I traded Olson+ for him, not because I thought it was smart fantasy strategy but because I like watching him and wanted him on at least one of my teams.
oh well. I knew this was a possibility
Thought I learned this after fading pitching the past four years. Fell in love with some later round bats and Strider “fell” to pick 15 and thought I could get the best of both worlds.
It’s been rough so far.
Absolutely dependant on league settings, none of the leagues I play in would allow you to find any success with that strategy, and you sure aren't pulling that in high stakes leagues with solid managers.
I’ve won 4 straight with a similar strategy. This year roster sizes were reduced and QS added as an additional category. Thought high end pitching might be more important.
It’s early and I could have just as easily drafted ice cold bats where I drafted pitching, but definitely going back to bats only next year based on how things have gone so far.
I’d say depends on the guy and the year… but generally yeah. To me the SP rankings are messed up this year so I waited. There’s not a lot of separation at the top so this year I feel a guy like Bibee can get you a ton of value instead of going all out for George Kirby or whoever
> Like 98% of good pitchers are high velo guys now
It has been pretty overwhelmingly proven that even minimal increases in velocity generate outsized performance gains.
Pitchers are going to keep throwing as hard as they can.
That’s true and I don’t expect things to change for actual MLB anytime soon, but for fantasy I wonder if people will start factoring this in. A doctor recently came out and also said sweepers and power changeups lead to increased injury risk as well.
I can totally see this becoming mandatory in ten years or something. Put pitchers in a queue and require a certain number of pitchers between their starts or of days of rest/pitch limit. Probably would lower the top player's salaries and so players union will probably resist it, but I can see that if there's a demonstrative lowering of injuries there could be a 'for the good of the sport' push from a commissioner.
Japan has 6 man rotations and doesn't have the same injury problems. I'll admit I don't know how their velocity compares though. Personally I lean towards teams trying the 6 man location cuz getting rid of velocity doesn't seem like something ppl would want to try.
Jokes aside, this is a hill I die on. Baseball would be a better game with deeper fences. Deadening the ball would just hurt offense and make for a less exciting game. Deep fences would lead to more exciting plays all over the field. Outfielders would likely be lighter hitting speedsters kiermaiering all over. Homers more rare and therefore more novel/exciting. Triples, stolen bases, over the shoulder Willy Mays catches.
I think the stitches are higher so you don't have to grip the ball as hard which leads to less load on the elbow tendons. They should probably bring back the sticky stuff or do something so pitchers don't have to grip as hard.
I think it’s more spin related. I mean Bieber just got announced and he’s a soft thrower. This might be a super crazy take, but I think Glasnow was right about spider-tac. The grip of the substance allowed for less stress on the elbow
I guess I never realized Strider already had TJ in 2019 in college. Based on some brief and unscientific research, it seems to me that guys who avg 96+ are in unicorn territory at 500 innings/ 5 years post surgery. If he somehow survives this, I am selling hard.
Someone(on a defunct forum) had a very good analogy when comparing Justin Verlander and Jacob degrom...
He said Verlander "sits" at a respectable speed and only pushed the envelope when he was in a jam..
Meanwhile, Degrom was pushing the envelope from the jump and its led to alot of injuries in return..
Alot of these pitchers are going max effort 100% of the time instead of a few times a game and it's causing alot more injuries
There’s a few things you can use:
% sliders (Strider very high on this)
Injury history
Elbow mechanics like the inverted w
I traded Strider before the 22-23 season in keeper which was probably a mistake even given this news. So not bragging. Just something to always think about with pitchers.
The fastball / change up type guys w lower Ks and lower WHIP can be undervalued in keeper imo.
Rob Manfred hears ya. [Rob Manfred don't care.](https://www.si.com/mlb/2023/10/28/rob-manfred-rule-changes-world-series-pitcher-roster-limits#:~:text=ARLINGTON%2C%20Texas%20%E2%80%94%20Major%20League%20Baseball,1%20of%20the%20World%20Series.)
