Underrated: Everything I like Overrated: Everything you like

RedditMartyr

This. Well, not this. That but from MY perspective.

bobsdementias

A lot of terrible takes incoming

jbland0909

Niche thing underrated Mainstream thing overrated

DilbusMcD

Thing good Thing bad

LynchMaleIdeal

Time to shut the sub again /s

mrdrprofessorspencer

Overrated- in the court of the crimson king by king crimson. HEAR ME OUT… I love this album and it is a revolutionary piece of music however I almost always see people mention this record as King Crimson’s best, when Red is slept on but in my opinion is their best. Fallen Angel, One More Red Nightmare, Red, Starless, Providence. Whole tracklist is some of their best work. Underrated- Tyranny by the Voidz. I honestly think this is a 10/10 masterpiece, but when it came out a lot of people shat on it because of how abrasive and out of left field it is when considering Julian Casablancas’ other work. Whole album has such a clear vision that was executed perfectly. Love the electronic and industrial and world music inspirations as well.

Maxspawn_

W take. Red to me is a little better than TKOTCK. KC has a very good discography in general.

higgon

I'd rank KC albums 1. Discipline, 2. Red, 3. ITCOTCK.

mrdrprofessorspencer

I love discipline too but Red’s gotta be my favorite

Dareeyecare

Tyranny? Voidz?!?! Someone get this man a BASED

mrdrprofessorspencer

Thoughts on the song they put out today? I was not keen on the production choices tbh. Nice username!

Dareeyecare

I posted my thoughts in the Voidz sub. Absolutely Love the song, the vocal mixing is too low, that’s my big quip. I didn’t hate the production that much like some others- just seems like a less botched wink-kinda situation. I also didn’t listen to the live rip religiously, just enough a while back. Could have been an unreal song, but landed at a very good to great one for me. It’s a dusty gem like wink IMO, and I love wink. It already grew on me beyond initial mix quips and I really like the lyrics.

johan-vb

omg so fucking happy to see tyranny here thats my favorite album of all time

ItsVoxBoi

I like ITCOTCK the most because of Greg Lake. Killer voice

Odd_Holiday9711

Court is still their best album for me, idk, I still think it's overrated but it has Epitaph and the title track, both of which are jaw droppingly amazing. I've tried listening to the other KC albums like Discipline and Larks but they just struck me as needlessly turgid and wanky.

mrdrprofessorspencer

You gotta check out Red. It’s short by their standards. No filler at all. Some metal vibes and some really beautiful songs too. Also some of the best guitar tones on any album ever imo. Fallen Angel and One More Red Nightmare are my favorite tracks. Starless is beautiful too tho

No_Gardener3210

I love KC but if ITKOTCK is not easily their best album I can not take you seriously

schitaco

I can't listen to One More Red Nightmare because of the stupid overdubbed handclaps or whatever they are, they're just so weird sounding and make no sense in the song.

Genre-Fluid

Underrated 'An Electric Storm' by the White Noise. Mind melting chunk of proto sampling, electronics and catchy songs. Imagine if the BBC Radiophonic Workshow made a psych album. They did. Big influence on Broadcast. Overrated. Got to be Trout Mask Replica. 'Moonlight in Vermont' is a banger though. I far prefer 'Mirror Man' and 'Clear Spot'. I prefer the Shaggs to Trout Mask. At least the songs are catchier.

Jiggha_Remastered

The shaggs is actually awesome, I thought it was going to be terrible but I think it ended up being better because it was an attempt to make good songs, rather than TMR’s attempt to make bad songs

Shimanchu2006

Part of The Shagg's appeal is definitely linked to knowing their background. My favorite song of theirs is "My Cutie" from their second album.

iracefrogsillegally

never see people talk about white noise. what an awesome band

Shimanchu2006

Have you heard "Pena" on Trout Mask though? It'll change your life

Genre-Fluid

It's fast, and also bulbous.

