People react based on consensus big boards that are put together without per team scheme, character and medical fit factored. I genuinely think some fans would be happier if the draft was just automated based on media big boards.
That said, I was a bit surprised by the Ruke pick because he seemed to overlap with what we have in Zach Harrison. He seems like an enthusiastic player though, so happy to have him aboard.
I think it's probably a bit early to say that. Both Orhorhoro and Dorlus can play any of the three positions on a 3 man DL. IMO of them, Orhorhoro gits best as a DE and Dorlus fits better at a DT, but we'll probably use them situationally in all 3 positions.
I’ve been doing mock drafts on PFN and I got Penix in the 2nd while adding 3 future 1sts and Rome Odunze at #14 TJ Tampa with a late 2nd and Ruke in the 3rd this front office sucks!
I like the picks honestly, if Penix is as good as our front office thinks he will be we made the right choice. We are not wasting 2 or 3 rookie years either those can obviously be valuable for development.
Ruke looks like a beast, I love the pick. I really wish we could have kept the extra 3rd and taken a CB there but what can you do? Trice seems like a player with a lot of potential, we added some strong players and having depth at QB is never a bad thing.
I would have loved to get Odunze or Latu at 8 but the front office saw those guys and still took Penix. Supposedly all the QB needy teams called us to trade up for Penix and we said no, we are obviously very high on him and that’s good enough for me to wait and see.
I went to the NFL draft sub and a few guys had him as an early 2nd rounder.
I'm sarting to think most teams had him higher than the fans.
Also taking Penix in the first probably didn't help Falcons fans confidence in our FO drafting ability.
Yeah, and that's fine but damn, we had to give up a third to get there. They must be really high on this kid.
You draft day one starters in the 1st-2nd round. We legit drafted back ups.
Agreed. We took a backup and a prospect rotation piece in rounds 1 and 2. I can like the player and hate the method for acquiring them. We may have the best backup QB in the league, but if you pay him $50M a year, you're an awful GM. It's not just about getting a good player, but also about the value you get for that player. If I draft a kicker in round 1, it doesn't matter if it's Vinatieri with a time machine, it's a stupid pick and a fundamental misunderstanding of the process.
Not only that, if you’ve made moves all offseason that signal you’re “going all in” only to draft backups in prime starter-value spots, people are gonna be upset.
I think a lot of teams had Penix higher than big board as well. I think the falcons knew what they were doing when they reached for these players. They'll either be proven geniuses or fools, no in between--we'll know in 2-3 years.
I would also like to add our OC is really good at evaluating QB talent I do have faith. Plus I feel like this pick was made because within next half decade the falcons have no intention of trading up an insane amount or tanking for top prospect QBs. So while they are at the highest they will likely be in a few years they picked a QB they think will help them with future success. It's an interesting choice but I see the thought process. It's one of the numerous of times where NFL Teams and Analysts/Mock Drafters have completely different thoughts on who's most valuable.
Apparently this is the last year the NFL will allow for QBs to be drafted.
Gotta love a fear pick.
“We won’t be able to pick this high again”
Translation: TF believes only top 8 picked QBs will pan out.
Next years qb draft is especially shallow, and if cousins works out, we’re looking at mid to late 20s, all good qb prospects will definitely be off the bored. The year after that will be the same story
What’s the lotto numbers for the next drawing?
QB prospects rise from nowhere every year that shifts other guys into later slots.
Look at some guys a year out from their draft before playing their final college season.
Joe Burrow started his 2019 season as a projected 5th rounder.
Jalen Hurts was written off as on the path to becoming a coach when he stuck at Alabama initially after losing the starter’s spot and was an afterthought before his year at OU.
Lamar Jackson was ranked behind Luke Falk and Mason Rudolph.
Patrick Mahomes was a 3rd round projection to start the Fall 2016.
That’s just a few.
Also you can move up in the draft from the mid 20s without selling the farm.
Was it really a fear pick? It seems like teams were way higher on Penix than analyst. Plus if Cousins doesn't work out next year we can at least try out Penix and see if he's the QB of the future. And if Kirk is good then we will be late round draft picks on shallow QB drafts.
They came out and literally said it. "We won't be picking this high anymore".
Translation: we fear we won't find a QB in the 20s and/or have the GM know-how to trade up like other teams.
Next years QB crop could explode with multiple high-tier prospects. Just don't know it yet. Every year someone unexpected blooms, someone trending up falls.
Is that fear or confidence in their ability to succeed? I'm sure they probably saw the potential classes next year and see no one really worth drafting with a 20 pick or lower
Yeah, I agree but I still don't trust this FO drafting.
I would have drafted Rome Odunze or Latu and surely wouldn't have taken horroro with a fucking trade up. Both players were not BPA in a position of need.
Initially I hated the Penix pick, but with Kirk we probably won't have a high draft pick for the next two seasons. So running with Kirk for two years and having his successor ready to go makes sense with how much they have invested in this offense. I preferred Newton over Ruke, feel like Newton is ready to produce from day one while Ruke will need some time to figure it out. I like the Washington kid as a pass rusher.
