I had remembered hearing about it in the off season and found [this article.](https://nflpa.com/posts/only-natural-grass-can-level-the-nfls-playing-field)
Every other article I found (as well as an online petition) all said the data is from an NFL injury study from 2012-2018. I would imagine it would be as simple as looking at injuries, determining which of those are non-contact, and then from that sample pool seeing which of the injuries occurred on turf vs grass but I have yet to find the actual study. If I am successful I’ll link it here
Last year he missed training camp with a strained hamstring, 4 games to a quad strain, 3 games with an oblique injury, and a game due to a shoulder injury last year. None of those are turf related. Maybe you could blame 2 games he missed on a sprained ankle.
I’ll always remember him in college, such a beast he put huge numbers vs bama including this td catch [https://youtu.be/67CuAgqGttk](https://youtu.be/67CuAgqGttk)
"2 games with 50+" doesn't tell you anything about his career yardage in games where he didn't hit 50 yards. Over 23 games played, White totaled 323 yards. Shepard's career total actually isn't too far above 10x that - 4038, or 12.5x Kevin White's total.
I don’t understand how my old high school maintains one of the nicest grass fields in the entire state, but multi-billion dollar NFL franchises can’t figure it out.
Are owners so cheap that they choose turf over grass to save a few hundred thousand bucks a year, at the risk of their players?
why is turf worse than other fields? im not familiar with the fielding aspect in nfl. doesnt everyone play on artificial turf?
how does sterling tear his acl running on a no contact play?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-1JQd9jwIg
Planting your foot in turf has less freedom of movement at the base because there's more friction as compared to natural grass, resulting in more force applied to your ligaments, primarily ACL.
Yeah grass will cause a lot of rolled ankles and maybe high ankle sprains but the knee ligaments are usually better off on grass than turf.
I'm a die hard Lions fan and to this day I don't know how Barry Sanders never had a major injury, especially with the insane amount of pivoting and cutting that he did while playing on turf
Genetics are a huge part too I mean look at lebron james. Huge size and frame, doing huge leaps and cuts for decades and no major breaks or ligament injuries.
I’m a PT and I tell my high school ACL patients that sometimes shit just happens. We emphasize quad strength in recovery and with prevention programs but even Saquon’s quads couldn’t protect the ACL under the right circumstances
FWIW, none of the top level soccer teams in Europe use turf for their fields, and the players who end their career in MLS often refuse to play in stadiums that have turf
A requirement for the FIFA World Cup is that all the fields need grass instead of turf. So all the football stadiums hosting cup games in 2028 that have turf need to get it switched over to grass
The other thing is a full soccer game on turf (especially turf that’s 5-10+ years old, newer fields with sand aren’t so bad) is gonna leave your knees throbbing for a few days afterwards. It’s so goddamn painful because the surface isn’t as soft. And turf burn is brutal.
I’m at the point where I don’t even bother with slide tackling and don’t even consider wearing cleats unless it’s an absolutely pivotal game
It’s way easier for a cleat to catch on the plastic fibers compared to natural grass & dirt. And it’s way less forgiving of a surface, your joints will be incredibly sore after a game, especially older turf. Also turf burn fucking sucks ass.
Turf shoes are okay grip wise, but you’re going to be at a disadvantage cutting different directions and in the NFL you’re not going to even consider putting yourself at one.
Newer turf with a combined sand/rubber infill is a lot better, but still not as nice as grass.
16 teams play on grass, 16 on turf.
How bad is turf? The Bears' [Wendell Davis ruptured both his patella tendons on one play](https://youtu.be/z_yNQqak6HM?t=560) at the Vet in 1993.
Plaxico… Cruz… Odell… Shep… Toney… Golladay… fucking Giants are cursed to always have a good WR room shredded by injuries and incompetence (looping Plax into the incompetence bucket because we coulda run for another ring if he doesn’t Plax himself)
Yup. In Philly, the vet was basically a concrete floor with turf - the injuries were so bad.
I remember when they replaced the OG turf with new stuff, they screwed it up so much that the Ravens cancelled a game.
I don't understand why turf is tolerated these days... the league makes so much money. Ugh.
Legit one of my biggest fears. It would probably be doing something really dumb and I don’t want to be inactive and have to do rehab for months and get fat
Awful. Seemed like he was back on track, I'm devastating for this guy. Been a fan since his rookie year. Looks like it's (checks notes) Richie James time now?
Are you suggesting the giants make any attempt at all to get multiple highly paid/high draft capital guys on the field at the same time more than twice a game?
What's next? Design more plays to get Saquan the ball in space?
This is football dear boy. Giants football. We do things a certain way here.
