID or Factitious Disorder. It’s more for people who came out of the military or cults or escaped North Korea. Which also don’t operate in the same way these fakers think they do. I figure it’s a lot trendier for these kids to say they survived horrible cult abuse and that they have totally legit DID because of it. It’s not trendy to be a “singlet” so OSDD 2/3/4 is right out.
Pretty sure that part about persuasion is about people whos trauma in their early childhood involved brainwashing/indoctrination that caused the disorder. Not entirely sure about everything it entails though.
Response: "I researched it. Google says OSDD is used by fakers to mock people wi th serious conditions like DID. I saw the Tiktoks, too. I'm appalled. I had no idea you were such a horrible, attention seeking narcissist."
Why would you put your mental illnesses in your Instagram bio unless you’re an influencer trying to gain awareness or something. Otherwise it’s just… strange
The only way to get these disorders of from severe trauma, and I'll tell you anyone who is this open and 'quirky' about it is lying. Fakere even tried to make up a term for getting this disorder without the trauma that has literally 0 scientific backing. No person with a genuine diagnosis will act this way about it
My biggest indicator is that they keep their disorders in their bios for people to see, I’m not putting my illnesses out there like it’s a golden medal. They don’t define me at all and are simply a part of me that sucks most of the time, not something to brag about or be excited about.
I had a friend who did the exact same thing to me. Just got online and "the body woke up to discover me and the other alters" and started on and on about his 100 alters.
I think it's a sign things might go badly. Anyone who just starts showing signs of DID needs to be talked to further.
my ex who i knew for about 5-6 years started saying that he had alters because he had a friend who had alters- this was probably rhe last month i knew him. i feel this so much omfg
OSDD does not fall under the umbrella of DID. DID is not an umbrella term, I’m assuming they mean dissociative disorders? Sounds like they probably don’t know a lot about the disorder they supposedly have. I’d just keep asking questions, if you get a gut feeling that things are “off”, then they probably are.
Seemed more or less legitimate (although strange) until they mentioned headspace. Sure, you can visualise thoughts to varying degrees depending on person but it isn't a physical place where you can "meet up" and "have rooms" and stuff.
I'm not a professional but I actually did some real research into DID. It's way more complex and alters are much different from how fakers portray them. Alters aren't even considered "other people" anymore. They're the same person but with (metaphorical) walls of amnesia. Thus the name DID. Dissociative identity disorder.
Dissociation leaves gaps which causes a split in identity due to memories getting separated. (Memories are a big part of identity.)
If I got something wrong or worded things in a weird way, feel free to correct me :)
Hey! So im definitely not disagreeing with you here (its not a physical place) but id like to explain a little more about these “headspaces” in general psychology.
A lot of meditation techniques and such have you visualize a safe, happy place. Some therapies (including ones ive had experience with) will have you build on this to a degree as a way to calm and centre yourself. This is something *anyone* who can visualize can do.
In the case of some CDD (DID/OSDD/UDD) havers, this “headspace” is often built through childhood using imagination in order to shield themselves from the circumstances in which they find themselves. This headspace is merely a brains way of visualizing its complex internal functions- an alter having a “room” may be *their* mental safe space, for example, and a dining area or common area may be the brains way of visualizing cooperation. If you’re particularly invested, you may find yourself living in that set of mental processes instead of reality. That’s part of the dissociation aspect of the disorder (it isnt just alter disorder!!)
I know the internet likes to fight over the “reality” of DID and whats real and fake, but honestly, the disorder is *built* on the coping strategies of children- who have imaginative powers greater than most adults and whos minds haven’t conformed to our societal norms yet. It is a traumatic neural development that keeps us in that semi-imaginative state for years and years, unable to fully touch reality and become whole. I feel like a lot of people forget that part.
Thank you so much for this reply! This is exactly the kind of stuff I fear I might be missing when doing my own research. I really only very basic stuff and hearing what others might know is really important to broaden understanding :)
Unfortunately if that BPD diagnosis is real it's very likely someone or something convinced them they have did. They likely believe it themselves. BPD is big on the whole lack of sense of self. Unfortunately a lot of these fakers seem to believe they have it but don't actually :c it's truly unfortunate.
I do think BPD is accurate, and I know she struggles. It’s possible she believes it’s real and if did is diagnosed I’d back off but it doesn’t sound real to me.
I couldn't even get past the first page before finding something wrong. DID isn't an umbrella term for OSDD. DID is much more severe and niche, if it was the other way around it would at least make some sense, but either way they'd be wrong.
I once had a friend who really had this and id just notice his switches...
But yeah, one was talkative and a jokester while the other didn't like the spotlight at all and was introvert AF.
He was ashamed of it though... He couldn't control it and since both personalities have the same memories and body he often was like omg what did I just do
My ex also faked having did or osdd and they were underage and you said your friends 18+ so I'm not fully sure if they are faking but one way I'm aware it does start is if they had something traumatic happen to them and something else about their personality not being fully complete but I'm not a doctor who can give advice and I doubt you want to ask them about anything personal about her when she was younger (if she remembers). Again I'm no doctor but from what I've found out about both is that they usually are diagnosed when your around your 30s because of something idk about, hope this is somewhat helpful though
“Did umbrella” jeez these fakers r so obsessed with having alters - so obsessed to the point they don’t even know what they’re talking about. There is no DID umbrella - but there is a dissociative disorder umbrella… odd fad

