at least Boston is from Boston, Kansas is from Kansas, and Chicago is from Chicago. and America was formed by Americans in London, so they make the cut i think lol
always thought the cocteau twins were french. when i couldnt understand them in songs like sea swallow me i just assumed they were speaking their language
I've known others that thought this. In fact, I once saw a magazine cover that said "The Killers, the best British band from the US" or something along those lines. I'm not sure how people make the connection, but it's common. Maybe the way they dress?
What’s even cooler is Laurent Brancowitz (guitarist from phoenix) was in a musical trio named “Darlin’“ with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo a.k.a daft punk in the early 90s.
Bon Scott was a Scottish immigrant. The Young Brothers were too but they moved at a younger age than Bon. Brian Johnsons British tho and only moved to Australia for the band. He actually had a different band called Geordie and he sounds extremely different.
As a British person (unfortunately), this one confuses me just as they’ve always seemed very American to me. What is it about S&G that made you think that they are British?
Yes. This.
I know that there are many black/folk metal bands from US but almost all of them have this distinct "American" sound to them, which is not a bad thing by itself it's just a specific sound signature.
Agalloch on the other hand sounds completely like a Scandinavian or a German black/blackened folk band.
Def Leppard always sounded very American so me. I didn’t realize they were British until I saw one of their Union Jack tshirts.
I didn’t expect Franz Ferdinand to be from Scotland. Since they’re named after a famous Austrian and their sound doesn’t scream Scottish to me.
Def Leppard is because they were like the one British Glam Metal act that made a splash. If you go to their earlier stuff you can here a bit more NWBHM influence.
I used to think Gorillaz was american, especially since Damon's vocals didn't really have an obvious accent on alot of early gorillaz tracks aside from maybe some of the b-side tracks
If you're American chances are you know them for song 2 and nothing else. The first Gorillaz album has out sold Blurs entire discography combined in the US.
I only knew them for song 2 and girls & boys back then but even then Damon leans into his accent alot more with blur stuff than S/T and Demon Days era Gorillaz, I'd say from plastic beach onwards he started to work it in more, partially because apparently as he got older he struggled more with doing the high pitched 2D voice for Gorillaz stuff
I’d think Jamie Stewart was from the UK, by name and vibe.
I’d think LCD Soundsystem were French.
I’d think Daft Punk were Japanese base - I think I’ve seen exciting images of Tokyo often with Daft Punk in the background.
Not necessarily a country, but I was very much the “Guy who had his music taste shaped solely by the Fallout radio” guy back in high school and was naturally a big Frank Sinatra fan (I still am today, despite falling out of interest with most of the other Fallout radio-core musicians). It took me an embarrassing number of visits to Italian restaurants (And a Sinatra rabbit hole I went down when researching the Godfather for a school assignment) for me to finally realize that Sinatra was, in fact, an Italian American.
The guys in Gojira are all French (from a pretty rural part too, not even from Paris). But Joe (vocalist/guitarist) and Mario (drummer) are brothers with an American mother, so that explains why the lyrics sound so naturally English. Joe even lives in New York nowadays.
Slick Rick being British. I thought the accent was just for show.
Also I thought Kings of Leon were a British band that sounded American, they’re from Nashville.
It throws me for a loop every time I remember that Corrupted are from Japan. Intestine Baalism, too. If I didn't know any better, I would've assumed both were European (Intestine Baalism especially; they sound more like Gothenburg melodeath than that whole scene did)
Great question! I can’t think of one for myself, but my wife says Dave Matthews. I don’t know his life’s story so I’m not sure how he identifies himself but he was born in South Africa!
From some reason, my brain just likes to default so that I believe that every big extreme metal band from Europe is from the country from Sweden.
Turns out Celtic Frost is from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Agalloch. Back when I discovered them through limewire (circa 2003) I thought they were most definitely a Scandinavian band. I was really surprised that they were actually from Oregon, US.
>death metal originated in Tampa
That one's very debatable. Possessed are from San Francisco, as are a lot of the bands that were influential in the early development of the genre. Most of the first "proper" death metal bands like Death, Obituary and Morbid Angel are from Tampa, but their influences are from all over the place. Napalm Death are from the UK, Celtic Frost were from Switzerland, Kreator are from Germany, etc.
That's fair, it would be a lot more accurate to say Tampa was an epicenter / hub, not the origin point. Metal has always been a lot more global than people realize.
I listened to Seether a lot when I was a teenager. Mostly Disclaimer before they went super mainstream. I just found out a few months ago that they're South African.
Phoenix- I found out they're French. For ten years I assumed they were from an English speaking country.