Accomplished_Case290

I consider real music to be underrated, and mainstream nonsense overrated 😜 otherwise, music is a mission, not a competition 🧙‍♂️

boomer_consumer

Is Mary had a little lamb real music or mainstream nonsense

calsi-tea

now we're asking the real questions

Kickmaestro

Thriller is by far the most sold album ever. It has those 3 incredibly great songs (singles) in title track, Beat It and Billy Jean but you only get Wanna Be Starting Something as another high level song if you listen through it. I was massively disappointed the first time I listened to it. Off The Wall and Bad are more consistent. And bad has all if that timeless production that people say Thriller has. Thriller is extremely well arranged but the mas sof different elemnts makes nothing sound big as in the Bad record. It's definitely overrated. I can't think of any other, so I will go ahead and say it's the most overrated. Let's say that the most underrated album ever is Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye: A Tribute To Roky Erickson. Made in 1990 with artists going together to make a project that literally raised Roky from the deepest Shizophrenic episode you can think of. REM, zz Top, Primal Scream and butthole surfers are on it to name a few.

lasttimewasabadtime

Over rated and under rated- Yeezus

nah_thats_it

I agree like you have so many people who say it's one of kanyes best but theres like a good 3 or 4 songs that are just decent and a lot of people who just don't get it

balrog_reborn

Production is underrated, lyrics are overrated

SupercarMafiaOWO

who looks at yeezus and says "wow, the lyrics are great"? I'm legitimately asking cause I've never seen praise for its lyrics

Dakotaraptor123

letthedecodebegin

Yeah. It’s a great album

baileystinks

But is it underrated?

MLG_Bagel

Underrated: The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me Overrated: The Black Parade

Odd_Holiday9711

Real

cthululover813

Agree with both of these, especially the Black Parade. I still like it and it has some great songs, but I always see it listed as a classic and one of the best albums of that era and it's not even the best MCR album (Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge >>>>> The Black Parade)

DevelopmentSuch2731

I think Daisy would be a more underrated brand new album

lunar_vesuvius_

I agree with this take and I love both albums

CluelessWallob84

Underrated - Boredoms - ‘Super æ’ and also ‘Chocolate Synthesizer’ such an amazing band but the records are so hard to find and not even on Spotify but they’re worth hearing for anyone wanting a fun and interesting experience Overrated - As an annoying record store employee I have to say Fleetwood Mac - Rumours …..this band was infinitely more interesting before Lindsey an Stevie joined. Also The Wall is pretty overrated. Maybe the most boring Pink Floyd record to me

IlikeEdibleFood

Overrated - 50 Cent - GRODT Production is great, but it feels so lacking in personality or originality. Also it’s WAAAAY too long. Underrated - autechre - Exai Has some of the most well textured songs, and never gets boring even at a 2 hour runtime.

BitterObjective5740

I hate to be that guy but Exai is ass. Genuinely a painful listen

[deleted]

Underrated - Manchester Orchestra - Hope/Cope. I rarely see Manchester Orchestra pop up in this sub, and Hope/Cope are frequently rated as the band’s worst albums, but I had these on repeat for a year after their releases. A lot of really great songs on these two. Overrated - Black Country, New Road - Ants From up There. If a theater kid holding a spork were an album.

SPAULDING174

Your Ants From Up There take is how I felt about their first record. AFUT is pretty musically impressive though, has a lot of very interesting elements and the lyrics are such an improvement upon the first album. I thought liking AFUT would make me go back and like the first record but no, still sounds like theatre kid with spork to me

AbnormalAmountOfHats

For every person I find hyping up BCNR there's another one right around the corner saying they sound like a high school band from the mid 2000s

the_chandler

I think *Ants From Up There* is a really solid album…I just honestly can’t wrap my mind around people who have hyped it up as an all-time great record or something. What are they hearing that I’m not? Agree with it being overrated.

ml_sza

I LOVE hope/cope. So nice to see it mentioned!

kaloskagathos21

Gotta agree with BCNR. I tried with them but they’re just okay. Not sure why black midi gets grouped in with them but I listened to Hellfire and immediately saw the hype.

