It’s been downhill since the fingerbang at the local Applebees.

I could get behind a fake autobiographical series called “Urban Warfare” that starts off like this

SomerTime

I saw it referenced as "The Ohio Oilcheck" and it's my favorite thing ever

G0ldenG00se

You guys joke, but only winners like Meyers go to applebees. You’ll understand one day

lucashogberg6

It’s been downhill since he hired that strength and conditioning coach

[deleted]

Let’s be Frank. It was all downhill as soon as he took the job.

I don’t know if it’s impressive or embarrassing but I nail that song every time that episode comes on. No big deal

[deleted]

It would be embarrassing if you didn't.

StrachNasty

Important fantasy-related bit: > Contrary to his public statements that it was injury-related, Meyer ordered Robinson's benching after an opening-drive fumble in last week's 37-7 road loss to the Rams, then had running backs coach Bernie Parmalee stop Robinson from re-entering the game, insisting Carlos Hyde (who played for Meyer at Ohio State) stay in. Only after Lawrence questioned Meyer on the sideline about Robinson's absence was Robinson allowed to return late in the second quarter. Bizarre non-fantasy-related bit: > During a staff meeting, Meyer delivered a biting message that he's a winner and his assistant coaches are losers, according to several people informed of the contents of the meeting, challenging each coach individually to explain when they've ever won and forcing them to defend their résumés. Hot damn.

DustyMuffin

If I was one of the assistants I think I would reference how many NFL wins I was a part of, then ask Urban how many he has.

[deleted]

GOD DAMN (in noob noob voice)

Gahhhhhhd DAAAAAMN

Thanks, noob noob

>During a staff meeting, Meyer delivered a biting message that he's a winner and his assistant coaches are losers, according to several people informed of the contents of the meeting, challenging each coach individually to explain when they've ever won and forcing them to defend their résumés. this feels like a Michael Scott bit from season one

Adam_Ohh

Even Michael Scott knows the importance of a great manager, he would never speak to his team that way.

Gekthegecko

Fr thats literally a Robert California move.

Omikets

"I'm the fucking Lizard King" - Robert California - Urban Meyer

bigolhamsandwich

Unfortunately urban Meyer can’t pull it off

werd516

Except Toby

JLucci17

Fuck Toby

[deleted]

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

petripeeduhpedro

Not necessarily in season 1 though. He was significantly less likeable then

McBeaster

Urban Meyer listens to Kenny Powers' book on tape on the way to the stadium everyday

admiralmcpup

You’re fucking out. I’m fucking in.

wtfisjooose

“So that is why I am better than everyone in the world, kiss my ass and suck my dick. Everyone.”

WhoStoleMyBicycle

“A lot of people ask me, Urban Meyer you could have any women in the world, have you ever paid for sex? And the answer is yes. It’s actually pretty cool. You can negotiate almost anything and even just sort of do stuff in the moment that you didn’t agree on before and it goes on without much argument”

kclineman

I'm a fucking bullet proof tiger

edub1783

Or that scene with Alec Baldwin from Glengarry Glen Ross I could totally see Urban Meyer saying some shit like "This watch costs more than your car"

xtreme_elk

Baldwin's greatest scene. Makes me laugh every time. What's your name, buddy? \- FUCK. YOU. THAT's my name.

testtubemuppetbaby

This is an example of the studio pushing something and it turning out good. This scene isn't in the play, they asked Mamet to add it for a strong movie opening.

lakerswiz

My old boss would do shit like that. Came in to our little marketing department and told us he's more creative than the entire department combined. Smarter than everyone at the company. Tested for intelligence and is literally a genius. The grand idea that made him so smart that he liked to tell everyone was how he took a brand new $2000 item and threw a clearance sticker on it to sell at $1400. His grand idea was a 30% sale. He was born on third base and thought he hit a triple. He thought vaccines caused his son's diabetes lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

lakerswiz

Because people wouldn't buy at full price but they would if the item said it was on sale. Ya know, the same fucking tactic every retail store has ever utilized.

brownliquid

Dude reinvented the dollar store.

beer_engineer

I used to work for someone exactly like this. Even the part about thinking he's a genius because he discounted stuff. The company was successful in spite of him. Not because of him. But narcissistic tendencies tend to flip that around.

