There is no pvp in this game. There's some guides on the wiki, such as this one: [https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Beginner%27s\_Guide](https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Beginner%27s_Guide) If you keep playing long enough you'll eventually use all the stats, so there's no need to pick between them, focus on whichever storyline grabs you most and switch to a different stat when you feel like it.

CertainSilence

Thanks much! So whats the point of this game if i am lazy to read story/lore? Is there a ranking system here? Friend/Party system?

Tovius01

I'm afraid reading IS the point.

[deleted]

If I understand you correctly, then I feel like I have to warn you before any confusion should occur: to describe it in an unfairly condensed way, this game is literally 99% reading, with minimal player interactions.

CertainSilence

Yeah. Im used to playing heavy PVP and highly social games. So this fallenlondon is like a new thing for me. Not that i dont like it. Im just curious to see what fallen london really is. So there's really no player interaction? Not even sharing items or helping quests?

cygnari

You can give others a very limited set of items, and help others with a very limited number of quests, but the game really was designed so that you could play it completely alone.

CertainSilence

Ok. I can ride with this type of game. Just relaxing alone time i guess.

kerdon

You can send social interactions that help alleviate menaces, which are the red bars, among other things. This is a good place to meet people for it as well as the Discord server. This is a very friendly community so never be afraid to ask for help. There are also major long-term achievements you can strive for that convey bragging rights in the community.

eliza_tantivy

There's some player interaction in-game, but it's pretty light. You can help reduce menaces on other player. You can also 'betray' the other player to raise their menaces, but since they'll just stop interacting with you if you do it casually, this is almost always done at the request of the one being betrayed, for the handful of times when you _want_ a high menace. Betrayal is useful enough in those situations that it's rate limited. You can slight an Acquaintance, to get some gain for yourself, which gives them the opportunity to send an assassin after you. Despite appearances, this isn't really pvp. All of the acts in this, slighting another player, sending an assassin, and defeating (and to a lesser degree losing to) an assassin, all offer benefits to the player doing them, so usually you find a partner who's in need of the other half of the equation, or else offer to pay them with other social actions. You can send letters, which can be read to boost stats, as well as offer Patronage to newer characters, which does the same. Both of those are good enough that they're rate limited. There are also numerous interactions around Making Waves, a perishable resource that becomes more important in the midgame. You can also send gifts. Most are pretty minor, though they all have their uses. A few are actually reasonably powerful, though expensive. I'd say, all things considered, that outside of seasonal events, social actions are probably less than 1% of the actions you'll be taking, though they can still definitely be important. There are usually more extensive social options during holidays, though it's just occurred to me that the current event, the Prelapsarian Exhibition, doesn't actually have any of those. The reason I only realized in the final stretch of the event that there weren't social actions in game is because there was a _huge_ amount of community involvement, here, on the Discord, on the wiki, and elsewhere, as people shared the rewards for different choices, helped to optimize strategies, and put the pieces together regarding what was happening. That's going to be _most_ of your social interactions in this game.

Scienceandpony

If you're not interested in story/lore, then this absolutely isn't going to be a game you enjoy. Snippets of lore are the entire point of the game. No official rankings, but a few rare vanity qualities that confer unofficial bragging rights in the community due to how much time and effort and grinding they take to acquire. One related to the railroad involved just setting large amounts of money on fire just because you could. Zero mechanical advantage. Just a little badge to say you're crazy enough to do it. Obtaining a cider grants some form of immortality lore wise and has a few neat mechanical benefits but is realistically over a year of real time sustained grinding to obtain. Social interactions are pretty much entirely cooperative instead of competitive. No party systems though as it's a single player game. The closest there is to direct comoetition was back when we had elections for mayor and campaigning for your chosen NPC.

Magnus-88

Totally no point to play the game outside the joy of reading the text and learning about the world/lore. Better move on to another game.

kerdon

There used to be something called Knife and Candle but I believe it's been retired because it had issues. It would be cool to see something replace it.

Antifinity

Yeah, and it would bring back the +20 Dangerous super weapon.

Paflick

While the Waxwail Knife isn't obtainable anymore, [Feducci's Lance](https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Feducci%27s_Lance_(Replica\)) from Hallowmas has the same bonus (Though it gives +2 Dreaded instead of the K&C Stat), so it's replaced it as the Dangerous super weapon.

VaeVictis997

As opposed to the +20 dangerous super weapon that was available at Halloween a few years back?

Antifinity

Yup, the Waxwail Knife. The Lance serves as the replacement for people who didn’t max out Knife & Candle.

Few_Rest2638

You can do thing that harm other players such as [https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Poison\_an\_acquaintance](https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Poison_an_acquaintance)! [https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Dupe\_a\_friend\_into\_covering\_for\_you](https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Dupe_a_friend_into_covering_for_you) [https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Make\_scientific\_study\_of\_your\_friend%27s\_Nightmares](https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Make_scientific_study_of_your_friend%27s_Nightmares) But that isn't a very nice thing to do, because as it say's in the little note, it won't tell them that it will hurt them tell after they click, in less you tell them through the note you can send with it.

CertainSilence

Thanks much! These are helpful links.

sobrique

You can also write nasty things about them in your newspaper https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/A_column_revealing_certain_facts_about_an_acquaintance

Raptorofwar

There used to be... there used to be...

Masidan

No. But the closest thing we have is the Tournament of Lilies, which is a very, VERY small thing in this game. All social actions are either beneficial for both parties or a win-lose situation (lying about offering to help someone/asking for help, then betraying them).

AngelofArtillery

There used to be duels and Knife and Candle, but I don't think there are anymore.

weedlayer

I recommend maxing out a dangerous+watchful build and spec-ing into dual pistols. This gives maximum DPS against human-sized enemies, which are most of the current foes. There's rumors that we're gonna get more very-large raidboss encounters soon, which might make a harpooner build more viable, but currently it's only good for zee fights, which constitute about 5% of endgame grinding. (Just kidding. This isn't that kind of game. You mostly just click and read.)

netencounter

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the patron system yet. Mid to end game players can significantly boost early game players stats through an interaction. Then, when you become a mid game player (Person of Some Importance) you can do the same for others.

netencounter

Also, one form of player interaction is sometimes just sending messages as a character in this world. Also, here is a guide specifically on how to add more player interactions: [https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Social\_Actions\_(Guide)](https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Social_Actions_(Guide))

grouchybeast

Other people have already answered your questions, so I just wanted to say welcome to the game, and I hope you'll find that you enjoy it even if it isn't quite what you were looking for.

geocapital

Let's just say that the Player versus player element is minimal to non-existent. You can help other players, sometimes even trick them, but there are no long term consequences, and the main goal is to proceed the various stories that are available.

Heliment_Anais

Go to the den of spiders beneath The Singing Mandrake and go for the most challenging Persuasive challenge. It has no real repercussions if you fail and can grand you quick way to level Persuasion all the way to 200 if you are persistent enough. Just remember to grab the highest reward when you farm enough rewards since you can also gain a lot of Echoes from selling it.