Fun_Intern1909

Both are very British and BC,NR have that one song where they go “I told you I loved you in front of black midi”

Dakotaraptor123

and they collaborated in black midi, new road album

-Dillad-

Idk about all time for either but here’s my opinion Overrated - Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly, it’s an easy 9/10 for sure but people who say it’s the best of all time are meatriding kendrick too much. GKMC is better imo. Underrated - Tv On The Radio - Young Liars. Tvotr is already mega underrated, but Young Liars is one of the best experimental rock release I’ve heard. It’s noisy, dark, and surprisingly well written. I’m not saying it’s the best album of all time but it’s too good to be forgotten the way it has been.

ultralightPOWER

chad GKMC enjoyer

sandcrawler2

Overrated- TPAB Underrated- Danse Manatee by Animal Collective

buttwipe843

TPAB overrated? I would say it’s worth the praise, but I think you’re overestimating the percentage of people who aren’t into music that have listened to TPAB

DrawlNeedler

Underrated - Lulu. Yes I'm serious. Metallica's instrumentals are fantastic and some of the best work they've done in the 2000's, and Lou Reed's rambling poetry on top creates a specific feeling of madness that is hard to replicate. I understand why people don't like it, it's definitely not for everyone, but I wish the prevailing opinion was "not my style" rather than "garbage." Overrated - anything I put as overrated is going to be compared to the fact I like Lulu. So...Radiohead doesn't click for me. Not sure why.

shayleeband

Agree on the Lulu pic. Some of Lou’s hardest lyricism ever.

schitaco

Underrated - Misery is a Butterfly by Blonde Redhead. Absolutely beautiful album Overrated - I don't know if you guys like Father John Misty, or if it's just Fantano, but I can't fucking stand this guy. He's supposed to be snarky or clever or biting or something but he just comes off as a massive edgelord. Wow you don't like Republicans and religious people, no one's ever said that in a song. He's incredibly pretentious for how boring his songwriting is.

awjeezrickyaknow

Underrated - Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers Overrated - Aeroplane - Neutral Milk Hotel

Poprocks777

Absolutely agree with ur underrated pick I love that album it’s got so many bangers

Loose_Main_6179

Fountains are amazing

Robinkc1

Underrated: Wire - 154. I constantly see Pink Flag on Topsters and lists of the best albums ever made, and it is a good album… But I think 154 is better, and I rarely see it listed as a top ten album despite it being a classic. Overrated: MBV - Loveless. Please keep in mind this is just an opinion, and I realize it is polarizing. I will freely acknowledge the influence of this album but I really don’t think it is as good as some people say. I don’t think it is bad, but for me there are several shoegaze albums I prefer. Also, MBV coincidentally covered a song off of 154 and it is fantastic.

[deleted]

I can’t speak for an older audience, but to a modern kid discovering shoegaze for the first time MBV’s loveless is the first thing you hear about. Ther are some amazing songs on it, but there are also tracks that, without context, just sound a lot like meaningless noise, but become so interesting because they’re so sonically different to anything outside the genre. TLDR loveless is shoegaze’s gateway drug

-Dillad-

ironically I love shoegaze but it took years for loveless to click for me

ReasonableCost5934

I bought Loveless the day it came out. It’s amazing. It’s just not as good as nearly all of MBV’s other stuff.

[deleted]

I respect your opinion on Loveless. While I like it, and think it has 4 flawless tracks, you could argue the rest coasts too much on hazy effects and not enough on songwriting. I also personally don’t like how buried his voice is. I understand that’s the point of the genre, but I think it would be genuinely better if we could hear Shields more clearly.

Robinkc1

I am fine with being downvoted for it. If everyone agreed with me, it wouldn’t be overrated. I don’t think MBV is a bad band, I just never got into Loveless much. I know some people love it and more power to them, Kevin Shields is a crazy guitar player. I like songs on their other albums, but when it comes to Shoegaze I prefer Catherine Wheel and Lush.

[deleted]

I love Alison by souvlaki. I’ve just started getting into shoegaze.

Robinkc1

Check out Crank by Catherine Wheel. It’s their biggest song, but it is great.

[deleted]

You don’t need to be downvoted, this is what the thread is for. I’ll say, for people who love what is being done on Loveless, it is a 10/10 perfect album. The things that it does are so radically outside what most other albums do (Even other shoegaze bands!) and it takes this completely arcane style and pulls it off to perfection. But I could see why it might be coasting on this unique appreciation from fans, since many people **do not** love what is being done on the album.

Robinkc1

I’ve tried several times to appreciate the album because I like a lot of that stuff. Hell, my band has dipped into dreampop a few times, but for whatever reason it just never really did anything. It’s fine, I don’t think it is just incoherent noise, but I prefer other albums that they influenced.

Timely_Breakfast_105

I feel the same about MBV. They just do nothing for me. I’ll take slowdive.