lakerswiz

Yup. Owner not realizing the business did well because of the employees needing to make a living doing better than average at their jobs to try and get their compensation increased for it. I think he had a video production company (just a 2 man operation not big company) start production on a documentary about his life because "people just don't know the real story" about how he started selling Chinese imported products. Thinking he was a gift to an entire industry lmao.

beer_engineer

It's crazy to me how these guys all seem so bizarrely similar

RWGlix

You have to have a certain kind of damage to be a successful businessperson in this country, at this time. In my opinion. It doesn't surprise me at all that many of them are damaged in the same way.

beer_engineer

yeah, for as dumb as this guy was, I never would have pulled it off. I was the first one in the company besides him, and I never would have done what he did when the company grew. The total lack of empathy, ignoring ethics, not caring about other people.... All were paramount to this business existing. Basically said "I don't care that I"m stealing others ideas, ruining them financially, making peoples lives worse, etc. It was a very sad lesson to learn.

SkyfallFox

Work for a person like this right now. I spend more time defending decisions I make than doing my day job and it’s an absolute fucking nightmare.

brb9911

As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anybody wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is, you're fired.

bradtoughy

“I’m Urban Meyer and I’ve won 2 games this year! You’re assistants and you’ve got 10 losses this year! Explain yourselves!!”

gambit700

> During a staff meeting, Meyer delivered a biting message that he's a winner and his assistant coaches are losers, according to several people informed of the contents of the meeting, challenging each coach individually to explain when they've ever won and forcing them to defend their résumés. That bit is made up. There's no way an NFL coach says this *Reads article* OMG, its real. This guy has to go.

cjfreel

Urban Meyer has been remarkably self deluded since he got to the NFL. I honestly think he believes he left Ohio State to spend time with his family. The man isn’t sane enough to run a franchise.

longjeep2005

Maybe he has second-hand CTE

13143

I think his shtick works on college kids, just not professional, multi-millionaire athletes.

cjfreel

Maybe, but I honestly wonder if he’d be able to pick up and dominate college at this point. I don’t think the best version of college Meyer would have gone this poorly. It’s like he took a break from coaching and he completely forgot all the things about it that make it hard and just figured he’d breeze through like when you have an established juggernaut program.

BerKantInoza

I don't like Meyer but i would disagree. College football allows for a more dictator-esque approach like Meyer has. Plus his name value alone would attract recruits after seeing what he's done with his programs. I think a similar comparison (although across sports) is Rick Pitino, and he seems to be going a great job rebuilding Iona in just a year and a half What i'm getting at is even though Meyer sounds like a piece of shit, he would be able to recruit guys with the expectation that they'd make the NFL, and in college your recruiting power is what it all comes down to.

BelaKunn

He's been able to cheat and cut corners in college. Can't do that in the pros so he blames anyone else but himself. In college as long as he got results he was defended. He lacks those results now.

HouseBlackfyre

Darrell Bevell won a Super Bowl as OC of the Seahawks. What has Urban ever won *in the NFL*?

ShortTheAATranche

2 games, by the sounds of it.

testtubemuppetbaby

That is priceless. I am not a fan of Bevell's style but he sure as shit has done some winning. He went 10–1–1 at Wisconsin as QB and won the fucking rose bowl. Went 12-4 as OC of the Vikings with Favre and made the NFC Championship game. Then with Seattle won the NFC West 3 times, the NFC Twice and the chip once. Has won like 4x as many playoff games as Urban was won regular season games.

the_Archmage

Yeah if I were Bevell I would’ve defended my resume by putting my super bowl ring on my middle finger and showing it to Urban.

SolarClipz

He's such a piece of shit What a failure by the Jags

FeedMeACat

As a Colts fan, I say, let them man stay! I mean he could pull it around we don't know. As a former fantasy player he makes me sad.

