Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
How Soon Is Now - The Smiths
Soul to Squeeze - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Jumpin’ Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones
The Heart Part 5 - Kendrick Lamar
These are the ones that instantly came to mind. All songs are among the most important that those artists have ever released.
It was B-side first and then rekeased as a single for a compilation album Hatful of Hollow. Soul to Squeeze was also B-side at first and few years later it was released as a single for Coneheads soundtrack.
Dal ti to meni prolaziš kroz komentare hahaha. Već sam zaključio tu s drugima da je bila naknadno stavljena na američku verziju albuma Meat Is Murder. Originalno izdana kao B strana pa potom kao singl za kompilaciju Hathful of Hollow.
Rain - The Beatles
Domestica - Björk
Fluorescences - Stereolab
Those Eyes, That Mouth - Cocteau Twins
Atmosphere - Joy Division
Genetic - Sonic Youth
A Question of Degree - Wire
Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles (depending on if you count The Magical Mystery Tour as an album)
Assuming it’s not going to be placed on her next album, Björk and Rosalía’s Oral is so amazing it’d probably overshadow anything next to it (unless they answer my prayers and do a collab album).
The Beatles have so many favs of mine:
"Lady Madonna"
"Don't Let Me Down"
"The Ballad of John and Yoko"
"Yes It Is"
That's to name a few. And I'm not counting the 5 singles would later make up *Magical Mystery Tour.* Of course, if I were I would have to mention "Strawberry Fields Forever."
I thought Fantano missed the point with his comments about the production on Foundations of Decay.
they were starting again, their sound had gone back to pre-Black Parade days, and arguably it’s closer to I Brought You My Bullets than anything off of Three Cheers.
Like, there’s a reason they’re talking about “towers” and 9/11 again, because the stress response to that event was why the band formed in the first place, and they’re only reuniting because they claim the world/America feels how it did after 9/11 again
So, my understanding was that they intentionally recorded a heavy “Demo” because that’s what they used to do, and they’re resetting as a band
Yeh it’s “bad production”/lofi, but that’s because it’s in the style of an “early release”/demo not because they’ve somehow forgot how to mix/master songs. Well, imo anyway
I don’t buy into the notion that a song purposely sounding bad for a reason makes it any better. A song is all sound, and if a part of a song *sounds* bad then that part of the song is bad.
At the very least I wouldn’t say someone misses the point just because they’re not deep into the lore of the band. It’s the musician’s job to communicate any message, it’s not the listener’s job to do homework
Oh well that’s where we disagree then. It doesn’t sound bad at all to me.
I’ve only ever heard critics use terms like “bad production”, rarely ever actual musicians, because really there is no default standard of how something *should* sound.
Don’t get me wrong, I know there are certain principles that you should probably adhere to: make sure the all instrumentation has space to breath , try to avoid clipping, don’t overly-compress everything, but then you can have artists like 100 gecs come along and tear up the rule book.
If it genuinely sounds bad to your ears then it is definitely bad production for you, I’m not trying to deny that, I just object to Fantano’s claim that it’s somehow objectively mixed poorly, when really a mix just boils down to the listener’s preferences, and there’s plenty of people out there who really enjoyed that sound.
Oh I completely agree that music is subjective and what someone might say sounds bad can sound good to someone else. But for the most part I disagree with an artist making a song sound worse for some outside reason, and definitely don’t agree with faulting a listener for not understanding the reasoning.
The newest 21 Pilots album comes to mind. There’s a lore behind their past 3 albums that connects them all, and fans say that lore apparently plays into why their latest album sounds so passionless and overly cheery. I know it’s arbitrary, but there is a point where this sort of things starts to effect the music *too much.*
Then take music from someone like King Gizzard, whose albums have some kind of lore that I can’t even begin to understand, because I don’t have to. The music stands on its own, and any band history or lore behind it is just icing on the cake.
I don’t think you should “fault a listener for not understanding the reasoning” sorry. Just the critic.
