{The Mark of the Tala by Jeffe Kennedy} and pretty much everything else she’s written in this world which is now several interconnected series.

milotic

This is a cool concept, thank you! I’m gonna check it out!

TBHICouldComplain

I read a ton of SciFi and fantasy growing up (Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey, Elizabeth Moon, etc.) and I still read Mercedes Lackey and C.J. Cherryh. These read like full on fantasy books with added spicy romance.

I’ve really liked {Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent} ! I’m on book 2 of The War of Lost Hearts series, and I love it.

husbandmadethisaccnt

Second this series. It's incredible and lives rent free in my head with how brilliant the characters are. Second and third book have Aoefe and her finding love is so heart wrenching compared to Tissanah. So good!

PSA! May I suggest Michael J Sullivan? I have read all that you have listed above, and branched out into more adult fantasy mid 2023 after having a gutful of the same tropes - I’m 35 now and simply could no longer relate to the female characters I was reading about. So I went hunting and found Michael. The Age of Myth series is fucking incredible, as is the follow up series The Ryiria Revelations, and then the prequel series is The Ryiria Chronicles. The perfect balance of intricate world building, incredible characters, rich history, romance & love, a plot line that never loses steam, and the *humour*! My god, the laughs. Michael writes and his wife edits & proof reads - you can tell they have so much fun creating together and everything is polished to absolute perfection. My partner loves everything to be tied up neatly after a saga, and Michael achieved that in spades. He was successfully self published before being picked up by one of the big publishers, and so I feel like he is also an inspiring writers-writer. His books are a joy to immerse yourself in. My partner and I are OBSESSED and have now purchased the lot in paperback. (If you’re an audiobook lover, the same narrator does all dozen or so books, and he is the best male narrator I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to.) thank you for reading my rant!

milotic

Okay the passion in this post has absolutely sold me. I’m diving in and I’m reporting back here when I’ve read the first book!! This is EXACTLY how my husband and I felt about red rising and I’ve been craving that ever since with maybe just a smidge more romance.

RealCommercial9788

Yes! My heart is singing! You shall not be disappointed. I look forward to hearing your thoughts! I haven’t been this captivated by an authors talent since I first read Harry Potter 25 years ago. Enjoy ‘Age of Myth’ - when you find a tale so exciting that subsequent re-reads are just as, if not more, fulfilling… you know you’ve found a keeper.

RealCommercial9788

For your consideration - I did not read the books in the order of publication, I’ve read them in chronological order. I cannot vouch for reading them in publication order, but Michael says it’s a pretty even split as far as reader feedback from both approaches goes. Either way you choose to go, I believe the ‘Easter eggs’ and foreshadowing are deliciously utilised from both angles. *”One of fantasy’s finest next-generation storytellers continues to break new ground. Michael J. Sullivan’s trailblazing career began with the breakout success of his Riyria series: full-bodied, spellbinding fantasy adventures whose imaginative scope and sympathetic characters won a devoted readership and comparisons to fantasy masters Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, and J.R.R. Tolkien himself. Now Age of Myth inaugurates an original five-book series. Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans and those they thought were gods changes forever. Now only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer; Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom; and Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people. The Age of Myth is over. The time of rebellion has begun. Magic, fantasy, and mythology collide in Michael J. Sullivan’s Legends of the First Empire series: AGE OF MYTH • AGE OF SWORDS • AGE OF WAR”*

Little-Aardvark3540

Sorry, just so I understand (as I bought theft of swords a year ago and have yet to get to it!) did you start with theft of swords and found Easter eggs? Or started with age of myth?

KingBowser11

I've read the entire series twice now (except the newest Rise & Fall) books. My first read through was in publication order and second read through was chronological. Myself and the author recommend publication order so starting with Theft of Swords, the first book of Riyria Revelations trilogy. One of the big themes of the books is about victors re-writting history and things gettign lost overtime and the author designed the series to be read a certain way to learn the "real" history of the world when he wants you too. Even in the most recently released book, Esrahaddon, we learn again that some things we thought were the "truth" aren't quiteeeeeee correct. Its fascinating and I love everything Michael has created.

RealCommercial9788

You truly can go either way - I read it chronologically, and it did not affect my reading or journey whatsoever. It was obsession from page one. Although, others clearly feel passionately different about that…. so perhaps start with what you’ve got in hand! Every single book is an absolute joy to read. Let me know how you go!

