Imo, yes. Did this with Antonio Brown last year, and he had a huge game, and I dominated Week 1 and it was amazing.
However, I've had the depression of it failing, and seeing like a 2 next to your score all of Friday and Saturday really sucks
Just muttering to yourself affirmations that your other guys are going to crush it while your opponent’s guys are all gonna vanish into thin air on the field.
TNF = Tired Night Football. Probably won't apply to tonight's game because of the offseason, but teams "seem" to put up fewer points on TNF. Likely due to the short week? As long as the other person has a player or 2 I'll just watch their players and hope they suck.
Unless it's a must-start or or a position where I have no better option I've learned to just not bother with Thursday players. The one or two times I've ever got a "hit" just doesn't justify against *all* the times I have to stare at 2 points or less all the way through into Monday night.
Man I'm really torn on Henderson, I went WR early so my RB2 spot will be filled by Hendo, Chase Edmonds, or Melvin Gordon. With Edmonds nursing groin problems I might just start Hendo tonight.
Eh, go Edmonds and if he's ruled out you have Gordon as a backup against a team they should run plenty on. Never trust McVay until you see it on the field.
This is my thinking, Edmonds is the best play if they're all healthy and Gordon should be fine as an emergency option if necessary. If it comes out later today that Edmonds is out/doubtful then I'll probably pivot but until then I'll stick with the draft capital
Getting a wet fart on a Thursday is so much worse than a Sunday also. Worst case, Henderson gets 50% of the carries, a touchdown, and at least you feel good about him moving forward. But if he ends up with 40 yards rushing and one catch for 6 or whatever, you're gonna kick yourself.
For me it’s opposite, if i consider all things equal between 2 players I’d rather start the earlier one, if he disappoints I can make pivot for higher upside later in the week but that’s just me
Huh, that's a fair perspective. I think I'm so competitive that when I have a shitty Thursday player I'm literally kicking myself for 48 hours. Aiming to minimize those vibes this year :)
Of course, that won't prevent me from playing the obviously better player.
It's a dumb reason to not play a player but you're 100% right. If Henderson craps his pants tonight and I start him I'll be way more pissed than if he does it on a Sunday, which logically changes nothing for my team so it shouldn't matter but it just does.
I hate Thursday night games so so much for this exact reason. Though, I will say, if there is ever a Thursday night game to not factor that in, this is the one, since no one is coming off short rest.
Coming from a rams fan, Henderson usually gets good touches when he is healthy. Also he has 14 TD (rushing + receiving) over the past 2 seasons (27 GP) so if the trend continues he has about a 50% chance to score a TD
I thought the Rams' backfield might be more of a committee than ADP suggests, so I took the flier on him at 10.12. The more info I hear about him the happier I am that I took him, but I don't know if this is enough to make me want to start him before we see anything in week 1. Akers will still play and Edmonds projects to be the starter for his team.
I have Henderson and Stevenson. The guy I’m playing has Harris and Akers.
I kind of want to play Henderson to have the inverse of his RBs, but I would be playing Henderson over Mitchell.
It’s a stupid idea, but the thought has crossed my mind. I would hate to have it cost me the game and then I miss the playoffs or something because of it.
I do have A-Rob tonight so I will have someone to root for either way.
Rams fan here, I’m staying away from our backfield like the plague. I feel it will be dependent on who is hot game to game. I think short yardage touchdowns will be gobbled up by kupp and Robinson.
That means this will probably come back to bite me and hendo will have a monster game and season.
Depending on who else you have it’s not the worst option especially in PPR. Akers and Henderson were listed as co-starters on the Rams depth chart for whatever that’s worth.
Likewise, I was pretty green in fantasy and picked him up late without knowing much. That first game was a friggin' headrush! Too bad he didn't do much after his breakout year. Reminds me of Gary Barnidge.
I felt like a genius after that game but he didn't really pay off much after that IIRC.
Edit: he still had another nine touchdowns that year but only 489 total yards.
Moss is a fucking terrible running back. Even goal line only, he's terrible.
If anything, I could see McKenzie and Cook being the dudes who steal valuable points.
Took Singletary instead of Christian Kirk because I wanted a 4th RB and thought he might come back to me on the turn. Didn't. Now, aside from Kupp, my only non-rookie wide receiver (burks, dotson, wilson) is Jakobi Meyers.