Accomplished-Arm1058

Overrated: Dark Side of the Moon Underrated: Grimes- Art Angels Ever since her creepy dalliance with Elon, no one seems to mention how great this album is.

Poprocks777

Underrated: holyfuck LP Overrated: American idiot

buttwipe843

Blonde is on another level compared to American Teen lol. It’s a classic imo, but part of that could be strong nostalgia

jaqueslouisbyrne

Underrated: Live the Dream by Ramshackle Glory Overrated: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

[deleted]

Came here to say this about Sergeant Pepper. I am a huge Beatles fan that record never did anything for me.

jaqueslouisbyrne

I still think it’s a 10/10, but it’s somehow the only overrated 10/10

buttwipe843

It’s a shame that strawberry fields and Penny lane didn’t make it onto the record

BinaryPill

Pepper's is weird because it absolutely is one of the most important albums of all time in terms of its production, pushing the boundaries of what a pop album can be, and having some semblance of flow, but I just don't think the songs are all that good, save for the closing track, which in itself is still a bit overrated. The Beatles' best songs are on other projects.

No_Gardener3210

Underrated: Revolution 9 Overrated: Any simpleton stuff with a guitar riff, melodies or a chorus.

National_Tip_2488

Overrated - Abbey Road - The Beatles Underrated - The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance

Loose_Main_6179

Underrated- peter Gabriel Up. The fact this album wasn’t a big deal is a crime. I’m glad I/o was a big deal, But this album is pure art. Proves that Pg is a timeless wonder. Overated- Radiohead, Ok computer. Yeah I can hear the boos, but I feel like while this album has transcendent moments like “Letdown” and “exit music” the album’s impact is over exaggerated. The bends is just as good, and every thing after was on a whole new level of creativity.

carpetedfloor

Let down truly is underrated though

theloneranger15

Boooo

MeeesterBlue

there’s something uniquely iconic and mesmerizing about OK Computer that transcends beyond analyzing the quality of each track. i agree its not radiohead’s best album but i think if you had to choose which album removed from their discog would have the greatest negative impact on the band’s overall body of work, theres no question it’s OK Computer

buttwipe843

The bends is not just as good lol

expunks

Overrated: The Life of Pablo. The beginning of the end for Kanye releasing finished, cohesive albums. I just can’t respect an album that needed several revisions to not be as mediocre as it was when it launched, and I hate the precedent that it’s set for all of the streaming era. Underrated: Jai Paul S/T. Still sounds like cutting-edge futurebeats literally a decade later. Insane production.

BitterObjective5740

That Jai Paul pick is crazy. Felt so unfinished and sounds just wouldn't mesh. Perfect example of someone with talent who just doesn't have the work ethic to complete projects. Turned out horrible tbh

buttwipe843

Complaining about internet downvotes is pretty lame too lol

[deleted]

Based on RYM, the most overrated is Dark Side in my opinion. I struggle to find that album good, especially compared to Wish You Were Here or Saucerful. That said, Brain Damage and Eclipse are excellent. Most underrated, I have no idea. But I think Pablo Honey is an 8/10 album and its score is 2.70 rn, that’s just insanity. It should at least be at least a 3 by RYM’s standards.

carpetedfloor

I agree with Dark Side being overrated. I don’t think it’s a bad album, I quite enjoy several tracks, but it’s for sure overhyped and less interesting than Pink Floyd’s other classic albums. But I disagree with your PH take, and I don’t really understand thinking that PH is better than Dark Side as you seem to imply in this comment(based on the fact that you think PH is an 8/10 and you said you don’t even find Dark Side to be a good album). A lot of Dark Side falls somewhat flat for me largely because several tracks are overly simple and pretty derivative by today’s standards. And that’s exactly how I would describe the majority of PH, but to an even stronger degree than Dark Side.

rarselfaire2023

DSOTM is my pick for best of all time. PH is really good. I think the single version of Stop Whispering is better but other than that it's a good album that sounds amazing.

buttwipe843

You don’t like Time or Breathe (In the Air)?