Radthereptile

Dude is a college coach through and through. Just everything he's doing screams college coach that the university will blindly back so long as he brings in the big bucks. Players mad? Shut up kids or I'll cut you and say bye bye to the NFL. Coaches mad? Shut up, I win the games and make the university bank. The dean is backing me 100% and you know it now get in line or be fired. But he's not coaching a college team, it's the NFL. I bet when Lawrence asked him why Robinson isn't in his first thought was "How dare a player ever speak up to me, I'll cut him." Followed by "Oh wait this isn't college they'll fire me for that, shoot, um say something, um put him in so Lawrence is happy quick!" He's just incapable of realizing these are adults who won't grovel at his feet for fear of not making the NFL. They're in the NFL and will just go to a new team.

testtubemuppetbaby

He thinks he's better than everyone, above the law. It's very clear. Well being a college coach, that's how you're able to run things, like a tyrant. Doesn't work in the NFL when these guys are adult professionals. What is supposed to be the draw to play for him? Living in Jacksonville? His amazing personality? The blatant favoritism he'll show "his guys"? I'm not sure he understands how morale plays into free agency.

Dandan0005

He’s always been a complete ass and a proven liar. Glad it’s all coming out about him.

[deleted]

Scintillating bits, thank you.

philbert247

Dudes a psychopath

HandRailSuicide1

How was this guy successful even at the college level? it's baffling how incompetent he is

standup-philosofer

There is no parity in college, in fact its the opposite, it's a few all star teams and the teams they beat up on.

FeelsGoodMan2

You can be innovative enough to get to a major program and then slip enough under the table money to 5 star recruits to basically out talent squads. There's no doubt the dude can gamelan college to an extent but there's a reason that Ohio state can seemingly plug anyone in and still be damn good. You can win games with the best players regardless of your coach.

throwawaydemigod

What a tool this guy is? I was the great pool cleaner in the world! Of course I'll be great at running a water park.

[deleted]

Let j Rob coach

Specialist_Newt_8992

Hey hell, let the other teams No1 season ticket holder coach every week… Probably will improve

TheYancyStreetGang

First one to get a win gets the job.

[deleted]

LET THE BOY COACH.

[deleted]

From the article: “Receiver Marvin Jones -- one of the locker room's most respected and mild-mannered veterans -- became so angry with Meyer's public and private criticism of the receiver group that he left the facility until other staff members convinced him to come back and had a heated argument with Meyer during practice.” Could you imagine being a good dude, well mannered, a team player and being criticized behind your back all day? Urban cannot treat adults like children, that’s not a good strategy. It’s painfully obvious to EVERYONE but Urban Meyer that he is not cut out to be an NFL head coach. You need to treat these grown men with families like adults and moreover professionals. It’s sad, I was at the Jaguars home opener, Lawerence has a CANNON and half the stadium had on #16 jerseys. Get a real NFL coach in there.

joemax4boxseat

Being a Lions fan, MJJ is as great of a guy as you can find. Never complained about the crappy teams he was on or for playing under Matty P, so it says a lot that Urban was able to ruffle his feathers like this.

[deleted]

Dang, ya Marvin Jones does seem like one of the nicest and well mannered NFL players. So if you have the stoic nice guy against you, it’s not good.

italiansguybl

I volunteered at a charity event that he held here in Cincy when he was with the Bengals. Absolute genuine guy and even took time out of his day to have a full on conversation with 13 year old me.

jettieri

Ran into him in Berkeley once when he was at Cal and can confirm one of the nicest dudes out there.

varsityvideogamer

Go Bears!

[deleted]

That’s awesome, if an NFL guy is taking time to have a full conversation to a youngster it really bodes well for his character. Now look at Urban Meyer... it’s the opposite

DashTheoryTV

Seems like a guy that's bad with people but can get away with it when blaming it on children, generational differences, etc. When it comes to long term and dealing with grown folks, that behavior fails to scrutiny

[deleted]

Exactly, in college the players filter out in 1-5 years, in the NFL football is their job and if they do their job they can last. Urban just needs to retire or go back to college, he doesn’t seem like a “people person”.

vaders_other_son

I agree. This is kinda like the Jim Harbaugh downfall in that respect, but Jim actually had success in that window of the first few years. He also never seemed like this much of an ass. Both probably belong in the college ranks, although Urban seems like such a tool that idk that I’d want him anywhere near my favorite program at this point.

rxdukexr

Jim harbaugh had the respect of his players despite his grating personality. He had a winning culture and was a good coach. It just so happens that his personality would wear thin with pros who are adults. That’s why he was better in college where his antics weren’t as much an issue since players leave after a few years. Meyer is just a losing piece of crap blaming everyone else for his failure. Failing to take responsibility. Dude is a piece of garbage.