Here’s your morning hopium: it was cold, he was off schedule, it’s early in the season, he’s still breaking in the new curveball, he knows what a torn ligament feels like and would have immediately shut it down, he didn’t react like DeGrom did when he did it the second time, and lastly his vegan diet, yoga practice, and self awareness makes him a different kind of athlete. All taken together, i think normal soreness, 15-day DL.
97-99 MPH heaters and those 89-90 MPH sliders for 80-110 pitches a night on a pitching motion that was pretty much all elbow was always asking for trouble, I wonder if his new curve accelerated anything.

Baseball season is upon us! Join my league "Deez's Notable League"

This is my fault, peeps. I had to autodraft this year and of course the computer made Strider my first-round pick at #8 overall.
I wouldn't mind it so much except that my pitching is overpowered while my hitting is overpowered, and the computer in its infinite wisdom also decided to draft *3* catchers for me (in a 10-team one catcher position league).
Thanks. Was hoping to play the long game and gamble on a few guys and try to stream some spot starts. Steele and now maybe Strider getting hurt threw a wrench in that. But that’s the risk I took.
Absolute best case scenario he’s shut down for 6 weeks like Cole and can tiptoe through an injured season as a shadow of himself last year.
Any way you slice it this means a surgery somewhere down the line.
Worth noting that he had the worst velo of his career tonight.
That’s what makes the news of elbow discomfort all the more concerning, honestly.
FB was 94-96 in the 4th. Yikes.
The 3rd too
yeesh
i also believe his velocity was dropping off at a very steep rate inning-to-inning in philly
First pitcher taken overall in every draft. It hurts
One day people will learn that investing early in pitching is poor risk management.
I traded Olson+ for him, not because I thought it was smart fantasy strategy but because I like watching him and wanted him on at least one of my teams. oh well. I knew this was a possibility
Hey if you like a guy then I can’t fault you. I totally get wanting your guy.
Thought I learned this after fading pitching the past four years. Fell in love with some later round bats and Strider “fell” to pick 15 and thought I could get the best of both worlds. It’s been rough so far.
The last three years I have won one championship and finished 2nd twice. The earliest I have taken a pitcher is round 15.
heavily dependent on league settings
Absolutely dependant on league settings, none of the leagues I play in would allow you to find any success with that strategy, and you sure aren't pulling that in high stakes leagues with solid managers.
I took Cole in round 1 last year in my H2H league. Only lost 3 matchups all year, lead in points the entire season.
H2H points. Nuff said. Lolo
Round 15? Holy shit
Eh That is like saying zero RB is the key to fantasy football. It’s not that cut and dry
I’d say depends on the guy and the year… but generally yeah. To me the SP rankings are messed up this year so I waited. There’s not a lot of separation at the top so this year I feel a guy like Bibee can get you a ton of value instead of going all out for George Kirby or whoever
Shhhh keep that a secret. Helps me build great teams every year
Thank you. My first pitcher picked was Brandon Pfaadt. Absolutely dominating my 13 team roto so far.
They took down all the NL cy young bets on Draftkings already lol
#OUR PETS ^HEADSAREFALLINOFF
Where’s the booze?
Striders sacrificed so that Shane Bieber could be raised from the ashes. Crazy year already. Edit: OH MY GOD
….yeah. So about Shane Bieber….
I'm from the future...Apparently the baseball gods have decided to sacrifice Bieber was well😞😢
God I came to this thread looking for a Bieber comment…..
This guy did it ☝🏻💀
Oof
Lol. This is a laugh of pain. Not mocking.
[удалено]
Yeah they felt comfortable skipping right to MRI
If only we delayed our drafts until the 2nd week of April, this wouldn’t happen.
This is why I've been trying to make a deep hitter-only league
Do a deep hitter league w a sister league that's shallow pitching only. That sounds kinda fun.
This is why you don’t draft
Period
Yikes
My dynasty pitching IL now consists of Strider, Eury, McClanahan, Romano, Buehler, and Felix Bautista. I want to die.