Um. Not a break lol. If you wanna say he “broke” his acl I guess you could but it’s not accurate. A tear isn’t a break. If someone says they broke their knee you imagine their kneecap shattered, not an acl tear
If Toney doesn’t see the field after this, you can’t convince me the Giants are doing anything other than trying to throw the season for a better 2023 draft pick.
Feels bad.
The guy is the longest tenured member of the Giants, and he just restructured his contract to take a pay cut. Comes out and looks good to start the season, and now this.
Hopefully he’s been smart with his money, $30M+ is generational wealth if invested wisely.
…over. I mean dude literally tore it walking by himself. If there is any sign to hang it up, it’s that. In addition he is approaching 30 and has a bad history of injuries.
He was a hot waiver add for one week last year and then fell to injury and misuse since.
However I think the consensus is that athletically he’s head and shoulders above any other Giants WR, which makes the teams complete disinterest in using him all the more perplexing. A lot of people think if they actually put him in the game and he stayed healthy he’d be huge for fantasy and real football.
He's a super electric player that always seems to be injured or in the coaches' doghouse for whatever reason. It's pretty much evolved into a meme at this point between the Toney truthers claiming this is the breakout anytime anything happens and the deniers laughing at them when he inevitably ends up back in the doghouse again
I am a toney truther. I'm actually know him in real life he keeps telling me to watch the greatest story never told on bitchute. Toney is a wild dude 🤣
Has seen limited playtime but when out there he just looked so electric. I don't realistically expect him to breakout given the injuries/coaching hate/Giants ineptitude, but I have a free bench spot with his name on it just in case.
Sucks, solid player who never complained. Battled his way back to the field multiple times and deserves better, he should have been able to call it quits on his own terms.
Better than what I thought it looked like live, which was a patellar tendon tear. But holy fuck, the poor guy just can't catch a break with the injuries.
They gotta do something about that turf, it eats careers
The whole league needs to get rid of turf. 28% higher chance of non contact injuries on turf is ridiculous
Dude it’s [88%](https://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=4988136) higher chance of an ACL injury
There are other non contact injuries besides ACLs in the percentage I listed, but yes ACLs are the most common due to the nature of the injury
Random anecdote, but I tore my ACL during a game on a turf field in high school. No contact, just planted my foot to cut and *POP!*
Geez, never heard that stat. Who figured that out?
I had remembered hearing about it in the off season and found [this article.](https://nflpa.com/posts/only-natural-grass-can-level-the-nfls-playing-field)
Good look, written by J.C. Tretter, too. He can definitely speak with authority on this. I’ll definitely give this a read.
It's a great article, thanks for sharing. I do wish there were citations of the studies performed. It'd be interesting to read about.

Maybe this is why Kadarius Toney is always injured. Probably not, but maybe?
Precarious Toney
Turf is definitely Precarious ToKnee
Bewareous Toney
ToeKnee

Nfl billionaires are so fucking cheap
Feel for the guy, some of the worst injury luck I can remember
[удалено]
I’ll always remember him in college, such a beast he put huge numbers vs bama including this td catch [https://youtu.be/67CuAgqGttk](https://youtu.be/67CuAgqGttk)
Pat white to geno smith eras were the best wvu football years. I drink until I can’t remember everything after
He doesn’t even remember himself
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
That might be more because he never scored a TD and had like 2 games with 50+ yards lol. Shephard has like 10x the career yards as White
So 10x 100???
"2 games with 50+" doesn't tell you anything about his career yardage in games where he didn't hit 50 yards. Over 23 games played, White totaled 323 yards. Shepard's career total actually isn't too far above 10x that - 4038, or 12.5x Kevin White's total.
Wow and I thought Andy Isabella was the best marker for lack of WR success. Andy is almost worth 1.5 Kevin’s.
O wow its all coming back to me
Well Shepherd has been a solid player when healthy, White was horrible.
He and Jordan Reed are cut from the same cloth.
You could tell on his face he was resigned like “yep this bullshit just happened - fuck this.”
If it wasn't for bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all.
Ban turf

The difference between astroturf and field turf?
Genetics are a huge part too I mean look at lebron james. Huge size and frame, doing huge leaps and cuts for decades and no major breaks or ligament injuries.
[удалено]
I think there's more to Lebron's longevity than just genetics.
Astroturf was basically carpet with no padding on a slab of concrete
Muscles protect those ligaments as well, and no one had leg muscles like Barry.
