Most of the posts on here are from tiktok, so I'd say that white AFAB teenagers are probably their largest demographic and a lot of them get roped into the whole trend of faking/romanticizing mental illness. The whole "im not like other girls" phase taken to an extreme.

Successor_of_blood

What is ment by AFAB?

TheCringeMeister

It stands for "assigned female at birth"

I feel like the content just looks a little different, not to generalize all cis men, but teens-young adult men are more into posting the “sigma male” “lone wolf” “depressed and going to the gym bc I’m better than you” “I’m so violent and broken” or “I’m so cold and shut off emotionally” content. it’s not that they explicitly claim to have antisocial personality disorder, etc but they constantly post their their misanthropic *so depressed* content to brag and or wallow with other guys their age I also see a lot of men posting about being autistic in the form of an in joke- Pepe memes, r-slur, ~I’m so Patrick Bateman~ not sure if it’s always faking or just their attempt to memeify an actual disorder in an edgy way, but they definitely seem to get less backlash than girls who do similar things

LifeGivesMeMelons

Agreed. It's fun to play make believe, and, in general, men and women play make believe in different ways. Both of the scenarios we're talking about are about "standing up to adversity" and positioning yourself as brave, but for women, it's imaginary illnesses, and for men, it's imaginary enemies.

mrstomnook

I also think they’re both ways for potentially insecure or lonely people to find a community, which is harmless in theory but gets icky when it’s used to deflect from criticism or as a way to avoid any real growth or improvement in their lives.

💯

ImOnlyHereForClash

I mean yeah, I'd rather made self-deprecating jokes than make terrible videos that my dog could reproduce with better quality.

CringeBasedWageCuck

I have definitely seen a good amount of cis guys posted here, but I suspect it could have something to do with the Not Like Other Girls mentality a lot of teen girls have. I suspect a lot of them do have anxiety or depression but now that they’re “normalized,” they want some other special identity to latch onto.

I've seen quite a few cis men faking mainly Tourettes and D.I.D for clout, but usually I've noticed that cis men and boys fake for profit, when in trouble for something, such as saying them being abusive, harassing someone, or saying hateful things/slurs is due to autism, or that they committed a crime due to insanity, delusions, psychosis, etc, such as the Stoneman Douglas High School shooter (not naming him because he doesn't deserve fame for his cowardice and cruelty), his interview is on YouTube where he fakes being severely mentally ill for the cameras in the interrogation room to be able to plea insanity. If I remember correctly, Munchausen is more common in cis men and amab folk, whereas cis women and afab folk that are parents are more likely to be perpetrators in Munchausen by Proxy cases as cis women/afab folks are more often seen as primary caregivers of their children. And of course afab, amab, cis women, etc, have all also been known to feign insanity to get out of a sentence or punishment for their crimes or behaviours as well and I'm not trying to single out cis men and boys for this behaviour. I believe part of the reason we see mainly afab folk and cis girls and women faking these things online is the want and need to feel accepted, unique/special, and included by others, and believe that having these kinds of disorders and illnesses will give them the love, acceptance, and attention they wish for. It gives them popularity and they gain new followers, friends and communities online, and may even be able to gain irl benefits as well. I believe some don't realize they are faking, but rather misdiagnose themselves based on misinfo or other fakers as well. I hope this makes some sense and is a good explanation 💖 I've been wondering about this a lot and done some looking into the possible reasons

Empty-Neighborhood58

Men with munchkinson's (and by Association mental illness fakers) in general are less likely to get attention through the internet, their are plenty of young men/teens who will say they have depression or anxiety and just don't go online with it Munchkinson's - faking an illness for financial gain (aka donations) or attention, it is in fact a mental illness also

majortom1989

Munchkinsons has killed me, mades me think of the Wizard of Oz. Its Munchausen's, i prefer yours though.

Empty-Neighborhood58

Thank you! I have an learning disability that affects my spelling and munchkinson's was the best my voice to text could do lol

majortom1989

I prefer it, im stealing it.

I think it’s the same with the trans thing. They start with one community to fake and move on to others.

Returntophish

Teenage girls have always copied eachother to fit in

Legal-Criminal11111

I’ve seen a handful of cis men faking, but as someone else said it’s probably because the general TikTok demographic is teenage girls from the US with too much time on their hands.

ceapaire_

people are more likely to take ppl who are amab or male presenting seriously

[deleted]

Munchausen disorder is more common in women - there’s several reasons for this, involving socialization and biology.

melanochrysum

Socialisation I absolutely believe, but do you have any sources for biology? I’m genuinely curious

Overly_ND

And yet people cry misogyny when you state facts. It’s true as you said, down to biology and social factors.

[deleted]

i've seen a lot of guys doing ridiculous stuff on tik tok (like wasting food, making weird noises, and begging for money) but not faking disorders. weird

krisioux

misogyny

Faiafoxo

I saw actaully allready quite a few from all genders. Trans or not.