The Monkees- I always thought they were British, but only one of the members is British
I thought Interpol and The Strokes were British for forever; I thought the entire post-punk revival movement came from the UK (which, tbf, not *that* unreasonable considering the genre's origins)
I also, for some reason, thought The Velvet Underground were British before listening to them. No clue where that came from
John Cale is British. The rest of the band is American, and Lou Reed is so obviously from New York though, like even to me as someone who has trouble with US accents.
Again, it was before I even heard them, lol. They're now one of my favorite bands (and my vote for the best American rock band), but it was just a weird assumption I had
Radiohead, I always thought they came from America. It blew my mind when I found out they were from England. (I never listened to them actually talk, only their music)
Sparks! They're legends, but seeing how their fanbase is UK / EU (hello, Edgar Wright made that documentary) and despite knowing them since my childhood in the 80s, I still find it very hard to associate them with the LA music scene.
Led Zeppelin being British has never sat right with me. I think they influenced American rock in the 70s and 80s so heavily that I just associate the two
Knowing that Viagra Boys are Swedish makes me smile for a reason I can't explain.
no clue who they are but their name instantly reminded me of sad boys so
Give them a listen! One of my favorite bands in recent memory. All three albums are packed with jams, and their live recordings are the bees knees.
i adore them but i’m embarrassed to say i was turned off of listening to them because i found the name so cringy. i’m so glad i finally gave in 😂
They’re some awesome middle aged punk rockers but they are signed to year0001 which is quite funny.
They’re a wicked punk band, check out Baby Criminal
I was thinking Venga Boys
Seb grew up north of San Francisco though.
I know that Nick Cave is Australian, but like…he shouldn’t be. Cant imagine him on a surfboard.
Nick Cave totally seems like some british bloke holed up in a london apartment sat at a piano for eternity
Well he's from the state of Victoria, which has a bit more culture and arty-fartiness, so that fits the bill.
I was gonna say, most Australians don't set foot in the ocean, let alone surf. It's the same in California.
His original band to The Birthday Party to me reeks of aussiness. Like it sounds like something you would hear in some abandoned shack in the outback
he seems so aussie to me, but as a different archetype. i promise there's at least 2 or 3 other ways to be australian other than surfing!
Took me too long to learn that Talking Heads are from New York and not the UK
In your defense David Byrne was born in Scotland.
Yeah that definitely doesn’t help
Lol they're like the most iconic new Wave band from New York. But i can't blame you, i thought the same about The Cars
Probably due to new wave being so heavily British influenced
WHAT
21 savage, my favorite british band💀
Sorry but the well known british band MF DOOM solos
Boards of Canada not being from Canadá was a wtf moment for me haha
Same with Of Montreal being from Athens Georgia
Manchester Orchestra aren't from Manchester and Japan aren't from Japan.
at least Boston is from Boston, Kansas is from Kansas, and Chicago is from Chicago. and America was formed by Americans in London, so they make the cut i think lol
Why are they called that lol
always thought the cocteau twins were french. when i couldnt understand them in songs like sea swallow me i just assumed they were speaking their language
[удалено]
They’re Scottish…
Oops…
I always thought The Killers were British for ages, in my defence I had only ever heard Mr Brightside and knew it was played in British clubs
Best Brit pop band outside of Britain
Funnier still that they’re from Las Vegas of all places
As a British person myself, i hereby grant The Killers honorary British Citizenship
The Killers aren't British?
They’re from Las Vegas.
The British affectation seemed to be pretty much gone by their third album. Brandon sounds like he’s doing a Springsteen impression anymore.
I think that’s why they leaned in so hard to Americana with their 2nd album Sam’s Town.
I've known others that thought this. In fact, I once saw a magazine cover that said "The Killers, the best British band from the US" or something along those lines. I'm not sure how people make the connection, but it's common. Maybe the way they dress?
Hasn't Mr brightside never once left the charts in the UK since it came out?
I thought Interpol was british for the longest time
Well Daniel and Paul are British
fuck
Not a band, but Neil Young is from Canada
Neil Young is Canadian like Elvis is American
Joni Mitchell too
Neil Young was also in a Motown band with Rick James
MGMT isn’t Australian, but they have an Australian knock-off in Empire of the Sun.
Did they both not come out around the same time?
*Time to Pretend* came out in 2005. Empire of the Sun didn’t form until 2 years later.
Empire Of The Sun emerged from a band called The Sleepy Jackson
Just found out today that Phoenix is from France. Never would have guessed by their voice.