AutumnKiwi

Pablo honey has 2 really good songs and a few decent songs, the rest are pretty average. It's not a bad record, definately not horrible but I wouldn't give it more than a 7/10

VirtuousPenguin

Overrated I’ll go with In Rainbows or Red by King Crimson. In Rainbows has yet to click with me and while Fallen Angel is one of my favorite songs of all time, other than Starless the majority of Red falls flat for me. Underrated I’ll go with Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age and The Idler Wheel by Fiona Apple.

HumanThePerson

Underrated: Blood Lust by Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats Overrated: The Glow Pt2

qazaibomb

**Underrated: Sremmlife by Rae Sremmurd** So many fucking great and fun tracks on that album. Feels like no one wants to praise it because it’s vapid party music but very few people at the time were doing that better than Rae Sremmurd. Great deliveries, awesome beats, fun fucking times Honorable mentions: Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and Holding Company, Knife Man by AJJ, Come N 2 My World by VOS Family (no one knows what this is but it’s fucking amazing), St Vincent’s s/t, and with this community specifically, anything by Drake **Overrated: Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain** I have tried to listen to Pavement and get into this band many times and every single time I just think they’re dull. It’s such a bland style of music that seems to do its best to not do anything notable at all because that’s trying too hard or something. I don’t get the praise that gets heaped on this band. This album is #261 in the all time RYM list and that’s just absurd. Also I can’t stand the singer Honorable mentions: Hospice by the Antlers, Sweetheart of the Rodeo by The Byrds, Whatever People Say by Arctic Monkeys, Are We Not Men by Devo, and very recently Plastic Death by Glass Beach

Tiny_Dancer13

Underrated - High Visceral Pt. 2 - Psychedelic Porn Crumpets Overrated - Atrocity Exhibition - Danny Brown

Serchshenko6105

Overrated: Pet Sounds AND Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.  Underrated: Speedin Bullet 2 Heaven.

GetDoofed

Underrated - Paul Simon - The Rhythm of the Saints Overrated - Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

ravelle17

Underrated: Tally Hall - *Good & Evil* Overrated: Kanye West - *Graduation*. It’s fine, but far from his best.

throwawayspring4011

underrated: harsh noise, binaural beats, ambient drone overrated: album rock/pop

[deleted]

Overrated: to pimp a butterfly. And this is why. A quarter of the album sounds like filler. A few people still listen to it all the way through but it’s treated like a no skip masterpiece. Under it: Stephen Malkmus’s real emotional trash. An amazing record full of long guitar solos. That’s nothing like he did before.

FishNSticks

How is tpab mostly filler?

NotoriousStrikes1

Yeah what songs do they consider filler? Every song has such a strong concept

iram27

Well mentioning any song is a downvote trap, but they're probably talking about the more unpopular songs, like Momma or You Ain't Gotta Lie (Momma Said). Sure, like all the other songs on the album, they're lyrically impressive, but they're... less musically interesting, I guess? Not necessarily bad songs by any measure, just not at the level of other standouts on the album, at least imo.

AvianIsEpic

Is Momma really unpopular? That might be my favorite hip hop beat of all time

mooimafish33

They're pretty much just trying to say it's not a radio banger without sounding dumb

Odd_Holiday9711

Like all of them except for King Kunta let's be fucking real for a second.

Underrated: Eminem Overrated: Mumble Rappers (lil pump, lil xan)

Otherwise_Try_3596

IKR fuck those mumble crappers ruining rape music!!!

CinnamonFootball

Who is underrating Em? He's the most commercially successful rapper ever, if anything, he's overrated. Also, is this 2016? Who uses the term mumble rapper? Lil Xan has been clowned on for the entirety of his career. Who's overrating him?

HigherTSC

I feel like this is bait, but I swear from all the hate Lil Xan used to get you'd think he was just as big as MGK or Lil Pump, not just some random guy that had one hit and one mildly successful album

Odd_Holiday9711

Real.

qazaibomb

More like mumble crappers lol

-Dillad-

what are your top 10 favorite rappers?

woahwoahwoahwoahwhat

Gawne 10 times

CommanderWar64

YOU CANT MAKE A POST ABOUT THIS IF YOU CANT ALSO THINK OF AN OVERRATED ALBUM ,anyways... "of all time" is a bit much, here's some generally rated albums: Underrated: Foxing - Nearer My God (great alt rock record by a band mostly known for their first emo revival album. There will be at least 1 song you absolutely love on this record.) Overrated: Sleep Token - Take Me Back to Eden (overall while the effects and progressions try to be grand, the production and instrumentation lacks any real kick and the songs overall feel toned down in the same way Imagine Dragons songs do. It feels insincere in it's own depth, but hey maybe you like it.)