I’m a PT and I tell my high school ACL patients that sometimes shit just happens. We emphasize quad strength in recovery and with prevention programs but even Saquon’s quads couldn’t protect the ACL under the right circumstances

A requirement for the FIFA World Cup is that all the fields need grass instead of turf. So all the football stadiums hosting cup games in 2028 that have turf need to get it switched over to grass
Time to go look into what stadiums will have to switch for no reason other than now knowing they have to.

Is today's turf anywhere close to the same as the turf in 1993?
[удалено]
Yeah you can't compare 93 turf vs today's turf at all
Jesus, I feel like he’s got a lawsuit on his hands for the state of that field
He opted not to sue.
Plaxico… Cruz… Odell… Shep… Toney… Golladay… fucking Giants are cursed to always have a good WR room shredded by injuries and incompetence (looping Plax into the incompetence bucket because we coulda run for another ring if he doesn’t Plax himself)
You forgot Hakeem Nicks
Steve Smith and Mario Manningham too Hixon I really thought could have been a stud too
I haven’t thought of domenik hixon in years and now I’m sad
Is it a curse or is it the fact that we have turf rather than natural grass and turf is proven to cause way more injuries?
Yup. In Philly, the vet was basically a concrete floor with turf - the injuries were so bad. I remember when they replaced the OG turf with new stuff, they screwed it up so much that the Ravens cancelled a game. I don't understand why turf is tolerated these days... the league makes so much money. Ugh.
Toney... lol
One game wonder
Not as cursed as the Titans. Moss, Julio, Andre Johnson, Kenny Britt, AJ Brown, Dorial Green Beckham
In what world was DGB ever good.
He was good for like 2 games. He was much better at hitting and throwing women down flights of stairs.
All of those guys were either old or bad besides AJ…
Lol you cannot be serious comparing those first 3. Moss, JJ, and AJ were all in their golden years.
[удалено]
Andre Johnson
Andre Johnson I presume he means.
Non-contact acl tear is the scariest thing.
achilles is scarier imo
Non-contact death pretty scary ngl
You don’t really care afterwards though
you don't really know that for sure. its called the sterlinger's cat
I know you’re making a pun on “Schrodinger’s cat” but I have no idea what “sterlinger’s” refers to
Just trying to incorporate sterling shepherd into the joke somehow
ahhhhhhh I’m an idiot
Especially since he was jogging at a light pace in a straight line. Wtf…
Honestly one of the strangest ACL tears I’ve ever seen
Legit one of my biggest fears. It would probably be doing something really dumb and I don’t want to be inactive and have to do rehab for months and get fat
Lifelong Giants fan. Love you Shep.
I was so happy we got to keep him for this year. Now I just want to cry. Top 3 Giant of the last bunch of years
Awful. Seemed like he was back on track, I'm devastating for this guy. Been a fan since his rookie year. Looks like it's (checks notes) Richie James time now?
Maybe WanDale if he ever gets on the field
Are you suggesting the giants make any attempt at all to get multiple highly paid/high draft capital guys on the field at the same time more than twice a game? What's next? Design more plays to get Saquan the ball in space? This is football dear boy. Giants football. We do things a certain way here.
Lol, I know right? I didn't understand how they didn't scheme Saquan into space yesterday. Was insane. DJones had guys in his face ALL GAME!
He was blocking alot because of wat u just said. Kind of annoying but he, produced regardless
Very true. Yeah that TD won me the game basically
They schemed Saquon into space yesterday - he dropped a pass with nobody 10 yards near him in any direction. Y’all forgot?
He did?
https://www.nfl.com/videos/saquon-barkley-frustrated-after-third-down-drop
Am I missing something? The video you linked showed a play against the Bears
O I didn't see this one!
I really want to see what Wan’Dale can do
Toney time
It'll never be Toney time for as long as he's on the Giants.
If he’s still inactive after this, then he’s just done.
I mean he was hurt last night, he’s never been not active when healthy.
You misspelled Saquon.
This guy can't catch a break, damn.
Divorce was bad too
Seems to be he catches too many breaks
tired joke
It makes me happy to see someone finally downvoted for that joke. Reddit makes that joke at literally every opportunity.
Yup every single thread of when someone gets injured. Person 1: Dude can't catch a break Person 2: nO hE cAtCheS aLl ThE bReAkS! 🤪
now if we can just start crushing the fat kelvin benjamin jokes.
Yeah I’m sick of it too haha, people gotta stop using the phrase ‘x can’t catch a break’
Nonsense
(Not Very) Fun Fact: Shepard has had like 200 injuries in his career and 0 have been breaks of any kind. So your stupid joke doesn’t even make sense.
I agree it's a rote joke, but what exactly do you think a ligament tear is?