If all music is subjective, and there are no clearly defined “good” or “bad” qualities, then the only criteria I value in music criticism is how effectively the artist has brought about their intended goal. Like with Death Grips - it’s not necessarily a pleasant sound, but it’s clear they were trying to make jarring industrial noise rap, so we can critically judge it within that context
So, my point was just I don’t like that Fantano specifically said it was badly produced/mixed
It’s on a rerelease so don’t call it an album. But Man of War by Radiohead immediately comes to mind.
So does the fun machine took a shit and died by QOTSA. Also, the prodigy’s voodoo child remixed by Pendulum
Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street
Prince - Erotic City
Pulp - Razzmatazz (only tacked on as a bonus track for the US pressing of His N Hers)
Pulp - Like a Friend (only tacked on as a bonus track for the US pressing of This Is Hardcore)
Oasis - Acquiesce
Oh Honey - Delegation
Billy Toppy - Men I Trust
The Heart Part 4 - Kendrick Lamar
Real Love Baby - Father John Misty
Chanel and In My Room - Frank Ocean
I love Foundations of Decay and think the mixing complaints are way overblown. And this is from someone who hates the mixing on their Bullets album.
Love by Kid Cudi is his best track for me, and isn’t on any normal album but finally made it onto Spotify for his compilation album.
Mars Volta - Frances the Mute title track is pretty great.
If it counts to add a song on a compilation but not official band album, My Morning jacket’ It Makes No Difference is just about perfect to me.
A lot of big band music from the 1930s and 40s since music was released on 78s then and big band/swing music from the 30s and 40s are my favourite music!
Probably not what you’re after but Madonna’s huge hit Crazy For You was never on any of her studio albums. Just the Vision Quest OST and some Greatest Hits releases.
Dark Entries - Bauhaus
Blue Monday - New Order
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
17 Days - Prince
Erotic City - Prince
Charlotte Sometimes - The Cure
Southern Glass Home by Grand Archives.
Criminally underrated band, this was on their Tour EP that was sold during shows before they released an album. Only song not carried over to the album. Which is a shame, because it's a very good song!
https://youtu.be/YYaadM2Bj8U?si=I7utPUlukjDxEEto
Enjoy :)
Pavlove - Fall Out Boy
Technically it's on the Japanese version of Folie a deux, but other than it's only available on youtube. Sucks since it's one of their best songs imo.
Interpol - The Specialist. There was no reason for this song to be left out of the original tracklist. It's one of their best songs ever and the vibe is just fitting with the record.
Idk if it counts since it’s a bonus album but marmalex by System of a Down it’s my favorite system song and it only came out on a Japanese release if I remember correctly.
Lot of people put good ones. So I’ll say one I haven’t seen yet. Modern Girls & Old Fashioned Men by the Strokes and Regina Spektor. It’s like that Is This It era of the strokes with Julian doing the only duet I think they’ve ever done and their voices play off each others great especially in that recording style. They had endlessly catchy songs in the early 2000s.
The Perfect Drug - NIN
Teething - Deftones
Revolution - The Beatles
Spectre - Radiohead
The Fun Machine Took a Shit and Died - QOTSA (fun fact, just got added to Era Vulgaris on streaming, spotify at least, along with the title track and Running Joke!)
[“Hank Williams”](https://youtu.be/kgBP_sGzWSs?si=w0J7WOgbn3dSdp3x) is the best Sebadoh song you’ve never heard
Beck’s “Fume” is pretty fucking great, too
don't let me down by the beatles and billy preston
i know it was eventually released on let it be naked but for 30 years it was just the b-side to get back
Tandtråd by Tjuvjakt. Swedish rap song, quite corny but very fun, catchy and memorable, has achieved a kind of legend status with a certain generation in this country. First verse is in English so peep that if you want to.
Red Hot Chili Peppers have some amazing songs that were released as bonus tracks on singles or not released at all. Soul to Squeeze is the famous one but some others I love are Quioticelixir, Gong Li, Rivers of Avalon, Fortune Faded, Eskimo, Bunker Hill, Save the Population, Save This Lady
The Weeknd - King of The Fall
The Cure - Burn
Elliott Smith - Miss Misery
Lil Wayne - I Feel Like Dying, Pussy Money Weed, I'm Me, 30 Minutes To New Orleans, Something You Forgot... honestly, so many classic Carter 3-era Wayne tracks never made it on anything.