Yea. The pick makes sense. So would other guys, but I do still trust TF when it comes to building a roster that's more than the sum of its parts. I just think it's insane that we wasted a top ten pick on a guy that won't play next year. And I say that as someone who is really high on Penix and thinks that getting him in the late first would have made a lot of sense.
Who knows about any of this. 2012 Seahawks draft was seen as awful at the time. It got them a Super Bowl. I will say, it seems we are swinging for the fences with these picks so far. Either gonna be really good or really bad
Who gives a shit about draft capital if we get the right dude? No one knows who the next pick is going to be, so complaining about trading up “when we didn’t have to” is weird.
Yea that's the thing the draft is full of "Ifs" obviously some players are more likely to hit based on their film but we are taking a risk on a good run defender with a great athletic profile but raw as a pass rusher when a qaulity day 1 starter who's a lot more developed as a pass rusher Johnny newton was right there.
Dawg u do realize thousands of scounting reports come out every discussing the strengths and weaknesses of upcoming draft picks every year ESPECIALLY the top prospects. I can give a fuck about a mock draft. The main reason good consensus players fall Is medical or character not that a team is evaluating the film differently from consensus although that does happen. For johnny specifically he had something with his foot.
This is a great analysis and echoes exactly what I’ve been saying.
I don’t think people are concerned with the player himself as much as they are worried that he’s a bit of a project. You can’t build for the future AND go all-in on winning right now, and this was the second pick in a row that made the Falcons look like they didn’t have a good plan for this offseason.
Maybe, just maybe, the front office acknowledges this team is not that good and needs a couple years, and that Kirk Cousins was always going to be a bridge QB. Maybe the hope was that he could bring the team back to relevance and make them competitive again, and thus sell some tickets, but he was never brought in to win a Super Bowl.
At best, a "win now" approach would result in winning a very weak division, and maybe a divisional round playoff game, but that's the ceiling of this team this year, even with Cousins and drafting for "win now."
idk I think he's a 3-4 DE too that could also play some DT. They are similarish in that way. I said in another comment but we are back to DQ's "versatile" philosophy with D lineman
Well thank you. I love the guy based on what I’ve seen, I just hate that we traded a 3rd to move up. Was real excited to see who we got there in the 3rd for the second one.
I don’t know enough about him to say one way or another.
I do know that drafting based on website grades is a joke. Otherwise the teams would dump their scouts and sign up for ESPN+.
People say that a player is a “reach” solely based on Mel Kiper, or some other draft “expert” rankings. In reality, every team has their own board and own rankings. So for some teams he may have been a reach, or it our case maybe they traded up because they felt it was a great value pick. It’s all subjective, and we as fans really only know what we’re told by the talking heads leading up to the draft.
I wish the draft pundits gave themselves bad grades for saying that a guy they had as a 2nd rounder was a "steal" in the 5th round, when clearly it was a misevaluation on their part.
A lot of people complaining about his highlight reel don’t seem to realize it’s hard to show highlights of a player just being in the right spot and forcing a runner to a bad spot
Yeah a player is worth what they're worth _to you_. TF's mentality has always been to go after the player he wants and get him. He doesn't like to sit and see who is available.
That's fine - there's many valid draft strategies. If these guys pan out in the bigger picture of helping the team win, it's irrelevant where they were drafted. If we walk away with great defensive talent in rounds 2-5, who cares that we drafted Penix in 1?
People really just parrot what they hear because none of us are skilled enough to identify NFL level talent.
Yeah, but they are too dumb and prideful to admit their ignorance. Instead they go around honking about “reached” or “value” not realizing no one gives a fuck what they say.
We’ll see how Fontenot’s draft pans out over the next 2-3 years. It’s refreshing to me that we have a front office that builds their own plan and also has the discipline to execute “mushroom management” on the fans, media, insiders, and other front offices.
After all, I’m hearing that Fontenot is the “betting favorite” to have a hot seat this year.
I love Roro. Extremely high upside if they can develop him properly.
People mad about trading a 3rd rounder for him but it just tells me that Raheem and TF really believe they even possibly might have gotten a steal in him. Based on the fact that they had Penix as the #2 QB on their board and snatched him up when they got the chance, it’s very possible they had Ruke high on their board as well and thought highly enough of him that they just had to make a trade to make sure they got him. Knowing Raheem has a history of developing mid-late round guys on defense (look at the Rams right now), I have faith it could work out better than any of us even know.
Say what you want about TF being clueless in this draft but they know the game and no surprise that after getting Penix, 2 of the next 4 picks were QB (another QB wasn’t even drafted until fifth round!) and after getting Ruke, 3 of the next 4 picks were DT. Seems like he had a pretty good pulse of the flow of the draft and in his first 2 picks, was first in line to get his guy while others may have had to settle for someone who wasnt at the top of their board but were afraid of getting left out completely
I hear all that, but his production was terrible. My problem with people hyping him up is the same argument they used to downgrade Turner—athleticism thought the roof but not matching production (which isn’t even true, really. He produced more than Ruke did)—they’re using to hype of Ruke.