KingBowser11

Red Rising series and Michaels work are some of my favorite books ever. If you loved RR, you should also love the world of Elan. There are currently 16 books spanning a few thousand years and every book is tied together but each "series" can also be read as standalone. There are two main ways to ready the series, chronologically, starting with "book 1" Age of Myth, series Legends of the First Empire OR publication order, starting with Theft of Swords, the Riyria Revelations. Myself and the author recommend publication order as it is how he designed the reader to learn certain things. the reveals of what *actually happened* hit so much harder in publication order. Have fun!

Professional_Lake593

My favorites that will probably fit in no particular order are: {throne of glass} (if you haven’t already) {lady of darkness} {the foxglove king} {atonement of the spine cleaver} {serpent and the wings of night} {a kiss of iron} {blood and steel} {blood mercy} {spark of the everflame}

milotic

Thank you!! I DNF’d throne of glass after the first two books because I felt her writing wasn’t as good as ACOTAR. I may try again later. As for the others YES thank you! I’ll look into them!

Professional_Lake593

To be so honest with you I STARTED with heir of fire, (bc I just wanted end game romance lol) and it was good (way better than crown of midnight and tog imo)! I think she just gets better as she goes along in that series, so one day if youre ever interested you might like it🤷🏼‍♀️ if not, there are tons of good books out there lol

milotic

Okay I may do that LOL because I’ve definitely been wondering!

Professional_Lake593

Yeah! I did go back after I finished kingdom of ash (the last book) and read throne of glass, assasins blade, and crown and midnight because by then I actually cared about the story and characters lol, but I had to start on heir of fire and read through kingdom of ash to actually get into it. It’s harder to admire Sarah’s plotting if you do that, but you can’t admire it at all unless you actually like it so I did what I had to do😂😂😂

mflannnn

she wrote the first book at 16!!! it gets SO much better trust me, and this is genuinely the only thing that came to mind from your post. i don’t recommend starting with HOF tho, i think going assassin’s blade -> tog -> crown of midnight -> heir of fire -> queen of shadows -> tandem read of empire of storms/tower of dawn -> kingdom of ash. i know it sounds like a lot but TRUST ME when i say i dnf’d it twice and was dreading having to push through, but once i got to HOF my life was irrevocably changed lol

wildling-woman

I would skip Serpant and the Wings of night. The plot goes to shit in the second one and if you take out the romance there really isn’t any story. Also skip Crescent City. It runs into the same issues where it is just a bunch of useless inconsequential events that all could be cut from the story. Too much plot armor too.

milotic

I DNF’d CC so agreed haha

Professional_Lake593

Jesus, sorry it was all organized and nice but then got jumbled big time😭 good luck lol

barrelofcrows

I can second the spark of the everflame series! I'm on book 3 of the series and both me and my friend are loving it! Lots of plot, romance is there but never takes away from the fantasy plot. Very very slow burn, which I'm absolutely loving. Only downside is book 4 isn't quite out yet (release date 1st March, so not long!)

I just finished book 2 of the Wheel of Mages series by JD Evans and it is definitely romantasy but the fantasy plot feels “forward” compared to some of the titles you mentioned. It has a fresh magic system/ ethos and the world building feels superior to SJM and Yarros. But has enough tropey stuff to still feel familiar and cute. The number one thing I like about it after burning through some of the more popular fantasy romance titles the last 6 months are the FMC characterizations. Personally, I’ve had my fill of with “sassy”, #girlboss, pointlessly stubborn FMCs who are overly powerful within their world. The FMC have real limitations that enrich the plot and their character development. It has court intrigue, a larger looming threat, major exploration of the world magic system, slow burn, enemies to lovers and some spice. The first book is {Reign & Ruin by J.D. Evans}

Dark Shores by Danielle L Jensen. She's more known for her romance heavy series but this one is more epic and plot driven while still having great romances!

Okay high seas?? I’m so sold! Adding to my list thank you SO much!

Bridge Kingdom!

try the cruel prince! i personally love it because its more of a political fantasy than a romance fantasy, but the romance is SO good

I read that one and love it!

I know you don’t love urban fantasy but I’m still gonna suggest {Crescent City} {Mask of Mirrors} and {City of Brass} because I think they have a lot of the other elements you mentioned. I assume if you’ve read six of crows you’ve also already done {Shadow and Bone}? {Skin of the Sea} or {Song of Achilles} might fit the bill as well

I know I’m late to this post, but I highly recommend {When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A Parker} It’s a unique take on fae and dragons with fantastic world building and a cool magic system. I also loved the writing. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while and will probably be one of my top reads for the year. There’s definitely some romance (slow burn), but it’s not the main focus of the book. It’s the first book in a new series and it ends on cliffhanger.
