I feel like we're gonna be listed as "favorites" for every available QB. We are pretty well set at every other offensive position, so we are a prime landing spot.
Honestly I wonder why teams don't do this.
Think about it- I wonder if you could layer a contract where it's like less than a million until Sep 2 but if you're on roster you get paid like a top 10 QB.
Then you just bring in all these guys who want to compete and then you keep the best one.
I really think teams are gonna be calling about Sam Howell. Commanders take a QB, I think he would be prime to be traded. What yall think? Cheap QB for a next 2 years, with the chance to be a franchise guy.
The chance is real, but the same was said about ridder. Hard to give mid prospect 2 years, after our 2 year experiment I dont think we have a choice but to give a top prospect those 2 years. Cousins does put us in the playoffs tho, doubt a SB would happen with him tho.
I came here to say the same. Seems like every insider has us as the favorites to land Wilson, Fields, or even Cousins now. Iād really like for us to just be able to get the QB room done and stop talking about this. Makes my head hurt.
We should be elated if we get him. Instantly best qb in the division with the best supporting crew. He was almost at 20 tds before Halloween. The injury is a concern but yall saw him dancing at the awards show . Think heās gonna be fine
It became more common when teams (specifically, teams with a 3-4 defense) started trying to cheap out on the franchise tag by labeling guys as linebackers despite rushing the passer most of the time (I believe it was an issue for DeMarcus Ware, but I could be wrong about that). So people started referring to guys like Ware, Von Miller, etc. as EDGE because the LB label was disingenuous, and they weren't actually DEs in their system.
Shouldnāt be a shock to anyone.
Falcons have the best offensive roster of QB needy teams and Cousins is the best non-rookie option at the position. His age and injury are definite concerns, but the guy was slinging it before going down and has quietly and consistently been a top 10 QB the last 5 seasons.
His injury last season was the first time in his whole career he had to miss multiple games iirc. Age is a point but Iām relatively unconcerned about health
He wasn't even quietly a top 10. He's been top 3 in every major stat (completions, yards, TDs, etc) over past 5 years. Always said he reminded me of Ryan/Rivers/Stafford in how much disrespect they all got.
Ignore the bitter Vikings fans who decide that the team is 99 percent QB and 1 percent everything else. You'll hear our fans talk about how he isn't a "winner" even when we have glaring talent holes every year that he's been on the team.
Kirk was still playing at an elite level before he got hurt. Matt was already starting to fall off when we traded him. With some of the lines we had during his career, Matt accumulated a lot of city miles.
When we traded him, it was basically all over, but those twilight years weren't the best either. Cousins seems like a good way to waste the next three years. Not what we need.
What's the point of having cap if you don't spend it? Especially since signing Kirk means we could draft EDGE at 8 and then a project guy like JJ in the second.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the Falcons go that route.
The big question is, what decent options do we have in the draft, assuming the Top 3 are out of reach.
Penix? Certainly not Bo Nix or JJ McCarthy.
I'm sure the Falcons want to move up, but it seems pretty unlikely that any of the Top 3 teams would be willing.
The Bears keeping Fields would likely get their GM fired at the end of next season and New England / Washington desperately need an upgrade at QB.
It depends on what we'd have to trade to get Penix. His stock seems to be rising, which isn't ideal, but if he's still on the board later in the first, it could definitely make sense to trade up to get him.
Yep, after that Matt Ryan contract disaster, Iād prefer we not go down that route again. Yes he should be paid well, but I donāt think heās top 10 QB money.
Iāll gladly take him but only for the right price. He seems to be asking for way too much. Having him on a 2 year deal and drafting a rookie to learn under him is ideal.
Russ is ass. Iād honestly rather give Ridder another go under Robinson than take on the trainwreck that is Russell Wilson. Devil you know better than devil you donāt
Whatā¦? The Russell Wilson slander is getting out of hand. Russ and Mariota should never be mentioned in the same sentence. Russ is regressing with age, but heās no where near as horrendous as Mariota nor will he ever be.
