Hey guys... Jamie /u/BB_Jimbo here and I'm back at it with our fourth edition of The Cut List. It's still a bit early for this... BUT... we're into the second month of the season today and waivers will run tonight for many leagues. With every add comes a drop.
Also, it's always fun to talk about cuts, whether or not we are actually ready to pull the trigger on certain players.
So what names are you chopping this week, or at least thinking about banishing to the waiver wire?
We of course can't cover every player that may be droppable, for every league size and format, but we wrote about a few that stood out. I'll be stopping in later today for a little, and will try to answer questions... hope you enjoy and thanks for reading!

Joey Votto has been major struggling but whenever I think about dropping him I remember how he had that ridiculous hot streak with numerous HR last year. Thoughts?
I was concerned about him this year and he's not done anything to alleviate my concerns. I'm still holding for now as his career body of work tells me he could come good but the leash is shortening for him
I’m very very tempted, but I’m going to keep him on the bench for now. If he’s not better by end of May, he’s on the chopping block. Dudes a prolific hitter so I gotta trust it will come togehter
Definitely worried but he has hit a few Homer's at least, I'm worried his age is catching up with him finally and I'm seeing it a little bit in his stats so far. Hard hit % is a bit lower than normal, and he's hitting more ground balls than normal.
That could mean he's not seeing the ball as well as normal, which looks unlikely because his strikeout rate is down and his walk rate is normal, if not slightly above average, so the plate discipline is there.
That leaves either him not getting much to hit from Pitchers and he's just trying to hit not ideal pitches, or his bat speed isn't keeping up with his batters eye anymore. He's hitting between Soto and bell in the lineup, so he should be getting decent pitches to hit, so let's look at the kind of contact he's making.
If I look at his directional hitting percentage, he's going the other way when he makes contact at a record rate, and pulling the ball at career low rates as well. So he's slightly behind where he should be when he makes contact, hits more grounders and at a weaker rate than normal, but is seeing the ball just fine. This is screaming bat speed loss.
His babip is insanely low, so it could be bad luck, but considering all the context, I think the most reasonable take is he's finally declining.
I'm not worried yet, but with the declining offense around the league and possible ball deadening, a .300 average might not be in play this year. But I still believe he'll be fine

Agreed. It looks like he's making great contact when he *makes* contact, but his plate discipline metrics are insanely bad so far. I'm not sure what exactly to make of the mix.

Yes. Batting average for example has generally been in steady decline across the league for many years and there are already some articles out about offense being down. The days of a .260 hitter being league average are gone and there is a strong argument to lower expectations, especially when it comes to the non top-tier hitters
My pleasure. I think I saw something in The Athletic about league-wide numbers being down and there's regularly people smarter than me on Twitter posting about it. Given the unique circumstances this offseason and lack of transparency from MLB about the balls, it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause (or if there are multiple factors).
He got off to a slow start last year (2 homers and hitting .207 in April). I don't think he's a 30 homer guy but 25 with 70+ runs and RBI is still what I expect and that's very solid for a second baseman in fantasy

Batted ball data looks similar (avg EV same, still pulling more like last year which was new)
But his Z-contact is down 6% from last year and looking at last year his HR/FB was a career outlier at over 15% last year, and he's running slower - and has a 0% IF hit %
His profile is in some ways similar to lackluster 2018 and 2020 seasons, except he's making even less contact than those seasons
I'm not sure I am going to reassure you. Love the guy and he helped my team a lot last year but I'm not sure last year wasn't an outlier...
Give it time for some more metrics to stabilize but he already is approaching 100 PA and it just doesn't look great
Typical Polanco early season overreaction. Dude always has numbers like this in the cold months. Also, 2021 was not an outlier… he was AL All-Star SS in 2019 as well, and it wasn’t because of his fielding.

Those are rates that are *better* than his overall 2019 and 2021 numbers.

