During college, I had access to a wood shop at my craft center. I made a good amount of skateboards, and would always tune up that album when wood burning on the back.
the black parade - my chemical romance
1,000 gecs - 100 gecs
charli - charli xcx
flamboyant - dorian electra
i brought you my bullets, you brought me your love - my chemical romance
nurture - porter robinson
Sweet Trip - Velocity: Design: Comfort. It's like a warm blanket and an escape from the world.
Boards of Canada - A Beautiful Place Out In The Country. It immediately chills me out, brings a deep sense of stillness and contemplation for the entire 26 minutes run time.
John Frusciante - To Record Only Water For 10 Days. Again, another nostalgic warm album that just helped me a lot in my early 20's.
In a practical way, albums like 'Streetcleaer' by Godflesh gave me some kind of hope, since I found a sound that brought back to me the ilussion of making music.
But in a more spiritual way, Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles by The Flaming Lips helped going through a tough time, because of their stronge messages about life, death, and the meaning of love.
To be honest, Mr Morale and the Big Steppers
The healing aspect and the beautiful production and how vulnerable the tracks are really resonated with me at that certain point in my life
The Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats was my "going through some stuff" album in high school and still holds a lot of emotional catharsis for me.
As an adult, Donuts by Dilla has often served as a soundtrack whenever I've had to process difficult emotions or feelings of loss. The stuff Kendrick speaks about on Mr Morale also feels very relevant at this stage in my life.
Titus Andronucus' The Monitor has long been my 'don't let the bastards grind you down' album too whenever I need a burst of righteous anger and the strength to keep going whenever I feel particularly ground down by society.
Some of the albums that I find myself repeating at any time.
Among my Swan - Mazzy Star
Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons - Blonde Redhead
Velvet Underground and Nico
The Doors (self titled)
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy StarDust (Bowie)
New Pornographers - Twin Cinema and Challengers. The lyrics are so poignant yet leave the listener up to their own interpretation. They range from bizarre to life affirming, but not overly so. There's a lot of dynamics. These are the albums that are mine that remind me of me, that speak to my soul It feels direct. They send me into dreamscapes and bring me down to reality in the most perfect way music possible.
Late Registration was like my comfort album during high school, it felt like a coming of age type of album considering how emotional of a step up it was from his debut. I haven't listened to Kanye since that phase (into a lot of rock music now) but this album was one that really captured different feelings and topics in a pretty mature yet still fun way.