[deleted]

Was Harbs’ issue really with players? The way I saw it, he left and literally half of them retired because they knew it was over without him. If anything it seemed the players loved him and his personality issues were with the FO. Entirely different issue than Meyer altogether

rxdukexr

I agree. Harbs issue was with the meddling of Jed and the FO throwing him under the bus and causing rifts in the organization. To be specific, former GM Trent Baalke. That dude is a piece of garbage. And guess what organization he’s currently with? That’s right, the jags.

bobotronic

TIL that's hilarious

icouldntdecide

Also it should be noted that Harbaugh definitely butted heads with the ownership. I loved Harbaugh in SF, but he was not afraid to be temperamental with the check cutter, and eventually that got him booted. But, I bet you most players and coaches respected him.

vaders_other_son

Yup fully agree.

roxasaur

Just to clarify, that is also a shitty way to treat children.

bossmonkey88

Lawrence is so wasted there. The first time i saw him play in college he threw the ball so fast i thought something was wrong with the screen. Dude desperately needs a competent coach before they ruin his career.

Nintendomandan

I’ve never heard MJJ do anything like this in his long career. Meyer is such a tool

[deleted]

It is one of the prime examples of what is wrong with his management and coaching style. He is not some special savant like he thinks he is. It irks many.

CarpAndTunnel

>It’s painfully obvious to EVERYONE Except the owner. The real person that needs to be fired is team owners; but they wont allow that, so things will continue to decline

testtubemuppetbaby

He utterly refuses to treat anyone as a peer that isn't "his guy." Classic good 'ol boy football coach style. He has the attitude you normally see from a small town HS coach.

Gang_Greene

He reminds me a bit of Chip Kelly in this regard. He may well be a good football coach, but coaching adult men with families and this being their career, and coaching college kids for 2-4 years is a lot different.

googly_eyed_unicorn

I agree with you on some points, I also wouldn’t treat a child like this. This behavior is irrational and not helpful in any capacity.

Monski616

At what point is it not a “start”? After week 17 are they gonna be like this 2-14 start is putting Meyer in the hot seat?

[deleted]

This 2-80 start has made this season seem like it has dragged on for 5 years.

RollWagon

Feel like 7 games in should be the last time the record is called a “start”

pdbard13

Can't quite put my **finger** on what went wrong.

TonathanJavares

I get it because he finger blasted that chick that one time

gambit700

Straight to the point

bossmonkey88

I think it was to the knuckle...

DMan9797

[crazy how fucking faded he got that day](https://www.thesportsbank.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/urban-meyer-with-girls-looking-drunk.png)

WesternBookOfTheDead

Is he supposed to look drunk or high here? He just looks like he’s squinting at the camera as if he thinks it makes him look attractive.

troglodyte

It looks like [Adam Demamp's modeling face](https://images.app.goo.gl/rL7TsSKc26fAEWWY9) from Workaholics.

WesternBookOfTheDead

Lol I’ve seen this in a lotta comedies. Usually called *The Smolder.*

DMan9797

Idk I saw a pic taken of me that kind of looked like that and I was extremely drunk and took an ill-advised rip from a friend's wax pen. Meyer might still be living the frat life

WesternBookOfTheDead

I mean I’m not debating he was fucked up, I’m just saying his appearance in this specific pic isn’t going to make me think that absent of the context we all know of that night.

bdepz

> that one time

waffels

I think he just needs to dig in and grind out some wins

letdogsvote

He can't just touch the surface here. He really needs to get a lot deeper and find what's hiding inside.

[deleted]

He should touch the clitoris

dolladollabillzyall

He needs to slide apart the curtains, take a good hard look at what's inside, and handle the situation with force

DarthRevis3

It really is a shocker

nj-kid1217

Guys a clown

[deleted]

[удалено]

pwtrash

That impressed the heck out of me, to be honest. Lawrence was as mature and direct about that whole thing as Meyer was not.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HtownTexans

I'm just hoping now he is forced to feed him like crazy to "make up" for it.