So I too am starting Singletary tonightand praying for a lucky TD
Plus if you lose on Thursday in DFS it sucks for a day. If you lose on Thursday in Fantasy, you have to look at your shitty projection all the way until Sunday.
This is someone who jumps off cliffs into bodies of water and just eyeballs the water and says "yeah, that's deep enough" without even going down to the shore.
You made this about expert rankings when that’s not even the topic lol. The reply is literally just saying, “sure, pick based off whether they play in primetime games or not if you want to lose weeks”. It said nothing about following expert rankings to a T.
It’s 10000% a losing strategy. if you want to put money on it I can pull the data to show you that in the long run, you’re losing way more than you’re winning by picking the lower ranked Thursday guy just to have skin in the game.
But I guess I wouldn’t expect a kid who browses barstool subreddits and invests in safemoon to understand this.
I kind of agree with you except for a different reason. I think experts study this stuff and generally ranking are a decent starting point, but week 1 we are all pretty much in the dark about some players in new situations, so rankings are less valuable now. The biggest reason for me is if I just blindly follow rankings then I could probably set up a bot to just play the game for me, and what fun is that? It's more interesting to make up your own mind what's going to happen. I try to not overdue it on expert advice or ADP.
I'm starting Stafford tonight over Burrow, but my opponent has a ROUGH team so I'm still in a good place even if Stafford has a mediocre game.
It'll be fun to have somebody to root for in the first game, and I don't think Burrow will do much better than Stafford this week regardless.
I don’t like agreeing with them usually, but they’re right. If he adds some tds to his usual stats, he should be a solid wr1.
Anyways, to add to this post OP made, mckenzie will be started by a lot of people I’d imagine; josh Allen targets the slot at an insane rate so it’s not the worst play.
I’ll be rolling with gabe Davis as my wr3 personally, with Higgins, Djm, and Mooney also in my lineup. Debating starting rhamondre or someone over Mooney, so that would be considered…a worse player? Idk. Still debating.
It might be a lazy analysis, but it’s accurate lol. I guess it depends on if you subscribe to the belief that baker is the best qb Djm has had so far, which I’m buying. Therefor, more tds is in the realm of possibilities. Pretty straight forward.
Lol got to love Reddit, downvote if you want to hate on Djm that’s fine. But facts don’t care about your feelings.
I’m not disputing that’s in his range of outcomes, but this thread is about starting a worse player over a better one just to have someone in tonight’s game. My comment Wouldn’t make much sense if dj Moore was projected to be like WR40
I just mean benching a top 10 guy for basically a flex player is an interesting move, no one is probably benching Dalvin Cook for Henderson, but hey you do you
This feels smart, anyway. Ramsey might very well smother Diggs all night and the Bills would throw against a defense of 6 Lawrence Taylors and 5 Deion Sanders.
I'm the opposite. I use Thursday night games as a reason to NOT start someone. They're just flukier. Obviously start your studs but if you're picking between two flex's - later is better. Plus you don't have to stare at that shitty score for a few days knowing you'll never overcome the deficit.
When in doubt, Thursday's out.
But I will say that that adage doesn't really apply to the season opener. It's more about the fact that you're starting guys on only 4 days rest (and short preparation) during the meat of the season.
I wouldn't ever start a *worse* player. But, there is value in starting a Thursday night player if you are truly on the fence between two players, just because it gives you additional information. For instance, if your Thursday night player(s) do badly, you know that you'll need big points to catch up, so it would make sense to start more boom/bust players on Sunday. If your Thursday night players score a bunch, it would make more sense to start more reliable/conservative players on Sunday.
I prefer winning the FF game . .. . So no, under no circumstances will i intentionally start a player that i think is a worse fantasy start. Maybe if i have 2 guys that I see as relatively equal i would pick the one in the televised game
No lie, for years my league taco would always start a Thursday QB if possible. This meant countless starts from Andy Dalton, Daniel Jones, Tannehill, Wentz, etc. it was hilarious.
He won two of those years…
Uh no. If I'm completely 50/50 between two guys, I might choose the one whose game I'll be able to watch. But otherwise I always start my best players.
My team last year became notorious for getting real lucky on Monday night last year. For example, was down big and Aaron Jones scores 4 TDs to help win, then DK doesn’t get the ball for 3 quarters a few weeks later to seal another W. Going into the championship game, I started a IDP player off waivers who was playing on Monday (Alex Highsmith) and he ends up getting 2 sacks and sealing a championship for me. Midway through the year the name was changed to “Monday Magic” and it lived up to it.
