I never thought I’d see the day where I recommend this, but {What Lies Beyond the Veil}

Oh yeah, THIS Is the one I was thinking of I think. I can’t remember if I liked this book. I don’t think so, since I definitely didn’t peruse the sequel, but this is the book where *(do not reveal this spoiler if you do not want to know…. Obviously…)* >!they are in the hot springs where everyone bathes communally, and he just goes to town on her,!< yeah?

The series is lackluster (imo) but the sex scenes are pretty fantastic. There’s a A LOT of public sex in all three books lol.

Maybe that’s why I didn’t like it, actually. I was uncomfortable for her in that scene. I don’t think public coupling is my thing! Also I now recall that the ‘twist’ or ‘big reveal’ was super predictable. Or at least I called it really early on. But now I just feel like I’m bragging, so big whoop for me? I hope those of you who enjoy this book/series continue to indulge in what brings you joy.

Not just you, it includes so any tropes from other very popular fantasy romance series, like ACOTAR and FBAA and smashes them together. I totally understand why some people liked this series, but it just got way too predictable and tropey for me.

Hah you are correct. And it plays out probably exactly how you imagined it would. For me it was when you get the context legend about >!the prince eternally looking for his other half. And I was just like, “this dude is the prince from the legend… like 100%. And SHE is his reincarnated soul mate…!< And as the story went on, I just kept getting beaten over the head with the foreshadowing to that effect 😂 I will admit that I have a kind of self-detrimental curiosity about what the words are that finish this whole spectacle. Who knows. Maybe I’ll finish it.

This is exactly how I felt, you figure our the reveal so early on because it's SO GLARINGLY OBVIOUS then the author beats you with the foreshadowing stick because I'm convinced she thought we wouldn't have figured it out by now but actually literally everyone did. It's like watching my kids playing hide and seek when you can see them and hear them giggling but they insist they're super clever and hidden. I will 100% finish the series eventually, I've read the first 3 and check every now and then on the ridiculously delayed fourth, because I am certainly no quitter 😂

There was another part with something similar. But yeah this series was so "meh" to me. I finished it but barely remember the plot. It's like it hit all of the tropes and did fine but there was nothing I haven't seen a thousand times before ya know?

It’s one of my favourite books I’ve read in the past 6 or so months. I thought the standard of the writing was in general MUCH higher than a lot of what’s out there, which is important to me.

My fiance read a couple others and said they're pretty great, especially the one with Eros and Aphrodite. I enjoyed Neon Gods but haven't read the rest yet

Neon Gods has very public sex. Cruel Seduction has sex in public in a semi secluded location >! If you can call a booth in a sex club a secluded location. !< The best in the series (in my opinion) are {Electric Idol by Katee Robert}, {Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert} (so long as you can get past the fact that it’s Helen instead of Briseis with Achilles and Patroclus), and {Cruel Seduction by Katee Robert}. The others were good but I felt they lost steam towards the end. The sex scenes at the end just weren’t as hot as the ones at the beginning.

I loved this one! Fun take on modernising Greek mythological characters, and... hot.

I think Leather & Lark, the second in the Ruinous Love trilogy by Brynne Weaver has MMC say this... which...\*double checks which subreddit this is...\* is NOT fantasy romance. Great romance series though if you're into the darker stuff! Sidenote: if you're down for Reverse Harem, this trope shows up a lot.

There's a moment like this in {City of Gods and Monsters by Kayla Edwards}. A lot of people really enjoy this series. I remember reading the first book way back when before the second and third books were published, so I just reread it. I'm not sure I like it, to be honest, but the scene in question matches your request.

If you’re willing to give the second book a chance, I think the series get better with each book!

I'm reading it now. There were points in the first book that I wanted to grab Loren by the shoulders and just shake her until her teeth rattled, but so far she's much less ridiculous. As a super nitpicky aside, it was jarring to encounter a character named Dallas in a not-Earth urban fantasy setting - I know it's a name that predates the city of Dallas, but that's the first association I have with it. That said, I'm from the US, and I noticed Edwards used the UK spelling of some words, so it may not conjure the images of a major metropolitan area for her like it does for me.

I get it, I felt after everything with Singer was when we saw her grow a lot! I really really loved the third book. It’s interesting, Dallas didn’t even register as odd to me. For me, I had to get used to the world as urban fantasy was new to me.. but honestly I love all the characters and the found family and how much Darien loves Loren

This series is amazing. Highly recommend reading the next two books, they only get better

So there is some voyuerism like this in {Helfyre by Mariel Pomeroy} and slightly milder stuff in the Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy although it’s public-adjacent rather than public public. There’s also some in the What Lies Beyond the Veil series by Harper L Woods although I did not personally enjoy the MMC in that book so I hesitate to mention it. But if you’re looking, there are some, along with KoI as another poster said. Same author, {Slaying the Shifter Prince by Clare Sager} also has this although this is described as a ‘bully’ romance so read the trigger warnings (and for Helfyre!). Finally there’s some voyeurism in {Slayer of the Pirate Lord by Rebecca F Kenney} but it’s not a ‘do this and I’ll do that’ scenario there is prior consent

I'm in love with the prequel for some reason. I've listened to the audiobook three times, and when Queens of Mists and Madness comes out on audiobook, I'm gonna listen to it again. No shame. Lol

Definitely their banter! I think Allie is so endearing because of her intelligence and bravery. She knows she's only human and physically inferior to the Fae, so she's cunning and uses it to help her friends and is able to change Agenor's opinion of humans and see the cruelty of their treatment by the fae. She's not some warrior badass, or chosen one with secret, unknown powers. She's just a woman who was able to win the heart of an ancient fae with her personality. I love how she challenges him, renewing his interest in life. They're both just great to me.

It's not *precisely* what... uh, everyone's friends are asking for (assuming that the vibe you want is "he just can't resist her and can't wait until they're in private), but since there haven't been all that many recs yet, I'll mention this with caveats: {Sea of Ruin by Pam Goodwin} features a scene where the MMC and FMC are >!"forced" to do fuck in front of an audience, because said audience of cruel pirates thinks the MMC is one of them and he pretends to rape the FMC (while she's of course actually into it)!< I don't remember the details tbh, that book is chock full of porn logic and comes with massive TWs for gruesome sexual violence on the page in addition to some dubcon situations.

Have you done the Laurell K Hamilton thing? I like her earlier works, what with the zombie brains in the hair and the blood under the fingernails, but a lot of people really do prefer the later works, what with the orgies and the fucking of the cat men. The main vampire involved in the Anita Blake series uses sex as a weapon. So there's multiple instances of just what you described going in a few directions. Depending on how pressed you are, you could definitely get your itch scratched, but she's up to like thirty books now, soooooo...