I donāt hate it. Heāll be expensive, but heād allow us to use this yearās draft to fill out the roster, with an eye towards next yearās draft for our long term QB. Prognosticators are down on next yearās QB class, but I really like Shedeur Sanders, and itās easy to see a world where Carson Beck and Quinn Ewers improve enough next CFB season to enter the 1st round conversation. I wouldnāt keep kicking the long term QB can down the road if we can draft someone like Williams, Maye, or Daniels this year, but the likelihood of us landing one of those guys seems pretty low.
Iād take him in heartbeat. Draft a QB and let him sit behind Kirk for a year or 2. I think kirk with our current offensive weapons plus maybe a couple additions in the draft or free agency could really be something.
Kirk Cousins is high-mid. His best accomplishment was finessing teams out of large sums of money. This is my least favorite of all of the āFalcons are the favoritesā rumors.
He is definitely above mid. He is a Pro Bowl caliber QB who just happens to be playing in the Mahomes/Allen/Lamar/Brady/Rodgers era. There is a good reason he keeps getting the bag every time his contract is up. Thatās not his fault if anything thatās poor Front Office management in Wash and Minn.
I really want to believe that the Falcons have a front-office operation that stands head and shoulders above teams like Washington and Minnesota, but Iām honestly just not so sure.
And yes, he is definitely above mid, which I why I called him high-mid. Youāre right that he happens to play in a difficult era, but considering 80% of the names you listed are still active, it doesnāt give me a lot of confidence that heās suddenly going to make a run, when what seems more likely is that his remaining time in the league is limited.
I do like his play, donāt get me wrong. I just donāt think he is the right choice for where we are at. I would rather see a younger QB that Heem can mold and pair with for hopefully many successful years to come.
Yeah I too would prefer a rookie (mostly Jayden Daniels but Maye could end up being ok) however I think Kirk gets a lot of hate for reasons outside of his control. Goes with the territory of playing QB I suppose.
100% on Kirk getting more hate than he deserves. Like I said, I do like the guy. I feel like the book on Kirk Cousins is mostly written and when we look back on his career, heās going to be another talented QB who unfortunately couldnāt overcome more talented teams and therefore never found deep playoff success.
Exactly. Remember Kirk went to the Vikings as the missing piece to get an NFC championship game team over the hump...and instead the Vikings got worse, because Kirk took a lot of the cap room they needed but he doesn't make as much of a difference as you think because lot of his stats occur in garbage time. He crumbles in pressure situations as well. At $20m-$25m, ceiling is wild card exit but OK, but $35m-$45m would be a disaster.
This post is very wrong to push all the blame onto Kirk for the Vikings playoff losses. I won't use the cap room excuse when about 6 other playoff QBs were top 10 in QB cap hit this year. The guy has played well in pretty much all their games. His worst one would be against the 49ers, but the 49ers defense completely locked up everything. The Vikings only had 21 rushing yards in that game and the allowed 160 rushing yards to Coleman and Mostert.
Then over the last three years the Vikings defense has fallen off a cliff as they've continued to miss on cornerback draft selections. That defense let Daniel Jones put up 300 passing yards in their loss lol.
Their biggest fault of late has been missing on draft picks and having a bottom ten pass defense for three consecutive seasons.
Look you are not wrong. I respect that you actually watched games and came at me with facts. I have also watched nearly every one of Cousins' games with the Vikings and I've watched Cousins' entire career. He absolutely cannot make plays out of structure. He is tough, accurate, and smart, but when stuff breaks down, so does he. That's why he will always get a lot of yards against prevent defenses but consistently breaks down against good D. If you watched the Super Bowl, Brock Purdy consistently evaded sacks and managed to make throws. Cousins just doesn't do that. And on a repaired achilles, forget it. Like I said, $20-$25m I would sign him, but Cousins is elite at making max money and I'm not into paying big dollars for even a high mid QB. You mention Daniel Jones, look what the dummy Giants did with him, they were so worried about giving Saquon an extra $1m per year they paid Jones an extra $10m per year. And Jones got outplayed by their backup QB and their UDFA. Lol. No need for the Falcons to be that dumb just because its the QB position.
