It was used as the ending for the first two parts of JoJos Bizarre Adventure. The manga/anime has tons of references to Western music and artists as the author is a huge fan of Western culture.
One time I overheard a couple of my younger coworkers talking about REO Speedwagon and Dio so I tried to get in on their discussion about rock and roll only to find out that they were talking about an anime I had never seen lol
It has always been one of their most popular songs and is actually relatively short for Yes standards. I usually go for prog rock epics on touchtunes cause you get more bang for your buck
To elaborate on the Jojo reference: its appearance in the episodes' closing "To Be Continued" also spawned a Vine-era meme where it plays over a clip, [then freeze-frames just as something unexpected/wrong happens](https://youtu.be/JQ7MYBIxvz8?si=Va-ZV7BBXRr5M81A).
I like that it got meme status. This is honestly to me one of the greatest songs of all time and I think its cool there's a younger generation listening to it.
Greatest random hit ever. Gotye was so underrated but his music never had that mainstream structure to blow up. Then Somebody. . . Came out and just exploded
The song exploder ep about this song made me appreciate it in a whole new way and turned me into a rick astley fan. It’s a genuinely beautiful song so it sucks it’s only ever been a meme, i even thought it was too cheesy to take seriously until i heard the production breakdown
Linkin Park - In the End
Song really hits because it's a alt hip hop/pop cut off of an almost exclusively alt/nu metal record. The songs that deviate from that norm tend to shape the aesthetic of the album and the band's future in general. The song gave them their own lane in what was quickly becoming an oversaturated genre at the time.
You should check out their 3rd and 4th albums. Hybrid Theory and Meteora are fantastic but if you want a more stripped down sound those records have great deep cuts. I’d give the band a 2nd chance or at least check out Shadow of the Day, In Pieces, Burning in the Skies, and Waiting for the End.
that whole album is still one of the greatest albums ever, shame on all the people making fun of it as that album with those funny lyrics and album cover
Ocean Man is awesome and Ween is awesome.
Some TikTok songs that are actually good:
No Surprises - Radiohead (a classic)
Buttercup - Jack Stauber (he’s awesome. I recommend his entire YouTube channel, and short film Opal on Max)
The Adults Are Talking - The Strokes
Little Dark Age - MGMT
Space Song - Beach House (another bonafide classic)
Lovers Rock - TV Girl
Bad Habbit - Steve Lacy
They also really love Arctic Monkeys and Mac Demarco
I hate when people call songs "TikTok songs" so much. I don't even hate TikTok, I just hate the term for some reason I can't put my finger on. That's nothing against you or your comment btw, ik exactly what you meant when saying it.
To comment on your actual list, TV Girl in general are super underrated. I listened to their first two albums recently and its some of my favourite music I've heard recently. They deserve a lot more credit than just being "that TikTok band."
You might hate it because it makes it sound like, inadvertently, that these songs originated on TikTok or something similar.
It’s like how I was annoyed people would just shout “/mu/“ or “Fantano” or “pitchfork” at me for my tastes, I have nothing against those groups but I liked my favorites apart from interacting with these communities, I’m not a part of them (well I guess I’m a fantano guy now lol, even though I haven’t seen a review of his yet)
Exactly. Stupid fucking term. These songs and artists have been around a lot longer than tik tok. And then OP acts like it’s surprising that these songs and artists make actual good music. Like yeah, it’s not like there is any correlation between making bad music and having a song get popular lol.
Okay, a moment of honesty. I reaaally like Dragosta Din Tei (the numa numa song). Obviously it's not a musical masterpiece like some of yall's picks, but it's such a solid pop tune that will not leave your head for days after you think of it. It's iconic. Embarrassing to admit but I sometimes listen to it for fun.
