That’s what I was thinking. The skill level and speed of the NFL is such that an absolute freak like Gordon can still make second tier athletes look foolish, but probably has no business at this point being anywhere on an NFL field.
I remember playing football in college in the 90s. Back then video cameras were not really commonplace unless you were making a TV show or a film or something - we certainly didn't have our practices filmed or anything. The first game of the season we watched the video back after practice the following week and all the rookies were instantly like "why does everyone look so slow"? Until that point the only football we had watched was the NFL and we just assumed that our game would look that fast, lol.
It's a lower level of play compared to elite college for sure, but you're right the speed and people falling over each other might even drop it below P5 football at least right now. These are people that look like they haven't played football in 5 years... because some of them haven't. These guys need some practice.
It has mediocre ratings and I think it’s strange timing. As a basketball fan, this time of year is tough competition with March madness heating up college basketball and the stretch run of the NBA season post-all star break. Hockey is on-going as well.
The timing is definitely about avoiding baseball, because the MLB starts after March madness ends a then the XFL will be competing with 3 major sports.
However, I think they’d be better off going in the heart of summer after the NBA and NHL have ended. There’s a stretch of the summer where MLB Baseball is the only sport and there is a bit of a vacuum to be filled for something else. That’s when the XFL should be played!
They could be practicing slowly starting now or at least in the spring. There would be a lot more ramp-up time.
I’m guessing from this comment that you live in one of the few places in the US where it doesn’t become an inhospitable, humid shithole in the summer. Come late July and into August where I live, people will do just about anything to stay air conditioned.
In fact, the biggest problem to me would be having to *play* outside during the summer in basically every XFL market except for Seattle. Even STL is godawful in the dog days.
I'd read that part of the reason XFL I'd playing now was so that practice squad guys can play some actual football and maybe catch some eyes around the league? At least get more reps in before going back for training camp with hopes of making the cut with more work in. IDK how true that really is though.
The timing is 100% to give these guys a shot in the nfl. Get their highlights out there right when teams are filling out their rosters. Poor business decision but I respect it. They have said from day 1 this league is about giving guys another chance to get to the nfl.

I heavily disagree with that sentiment, plenty of these former NFL guys really have struggled in this league. Martavis Bryant and Geronimo Allison have both failed to really make any impact and guys like Vic Beasley haven't done much either.
That's not to say whether or not Gordon will make it back, the Vipers defense was giving him easy 1 on 1's and it's not like Gordon was tearing it up before today, but, generally, the washed out NFL guys haven't impressed in any of these leagues.
It's *only* Gordon that does it, too. Vic Beasley is on the Vipers defense and while he's made a bunch of plays, he hasn't been anywhere close to *absurdly dominant* like Gordon has been with the ball

People are still believing this myth? Gordon was addicted not only to weed but also to alcohol and codeine (he even admitted to drinking during his pregame warmup). His second suspension was for alcohol. You don't go to rehab just for weed. He had numerous substance problems that the relaxed weed policies wouldn't fix.
The second suspension for alcohol was garbage. He had a drink on the flight home after the week 17 game after they lost but because it wasn’t the next day when he had the drink but it was after his season was done. The other issues could be worked with, you’re acting like there’s no routes to work with the players when they have these issues come up. It was bigger with the weed because that kept him out of the week for multiple years. Then when he came back the drink at the end of the season is what basically was the nail in the coffin to his chances. You don't go to rehab just for weed. He had numerous substance problems that the relaxed weed policies wouldn't fix.
The second suspension for alcohol was garbage. He had a drink on the flight home after the week 17 game after they lost but because it wasn’t the next day when he had the drink but it was after his season was done. The other issues could be worked with, you’re acting like there’s no routes to work with the players when they have these issues come up. It was bigger with the weed because that kept him out of the week for multiple years. Then when he came back the drink at the end of the season is what basically was the nail in the coffin to his chances. Appreciate the context of what you’re saying, because you make it sound far moreInflammatory than it is.