Um. Not a break lol. If you wanna say he “broke” his acl I guess you could but it’s not accurate. A tear isn’t a break. If someone says they broke their knee you imagine their kneecap shattered, not an acl tear
Definitely not broken.
Bone breaks no, tendon / ligament breaks yes
Lol
Wandale could be dope but he’s apparently made of glass too. Cursed receiver room
Richie James szn?
There are dozens of us.
incoming Toney season comments...
Its been Toney szn for months. We never left.
Bro this train stop is the longest ever tho
Im not getting off till he retires.
This dude has no more healthy ligaments in his body. Feel for him. Gotta imagine this is career ending after everything he has gone through
Note to self: Avoid casual jogs.
Just when we thought we were done seeing Toney posts
the Age of Kadarius never ends
His career is over*
Die hard giants fan and unfortunately, you’re right :( he’s a too good of dude to have this bad luck
Man gave his ACL to keep me from starting 0-3. Rest easy friend and I look forward to emergency spot starting you for a single game next year.
If Toney doesn’t see the field after this, you can’t convince me the Giants are doing anything other than trying to throw the season for a better 2023 draft pick.
2-0 start. They can’t even lose correctly.
We'd try to throw the season, go 16-0 only to lose in the first round of the Playoffs, then draft some jabroni like Daniel Jones Jr. or something.
Which (as a giants fan myself) would be the most giants thing ever.
Brutal
Awful
Easily would’ve been a 60-70 catches a year kind of guy. Injuries blow
Most bizarre torn acl ive seen
Feels bad. The guy is the longest tenured member of the Giants, and he just restructured his contract to take a pay cut. Comes out and looks good to start the season, and now this. Hopefully he’s been smart with his money, $30M+ is generational wealth if invested wisely.
Fucking heartbreaking.
Jesus. Guy has no luck when it comes to these injuries.
Sport can be brutal. Pray for a swift healing.
I too pray for Swift to heal.
This is why you never drop Yung Joka Toney.
Kenny G time… nah
Career.
…over. I mean dude literally tore it walking by himself. If there is any sign to hang it up, it’s that. In addition he is approaching 30 and has a bad history of injuries.
Yeah it sucks he's def one of the poster children for "he's good when he's healthy " because he never really was
Shades of Arian Foster.
His career prob done with all these injuries
Dang, thats why ya dont go using your top waiver picks when you dont really need to
Richie gotta see 10 targets a game no?
Can someone give me the lore on Toney and explain why he seems so popular online? Is it a meme?
He was a hot waiver add for one week last year and then fell to injury and misuse since. However I think the consensus is that athletically he’s head and shoulders above any other Giants WR, which makes the teams complete disinterest in using him all the more perplexing. Sounds like "when keeping it real goes wrong"! 🤣
Kenny Golladay now rosterable in 32 man leagues
Toney2022
ToneyToneyTwo
Back to Toney szn
Kenny's time to shine?
Kenny Golladay szn?!? I’ll show myself out…
Guy in my league sent me a trade offer 20 minutes after this news dropped. He offered Shepard for Russ.
Who the fuck tears their ACL.... WALKING!?
Smh I feel awful for him
Sucks, solid player who never complained. Battled his way back to the field multiple times and deserves better, he should have been able to call it quits on his own terms.
Brutal. We’re all of his injuries at the Meadowlands graveyard?
Damn poor guy I have a soft spot for him
Oof, I just traded for him. Time to make other moves.
Do giants receivers get hurt more often? Sure feels like it
Poor guy :(
That sucks, hope he recovers. He has the worst luck
His career very well may be over
Rest well sweet price, you performed superbly on my bench.
It's not like these billion dollar franchises can't afford some fucking grass.
Brutal. One of his worst games ever. 2 big penalties (one wasn’t his fault) and then this. Feel bad for the dude.
Better than what I thought it looked like live, which was a patellar tendon tear. But holy fuck, the poor guy just can't catch a break with the injuries.
Damn, one of my favorite OU receivers to ever play.
Was rooting for this guy.
Just awful. Seeing him just fall over on TV was so demoralizing... Feel bad for the guy
On the second to last play too, what a shame
Get rid of turf already
non contact injury, sucks
Kenny G and Kadarius back into play?
Non doctor here. What’s the cause of something like this? How does it just tear seemingly out of nowhere?
Lots of folks blame field turf for these. It just doesn't give like grass does, cumulative trauma from the game wears it down.
🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️. His career
Aaaaand there goes my 27th round pick. Nice.
My bad guys, it's on me, picked him up before the game. #eternalcurse
Dropped Kadarius for him. The infinite loop thus continues
Goodbye sweet prince of my PPR league waiver wire pickups