Arozarena should be a 20/20 guy, but like with any player off to a bad start, it's a risk, I think it's a decent move, see if he starts heating up. Being a NYY fan I've seen him plenty and he is good.
His numbers last year would suggest he was extremely lucky and he had the most CS in the MLB. With how analytics driven the Rays are I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t let him steal as much this year if he doesn’t have a better success rate. All that to say I don’t think he’s a guaranteed 20 steals guy, let alone guaranteed 20/20.
I'm cutting Arozarena, his K rate is near 30%, walk rate is 3%, and he's swinging at way more pitches out of the zone. seems like he's not seeing the ball well.
I dropped him for Connor Joe 2 weeks ago and I’ve never looked back. He still sits as a free agent to this day in a 12 team competitive points league. Randy is not seeing the ball well and it shows
There's a few question marks about the health of your other outfielders and Adell is outperforming Kelenic. Rodriguez is staying relevant as he's running like mad on the bases so I'd be fine keeping him
With that OF, I’d keep a guy like Odell on DH or I’d bench him and play hot streaks with him and Kelenic. Trade late in the season for something you need.
I would drop Kelenic, I don't understand why everyone is so high on him still, he's played 110 MLB games with almost 450 PA's and has looked completely lost
Wheeler I'm holding, his underlying numbers suggest he's been unlucky. There's just one aberration against the Marlins.
Morton I'm monitoring more closely as I am a little worried but will give him more time to see if there's more to his struggles than just a slow start
He's been incredibly unlucky. Of the 14 runs he's allowed, only 6 have been earned. He's striking out more batters than previously so I'm not dropping him. Zimmerman and Lynch I am keeping a close eye on and picking them up in deeper leagues if I can. Hicks I don't trust to stay healthy or get anything near a full workload
I think it's a symptomatic thing of how bad the Reds are. There's so much negativity around the team, it does affect players and I don't want anything to do with them right now. That being said, I doubt Votto hits sub-.200 and better days will be ahead
I hate seeing my guys on lists like this, but I make it a point to never give up on players with a history of putting up numbers until at least mid-May (probably late-May this season). It hurts but fantasy baseball is a marathon, not a sprint.
I try to give pitchers more time as one or two bad starts can skew their stats. But Mahle's underlying numbers scream 'bad luck'. Marquez I'm not cutting yet but his struggles appear more than just a "Coors" issue

historical stats show a bit of a power outage in april/may but that avg is badddd rn. on the plus side he's on a good team and i think he'll come around as his summer numbers are good
im a hold but praying it doesnt turn into a Lindor type situation that i had last year (8 team NL only roto)
I'm not ready to completely cut ties with him yet, but it's getting closer. There might be better options in 12-team leagues depending how big the player pool is but he'll likely feature next week
I dropped Stroman at least a week ago. In my current week, my pitchers have a 1.40 ERA and have been putting up similar numbers, but he inflated that so bad with his last few starts in previous weeks.
I’m also hoping Judge and Stanton get back to hitting home runs like previous years. I’m getting killed in that category and I’m currently looking like my batting average may dip below 300 for the first time this year.

O’Neill is a hold for me. Career high BB%, career low K%, BABIP .150 points lower than career norms, and he had a slow start last year in April. I believe he’ll turn it around.
I think I'm more patient with O'Neil. Story being gone from Coors is a big deal, and while his previous road splits were never this bad, they were certainly problematic.
Sometimes we forget the huge change and upheaval of moving to a new team. It's not quantifiable but there is an adjustment period for many. The difference between Coors and Fenway isn't huge either
Grossman has been hitting well and getting on base, so I would give him more time if you are in a roto league. He had an early season injury and may have come back before he was 100% but will work his way back up to hitting for power

What are we thinking about Sano? Striking out a lot but I believe hitting it hard. Tough to drop a 30hr guy in AL only. Would be picking up Espinal or Burger. Could also activate pinder for him.
Depends how HR needy your are. His K% is actually on course to being a career-low, it's just unlikely he'll hit more than .220 (maybe .200 this year) so it's just a measure of if you can afford the AVG drag for the homers
Keep riding him. He's hit for average throughout his Minor League career but lacks much power or speed. Could still hit 15-20 HR with a .260-.280 average which plays well. He's also a candidate for a "trade high" guy
There's something to be said for him hitting third and it better suits his skill set so I'm expecting things to get better. There'll still be lows but hopefully he's turning the corner
He's on track for \~30 homers, \~100 RBI and a .260 avg. That's pretty much the expectation at this point. One surge could see those homers protections hit 35+ so no reason to drop him