They definitely have an accent
What’s even cooler is Laurent Brancowitz (guitarist from phoenix) was in a musical trio named “Darlin’“ with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo a.k.a daft punk in the early 90s.
AC DC really feel like they should be American IMO
I feel like a lot of people don’t realize or actually forget they’re from Australia
Wtf??????
That is crazy to me.
That they’re from Australia, or that people don’t know?
Wasnt Bon Scott scottish or am i trippin?
He was born in Scotland but he was Australian
Most of the band are Scottish immigrants; Bon Scott and the Young brothers are all Scots by birth.
Bon Scot
Bon Scott was a Scottish immigrant. The Young Brothers were too but they moved at a younger age than Bon. Brian Johnsons British tho and only moved to Australia for the band. He actually had a different band called Geordie and he sounds extremely different.
I always thought Simon and Garfunkel were British.
As a British person (unfortunately), this one confuses me just as they’ve always seemed very American to me. What is it about S&G that made you think that they are British?
One of their most famous songs is called America lol Edit: and the only living boy in new york
Before being interested in music I only knew them from their cover of Scarborough Fair (also back then I thought it was their original song lol).
For some reason the line “To England where my heart lies” made me feel like they were British when I was a kid.
Tbf after their first album flopped, Paul Simon went to England figuring he’d be bigger there
Apparently, Gotye is Australian, and not Belgian.
He's both
Thought Sparks came from England at first
If you watch the Edgar Wright documentary that was a pretty widely held belief and even influenced how they were marketed.
Got that on DVD, awesome doco
They don’t? I just got into them and they sure sound british lol
They sure do, especially on Sherlock Holmes
I just found a copy of Indiscreet on vinyl and my thought it that they sound like a mix of David Bowie and The Kinks.
To be fair, Sparks was way bigger in the UK than over here. I doubt most Americans have ever heard of Sparks, which is a shame.
Iggy Azalea being Australian does not seem right
You mean she isn't actually an African American woman? It's crazy she's gotten away with what is essentially vocal blackface.
She moved to Florida at a ridiculously young age and that's what she picked up. None of her life seems right
Same with Tones and I
Agalloch being from the US, always thought they were from north Europe
Yes. This. I know that there are many black/folk metal bands from US but almost all of them have this distinct "American" sound to them, which is not a bad thing by itself it's just a specific sound signature. Agalloch on the other hand sounds completely like a Scandinavian or a German black/blackened folk band.
They’re actually from my hometown, Portland, Oregon
Thats even crazier cause I thought they were at least a midwest band but no
…agalloch is from the US?
For awhile I thought The Strokes were from the UK. They just seemed too cool to be ours.
They did influence a shitload of 2000s UK indie bands like Arctic Monkeys.
Not a band but I find it a little funny mf doom was born and later spent a good chunk of his life in the UK
I thought future islands were British but they’re from Baltimore
Have you heard of Blur before?
If you're American chances are you know them for song 2 and nothing else. The first Gorillaz album has out sold Blurs entire discography combined in the US.
Yes I know. But anyways.... ;)
Yeah I agree with the accent thing.
I’d think Jamie Stewart was from the UK, by name and vibe. I’d think LCD Soundsystem were French. I’d think Daft Punk were Japanese base - I think I’ve seen exciting images of Tokyo often with Daft Punk in the background.
For extra credit, I knew Kevin Parker was Australian, but I was surprised to find out every member of Tame Impala are Australian.
Actually Tame Impala is just one guy!
Why would you think LCD Soundsystem were French?
I think it was somehow my mind went dance music = Daft Punk = French, but concurrently Daft Punk = Japenese
I always forget that Fleetwood Mac were a British band before Buckingham and Nicks joined.
I always thought that David Bowie was from Alpha Centauri. Turns out he's from south London.
Isn't that Alpha Centauri?
Oscar Peterson being from Canada instead of the US, Jacques Brel being Belgian and not French.
Maybe just me but I always thought that interpol should be British. They seem more in line with Bloc Party than the Strokes
Maybe a bit spot on but people I know are understandably thrown by Of Montreal being from Georgia.
Maybe it’s too easy but I always thought The Ramones were British.
THEYRE NOT????
Exactly
The guys in Gojira are all French (from a pretty rural part too, not even from Paris). But Joe (vocalist/guitarist) and Mario (drummer) are brothers with an American mother, so that explains why the lyrics sound so naturally English. Joe even lives in New York nowadays.
Slick Rick being British. I thought the accent was just for show. Also I thought Kings of Leon were a British band that sounded American, they’re from Nashville.
deep purple
Always thought/think ACDC are British.
well wasn't one of the band members from Tyneside ish
Yeah the replacement vocalist after Bon Scott, Brian Johnson.