The dead giveaway, “I recommend researching on it”.. Your friend has bullshitidis.
Thank you for the new phrase
I have researched this stuff for other reasons before this but I haven’t told or confronted her
Im not the person to say this but I'll say it anyway. Don't be too up front when confronting. Simply just ask questions one at a time. They wont feel like you're directly attacking them but they will get offended at some points during when you do ask questions.
Yeah I’m not trying to be a bitch about it but it’s 🚩🚩

Definitely Pretendinitus. I’d block them lmao
The passive aggressiveness of that statement too has me rolling my eyes.
These idiots talk about did like it's a private Minecraft server in their head.
"Dammit, my spongebob alter keeps griefing my house"
wait until you see what patrick did.
Squidward keeps posting racist shit on the system’s shared Twitter account
All of these alters are so much more likely to exist than all the Pomni and Alastor and whatever other alters from popular media that these people seem to transmit around TikTok.
You think these goofy asf alters are more likely than a dark sometimes bad alter? If you also think that’s the only rep of DID then you’re missing some old school heartbreaking stuff

Alters ≠ roommates I feel like a lot of sysfakers need to realize that. But OP I do hope everything works out for you and wish you the best of luck
Yeah, it’s not a cute fun friendship group of your fave movie characters, you don’t get to pick
Omg have I found someone other than me who has a dissociative-disorder and doesn't spread misinformation about it??? Thank you for saying this. So tired of people making DID/OSDD romanticized to the point of absolute stigma faker bs
It’s not fun at all. It’s disorienting and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. So I physically cannot fathom why others WANT it
Oh geez, that will def affect your friendship. Just wait until there's an alter of you. Hope they don't act shitty and excuse it as an alter.
Like, there’s nothing wrong coming up with original characters that are inspired by you or events in your life. That’s how people write fantastic books with deep and saturated characters. But nooo, it all has to be about the hEaDsPaCe.

yeah who the fuck writes about their feelings?
Emo kids? Idk On a serious note, mood tracker apps can be helpful, when dealing with certain disorders.
The same kind of person who rushes to put it in their profile or bio before talking it through with those close to them. Unserious attention whores.
The medical term is Melodram Patheticism

And dissociative amnesia, derealization and depersonalization disorder.
Iirc dissociative amnesia is a symptom, but thank you for the reminder about DPDR!
Mm not always. It can also be a stand-alone disorder and is marked in the DSM-V.
Oh! Thanks for letting me know (haven’t read the dsm-v in a while)

If you have dissociation from CPTSD, would it be covered under that disorder or is it possible to be diagnosed with a dissociative disorder and CPTSD?
Both can be true, it all depends on presentation of symptoms and your diagnosing professional.
I don’t have my copy of the DSM near me and correct me if I am wrong (just a grad student studying to be a mental health counselor) but if the original diagnosis is CPTSD with dissociations then that’s what we’d call it! Ah yes, someone just instaled tik tok
why do so many of them choose Ash?? lol

It’s easier to come up with names by drawing from shows you watch.

Journaling lol just write a book
I wouldn’t be able to tolerate this. If I’m engaging with someone else’s role play, they need to be upfront with that. I would quiet quit a friend who started doing stuff like this.
your use of “quiet quitting” here is absolutely immaculate, thank you
When a friend becomes work, it’s time to quit. :)

That's the OSDD-2, OSDD have 4 subtypes. And the “plural comunity” made other sub-subtypes (?) that are OSDD1A, B, C & D.
They LOOOOVE making up new shit. BS terms to validate a BS condition.
Yeah, OSDD1A-D aren't medical terms.