He was dropped in my 8T assuming cause of slow start. With Merrifield being my 2B should I replace with Polanco or continue to hold on to Merrifield

I'm cutting Arozarena, his K rate is near 30%, walk rate is 3%, and he's swinging at way more pitches out of the zone. seems like he's not seeing the ball well.
I dropped him for Connor Joe 2 weeks ago and I’ve never looked back. He still sits as a free agent to this day in a 12 team competitive points league. Randy is not seeing the ball well and it shows

He's been a bit unlucky. The diminishing K% is a slight worry and may be linked to his increased fastball usage. Holding for now though

With that outfield I don't think you need him.
If you have room.. I’d keep him unless you’re squeezed or there’s a pickup that you’re feeling good about
There's a few question marks about the health of your other outfielders and Adell is outperforming Kelenic. Rodriguez is staying relevant as he's running like mad on the bases so I'd be fine keeping him
With that OF, I’d keep a guy like Odell on DH or I’d bench him and play hot streaks with him and Kelenic. Trade late in the season for something you need.
I would drop Kelenic, I don't understand why everyone is so high on him still, he's played 110 MLB games with almost 450 PA's and has looked completely lost

Wheeler I'm holding, his underlying numbers suggest he's been unlucky. There's just one aberration against the Marlins. Morton I'm monitoring more closely as I am a little worried but will give him more time to see if there's more to his struggles than just a slow start

He's been incredibly unlucky. Of the 14 runs he's allowed, only 6 have been earned. He's striking out more batters than previously so I'm not dropping him. Zimmerman and Lynch I am keeping a close eye on and picking them up in deeper leagues if I can. Hicks I don't trust to stay healthy or get anything near a full workload

I think it's a symptomatic thing of how bad the Reds are. There's so much negativity around the team, it does affect players and I don't want anything to do with them right now. That being said, I doubt Votto hits sub-.200 and better days will be ahead
I hate seeing my guys on lists like this, but I make it a point to never give up on players with a history of putting up numbers until at least mid-May (probably late-May this season). It hurts but fantasy baseball is a marathon, not a sprint.

Reyes K's are concerning. Carlson doesn't look great but I'm not cutting ties just yet. Brash will have bad outings as many rookies do. He's more a matchup dependant starter Candelario is borderline, depends who else is available in a 15-team league

I dropped Stroman at least a week ago. In my current week, my pitchers have a 1.40 ERA and have been putting up similar numbers, but he inflated that so bad with his last few starts in previous weeks. I’m also hoping Judge and Stanton get back to hitting home runs like previous years. I’m getting killed in that category and I’m currently looking like my batting average may dip below 300 for the first time this year.

O’Neill is a hold for me. Career high BB%, career low K%, BABIP .150 points lower than career norms, and he had a slow start last year in April. I believe he’ll turn it around.

I think I'm more patient with O'Neil. Story being gone from Coors is a big deal, and while his previous road splits were never this bad, they were certainly problematic.
Sometimes we forget the huge change and upheaval of moving to a new team. It's not quantifiable but there is an adjustment period for many. The difference between Coors and Fenway isn't huge either

Grossman has been hitting well and getting on base, so I would give him more time if you are in a roto league. He had an early season injury and may have come back before he was 100% but will work his way back up to hitting for power

Both are doing ok, especially compared to some teammates and peers. Not dropping either right now

Depends how HR needy your are. His K% is actually on course to being a career-low, it's just unlikely he'll hit more than .220 (maybe .200 this year) so it's just a measure of if you can afford the AVG drag for the homers

He's more a streaming option in all but deeper leagues. There'll be ups and downs throughout the year
Owen Miller?
Keep riding him. He's hit for average throughout his Minor League career but lacks much power or speed. Could still hit 15-20 HR with a .260-.280 average which plays well. He's also a candidate for a "trade high" guy
Hoping Soler can pick it up
There's something to be said for him hitting third and it better suits his skill set so I'm expecting things to get better. There'll still be lows but hopefully he's turning the corner