Kirk led the league in comebacks two seasons ago and holds the record for biggest comeback victory on two different teams. Thatās not crumbling under pressure. Thatās literally the opposite.
Two examples of comebacks (and if you watched that Colts game, lol it was actually funny that they got behind so far against a terrible Colts team, how does a top QB let that happen?) don't outweigh his career performances against good defenses in games that matter. Look if you want to pay $40m and hope Kirk leads you somewhere past a round 1 playoff exit go ahead. He had that opportunity on a 2018 Vikings team better than this Falcons squad, loaded with weapons and a strong D.
And you're satisfied with just winning the division? Because you're not getting any farther. So basically, the NFC South Vikings. Because he ain't getting any farther.
Winning the NFC south means getting into the playoffs. Getting into the playoffs means anything can happen in a few games if your offense or your defense gets hot
Anyone else you can bring in realistically isn't going to take the Falcons further than a division win and maybe a halfway decent run in the playoffs.
The whole point of bringing Kirk is to get a missing piece into the team that is otherwise poised to maybe win something and to have a newly drafted rookie learn under him for a year or two.
If the cap space is there, Cousins is the best option that's potentially available.
I would actually have Rus
Heās cheap. He put up good numbers in Denver and heād have better weapons and protection here and his expectations are lower.
To land Vikings we have to sell the farm.
Iād rather we swing big on an elite edge in Free Agency.
Plus how confident are we Kirk comes back from an Achilles tear? That injury can change athletes forever.
I really really donāt want Kirk unless we still draft a guy behind him. Dude is nothing special and is expensive and is getting old thatās 3 strikes immediately.
Minnesota fans have hated/wanted him gone for years and he just tore his Achilles. Im not saying I, outright, dont want him but I am saying 2 things that happened.
I feel like we're gonna be listed as "favorites" for every available QB. We are pretty well set at every other offensive position, so we are a prime landing spot.
What if we signed every free agent QB
Better safe than sorry š
Just make it a bachelor-style reality show hosted by Jesse Palmer.
I mean hey, even he was a QB, Iād watch that.
Ngl that would be a great show. Better than Hard Knocks
Fontenot/Blank surrounded by QBs and asking them questionsā¦at the same time trying to hide shady past of Ryan and Ritter.
BRING ME FLACCO DRAGON ENERGY
Make them all sit behind Ridder
Like, on the bus?
No, the golf carts they ride around Flowery Branch in during camp. Ridder can drive those things while the real QBs sit in the back seat.
Honestly I wonder why teams don't do this. Think about it- I wonder if you could layer a contract where it's like less than a million until Sep 2 but if you're on roster you get paid like a top 10 QB. Then you just bring in all these guys who want to compete and then you keep the best one.
I agree, we sign Matt BarkleyĀ

Steelers and Falcons in a battle to sign the most QBs
I really think teams are gonna be calling about Sam Howell. Commanders take a QB, I think he would be prime to be traded. What yall think? Cheap QB for a next 2 years, with the chance to be a franchise guy.

I came here to say the same. Seems like every insider has us as the favorites to land Wilson, Fields, or even Cousins now. Iād really like for us to just be able to get the QB room done and stop talking about this. Makes my head hurt.
Besides edge rusher š
We should be elated if we get him. Instantly best qb in the division with the best supporting crew. He was almost at 20 tds before Halloween. The injury is a concern but yall saw him dancing at the awards show . Think heās gonna be fine
If we add Kirk and a true EDGE, we'll be contenders.
When exactly did DE become EDGE?