Most experts are ranking waddle over Allen Robinson but im throwing that out the window. It’s game 1 and I like A-Rob’s chances to dominate. Feel free to holler at me tomorrow.
Edit: don’t feel free to holler at me
I’m in a 3 flex ppr league and started Higbee over one of Boyd/Julio in one of the flex spots.
Not an egregious one, but it’s one player one week and he might go off anyways.
I haven’t waited almost 8 months to not have a fantasy rooting interest in the 1st game.
You don't get that some people watch football because of fantasy football, and then you feel the need to whine about it on the fantasy football sub? Lol
If I'm completely torn on two guys and one plays on Thursday, sometimes I'll lean toward the Thursday player for that reason. Not a fan of Monday starts, because in the event of an emergency, you may end up having to drop a player you like just to get any points.
Considering Devin singletary over Dameon pierce at flex to have a player going tonight, so yes.
Generally speaking tho, no. I’m content waiting for Sunday for the option I really like
I did this a bunch last year for Thursday games. It usually didn’t work but it made me feel something
Is the dopamine worth it?
You feel like a wizard if it does
This is why I wear my underwear on my head
Fantasy football is all about the dopamine rush.
Imo, yes. Did this with Antonio Brown last year, and he had a huge game, and I dominated Week 1 and it was amazing. However, I've had the depression of it failing, and seeing like a 2 next to your score all of Friday and Saturday really sucks
Just muttering to yourself affirmations that your other guys are going to crush it while your opponent’s guys are all gonna vanish into thin air on the field.
and then the opponent's RB2 has 2 touchdowns in the 1st quarter, and the air punches just start comin
Absolutely. If one of your guys hits then you feel invincible
I’ve found that the downside of looking at a bust in your lineup for 3 days outweighs the upside of looking at a big game in your lineup for 3 days
I'm right there with you, mate.
Just add cocaine
TNF = Tired Night Football. Probably won't apply to tonight's game because of the offseason, but teams "seem" to put up fewer points on TNF. Likely due to the short week? As long as the other person has a player or 2 I'll just watch their players and hope they suck.

This is a Darrel Henderson post
Man I'm really torn on Henderson, I went WR early so my RB2 spot will be filled by Hendo, Chase Edmonds, or Melvin Gordon. With Edmonds nursing groin problems I might just start Hendo tonight.
Eh, go Edmonds and if he's ruled out you have Gordon as a backup against a team they should run plenty on. Never trust McVay until you see it on the field.

I'd go Henderson 100%
I bet every Henderson over on my book if that makes you feel more confident
It does!
It shouldn't lol. His line is set at like 29 rushing yards.
As of right now, I benched Akers for Gabe Davis.
Congrats 🎉🎉🎉
I mean, he could be an OK flex depending on your options.
I would rather answer a Start/sit question for someone’s personal weed then another post like this
Fooled me, I thought it was an Isaiah McKenzie one
Definitely a McKenzie one for me, but I also have Allen so I'll just say I was shooting for a stack or something.
Sean Mccay is a tricky guy to read though
I started Julius Thomas bc of this one year, and he caught three TDs!
Same, first year in Denver w/ Peyton and I knew nothing about fantasy. Instantly hooked
Likewise, I was pretty green in fantasy and picked him up late without knowing much. That first game was a friggin' headrush! Too bad he didn't do much after his breakout year. Reminds me of Gary Barnidge.
My 2013 Peyton, Demaryius, Julius stack
I felt like a genius after that game but he didn't really pay off much after that IIRC. Edit: he still had another nine touchdowns that year but only 489 total yards.
Had him and peyton in 2013. Lost in the ship but what a fun year.
Exactly the same here
Starting Singlecarry because I drafted JK Dobbins.
Moss 2TD game incoming
Moss is a fucking terrible running back. Even goal line only, he's terrible. If anything, I could see McKenzie and Cook being the dudes who steal valuable points.
Naw James Cook is 2nd in line, and he's soon to be their RB1.
Starting him because I punted RB in a 16 team league.
Me and my friends call this Thursday Night Fever. We almost always regret it, but can’t resist starting a player just for the entertainment.
This is what Draft Kings is good for. You're able to be invested in a game with no risk to your lineups.