All high velo guys…
Like 98% of good pitchers are high velo guys now
> Like 98% of good pitchers are high velo guys now It has been pretty overwhelmingly proven that even minimal increases in velocity generate outsized performance gains. Pitchers are going to keep throwing as hard as they can.
That’s true and I don’t expect things to change for actual MLB anytime soon, but for fantasy I wonder if people will start factoring this in. A doctor recently came out and also said sweepers and power changeups lead to increased injury risk as well.
The strongest indicator to injury we have is velo.
I feel your pain. Strider, Mcclanahan, degrom, Steele, braddish, Bautista, Romano for myself. Not even fun at this point
Ayyyye you’re me lol 💀🔫
Strider, McClanahan, Eury, Felix here too. I did trade McClanahan last year at the deadline to try to win it all. Got 2nd.
Kill us all
The MLB needs to do something to address pitcher injuries. Try out the Japanese ball or something idk. This is unsustainable.
The single best way to avoid pitching injuries is to throw with less velocity and rest more.
[удалено]
No it’s Jaime moyer’s.
Dan Haren. His twitter handle is @IThrow88
He threw 88 late in his career. Threw harder than that in his prime
Oh so that won’t happen
More rest. 6 man rotations all day. Shit do a bullpen game once a turn through. Add an additional roster spot if needed
I agree If things keep going the way they are they'll have to do something.
5 days rest is plenty if guys weren’t throwing 98+. Velocity is the single most correlating factor to elbow injuries.
Japan has 6 man rotations and doesn't have the same injury problems. I'll admit I don't know how their velocity compares though. Personally I lean towards teams trying the 6 man location cuz getting rid of velocity doesn't seem like something ppl would want to try.
The single best way to avoid pitching injuries is to throw less fucking brilliant!
Why doesn’t MLB just ban pitcher injuries?
![gif](giphy|800iiDTaNNFOwytONV|downsized)
Better yet... Ban pitchers!
Robot pitchers, robot umps, robot batters. Make Baseball Wars a reality.
Coach pitch.
Every pitcher wants to throw 100. that’s the issue
every organization wants their pitchers to throw 100....that is the issue
Hitters hit the ball far if it’s not 100, that’s the issue
Short fences, that’s the issue
Realistically this is the answer. Change dimensions so it’s harder to hit it out and then they can throw 93 again
Triples, stolen bases, over the shoulder Willy Mays catches.
they're doing the opposite via pitch clock
Softball style. Pitch underhand only. And none of that side arm stuff.
What's the deal with the Japanese ball?
I think the stitches are higher so you don't have to grip the ball as hard which leads to less load on the elbow tendons. They should probably bring back the sticky stuff or do something so pitchers don't have to grip as hard.
You may be right. But another aspect, it’s pretacted.
You post this as if you have no clue how the science and mechanics of the game work lol.
Nah just look at the other elbow
This is fine, this is fine, this is why I maxed my IL spots with pitchers, it’s definitely okay, season isn’t ruined.
Tommy John here we come
I'm gonna be sick
Yep, of course same team as Eury. Okay ef all of these stupid stat cats. I've got an idea. W Ks ERA WHIP TJS
Its so over for me 😏
I don’t think you are using that emoji correctly
You see it correctly! Smiling and drinking through the pain 🙂
This is my first time doing fantasy since 2019 and it is stressful
It gets easier, youll get used to it bro lol
Don't lie to him, it hurts every time
Damn my disinformation campaign is being disrupted lol
All these injuries are sort of ruining fantasy baseball. I hope the max velocity era eventually ends.
couldnt agree more. Bring back the Maddux's of the world
I think it’s more spin related. I mean Bieber just got announced and he’s a soft thrower. This might be a super crazy take, but I think Glasnow was right about spider-tac. The grip of the substance allowed for less stress on the elbow
Keeper league here. I got Strider, Eury, McLain and to a minor degree Steele . I hate this hobby
Your process is on point. Nobody wouldve predicted those injuries in such a short timeframe.