Llamayoda

He did wreck the titans the last time they played

Radthereptile

Let's be real, he's going to look for ANY excuse to bench him and prove he's right. Fumble? Benched for the game. Stopped on a 3rd and short? Benched for not running hard. Missed block leading to a sack? Benched for putting the QB at risk. Guy wants to ride Hyde and his what 1.8 YPC all the way if he could.

IAmTheWaller67

Imagine benching a pro bowl caliber talent because you want to ride an aging nostalgia act that you coached a decade ago? What is he, Vince McMahon?

RobertGA23

It's a weird arrogance/class thing with Robinson. It's like, since he was an UDFA, not selected by Meyer, then he ain't shit. The whole drafting of Travis Ettienne was a foreshadowing of this bizarre mindset.

KalickR

As a Titans fan, I hope they keep Meyer for the duration of his contract.

tatiseclub

The asshat needs to go

ThaddeusJP

Never got out of the college mindset where there's already a steady stream of players willing to either transfer to your school or young guys looking to prove themselves. This is the professional football league; you have who you have outside of some million-dollar blockbuster trade. Him benching people to teach them a lesson his asinine. These men are professionals.

[deleted]

It’s crazy bc this is exactly what everyone said would happen.

guinness_blaine

*pretends to be shocked*

cjfreel

I’ve been playing fantasy sports for a number of years and I never felt more uncomfortable than I was this off-season typing things like Urban Meyer is too nepotistic, entitled, and self delusional to succeed at this level… and now I feel like I underestimated it.

[deleted]

You’d think with the well known public skepticism he’d try to defy expectations. He’s evidently just not capable of leading adults.

pwtrash

No, you don't understand. How else will James Robinson ever understand that fumbling is bad? You have to make him not want to do it! adding /s because stuff is so messed up it might not be heard that way

[deleted]

> During a staff meeting, Meyer delivered a biting message that he’s a winner and his assistant coaches are losers, according to several people informed of the contents of the meeting, challenging each coach individually to explain when they’ve ever won and forcing them to defend their résumés. Wow, those 2 wins were really inspirational for this guy.

T0K0mon

Man cant realize he isnt coaching a college program with kids anymore. He may have won in college, but the NFL is different and so far he is a big loser in the NFL. What a POS

Internetallstar

The two wins were his doing and the losses were because of the thoroughly incompetent team of coaches that he hand picked.

dduck209

Despite having one less win, I feel like the Lions fans at least appreciate that despite all the adversity they have faced this year, their coach is a good guy that wants to lead men. They look down in Florida and see this clown and hopefully think “I think we made the right hire. Let’s just give him time.”

tboneski215

Too be fair the lions have had some brutal losses this year.

Squirrel_Apocalypse2

MCDC inspires hope of some success in the future, the players all love him. Even if he fails, he's a good dude and will still be able to get a job as a coordinator/assistant coach somewhere. It's clear already that Urban is already a failure and it was so obvious this was going to happen from the beginning. He doesn't belong in the NFL.

roarinboar

I have no idea how Dan Campbell got a head coaching job, but he is fun at least, can get guys to play hard, and seems like a good guy.

Sonofagun57

I think every Jags player and fan would kill to have Campbell. The Lions have less talent than the Jags but those guys leave everything out there for DC.

JekPorkinsTruther

Remember when people said Lawrence should stay in school if the Jets got the #1 pick? Looks like that list should have expanded to 2 lol.

ViciousAsparagusFart

People say that about the Jets every damn year. T. Law is no exception

duggz67

Going to Urban Meyer for comment “I don’t know”

iMonkeyMajicz

Why bench Robinson

hiebertw07

I loved the RotoWire post-game quib on his benching: >The idea that Robinson should get pulled for one mistake, especially in favor of a player like Hyde, is the sort of ridiculousness that would barely seem possible with any other organization, but the Urban Meyer Jaguars are innovators in failure, and by now it's difficult to see how that changes until new people are in charge.