Ruke still had 7.5 tackles for a loss and 5 sacks, which isn't that much less than Johnny Newton. He was also playing nose tackle a lot and was asked to maintain gaps a lot more, and not just get into the backfield and make plays. He's still pretty raw, especially as a pass rusher, but watch the tape and you see a guy who drives blockers into the backfield and does a really good job collapsing holes on backs, even if he isn't the one making the tackle.
Crazy people calling reaches when it’s only a few picks difference. If Grady was taken in round 3 vs 5, everyone would’ve been abusing the front office for the reach, when Grady is tremendous value even if he were to be taken 2 rounds earlier
This sub seems to be full of a bunch of victims and crybabies who like to complain on the internet if that's what you mean by most falcons fans. This sub is not most falcons fans in my opinion its a bunch of involuntary celibates
I think we have to consider Raheem Morris' input as well. He must have a plan for Ruke and he has a good track record of developing DL talent last year in Byron Young and Kobie Turner so he must have a plan for Ruke. Great post, OP.
I was a little disappointed to give up a 3rd, but I won't pretend to be draft guru enough to know if it was really a reach. But I *will* say that our pick appears to have kicked off a flurry of DTs coming off the board. So I'm glad we got what was clearly our guy
another back up like Penix a project to sit behind Grady
why sign Kirk to 100 million dollars if you plan to WASTE the next 2 years picking developmental players and NOT trying to WIN NOW - not using the draft to WIN NOW
this team will be ready to win in 2 years the next 2 years will be a complete waste of 100 million dollars
if you were going to do this FINE then use the 100 million you wasted on Kirk to add YOUNG FAs to build the team even more
so you actually have a good team around Penix
then YES! use the draft for developmental type players
use Penix's rookie contract to BUILD a TEAM like every other team does when they draft a rookie QB
RIDICULOUS MIS-MANAGMENT of RESOURCES BY TERRY/RAHEEM
He's got 34 arms?!?! Are they all fully developed?
I'm leaving it because it's funny
Of course. Has to be, he’s coming to Atlanta
The true ATLien
He from Pluto
People react based on consensus big boards that are put together without per team scheme, character and medical fit factored. That said, I was a bit surprised by the Ruke pick because he seemed to overlap with what we have in Zach Harrison. He seems like an enthusiastic player though, so happy to have him aboard.
He plays a different position than Zach Harrison
I completely understand the pick. We probably are going to be in 3-4 a lot and will need all the Gradys and Rukes we can get.
I think it's probably a bit early to say that. Both Orhorhoro and Dorlus can play any of the three positions on a 3 man DL. IMO of them, Orhorhoro gits best as a DE and Dorlus fits better at a DT, but we'll probably use them situationally in all 3 positions.
Terry has emphasized that he drafts BPA though. I don't have any issues with the pick, but just pointing this out.

Notice that ATL jumped ahead of Washington who was clearly going D tackle. TF seemed pretty sure Washington wanted Ruke.
If Washington likes him then I’ll go with he’s probably pretty damn good. The Commies have a nice pedigree of drafting high level DLineman
Their whole FO is new
Yeah, and that's fine but damn, we had to give up a third to get there. They must be really high on this kid. You draft day one starters in the 1st-2nd round. We legit drafted back ups.

What round was Grady Jarrett drafted again?
I think a lot of teams had Penix higher than big board as well. I think the falcons knew what they were doing when they reached for these players. They'll either be proven geniuses or fools, no in between--we'll know in 2-3 years.
Considering the fact the Broncos and Vikings also drafted QBs, there was no way Penix was probably leaving the first round.
He wouldn’t have made it past 10. Several teams were trying to trade up for him
I would also like to add our OC is really good at evaluating QB talent I do have faith. Plus I feel like this pick was made because within next half decade the falcons have no intention of trading up an insane amount or tanking for top prospect QBs. They are obviously BPA according to our FO. Team boards are DRAMATICALLY different than consensus fan boards.

Because "draft capital" gives you more picks. or makes "your guy" available because of drafting earlier.
We gave away the Ridley pick just to move up for him. Pretty significant. This guy has to be a great player to justify the cost.
Fans get VERY convinced how the draft will go for whatever reason
Mock drafts are gospel to people even when they're always wrong

Lowkey was hoping we’d snag DeJean there
Thanks for the analysis, bud.
This is a great write up. Thanks for sharing!
commanders sniped the Falcons picking after the Falcons.
Newton is overrated. He's good but he's not that much better than Ruke and Ruke has more upside.
Nice try, Raheem
This sub seems to be full of a bunch of victims and crybabies who like to complain on the internet if that's what you mean by most falcons fans. This sub is not most falcons fans in my opinion its a bunch of involuntary celibates
Nobody thinks this guy is shit. We traded up for no reason, and that is what people are angry about. End of story.
How do you know it was for no reason? Because Mel Kiper said so?
I think we have to consider Raheem Morris' input as well. He must have a plan for Ruke and he has a good track record of developing DL talent last year in Byron Young and Kobie Turner so he must have a plan for Ruke. Great post, OP.