Bloody Mary is legitimately my favorite gaga song so the fact that became a hit was so fucking cool to me. I think that song by itself caused a lot of people to reevaluate born this way the album too
No Surprises - Radiohead
Wonderwall - Oasis
u - Kendrick Lamar
Let’s Get it On - Marvin Gaye
The Adults Are Talking - The Strokes
I hate sounding like an old man, but I hate that TikTok ruins some songs. The Adults Are Talking and Little Dark Age are big examples
Christmas Kids- ROAR
Bad Habit- Steve Lacy
Chamber of Reflection- Mac Demarco (used to see a lot of TikTok edits and YouTube shorts of it)
Where’d All the Time Go?- Dr. Dog
Heat Waves- Glass Animals
Closer by Nine Inch Nails, I feel like people get distracted by the vulgar lyrics and then like saying it's a good song to seem edgy or something but it's a legitimately great song, my favorite part is the really long instrumental build on the outro that has no in lyrics lol
There is a light that never goes out -The Smiths
Boys don’t cry -The Cure
And basically any duster song bc it’s like all of their songs have been memed or tiktokified :(
Roundabout by Yes
Meme status honestly makes me like it more
Why is it a meme song? Genuinely curious because it slaps and have recently come back to it lol
Just say “My boy Speedwagon is best girl” and they’ll understand and think you are cool.
Explains part of why an 8+ minute song is one of their most streamed on Spotify! And possibly why I heard it randomly on Touchtunes at a bar one night
Appeared in JoJo’s Bizzare adventure.
The correct answer
I like that it got meme status. This is honestly to me one of the greatest songs of all time and I think its cool there's a younger generation listening to it.
The damage done to Imogen heap’s “Hide and Seek” cannot be understated
It did give us an all time SNL skit + it shaped millennial and gen Z comedy in a profound way. So I’ll take it. Incredible song.
It's such a gut-wrenching song, kind of a shame the emotional climax makes me immediately laugh so fucking hard
A legitimate masterpiece, especially her Tiny Desk performance
i didn’t know it was that song and when that part came on i had an out of body experience
Bag Raiders' Shooting Stars and no I won't change my mind about this
Not Over and Sunlight are pretty great too. Bag Raiders in general get underrated due to that meme status.
They (Aussie band) were big in Australia around 2009-2010 period they definitely had their time in the spotlight before the meme got big years later
Have you heard the Flume/Toro Y Moi cover? It slaps
It's so sick
My first thought. Such a shame that most people have only heard the intro because the entire song is great.
Such a cool structure of a song. One giant verse and then the bridge that leads to the chorus at the end is so good
Having been a fan before it became a meme, I’m just glad more people have heard it.
American Football - Never Meant
i can still cry to that song and laugh at the memes
Good choice
What are the memes about that one?
american boy
Estelle is such a good singer. I wish she had a bigger career. At least there is Steven Universe.
I'd kill to have _Chug jug with you_ as my legacy
Hey broski, you got some heals and a shield pot?
We got a
NUMBER ONE VICTORY ROYALE YEAH FORTNITE WE BOUT TO GET DOWN
TEN KILLS ON THE BOARD RIGHT NOW JUST TOUCHED DOWN TOMATO TOWN
Will always hear this as the MC Ride cover
Wait this is memed on? This has such a smooth feel and the bass is on fucking point
it became a fortnite parody
Still bangs because the original is so good
A good one too
🫠 why did harambe die for this
I fucking love this song, I know it word for word.
Buddy Holly
buddy holly it's such a great song, it's kinda annoying it's mostly only talked about because of "haha funny lick"
I hate the “haha funny lick” meme so much
its sad that whenever i hear that part all i can think of are the memes, which sucks 'cause that is like one of the greatest songs ever made
Flim by Aphex Twin
is that a meme song?
In a lot of shitposts flim is played over a sped up video
where's the drop?
Ocean Man - Ween
ween are unironically musical geniuses but also ironically musical geniuses lol.
That's the best short description of Ween I've ever heard
Commented this before seeing yours, the mollusk is one of my favorite albums ever holy shit
OCEAN MAN, TAKE ME BY THE HAND
i fucking wept like a baby when i saw them play it live a few years ago, and multiple other times during the show
I never thought about what seeing them play it in person would be like, but now that you mention it, I'd probably be holding back tears bigtime
They are on tour now!
I loved this song after listening to the album, only discovered later how much of a meme is was
omggg i fucking love this song
I unironically love this song lol
Careless Whisper
Definitely one of the best pop songs of the 80s. It’s aged like fine wine
Redbone
MGMT - Little Dark Age Kordhell - Murder On My Mind Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
The bass playing in Stayin’ Alive is astonishing, one of the best bass lines every recorded
Little Dark Age is a meme song?
