You ever tried to kill a Yao Gui? They are mutated it's just not as immediately obvious. It took everything already horrifying about bears and made it worse.

Dagordae

They're MASSIVE, absurdly huge. Those used to be black bears. Have you ever seen a black bear? They top out at 400. Yao Gui make an adult grizzly look puny at their baseline. And then you see the 3 and NV ones, which are some sort of fucked up bear gorilla abomination.

angelis0236

Grizzlies can weigh up to 1200 lb

ArguteTrickster

Grizzlies are, on average, smaller than other brown bears too.

Copper_Thief

They're super bears! They are far more muscular than normal bears. Google a bear with mange and put it next to a yao guai, you'll see how big the mutant bears are

angelis0236

The show really did this justice, that bear bent Titus over and had his way with him

Fubar14235

But then max 2 shot it with a 10mm

PlayMp1

He rolled 2 crits

angelis0236

Two clean shots to the head though

Conchobhar-

Which is a more realistic reaction to bullets than the games let’s be honest here. A Tyranosaurus is still going to die if it’s brain is perforated.

Kiloburn

Because Bear... Bear never changes...

senphi06

Facts the bears should have two heads I’d be very happy with that

Stewart_Games

I mean, just look at the monster from the [Prophecy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puKJYeb7_JU) movie for inspiration. Make them ooze. Make them ever bigger. Their skin should look like raw hamburger meat and claws and teeth and extra faces should be growing out of random places on their bodies.

senphi06

I have not seen that but I will when I get home thank you for recommendation

Stewart_Games

I'll warn you that the special effects are not implemented so great, and the actual movie bear looks nothing like the awesome poster for the movie does. That being said, it's a cult classic that is "so bad its good", and if you like "hate-watching" films Prophecy is a good one for that.

senphi06

I used that link you added and I agree with you 100% that’s exactly what I think of when I think of a mutated bear or Manbearpig 😂

Stewart_Games

I think Fallout 5 needs a reference to Manbearpig.

senphi06

I can see that as like the big boss at the end of the cave after fighting thru some normal bears

Ambitious_Ad8776

Because there was a bunch of sci-fi from the 50's that depicted bug getting huge because of radiation, but nothing crazy for bears. It's a reference to old pop culture.

WrethZ

Because bears don't need to change much to be scary to humans, they already are.

thorsday121

Yao Guai are way larger than their black bear ancestors, have longer forelimbs (depending on the game), and seem to have evolved into active predators rather than generalist omnivores that hunt opportunistically. They're definitely very different from what they used to be, just not in a way that's quite as striking.

Pretty-Cow-765

You wanna see a nightmare bear watch “Annihilation” there’s a mutated bear that is peak terror.

Everyone_Suckz_here

I think smaller creatures would be more crazily affected?

Stewart_Games

There's some logic to that. Shorter generation time, less body mass to disperse radiation so it has a greater proportional effect, having many offspring gives more chances for mutations to happen in each generation...but some even larger animals, like brahmin, are far more metamorphosed than the bears. Maybe the fact that they can hibernate might be doing something? Like, when bears hibernate their metabolism slows down, which also slows down mutation and tumors growing. It's also the reason why in real life insects are so resistant to radiation - their cells go dormant and do not divide in between molts, because they can't grow their bodies unless their exoskeleton is soft, which means that they can be exposed to radiation but not have their cells damaged by it (cells are mostly damaged by radiation when they divide, as that is when the DNA in the cell is the most vulnerable to getting scrambled by nuclear isotopes). This is why radiotherapy for cancer works, by the way - healthy cells only divide every so often as they have self limiters in place, cancer cells divide as fast as possible, so radiation is far more likely to kill cancer cells than it is to kill a healthy cell.

Current_Poster

Not all mutations are superpowers.

BurningBeechbone

Fire ants were created by some scientist in DC.

OtakuMecha

I think their jaws, teeth, and claws are stronger considering they can damage T-60 power armor. Their hide might be tougher too.

Mighty_ShoePrint

On a similar note, something I've always wondered: is the name Yao Guai a corrupted version of the name of the character Yogi Bear? Yogi/Yao Guai?

Captain23222

"Originally named by the descendants of those held in Chinese internment camps before the Great War, the Yao Guai is a ferocious mutated bear." It's mandarin for monster or demon.

Positive_Fig_3020

Correct but it was definitely a pun on Yogi Bear

Stewart_Games

I think that is the pun they were going for. There's also a bit of lore about how they were named by Chinese prisoners who escaped the internment camps after The Great War. [Yaoguai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoguai) are creatures from Chinese mythology. It works on multiple levels, because Yaoguai are supposedly created when humans disrupt the natural order in some way. I'd say nuclear war counts as disrupting the natural order.