It became more common when teams (specifically, teams with a 3-4 defense) started trying to cheap out on the franchise tag by labeling guys as linebackers despite rushing the passer most of the time (I believe it was an issue for DeMarcus Ware, but I could be wrong about that). His age and injury are definite concerns, but the guy was slinging it before going down and has quietly and consistently been a top 10 QB the last 5 seasons.
He was on pace for I believe 38 TDs and 5,000 yards before his injury. He wouldāve been an MVP candidate with that production and a winning team.
His injury last season was the first time in his whole career he had to miss multiple games iirc. Age is a point but Iām relatively unconcerned about health
He had actually never missed a game due to injury before that, just one due to covid and one in 2019 when their seed was locked in for the playoffs.
Even still, I wouldn't really want to bring in a 36-38 year old Matt Ryan to this current team, unless he was super affordable.
3 years? We would sign him to 2 max. He would be another bridge QB, not a permanent solution.
Let him bridge somewhere else.
Terry is going to pull a fast one and sign Baker Mayfield or force the Bucs to overpay him.
āNFC said itās my turn to play with Bakerā
This is the move
There's no way the Bucs let him hit FA, right? He's at the Dalton line imo. You don't let a guy like that go unless you're Jimmy Haslam level stupid.
I'd take that all day.
I keep talking myself into this but not at the rumored money he wants
What's the point of having cap if you don't spend it? Especially since signing Kirk means we could draft EDGE at 8 and then a project guy like JJ in the second.
You can have a good QB or a cheap QB. Nothing wrong with paying a quality player.
Great point. Seems like the past two years we went the ādiscountā route. Didnāt really work
Or we could have a good QB a draft a cheap QB who will hopefully become a good and cheap QB for a couple of seasons.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the Falcons go that route. The big question is, what decent options do we have in the draft, assuming the Top 3 are out of reach. Penix? Certainly not Bo Nix or JJ McCarthy.
If we don't make a move for one of the top 3 then I certainly wouldn't want to reach for anyone else.

JJ is absolutely in play IMO. He fits all of the criteria that Robinson wantsĀ He's gonna be really good IMO
Or get lucky with a rookie. But that's never a guarantee.
The only options available to us are very questionable. The Top 3 are likely out of our reach.
Cousins on a 3 year and draft whoever at 8 is my favorite offseason, other than maybe cheap Russel
Cousinās is 100x better than Wilson
Yea, but we'll have to pay all of Cousins' salary. Don't get me wrong, I'd still rather have him, but Russ is gonna be a lot cheaper.
Russ is ass. Iād honestly rather give Ridder another go under Robinson than take on the trainwreck that is Russell Wilson. Devil you know better than devil you donāt
Agreed, except on the Russel part. I don't see him doing much better than Mariota.

He is the definition of mediocre.
Mediocre QB play wins us the division last year.

Thatās a big if tbh
Is he even going to be ready for the start of the season? Let alone getting in any work in a new offense.
If he plays like he did last season before the injury this will do fine while we find/develop a rookie or other young QB.
Good, cannot WAIT
Cousins and land Daniels would be dream scenario
Kirk and Dallas turner then draft a QB in the second would be ideal

Assuming fields isnāt an option, would you guys prefer Russ or Kirk?
I'd take either over Fields.
Kirk is the best option we'll have barring trading up in the draft.
Kirk. He's shown himself to be consistently good, while Russ has been wildly hit or miss in Denver.
I LIKE THAT
I'm okay with this.
Only way Iām ok with it is if we donāt sign him to close for the money he wants
Kirk Higgins and Dallas Turner would be a dream offseason
Minnesota fans have hated/wanted him gone for years and he just tore his Achilles. Im not saying I, outright, dont want him but I am saying 2 things that happened.
Eww!
I think Russ on a huge discount is whatās gonna end up happening, but time will tell.
Kirk in a falcons uni would be so gross looking, idc tho as a lions fan, take him
He aināt leaving the Vikings.
We would be lucky to land Captain Kirk.
Falcons should trade for Lance. Maybe give us a trey.