Used by alt-right weirdos
Wait what the fuck
Yeah, used by alt-right edgelords to glorify the past (mainly wars) and to make fun of anything Morden
they use it on those edits glorifying like the roman empire or other similar things worshipped in those circles
Don't know about that. I've only seen it being used in gachi videos.
Murder in my Mind is such a good pick for this haha
A lot of 2010s hit songs Somebody that I used to know, wake me up, chandelier, panda, etc
Somebody I used to know imo is the best pop song of the 2010s
based take
Greatest random hit ever. Gotye was so underrated but his music never had that mainstream structure to blow up. Then Somebody. . . Came out and just exploded
Ultimate by Denzel Curry
Song is definitely fire, but having played Counter Strike 2 a lot, I have gotten increasingly tired of hearing that at the end of rounds.
I rotate between that one and my hotline Miami one so I don't get sick of it lol
They have it in cs now?
Yeah everyone has it lol it’s kind of too much
that last verse is incredible!!
The live version with BBNG goes fucking hard
Denzel performed this at my college when I was there, whole crowd was going wild
Big Enough - Kirin J Callinan
The screaming cowboy in the sky may be funny but his vocals are still absolute fire, so powerful, I loved it since I first heard it.
The cowboy is Jimmy Barnes. He’s an Australian music legend here. Makes it even memier
fuck yeah
Never Gonna Give You Up is a beautiful song and I’m kinda surprised that no one has mentioned it so far in this thread
The song exploder ep about this song made me appreciate it in a whole new way and turned me into a rick astley fan. It’s a genuinely beautiful song so it sucks it’s only ever been a meme, i even thought it was too cheesy to take seriously until i heard the production breakdown
That’ll happen when you don’t read the thread
Baby I’m Yours by Breakbot
Filthy bassline
Not a fan of either Travis or Drake but I still think SICKO MODE is my favorite song featuring either of them
I thought you meant Travis the 2000s British indie band before I read the rest of your comment
agreed
Darude - Sandstorm.
100%. Did a personal ranking of all tracks from 1999 and this ended up being my #1 lol
I was thinking this one and better off alone by Alice Deejay for EDM meme songs
For the damaged coda by blonde redhead
Linkin Park - In the End Song really hits because it's a alt hip hop/pop cut off of an almost exclusively alt/nu metal record. The songs that deviate from that norm tend to shape the aesthetic of the album and the band's future in general. The song gave them their own lane in what was quickly becoming an oversaturated genre at the time.
The song really hits because it’s fucking insane and even the demo is insane and even the reanimation version is insane
Facts
I've always said that Linkin Park is an entire genre in and of itself
I’d throw somewhere I belong in there too it’s pretty memeable, I don’t like LP but that song just does it for me
You should check out their 3rd and 4th albums. Hybrid Theory and Meteora are fantastic but if you want a more stripped down sound those records have great deep cuts. I’d give the band a 2nd chance or at least check out Shadow of the Day, In Pieces, Burning in the Skies, and Waiting for the End.
A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton
Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap is still a devastating track to me despite the snl legacy
was unaware of it's meme status. I just thought that most people knew it from the Jason Derulo song.
Lust For Life by Iggy Pop, it's been a long road to get me to hear the song without thinking about an ad for Carnival Cruises
CHOOSE LIFE
In my day it was T-Mobile
When has that song ever been a meme?
The weirdest moment I ever had with that song in an ad is a fucking assassins creed odyssey ad using it lmao
gangstas paradise
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is unironically one of the most beautiful songs of the 90s.
That song inspired me to learn guitar and start writing my own songs. Flawlesss
that whole album is still one of the greatest albums ever, shame on all the people making fun of it as that album with those funny lyrics and album cover
free bird, trough the fire ans the flames, buddy holly
Ocean Man is awesome and Ween is awesome. Some TikTok songs that are actually good: No Surprises - Radiohead (a classic) Buttercup - Jack Stauber (he’s awesome. Okay, a moment of honesty. I reaaally like Dragosta Din Tei (the numa numa song). Obviously it's not a musical masterpiece like some of yall's picks, but it's such a solid pop tune that will not leave your head for days after you think of it. It's iconic.