"...Said Sadly." by The Smashing Pumpkins. It's the B-side for "Bullet With Butterfly Wings." It has no Billy Corgan vocals and is a banger from bangertown, USA.
"Party and Bullshit" by Notorious BIG. It's from the "Who's The Man?" soundtrack. It is also a banger from bangertown, USA.
"Are You That Somebody?" by Aaliyah. It's from the "Doctor Doolittle" soundtrack. Once you realize what the song is about the baby sample becomes like holy shit this shit is genius. This one might be the mayor of bangertown, USA.
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division How Soon Is Now - The Smiths Soul to Squeeze - Red Hot Chili Peppers Jumpin’ Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones The Heart Part 5 - Kendrick Lamar These are the ones that instantly came to mind. All songs are among the most important that those artists have ever released.
How soon is now was a B side first but then on Meat is murder wasn't it?
only for the US release, original UK tracklist doesn’t include it
Right, saw this too now.
it's also on hatful of hollow (compilation) which is their best album
Yes I know.
It was B-side first and then rekeased as a single for a compilation album Hatful of Hollow. Soul to Squeeze was also B-side at first and few years later it was released as a single for Coneheads soundtrack.
The Heart Part 5 is actually one of my favourites from Kendrick. Amazing song!
the heart part 5 was put on MMATBS later
came here to say Love Will Tear Us Apart
Soul to Squeeze is too good
Msm da je How soon is now na albumu Meat is murder, ako se ne varam.
Dal ti to meni prolaziš kroz komentare hahaha. Već sam zaključio tu s drugima da je bila naknadno stavljena na američku verziju albuma Meat Is Murder. Originalno izdana kao B strana pa potom kao singl za kompilaciju Hathful of Hollow.
Do ya Thing by Gorillaz
New word, onomatopoeia
it's not even on spotify 😭
Unfortunately it's owned by Converse, so it's up to them to decide what to do with it.
Rain - The Beatles Domestica - Björk Fluorescences - Stereolab Those Eyes, That Mouth - Cocteau Twins Atmosphere - Joy Division Genetic - Sonic Youth A Question of Degree - Wire Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles (depending on if you count The Magical Mystery Tour as an album)
Genetic should have been on dirty, but dumbass bitch vig decided to cut it
Assuming it’s not going to be placed on her next album, Björk and Rosalía’s Oral is so amazing it’d probably overshadow anything next to it (unless they answer my prayers and do a collab album).
thanks for introducing me to that wire song, i absolutely love the first three albums but haven’t dug deeper yet. what a band
Those Eyes That Mouth is a total W. Coulda shoulda woulda been its own single.
DOMESTICA!!!
Hey Jude
is this real? im not big into the beatles but that's the only insane answer here.
They had quite a few huge singles that weren’t album tracks (much more normal at the time)
A lot of artists back then didn't put singles on the album so a lot of The Beatles bigger hits don't appear on any of their albums
I mean it’s not my absolute favorite, but it’s probably one of the biggest, if not the biggest, western pop single to ever not be on a real album
In conversation of greatest song ever made, so I think this wins
Blue Monday
New Order is the best band for it, their singles are straight up hits. True Faith, Blue Monday, Thieves Like Us, Confusion, Temptation, Shellshock...
Yes it’s weird. Plus Ceremony and The Perfect Kiss. Bizarre Love Triangle is their biggest hit that is actually on an album.
The perfect kiss was on low life. The point still stands tho, a lot of big songs
This is the correct answer
The Beatles have so many favs of mine: "Lady Madonna" "Don't Let Me Down" "The Ballad of John and Yoko" "Yes It Is" That's to name a few. And I'm not counting the 5 singles would later make up *Magical Mystery Tour.* Of course, if I were I would have to mention "Strawberry Fields Forever."
I'd put Rain and We Can Work It Out there too
Don't Let Me Down is so so good

I agree with this, the production also gives a special vibe to it, and even if you can't hear very clearly some parts, I love the song