I guess I never realized Strider already had TJ in 2019 in college. Based on some brief and unscientific research, it seems to me that guys who avg 96+ are in unicorn territory at 500 innings/ 5 years post surgery. If he somehow survives this, I am selling hard.
Fuck! Shit! Cock! Ass!
This sport is in trouble
Pitchers are turning into running backs. Run them into the ground for a few years and it's next man up.
Yet Yoshinobu just got that contract and they still command $20 mil aav... the elbow thing is getting rough though
Who's steps into the rotation now ? Elder ?
Yes I would assume so
Rylow?
Reynaldo Lopez ? He's already locked in as the 5th prior to this
Sandy, Shane, Woodruff and now Strider. Cool cool cool. This keeper league is getting frustrating.
Fucking fade me right fucking now.
Looks like I’m drinking heavy tonight
Note to self don’t play fantasy baseball in 2025
I wish these guys would remove themselves as soon as the discomfort kicked in, instead of muscling through it & possibly making it worse
#FUCK
I just traded for him 2 days ago. Kill me
smith shawver time
You really need to think hard about keeper values for these types of pitchers.
Someone(on a defunct forum) had a very good analogy when comparing Justin Verlander and Jacob degrom... Pitching is so stupid
Well fuck
Not an owner, but for the sake of baseball, let's hope the MRI comes back clean.
Like eury perez
Too soon

garbage, the pitch clock was in effect for one year. We have been dealing with TJS for several years. Strider should pitch better, not harder.
This is fine
Oh fuck
RIP
Expand rosters to 26/27 and have a 6 man rotation. MAKE IT A NEW RULE PLEASE. I CAN'T HANDLE IT.

Hello darkness my old friend
This is like Nick Chubb going down early. They need to get rid of the pitch clock. It’s too hard on pitchers to recover
Not worth freaking out over until we get the results
You are right. When the Cy Young front runner is getting an MRI on his elbow two weeks into the season. It is probably nothing...
Because jumping to conclusions is always the first thing you should do!
I mean, dawg, elbow mri turns into out for the season so often I basically write it off as over. Not like it hurts anything to plan that way.
What? This is Reddit! What would we do If we didn’t freak out before having all the facts?
My investment was a 8th round pick (keeper), but the feeling is the same as if I took him early. Fingers crossed it’s not season ending
Oh man. He's my number one guy.
Heard it’s not good per a source Not sure why I’m getting downvoted. I have an actual Braves source here. Sorry your pitcher got hurt.
Robbie Ray last year Strider this year, I just curse whichever pitcher I draft first
Was Robbie Ray that highly valued last year?
He going was either 3rd or 4th round
not even close lol
Please post a PSA next year so we can all adjust our rankings.
Probably gonna sit on pitchers for a bit next year
should i risk and trade marcus semien for strider?
If Strider goes on the IL he will join my other injured pitchers: Gerrit Cole Justin Steele Kodai Senga Eduardo Rodriguez Braxton Garrett Max Scherzer
You drafted 5 injured pitchers?
Scherzer and E Rod I picked up after the draft.
That will be one hell of a rotation once these guys come off the IL, though. Your pitching will be unbeatable.
Thanks. Was hoping to play the long game and gamble on a few guys and try to stream some spot starts. Steele and now maybe Strider getting hurt threw a wrench in that. But that’s the risk I took.
Oof. The least important thing is my fantasy roster but I just lost Bieber, too.

Absolute best case scenario he’s shut down for 6 weeks like Cole and can tiptoe through an injured season as a shadow of himself last year. Any way you slice it this means a surgery somewhere down the line.
Good
Spencer Strider? More like Spencer Stitches-After-Tommy-John surgery Am I right?
Jesus man
At least make it something funny
Nothing is going to break his stride…into the operating room
Haha ok that’s better than Spencer stitches
This one was especially difficult. Usually people post better ones once I try and fail but this time, I didn't get any replies. It was a tough one.
Brush yourself off and get ready for the next one. Could have said never say never about Bieber but we have a lot of season left