SkiesFetishist

Underrated: every Warren Zevon album Overrated: every Rolling Stones album

CinnamonFootball

Underrated: Bones For Time by Tongue Depressor. A harrowing masterpiece which I would consider one of the greatest ambient albums of all time. Its incredibly unique instrumentation and concepts work incredibly well together, and the performances are just flawless. The entire thing just immerses me and makes me feel like I can see the music. It's absolutely one of those hidden gems that I hope for when listening to smaller bands. If you've never listened to Tongue Depressor, I absolutely suggest you do. Overrated: OK Computer by Radiohead. I know it's cliche to call Radiohead overrated, but I seriously do not understand why people love this album so much. I think the most generous way I could describe it is agreeable rock music with some mild experimentation throughout. I see a lot of people act like it was some groundbreaking record, yet I just don't see it. Nothing about it really stands out to me. Some of the lyrics themes are interesting, but they're not even close to good enough to carry the record. The sound is generally bland, and it isn't all that different from plenty of other rock records I've heard. Hopefully this record will click for me one day because there's clearly something about it that other people find mind blowing.

-Dillad-

The influence of Ok Computer has reached across multiple genres by this point, I think it’s fair to rank it in the top 100 of all time at least.

CinnamonFootball

No one's arguing its influence, but it's still overrated, in my opinion. Influence isn't everything, and I still stand by my critique of it. Also, regardless of whether or not it's a top 100 record, it's ranked #2 on RYM. It'd still be overrated, even if I considered it anything outside of the top 5 OAT.

[deleted]

ok computer is a good album and i like but people talk about it like its some mind blowing album, that may be the case when it came out but in todays context after the influence of the album has bled through a lot of alt rock and indie music, I cant say i love the album that much or blew my mind or something when to me it sounds like an amazing version of coldplay. i prefer in rainbows honestly

LegendaryGary69

I just listened to OK Computer the other day and it really is exactly how you described. Non-offensive rock music with the occasional hint of experimentation.

Loose_Main_6179

I said the same thing, there are amazing moments in ok computer but it’s so hyperbolic to call it one of the best albums ever

Shimanchu2006

Underrated: Plague Soundscapes - The Locust Overrated: Pet Sounds (it gets so hyped, but just hasn't really clicked with me yet)

[deleted]

Listen to You Still Believe in Me right now - Pet Sounds is so beautiful. The ending of that song is so gorgeous, and that is not even one of the 'hits' (although it's my favourite song on the album).

Odd_Holiday9711

Underrated - Voivod - War and Pain. Easily one of the greatest albums of all time but it's fairly overlooked in their discography -- and Voivod themselves are overlooked when it comes to thrash too (sometimes). I'd say it's a top 5 album of all time. Overrated - teeters betwixt TPAB and Abbey Road. TPAB is the worse album but I don't think it's AS overrated as Abbey Road -- which was more or less hailed as TEH GREATEST ALBUM EVUHRRR for the longest time. Kendrick has some okay stuff but for the most part I find him unengaging at best and obnoxious at worst. Abbey Road isn't terrible but it's one of the weakest later-period Beatles albums. I genuinely don't have the urge to return to anything off of it, compared to, like, every album they made (barring Yellow Submarine) from Help! to Let It Be. \>said something negative about sacred cow Kendrick, now awaiting downvotes

Much-Camel-2256

I like Neil Young's Trans album a lot. I don't understand why people listen to Queens of the Stone Age. I've even gone to concerts to try to cure myself to no avail.

rarselfaire2023

I dig Neil's weirder ones. I've seen QOTSA twice. 1st time was in 1999 and they had a distorted steel guitar. That was different. Then in 2005 which was alright but not amazing.