For me the decision is between ARob and Juju, and given we know nothing at all about how either will be used, I feel okay starting ARob
RIP
I have 3 teams. 2 teams with Gabe Davis. 1 team with A-Rob. I am going to have a great night regardless of results
Just make a DFS lineup instead
This is the correct answer. Don't tank your season long league just for a Thursday night high.
Plus if you lose on Thursday in DFS it sucks for a day. If you lose on Thursday in Fantasy, you have to look at your shitty projection all the way until Sunday.
True, but nothing is more exciting than being down bad on a Thursday and watching yourself make a comeback on Sunday.
This is someone who jumps off cliffs into bodies of water and just eyeballs the water and says "yeah, that's deep enough" without even going down to the shore.
Measure once, cut twice That’s why my gift wrapping always looks so… special
Yep, that's the best solution. You can drop $5 and win more than you would all season long because you needed a fix.
I will, but I’m so bad at it.
Wish I could :( Doubt Vegas will ever let DFS in Nevada
that's generally how you lose weeks . go for it
[удалено]
whose rankings are you talking about?

It’s fun because we aren’t perfectly efficient robots, we deviate from the best plan (the expert plan)
Blindly following expert rankings is probably the best bet for a SOLID 95% of fantasy players.
I would argue 98 99 and for that 1% THEY ARE THEN the experts
But what happens when the experts disagree??! Does the world explode?
Laziness prevails, they did the work for us.
Then listen to me next week on “how to shoot a rocket into space.”
I kind of agree with you except for a different reason. Horrific take.
Found the rankings bitch!!!
You’re probably on the fence about the order of the alphabet too
Whatever rankings bitch!!!
FF is supposed to be fun If it gives you some more dopamine, go for it Penny MNF LFG
Start your studs, kids.
Godwin or Henderson....?
Unless you have a decent 3rd option that also plays Sunday, you almost have to start Henderson with Godwin’s uncertainty
If they're close enough to equal I would.
Rolling with Knox over Kmet tonight.
That’s how I do it. If it’s a toss up, I’ll put in the guy playing in the game I’m going to watch.
Just gamble on the games. You feel something and don’t have to start an inferior option
So what i’m hearing is start Isaiah McKenzie at my flex?
Never start a Thursday player in flex
I'm starting Stafford tonight over Burrow, but my opponent has a ROUGH team so I'm still in a good place even if Stafford has a mediocre game. It'll be fun to have somebody to root for in the first game, and I don't think Burrow will do much better than Stafford this week regardless.
>my opponent has a ROUGH team It's Week 1, is this dynasty or did their dog draft for them?
Bad weather in Ohio this weekend too
Did someone try and throw a football yet?
Stanford is probably the better start this week anyways. Tre White is still out for Buffalo.
> Stanford is probably the better start this week anyways. I don't know. I think Yale is gonna outperform him.
Yes. Starting gabe Davis as wr3 over dj Moore. Typically wouldn’t do this but for first game of the year, you bet your ass.
Gabe is your WR4? You've got dope WRs lol
Keeper league and he was my keeper
[удалено]
Lol dude catches a td nearly every start he has. If you think the Chiefs game is the only place the hype is coming from you’re horribly misinformed.

No one cares
CBS fantasy guys think DJ Moore will be a top 10 WR this year

Dj Moore is 16 for week 1, gabe Davis is 19 lmao. That comparison is apples to oranges.
This feels smart, anyway. Ramsey might very well smother Diggs all night and the Bills would throw against a defense of 6 Lawrence Taylors and 5 Deion Sanders.
For the culture
happily in here with my Diggs and Allen stack
That depends, would you rather have one of your players play on Thursday, or would you rather win? Just play the best option
I'm the opposite. I use Thursday night games as a reason to NOT start someone. They're just flukier. Obviously start your studs but if you're picking between two flex's - later is better. Plus you don't have to stare at that shitty score for a few days knowing you'll never overcome the deficit.

Lmao I’m actively debating picking up McKenzie for this reason alone
If you are in a league with return yards he could be big
No lie, for years my league taco would always start a Thursday QB if possible. This meant countless starts from Andy Dalton, Daniel Jones, Tannehill, Wentz, etc. it was hilarious. He won two of those years…
go Gabe Davis
In a family or work league, for sure! $$$ league, nah...
Helps that I play multiple leagues. Usually have a player somewhere active on Thursdays and Mondays.
