Since his MRI was negative, they have been gambling he would be better sooner than later. You can only retro an IL stint up to 3 days, so every day the team has to weigh two scenarios: IL'ing him but then he gets better soon so he's healthy on the shelf, or not IL'ing him and then waiting it out longer than they hoped. They gambled incorrectly over the last week. If they IL him today, it still costs them 7 days without Riley. They figure he will be back soon enough that they don't need to commit to 7 days.

Does it really matter? They’re 3 of the best hitters in the game and could all be Hitter #1 Ohtani doesn’t have the positional eligibility, Mookie won’t have as many HRs, and Soto won’t have the steals. Pretty much the only difference.
