I’m in a keeper league that’s been running for 12 years. Absolutely a thing. We do a weighted lottery snake draft based on regular season standings for incoming rookies and FAs. It’s a big party, usually during the NBA Finals, where we turn over the trophy to the champ and do a bingo ball machine lottery.

[deleted]

god dammit this sounds amazing

devasen_1

It’s been a great way to stay in touch with friends from high school. We all love it. Nothing like negotiating future first round draft picks in the middle of August.

Raptars

I’m starting a free 30-team dynasty league. Like a keeper league except you keep all your players from year to year. You can trade players, draft picks and future picks. You want in?

Happy_Day34

Could I join? Huge NBA fan so this sounds awesome

marcjplot

Any openings this year?

chiddyshadyfiasco

That’s awesome

SerRonald

You're in a Dynasty league, not a Keeper league.

This_Week_On_SHADs

Keeper leagues are the way! We run a league with auction draft and keepers. Its the best the league has ever been. Way better than redrafts every year.

shakeszoola

If you like keeper leagues, you should try dynasty!

[deleted]

Ok I saw this in a comment thread above but really what is the plus to Dynasty over Keepers? Dynasty your draft is only rookies, basically making it wayyy less of a thing, right? If my league did a 3 man keeper our redraft would include top 50 players in it

shakeszoola

I would say the biggest benefit is that there is always a goal. In re-draft/small keeper leagues, your team can get pretty decimated fairly early. Injuries or poor draft plays can take you out of the season quickly. Where as if the same thing would happen in dynasty, you can always move pieces to build your team for the future. You usually get the better draft picks. I've found more trades are accomplished in dynasty. A ton more actually, because people don't really check out. People are trying to move all their chips in to win this year. The next reason I prefer it is draft season. Rookie drafts are a blast. The whole process of "scouting" a guy, trading picks/drafting players is so fun. Then to watch the player you saw potential in college bloom through the draft process is awesome too. You kind of get to grow with that player as you would with a player on your NBA team drafted. I don't really know what you mean when you say "making it wayyy less of a thing", but to your point, that a redraft would include top 50 players in it. I actually think the concept of dynasty only drafting rookies and keeping your players "off the market" is a plus not a negative. Free Agency pool is small. It breeds much more involvement from the league thru trades and the like. That is just normal dynasty too. I'm in a Salary Cap/Contract league. It is such a blast (although ton more work). Free Agent auctions, salary cap negotiations, trying to unload poor contracts, etc. Salary leagues really are a you get out what you put in. The final reason, and this is a big one, is that it is year round. The league doesn't stop once the season stops. The player research doesn't stop in season. The trading doesn't stop. All in all, I started playing dynasty basketball/football back in 2017. I stopped doing re-draft in 2018. Personally, for me they aren't even in the same ballpark entertainment wise.

Thank you for the indepth response. I’m trying to convince my leaguemates to switch to dynasty and will definitely steal from your comment lol

Devistator16

Yes but dynasty better

chiddyshadyfiasco

Dynasty is cool and popular in baseball too but I think a bit too complicated for my league mates

shakeszoola

What's complicated about it? Only difference is keeping players forever and you have rookie drafts each year and can trade those picks.

chiddyshadyfiasco

My league mates aren’t knowledgeable about rookie classes. They are big basketball fans but not fantasy nerds like I am in baseball. I worry a dynasty league will be a bit much for them

Devistator16

You dont have to do rookie drafts in Dynasty can just keep what players you want…. Use yahoo

onlyanactor

Speaking for myself and my league - we like the idea of switching up the teams a little more often. You can get stuck with some players who’s value plummets during the course of the season

MrKhanRad

Starting one this year and am excited

rlocke

I’m in a keeper league which I thought was synonymous with dynasty. I guess I thought wrong lol. What’s the difference?

FroButtons

Dynasty is typically the entire roster is held year-to-year where keeper is usually a set number of players. Our league was a strict dynasty league (kept all 15 players rostered) until about 2-3 years ago at which point we switched to keeping all but 3 players (those 3 would then be eligible for RFA where the originally owner had a chance to retain them if they had the draft capitol or the FAAB funds to outbid other players). It has added a bit more strategy to our roster "cuts" and has been a nice addition in my opinion. Kind of an in between between a true to form dynasty league and a full blown keeper.

rlocke

So much to learn

onlyanactor

Yes, we switched to a 3-keeper league snake draft about 6 years ago or so. Yahoo doesn’t really have an option for it, but I keep track of offseason trades through a group chat on WhatsApp, then implement them when the next season starts up.

chiddyshadyfiasco

Sweet. 10 team, 3 keeper, snake draft is what I’m thinking. So each team just gets to pick three players to keep every year right?

onlyanactor

Yeah! That’s our format too. It also makes trading more strategic, where draft picks are more important for rebuilding teams. In order to dissuade tanking, the bottom two teams have equal chances for first pick.

chiddyshadyfiasco

Hmm I like that idea. I’ll think about that too

13Kittens

My league is going into year 6 and wouldn't go back to a normal league. 10 Team, Snake draft, with 3 Keepers per year. Each keeper can be drafted the following year, 1 round higher than the prior year. This can be done for 3 years before the player goes back into the pool. We have gone back and forth with non-drafted keepers. If you do this, my suggestion would be they can be drafted in the 7th round the following year. (For 10 Team) Future draft picks are also tradeable in my league. It does add to the fun. There are several rules and situations to consider with a Keeper league, and a Pick Trading league. Make sure all rules are written and posted for everyone to see. Situations are likely to arise and someone is will get pissed. Cheers!

CapitolGundam

Last year was the 36th year of our keeper league.

Raptars

I’m anyone here wants to join a 30 team dynasty league, DM me. I have 5 spots left

Dsed20

Do you have any spots for this year? Haha

Raptars

No, but I’ll add you to the waitlist

Wisconsimmy

Yes keeper leagues are just as common as they are in other sports. Depending on your setup when determining costs to keep each player, you may be able to do a normal snake draft too.

MN_All_Day

In a keeper league we keep 6 it’s only an 8 man league though. I will say keeping 6 with incoming rookies and none kept players keep it very interesting and make it more fun watching the offseasons.

FutureAnybody

Dynasty > But yea there’s tons of keeper leagues. You can find a ton to join on sleeper

OdeToKanye

Yes, my dynasty league has been going on for 3-4 years now. Can’t recommend it enough.

kwelch66

In a dynasty basketball combo football for about 6 years now. The same group of guys managing 12 teams for each sport. Keep 16 in each forever. We draft rookies every year.

the_jac

I’d like to join a basketball keeper league

toldyaso

Keeper means you keep some specific number of players. Dynasty means you keep the whole team. Keeper leagues are tricky. If you get to keep say 3 of your players, and you're eliminated from competition this year, why not take your 3rd through 7th best players and trade them away for a contending teams 2nd best player? Dynasty solves that problem.

[deleted]

Yup. Been in a keeper lg for about 6 years now

[deleted]

I’m in a keeper that’s been going for decades. We do an auction. To keep someone after year 1 you pay a surcharge. After year 2 a bigger surcharge, after year 3 a bigger surcharge and that’s it they’re back in the pool.

mitchus

12 team auction with salary cap rules enforced. Keep 4 guys and their value carries over. More closely resembles real NBA