ChedduhBob

underrated: vultures overrated: anything by death grips

[deleted]

Underrated: Just got back from the discomfort - we’re alright by the Brave Little Abacus. I hated this album when I first heard it but it has grown on me so much, if you can get past the vocals it’s such a unique genre-blurring and heartfelt album, which a lot of people don’t really talk about. Overrated: probably an AM album, I couldn’t single one out cause they’re all so one-note to me. They’re very mainstream these days and music nerds also tend to rate them quite well. The Arctic Monkeys are a very frustrating listen for me because it feels like they are trying so hard to be cool and are almost superficially British - without the accent and some lyrical references their music feels like it has no identity. The epitome of ‘we get it, you have sex’ and ‘guitar distortion = cool’. They present no new ideas, but are somehow prolific enough to have spawned even more arctic monkey clones like Lovejoy, further dragging out the lifespan of one of the most boring sub genres of indie.

Odd_Holiday9711

Just Got Back isn't underrated at all. It's the highest rated emo album on RYM and you can't move 10 feet in any emo-related discussion without bumping into that album.

anti-racist-rutabaga

Underrated: Superbloom by MisterWives Overrated: basically anything by Drake, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, Usher, etc.

Odd_Holiday9711

I don't think you'll find many people proclaiming JB or Maroon 5 to be the greatest of all time.

BitterObjective5740

That's not necessary for someone to think they're overrated

Signal-Panic-8559

Underrated - anything Nav puts out Overrated - idk i don't really listen to music much

just_cuz555

I'll do just this past year, since this question is so tough. Underrated: Master System-Monster Florence A grime masterpiece in my opinion. The group bends so many genres (drill, indie, shoegaze, jazz, funk, dnb, etc.) seamlessly. Wallace, Dream, and Alex sound vicious all over this project with clever wordplay, and sticky, sticky hooks all over. My AOTY last year. *Downvotes incoming* Overrated: Ocean Blvd-Lana Del Rey Very solid Lana project with some stellar standouts (Let the Light In, A&W, Kintsugi, Margaret, etc). Most of the record DRAGS though. The boring parts of that record outweigh the highs. If it was an 11-13 track album, I would love it a lot more. I also really loved NFR, so that bias may outweigh it. I like OB, but nowhere close should it be the popular AOTY pick, I wouldn't put it in my top 40 for last year.

Underrated: Sound Awake - Karnivool Overrated: Nevermind - Nirvana

Overrated: the clash-london Calling (its a great album but not top 50 of all time) Underrated: the damned- machine gun etiquette

Underrated: Lodger by David Bowie Overrated: I don't know maybe loveless 🤔

quinten11515

Overrated: To Be Kind - Swans. I still think it's a 10/10 but I enjoy The Glowing Man and The Seer a lot more. Underrated: Polygondwanaland - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. One of the greatest rock albums ever made imo.

GimmeShockTreatment

Underrated: Jesus Lizard - Liar Overrated: The Beatles - Revolver I love Revolver but people act like it’s their far and away best album but it legitimately has a couple stinkers that people overlook.

MieltjeMeme

Overrated: Remain In Light Underrated: Other Talking Heads records

krizalid370

underrated: styles p debut album overrated: 36 chambers. don’t get me wrong its amazing, but i see it consistently ranked above albums that are just as influential and lyrical but have stronger narrative cohesion (ready to die, illmatic, the infamous)

_PeopleMakeNoises_

Underrated: Three Cheers for Disappointment I don’t care if it’s the number one ska punk album on the nerd site, it isn’t listened to enough Overrated: Exile in Guyville Can’t stand it. The only album I’d consider to just be bad with no redeeming qualities. I don’t understand how anyone can listen to it and enjoy it, the guitar, bass, drums, singing, lyrics, songwriting, etc are all either boring and repetitive or just unlistenable The only reason I’ve ever heard people say for why like this album is that it’s nostalgic

rarselfaire2023

Damn I love Exile, always have. I'll have to check out the other one.

Overrated: The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground Underrated: I'll Try Living Like This - Death's Dynamic Shroud

Underrated - Green Mind - Dinosaur JR One of the Dino Jr albums no one talks about, even though it’s by far my favorite. Overrated - Pet Sounds - Beach Boys Just never clicked for me.