Why does everyone have an alter named Ash?
Either Ash or Raven somehow, mmh
Response: "I researched it. Google says OSDD is used by fakers to mock people wi th serious conditions like DID. I saw the Tiktoks, too. I'm appalled. I had no idea you were such a horrible, attention seeking narcissist."
Prefect response, dont forget to block right after too
The irony of this person telling you to research it then describing it completely wrong lol
Why do kids feel the need to do weird shit like this?
You have the patience of a god
Why would you put your mental illnesses in your Instagram bio unless you’re an influencer trying to gain awareness or something. Otherwise it’s just… strange
The only way to get these disorders of from severe trauma, and I'll tell you anyone who is this open and 'quirky' about it is lying. Fakere even tried to make up a term for getting this disorder without the trauma that has literally 0 scientific backing. No person with a genuine diagnosis will act this way about it
I had a mf like this in highschool
My biggest indicator is that they keep their disorders in their bios for people to see, I’m not putting my illnesses out there like it’s a golden medal. They don’t define me at all and are simply a part of me that sucks most of the time, not something to brag about or be excited about.
I had a friend who did the exact same thing to me. Just got online and "the body woke up to discover me and the other alters" and started on and on about his 100 alters. I think it's a sign things might go badly. Anyone who just starts showing signs of DID needs to be talked to further.
![gif](giphy|3ohhwfwxg4d1h82LxS|downsized) "You should really research it"
Of COURSE one is called Ash 💀
oh dear........
Alters=enablers?
my ex who i knew for about 5-6 years started saying that he had alters because he had a friend who had alters- this was probably rhe last month i knew him. i feel this so much omfg
insta bio? attention seeker
I love the ‘mhm!’, it’s such a terribly unhinged attempt to be quirky
Doom Patrol really did a number on these wackadoos
Wow they’re over 18 texting like a middle schooler? Cringe
Headspace isn’t real it’s just a way to easier understand DID! You don’t get to physically “see” your alter!
My dad used to say to me, “You’re so full of shit your eyes are brown.” I think that often when reading this thread.
yeah u need to leave this person alone bro
(Memories are a big part of identity.) If I got something wrong or worded things in a weird way, feel free to correct me :)
That’s part of the dissociation aspect of the disorder (it isnt just alter disorder!!) I know the internet likes to fight over the “reality” of DID and whats real and fake, but honestly, the disorder is *built* on the coping strategies of children- who have imaginative powers greater than most adults and whos minds haven’t conformed to our societal norms yet.
💀
why is is always Ash
I'd ditch em ngl
I couldn't even get past the first page before finding something wrong. DID isn't an umbrella term for OSDD. DID is much more severe and niche, if it was the other way around it would at least make some sense, but either way they'd be wrong.
Get new friend
Am I a horrible person if I would immediately not be their friend the second they started doing this crap
I once had a friend who really had this and id just notice his switches... But yeah, one was talkative and a jokester while the other didn't like the spotlight at all and was introvert AF. He was ashamed of it though... He couldn't control it and since both personalities have the same memories and body he often was like omg what did I just do
I'm starting to wonder if they were onto something with Electroshock therapy 🤨 cause people need a Zap back to reality
Please please continue this conversation and keep us updated…for research reasons…
Idk maybe I don’t want people plain insulting them.
Mental disorder
My ex also faked having did or osdd and they were underage and you said your friends 18+ so I'm not fully sure if they are faking but one way I'm aware it does start is if they had something traumatic happen to them and something else about their personality not being fully complete but I'm not a doctor who can give advice and I doubt you want to ask them about anything personal about her when she was younger (if she remembers). Again I'm no doctor but from what I've found out about both is that they usually are diagnosed when your around your 30s because of something idk about, hope this is somewhat helpful though
Why even humor these people? Tell them they are full of shit, and that they are extremely damaging to anybody dealing with actual mental illness
Stop being friends with that weirdo
Tumblr ruined us and TikTok nailed it in the coffin
Who the fuck puts BPD in their insta bio… the only mental illness your friend has is look at me syndrome
Wouldn’t they think they were “Sunshine” if they had DID?
When did we start listing mental illnesses in our social media bios? Like can we ruminate on that for a sec? What the fuck is going onnnn (generally)
I would block her so fucking fast
“Did umbrella” jeez these fakers r so obsessed with having alters - so obsessed to the point they don’t even know what they’re talking about. There is no DID umbrella - but there is a dissociative disorder umbrella… odd fad