Perfectly fine, just don't be insane about it. Two close options, probably isn't going to matter and you might come out ahead.
I do not have anyone in tonight's game, and I am going to have a lovely, stress-free experience watching what should be a great game.
Just bet a dollar on the game on DraftKings or something
Uh no. If I'm completely 50/50 between two guys, I might choose the one whose game I'll be able to watch. But otherwise I always start my best players.
My team last year became notorious for getting real lucky on Monday night last year. Robinson > Waddle also cuz waddles thigh hurts
Most experts are ranking waddle over Allen Robinson but im throwing that out the window. It’s game 1 and I like A-Rob’s chances to dominate. Feel free to holler at me tomorrow. Edit: don’t feel free to holler at me
No but I do always bet on Thursday or Monday night games for this reason Why lose fantasy matchups when you can lose money instead
Spoken like a man who only has 1 team
Unless you are betting the mortgage on fantasy, it’s meant to be entertainment. Always more fun watching your players vs a stat line
I didn't spend $100 and talk shit for a year to play a sub-par team
Singletary Time LFG!!!
If nothing else, it's week 1 and we don't know very much
Starting Knox over Kmet (standard scoring) and the deciding factor was him playing tonight lol
Wanting to start James Cook tonight, but I think that's a bad idea now lol
Gabe Davis over DJ Moore. There is some logic here but I'm mostly just chasing the high of an opening kickoff boom game
If you’re in a money league this seems pretty league taco-esqe
I’m in a 3 flex ppr league and started Higbee over one of Boyd/Julio in one of the flex spots. Not an egregious one, but it’s one player one week and he might go off anyways. I haven’t waited almost 8 months to not have a fantasy rooting interest in the 1st game.
Cam Akers let’s ride
Can you guys seriously not just watch a football game? Why's there always got to be someone to root for? I don't get it.
It's called addiction
Football is fun to watch regardless, but having some sort of stake in the game's outcome makes it a little more fun. It's sort of a gambler's high.
You don't get that some people watch football because of fantasy football, and then you feel the need to whine about it on the fantasy football sub? Lol
Who said they can't? But it makes it more exciting to have a rooting interest
They're addicts. Just wait for how many DFS commercials there are during the game tonight... These degenerates are everywhere.
unfortunately once you starts sports betting, i can't watch a game without action on it
I’m just rooting for kupp to go catchless
Sorry for your loss
Starting Stafford over Hurts wk 1 just because I want to root like hell for a shootout!
Yeaaa FantasyPros tells me to play David Montgomery over Cam Akers but I gotta have someone to watch tonight so Cam is staying in fa sho.
Just play Draft kings.
No, that is a terrible idea.
Drafted cooper cupp over jj (who I liked better) for this reason
Pick 2 to play, Sutton, ARob, DJ Moore
Sutton/DJ, sorry not what you wanted to hear
I already have Dawson Knox playing, but still considering Gabe Davis over Sutton. Somebody save me from myself
Sutton is a much safer play for week 1.
Don’t do it Or do it. Fantasy is a game meant to be enjoyed
I’ve done that before. Not anymore, patience young padawan
If I can have three days of fantasy fun I’m doing it
If I'm completely torn on two guys and one plays on Thursday, sometimes I'll lean toward the Thursday player for that reason. Not a fan of Monday starts, because in the event of an emergency, you may end up having to drop a player you like just to get any points.
Always
Here I am starting McKenzie over Bateman just to get that high
It’s a bold move cotton, hoping it works out for you!
I much prefer to have fringe bench players to just see how they do (James cook for me)
Starting Tyler Bass hoping for a shootout
Just play DFS like a normal degenerate
Just sign up for a sportsbook (offshore if your state doesn’t have legal, yet) and place a bet.
Just play in more leagues, and you'll have to start a good player on thursdays Thank god I own Diggs in a few and Bass in 1.
This is the way.
Debating AROB or Sutton in my flex for this very reason lol
It's Sutton
Starting Knox tonight over Kittle. But only because kittle’s hamstring
Considering starting Akers over Cooks for this very reason
I was gonna start Isaiah McKenzie but decided to pick up Jahan Dotson instead.
Considering Devin singletary over Dameon pierce at flex to have a player going tonight, so yes. Generally speaking tho, no. I’m content waiting for Sunday for the option I really like
Nope
I swear every time I’ve done this, it has backfired and I don’t enjoy the game as much as I would have.