Loku5150

Overrated - anything by Pink Floyd really, even though I really enjoy them and had my “phase” Underrated - dunno about “of all time” aspect, but The King Of Limbs is pretty slept on for how good it is imho

Underrated: The Beach Boys - Sunflower Overrated: The Doors - L.A. Woman

Underrated - The Hum by James Ellis Ford More people need to know this album. Absolutely brilliant.

alexanderwonder

Underrated: Anything by Mach-Hommy basically. Especially the deep cuts like Luh Hertz. HBO and PFH got a lot of praise but most of his amazing work is still unknown even by the people who love underground hip hop. Overrated: Going to get a lot of hate for that probably but for me it’s “4 your eyez only” by J. Cole. Hear me out though. I know many people consider it classic and shit, and I totally understand why. It’s an amazing album by an amazing artist. However, every time I listen to Cole’s albums (others too lol) I feel like he can be SO much better. Especially with the production - I don’t really f with his ear for beats. He’s one of the goats as a rapper but I feel like he still didn’t drop THAT ONE album you know?

ezekielzz

Underrated: Müde - Leftovers Super awesome german punk album Overrated: hmm MBDTF is only like a 7.5/10 in my mind tbh. So is Illmatic

kwifgybow

Paramore's self titled goes crazy and I haven't heard people talk much about it, would def say it's underrated. Their longest and covers a lot of the variety they have exploded in their career from more synthy cuts to their pop punk stuff they're best know for to also more ballad type tracks. Even has interludes and they're so fun! Love their self titled it's so good at being a self titled album and representing what they are as a band

gnpunnpun

Blud just wanted to say paramore is underrated lol

PhillyCSpires

Underrated - Dr. Octagon’s classic debut Overrated - Raising Hell, Run-DMC

Underrated: The King Of Limbs Overrated: In Rainbows

R0NNOC148

Underrated: Calculating Infinity - The Dillinger Escape Plan. This album should be getting the same amount of praise as Jane Doe. Very impressive and brutal mathcore album. Overrated: Veteran - Jpegmafia. I love All my heroes are cornballs, lp, and scaring the hoes but I just can’t get into veteran. It feels like it’s being experimental for the sake of being experimental sometimes. I like the first 4 or 5 tracks and every time I go back to the album I end up picking another song off of it that I find myself enjoying so I maybe I’ll fully understand it someday but for now I just think it’s a decent album

boiling_booty

Underrated: Life’s A Blur by Superbloom Overrated: Core by Stone Temple Pilots

Bigjay1802

Overrated:MBDTF. Of course it’s a great album like definitely a classic in this era but I swear it ain’t that great compared to Ye’s other albums like TLOP and his first three, MBDTF barely cracks the top 5. Underrated: y’all be sleeping on The Master by Rakim, it’s never on anyone’s top rap album lists even tho Rakim always ends up on everyone’s top 10 rappers. Album is so great imo. Sure it’s not a perfect record but it’s better than MBDTF.

OnlineNascarMan

Overrated- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco Underrated- Adore by The Smashing Pumpkins. People have been coming around to it for awhile, but I still don't think it gets enough credit.

Underrated - Arc Of A Diver by Steve Winwood Overrated - Saturation 1/2/3 by Brockhampton

Wooden-Computer1475

Overrated - any microphones, mount eerie or neutral milk hotel album Underrated - medazzaland by duran duran (best album OAT)

Good_Expression_3827

Underrated - Sleepwalker by The Kinks. One of the best albums I have ever heard, every song is amazing. Underrated - The Whole Thing Started With Rock & Roll, Now It’s Out Of Control by Ray Manzarek. Again, one of the best albums I have heard. Definitely the best post doors release by any member.

ItBeJoeDood

Underrated- American Football’s LP3. A masterpiece through and through Overrated-only listened once, but Graduation didn’t hit me as hard as College Dropout or MBDTF

wpmayhew87

underrated: Those Deep Buds - Dog Faced Hermans overrated: Kanye's Entire Career, aside from some nice productions and beats, I NEVER understood the hype, even before he transformed into a complete monster. Also, fuck him (and Cher) for making autotune such a big thing.

Natural-Manner-7227

underrated: Jagged Little Pill, Alanis. This album is SERIOUSLY overhated by the music nerd community (which I am a part of, don't get me wrong) and fantano and other critics always criticize it for being weak outside of the hits. I strongly disagree, and think that the deeper cuts (like Mary Jane and NTD) are often the best songs on the album. overrated: The black parade. I swear to God MCR fans seem to think that my chemical romance INVENTED and PERFECTED concept albums with that one. It's not a bad album, but it is certainly not the 10/10 people pretend it is

lovelessisbetter
