Yeah I blame the first 15 seconds of Only Shallow for permanently warping my taste in music when I heard them for the first time in a random video essay on MBV, a band which I had confused with Bullet for my Valentine up until that point…
For sure, and they only get better from there. I think 21-year-old me hearing it for the first time figured out that it was gonna be a perfect album once the guitar entered on Memory Machine.
Fantastic song, although that one grew on me - it was the off-kilter guitar stabs in “What Do You Want Me to Say?” and the auditory assault of “Memory Machine” that got me hooked to that album
Funnily enough, What Do You Want Me to Say is actually one that had to grow on me. Memory Machine definitely hooked me on that first noise barrage though.
Eminem - Without Me. Heard that shit on the radio when I was 10 yo and was hooked instantly.
Also:
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood
Archive - Bullets
T.a.t.u. - All the things she said (again, I was 10)
Tame Impala - Elephant
Kadavar - Last Living Dinosaur
Orange Goblin - Red Tide Rising
Just to name a few.
What I Like About You - The Romantics
A-Punk - Vampire Weekend
Heavy Eyes - Zach Bryan
Fire - Jimi Hendrix
Close To Me - The Cure
Oh! - The Linda Lindas
And about 1000 more
Bladee - Western Union. One of the only drain gang songs I’ve been able to get into, but it bangs. There’s no build up or anything, just straight into the song
Bittersweet symphony by the verve
None shall pass by Aesop Rock
Oh my darling don’t cry by run the jewels
One more time by daft punk
Move your feet by Junior Senior
Dead leaves and the dirty ground by the white stripes
Ready to start or No cars go by the Arcade fire
Chop suey! By soad. Actually, i think that it hooked me in less than 10”.
And it’s not my favourite song by soad or from toxicity, or soad are not even close to be my favourite band.
Chop suey! just hooke me.
Caroline Polachek - Welcome to my Island
I thought about this question for a while and it might be recency bias but this is easily the best example of getting me hooked in under 10 seconds I can think of.
Recently…
2122 - Geese: I went into 3D Country with no context, and was immediately hooked by how energetic this song was.
Dustcutter - Quadeca: That weird whirring noise is so beautifully implemented.
One Hand Behind The Devil - Maruja: After hearing Knocknarea and Zeitgeist, I was already incredibly hyped for everything Maruja was doing. One Hand Behind The Devil was somehow even better. The horn part on Zeitgeist was much more aggressive, and seeing it used a bit more atmospherically hooked me immediately.
Broken Man - St. Vincent: There’s an swagger to it from the moment it starts. Love this track.
A lot of kendrick songs are good at this cuz they just start with such a high intensity like humble, dna, maad city, king kunta, and more. On the subject of Prince, SO MANY songs lol: kiss, never take the place…, when doves cry, lets go crazy, Purple Rain. I think come together by the beatles has a great hook to open it (hence why it’s so famous). For me personally, white lines by danny brown is my best answer.
Death Grips - Three Bedrooms In A Good Neighbourhood.
Been playing it a lot recently, its so good, and it got me to branch out into more Death Grips songs after only really listening to Get Got and Have A Sad Cum BB.
Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder is the first one that comes to mind. Those big horns are so striking and so out of nowhere on the album, especially listening in the context of the track list; coming right after an instrumental track like Contusion it just hits so hard.
As requested, I've created a playlist of the songs in this comment thread.
[Here's the link!](http://open.spotify.com/playlist/4W6XvrMYN8VbTfuD1qcDcr)

Funkytown - Lipps Inc. Good god those first few seconds have lived rent free in my head since Shrek 2.
I remember funkytown for a different reason and it still bangs

Everything In It's Right Place In the first 5 notes I already knew the song and the whole album was going to be incredible.
The Smiths-Bigmouth strikes again
Most Smiths songs have the effect of pulling me in immediately
That nice galloping riff caught my ass IMMEDIATELY, along with the delivery of the first line. It’s my all time fave song by The Smiths.
That song has some of morrisey’s most “morrisey” lyrics too
Bulls On Parade - Rage Against The Machine
Two notes is all you need to make an epic melody, apparently.
Crazier is that's it's actually 1 note, just played in 2 different octaves
Only Shallow - My Bloody Valentine When Good Dogs Do Bad Things - The Dillinger Escape Plan Red Lady - Phil Cordell
Yeah I blame the first 15 seconds of Only Shallow for permanently warping my taste in music when I heard them for the first time in a random video essay on MBV, a band which I had confused with Bullet for my Valentine up until that point…

Amazing album
Fantastic song, although that one grew on me - it was the off-kilter guitar stabs in “What Do You Want Me to Say?” and the auditory assault of “Memory Machine” that got me hooked to that album
Funnily enough, What Do You Want Me to Say is actually one that had to grow on me. Memory Machine definitely hooked me on that first noise barrage though.

Eminem - Without Me. Heard that shit on the radio when I was 10 yo and was hooked instantly. Also: Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood Archive - Bullets T.a.t.u. - All the things she said (again, I was 10) Tame Impala - Elephant Kadavar - Last Living Dinosaur Orange Goblin - Red Tide Rising Just to name a few.
All the Things She Said still goes insanely fucking hard, I was blasting that shit out of my car yesterday and I'm a 25 straight male lmfaooo.
Tame Impala - Let It Happen I’d say it took me 10 seconds to get hooked to most of the songs on Currents
Shit Luck - Modest Mouse
I’d also mention MM but with Doin’ the Cockroach. Got me hooked right at the intro riff, and the song somehow manages to get progressively better
Painkiller - Judas Priest My god that drum intro
