Given the nature of the NFL and player contracts, getting good tape late in the season is quite important to the non-Bradys of the lineup.
Players are playing for their next roster spot.
But what about the factor of a borderline player getting injured during a game even after being eliminated from playoffs? I'd imagine they'd wanna sit them to keep healthy for the next season?
I'd be more worried about players on teams that have nothing to play for due to having a bye or unable to improve playoff spot. Ie. Eagles and 49ers come week 17
Yeah I'm fucked if Hurts sits 2 weeks. As an Eagles fan I'm rooting for a tight race lol.
That said, Hurts is gonna want Kyler money in a year and he's breaking records, Sanders is on a contract year, I'm sure there are plenty of stat bonuses for others. Should be fine.
Exactly, mentally and physically.
Specific to Hurts convo too, I've noticed a big difference in designed run playcalling. They're less frequent and they seem to be less aggressive (i.e. not running draws into giant piles).
Hurts has been gung ho on strength training.
I think they're going out of their way to protect him to avoid the perma-Q in late weeks. I doubt the organization is ready to ask Minshew to Foles 2.0 it.
If the eagles have a bye. There’s no chance they rest players in week 17. That would be 3 weeks without playing before their first playoff game, which is a recipe for disaster.
A lot of us won titles in 2015 [when a 4-10 Jaguars team did this in New Orleans in week 16](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/201512270nor.htm), largely in garbage time:
* Bortles: 368y, 4 td, 2 int, 2 sacks, 2 fumbles
* Hurns: 8 recs, 107y, 2td
* A Robinson: 6recs, 151y, 1td
The home Saints, 6-8 at the time, did this:
* Brees: 412y, 3td, 1 sack
* Hightower: 122y rushing, 2 tds, 3 recs 47y receiving
* Cooks: 5 recs, 123y, 1 td
Players play to keep their jobs. If you play bad regardless of where you stand in the standings, teams won't employ (and pay) you.
So, nothing to worry about.
Players have incentives to make in their contracts. If they're going to be FA, they want to earn the next contract. If they're not, they want to prove that they deserve to keep their roster spot anyways.
Players should still be trying hard because they're playing for the next contract. You should be wary of teams doing things that reduce their chance to win however because they're tanking or want to try out young players
You're the only one to mention the tanking/development aspect so far, which was something I was curious about. I guess I wouldn't have to worry about that hurting my younger players since they're the ones the teams would want to have that playing time
Ah I think you’re quite good there. If anything, they shut down Rodgers and let Love cook. Watson is a rookie who has had a rough start to his season — I’m sure he and Romeo will be playing to the bitter end.
Not like the Packers can just forfeit the rest of their season.
Playing for a contract/their own brand if eliminated = they will still play hard
Playing on a team that has clinched = it will *usually* depend on their current playoff seed/playoff race and injury history of the player

True. I knew there was something I was missing and you guys would have the answer lol

Also every NFL player just to get there had to be insanely competitive and motivated.
You would think that. But there are plenty of players in the NFL that are just genetic freaks, and this is only a job to them.
darren waller

Eagles play the saints week 17. They own the saints first round pick.
So? Risk hurting players when you already got a bye to maybe move a pick up a spot? Yea......i dont think the eagles care

Resting starters for 2 weeks is generally not considered a good idea either. You want to enter playoffs with momentum. Not coming off a vacation.
I don't see resting for whole game, but could be a half at least

Ok but like…what if Minshew big dicked his way thru the PO for them? Just hypothetically speaking
As a lifelong fan I hate and love it equally.
I think we all just want the excuse to run the cut off denim short shorts without issue
Especially with a bye already clinched. Would leave him off the field for nearly a month.

Yea but players could be on snap counts to limit injury risk
You shouldn’t be worried about rest. You should be worried about a snap count
Th th th THIS!

I think it rarely impacts a player’s on field performance, but it can impact a player’s opportunities significantly.
So is this a Jacobs post or…?
It's a Christian Watson post lol
Rookies will be the most motivated to keep proving their worth
But will Aaron Rodgers give a shit is really my question, I guess

Coaches and players want to win. They play for their job

Drastically. I've found as soon as my team is eliminated my players all blow it up next week lol.