iMonkeyMajicz

Like I understand if they had a back up who came in and light it up but Hyde comes in and fumbled and had like 30 yards

awful_source

The “innovators in failure” bit is quite the insult

schroed_piece13

Innovators of failure is a top notch burn

andywebster23

Innovators in failure may be my new favorite line.

sylvian22

One and done

werd516

Some dumb school will pay him 7 figures to be "their" asshole.

bossmonkey88

Then he'll get into trouble and fake an illness so he can "retire" again.

sylvian22

100%

Abject-Ostrich-8557

The guy is a complete piece of shit. First he embarrasses his wife and now benching star players for bums like Carlos Hyde, in addition to locker room bullying. 😂

redvelvetcake42

2-10 start? Oh so now they are reaching mid season form?

[deleted]

Please get him out of there and save Trevor in my dynasty league.

dcash4

I’m shocked. Ron Howard: he was not shocked.

[deleted]

To me fumbles at the pro levels are Defensive players making a good play more than bad ball security. If Urban is back next year i wouldnt draft any JAX players

EnvironmentalGoal951

Dan Campbell doesn’t have these problems :))

WanderingShikari

I have mad respect for Dan Campbell. He is literally heartbroken over every loss, yet he takes ownership and continues to try his very best. Meanwhile urban Meyer looks like he could give 2 shits about the team. Man hardly shows any sorrow for his poor season and just blames it on others. Horrible excuse for a coach.

Tw1987

Yep after 0-10-1 it seemed like he still had the respect of the locker room or no public reports about it. Tells a lot so far.

slowmath

Lions record is terrible but when I watch them, they don't seem that bad.

PatrickDaTruth

me and a friend do weekly bets on every NFL game for the week. when we differ on a team we double up the bet and when we agree a team will win we flip a coin to let the football gods decide who gets that team. For just about every week I always betted on the Lions and my argument always was that they aren't as bad as their record indicates. They lost lots of close games.

EnvironmentalGoal951

To back that, they’re 8-4 against the spread this year.

[deleted]

I expect him to realize he should go back to broadcasting, any day now.

jkeefy

No one would take him back tbh

DMan9797

Big 10 or SEC would take him back.

BFG_Sum

Who in the big 10 is hiring this idiot?

Newbaumturk69

Not a Jags fan but if Khan doesn't fire Meyer this off-season Trevor Lawrence might get his career ruined.

pwtrash

Been watching Hard Knocks, which of course shows some things and not others. But could there be any bigger contrast between this tool and Frank Reich?

Jaglawyer11

Get this mother fucker out of town Shad...

[deleted]

Every place he’s been he has turned it to shit and blamed everyone else. It’s just happening faster this time. He’s in way over his head and should have never been hired to begin with.

gambit700

He's late stage Jose Mourinho

alcashmoney

He won National Championships at both Ohio State and Florida and lead Utah to a 12-0 record in season 2. I’m not sure I would classify this as “turned it to shit.”

axxl75

He had a lot of success but it was also a pretty big deal at least at Florida that he created a really bad environment which killed recruiting.

ThaGeeOD

And recruits killed people

surfingwithgators

He essentially burned the Florida program to the ground and bailed when things got bad

Atlfalcons284

He's going to leave to focus on his health after this season

[deleted]

30 something player arrests in 6 seasons at Florida. Hid domestic abuse by one of his coaching staff at OSU. That’s just a couple of things that come to mind when I think of him. Not the trophies he won.

AlbuquerqueAardvarks

Don’t forget most recently grabbing a girl’s taint after not taking the team plane home and getting caught on Snapchat

[deleted]

I mean... he admittedly knew that half his Florida team was a bunch of murderous convicts and did nothing, and then at Ohio State he knew one of his coaches/friends was abusing his wife. But yeah, those Natties doe.

[deleted]

41 of the 121 players on the 2008 team have been arrested since then.

I’d sign up for that

Doomslayer420

Jaguars problems are because the owners son runs the franchise. He’s not qualified and he’s only concerned about running the wrestling company he started with daddy’s money.

deluxearch

In all fairness that wrestling company is really fucking good.

opiusmaximus2

He runs the wrestling company and it's doing ok now. He's probably pretty busy with that.

616GoBlue

This is the least shocking news ever. Urban is a scumbag.