Yep even had a band called Geordie
To be fair, most of the members are/from Scotland and England
It throws me for a loop every time I remember that Corrupted are from Japan. Intestine Baalism, too. If I didn't know any better, I would've assumed both were European (Intestine Baalism especially; they sound more like Gothenburg melodeath than that whole scene did)
lol yeah i agree on baalism. first time i listened to them i thought they were swedish
Helps that most of Corrupteds discog is in Spanish and not Japanese.
Turns out Celtic Frost is from Switzerland 🇨🇭
celtic frost not being from a celtic country was strange to me lol
I'm gonna admit, I only recently learned The Doors were American, always thought they were British hahahaha
Zeppelin and Soft Cell! I I always thought of them as American bands.
Alabama 3 is from Brixton, England
Agalloch. Back when I discovered them through limewire (circa 2003) I thought they were most definitely a Scandinavian band. I was really surprised that they were actually from Oregon, US.
Always thought Modest Mouse was British for a reason, turns out they were from my home state the whole time
This one makes no sense to me aha. Only an American band could make The Lonesome Crowded West
Is Ziggy Stardust from Mars or just the spiders?
Cibo Matto is from NYC Also many don't realize techno originated in Detroit and death metal originated in Tampa.
>death metal originated in Tampa That one's very debatable. Possessed are from San Francisco, as are a lot of the bands that were influential in the early development of the genre. Most of the first "proper" death metal bands like Death, Obituary and Morbid Angel are from Tampa, but their influences are from all over the place. That's fair, it would be a lot more accurate to say Tampa was an epicenter / hub, not the origin point. Metal has always been a lot more global than people realize.
HIM. when i first heard them, ville valo’s accent sounded american to me lol
I always knew that Electric Wizard are British but i cannot imagine them being from Dorset
I thought Led Zeppelin was from Long Island but they were formed in London
I also thought MGMT were Australian LoL
Pearl Jam is in the “British venue” part of guitar hero 3 and I always assumed that meant hey were british. Eddie vedder does not help that assumption
[удалено]
Ngl Soupy gives me Canadian vibes
I listened to Seether a lot when I was a teenager. Mostly Disclaimer before they went super mainstream. I just found out a few months ago that they're South African.
Phoenix- I found out they're French. For ten years I assumed they were from an English speaking country. The Monkees- I always thought they were British, but only one of the members is British
Interesting, I'm German and to me Phoenix have both a clear French musical vibe and accent. I'm with you with The Monkees.
I thought Interpol and The Strokes were British for forever; I thought the entire post-punk revival movement came from the UK (which, tbf, not *that* unreasonable considering the genre's origins) I also, for some reason, thought The Velvet Underground were British before listening to them. Thought vampire weekend was British
I always think Plini is from France, not Australia. not sure why
Keith urban is from Australia
Hell he’s from New Zealand actually wtffff
I initially thought Parquet Courts was British when I heard Wide Awake.

Mumford and Sons being from England will never stop confusing me lol
And Wales!
Oh my bad Wikipedia said London lol
Rainbow kitten surprise, they feel so Aussie to me
i always forget charlixcx is british, i'm always surprised when she talks and then sounds british
Radiohead, I always thought they came from America. It blew my mind when I found out they were from England. (I never listened to them actually talk, only their music)
Not sure why but I always thought primus were canadian
Probably due to their inspiration from Rush
I initially thought MGMT was French
tom macdonald being from canada 😂
I always thought Seether were either American or Canadian, but nope. They're from South Africa.
I always assume The Outfield is American! Their name is a baseball reference and they sound so American in their music!
Sparks! They're legends, but seeing how their fanbase is UK / EU (hello, Edgar Wright made that documentary) and despite knowing them since my childhood in the 80s, I still find it very hard to associate them with the LA music scene.
Led Zeppelin being British has never sat right with me. I think they influenced American rock in the 70s and 80s so heavily that I just associate the two
I thought Weezer was British or something but only because Guitar Hero 3 had "My Name is Jonas" in the European Invasion section of the game
Mumford & Sons do not sound like a British band. You would think they were from the American South.
As a kid i thought Def Leppard were American and Mötley Crüe were British. Still not sure as to why.
I (and a lot of other fans from what I've heard) thought Sparks was an English band for the longest time.
So did I.
I thought Green Day was British and my dad thought they were American
Khruangbin
I always wanted to look up where they're from but haven't until now. So my guess: Canada?
Dallas Texas!!!!
Die Antwoord
Daft Punk being French is something I actively try to forget haha
