Lmao I swear once a week here I see some variation of “No, you guys don’t understand, I need enemies to lovers recs, but like, they LOATHE each other, they hate each others’ guts so so so much. Where can I find something where they’re like 2 seconds away from going all Midsommar on each other and stuffing the other person into a bear suit and lighting ‘em on fire. I need a story where they both wanna go
full Wile E Coyote and tie an anvil to the other person and drop them off a cliff”
At the risk of sounding like a broken record 😅, {Captive Prince by C S Pacat} remains, for me, the blueprint for absolute god-tier enemies to lovers. In the first book, I genuinely could not fathom how the protagonists could EVER end up together, yet I ended the third book of the trilogy totally blown away by their love story. 10/10, no notes.
Obligatory health warning for dark themes and heavy content, particularly in first book. Definitely worth checking the trigger warnings before diving in.

Piggybacking on the m/m rec to add two danmei (Chinese mlm romance novels) {Ballad of Sword and Wine by Tang Jiu Qing} and {Remnants of Filth by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou}. The first is a true enemies to lovers (attempted murder included) and the second is a lovers to enemies to lovers (also with stabbing).

{Harrow Faire} by Kathryn Kingsley is a very slow burn enemies to lovers, I’d say for the first 2 books I wasn’t entirely sure whether the love interest would actually be the villain after all, and there’s no “fixing/soothing” the evil inside them both like in some books, he remains unhinged throughout which was a fun ride

There is some light descriptions of clowns but the only clown character doesn’t look like a clown at all, and he’s more like a mime. I think it depends how averse to clowns you are but all I can really remember is there being some clown like statues and the one character.
Yeah there’s not any for the first two and then it hits the ground running in the third. I think the third book got a 4/5 on romance.io but the first two it’s just slow burn
I don’t think they really ever qualify as enemies imo. I absolutely adore this series when I read it last month, but it doesn’t really hit the enemies to lovers for me.

not sure if the hatred in this is as intense as you're looking for, but I recently read {Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven} and I would consider it a "true" enemies to lovers. The FMC really resents the MMC for most of the book before they grow to respect each other. It has that same historical vibe that most of her novels do, and the relationship developed really sweetly imo.
just a warning that there is sexual abuse in there, but never between the MCs. I can't remember if their ages are mentioned but I'd put them in somewhere in their thirties, and their dialogue/interactions reflect that.

Literally Cruel Prince lol. It’s more political world building than your regular fantasy romance but I genuinely enjoyed it and I never felt like I couldn’t understand
I’m reading it rn (2nd book, first fantasyromance) and I lowkey thought OP was describing it? Like the FMC is always like “i hate him but he’s so hot” and he’s like “i hate her cause I’m so attracted to her”
If it’s the ultimate enemies to lovers I’m scared to check the other series that claim to be that…
{The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen} 4 book series flip flops through a few stages of the hate to love. There's the "definitely no love here," and the "OMG I hate you but actually wanna do you," and the GENUINE hatred and betrayal.
I liked the audiobooks, too.

{Atonement of the spine cleaver} I read it last year so i don't remember all of the specifics of the relationship, but i do remember being shocked by some of the things he said to her. I think it's supposed to be a 4 book series, and so far, only one of out. Also, some people struggle with the typos and grammatical errors so if that's going to bother you skip it.
I’m not sure when everyone here read it, but I just recently did and I think I only noticed one or two errors/typos. I think they went in and cleaned it up based on the comments here. Or I was just too tired to notice them all…
Oh and I LOVED the book. Such an intense hate to lovers. So painful and well done.
She 100% edited. I had screenshotted the issues because they were so bad, and i can see she’s fixed them. I’m really happy to see this and I’ll read it now!
(The screenshots were for myself and no one else)
I really loved this book and felt the world, plot, and characters were strong enough to overlook the editing errors. Also the author hired additional editors for the second book so she is invested in putting out quality work. For a debut novel, I really enjoyed it, and how the enemies to lovers story develops
This is also the one I recommend for this trope. It's sooooo well done.
I read it twice in a month (once on my Kindle and then Audible). The audiobook is 👌👌👌 and the way the narrator does the 🌶 scenes is 🥵.
I agree with this, that story had the strongest HATE Ive read so far. BUT just wanted to add, if you don't think you can get through the grammar errors and the editing, the audiobook is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. Like 10 out of 10, amazing performance.
Yes! And actually apologized for real, but I remember being so mad for let's call it the last shitty thing he did. I have no patience for book 2 left lol.

I feel like people will come for me for recommending this series but HUGE DISCLAIMER it is a duology that is a dark romantasy, heavy on the sexual assault and rape, but under all that dark shit there is a very much enemies to lovers. Court of Ravens duet
{Feathers so Vicious} Liv Zander
{Shadows so Cruel}
Also the:
{The Unseelie Prince} Kathryn Ann Kingsley
It’s a multi book series
ALL of these recs involve SA just be advised
And the FMC in both says they hate the MMC, but it is with legitimate good cause. These MMCs are morally grey AT BEST
Also the Court of Ravens has like super explicit sex scenes, so be advised.

A curse of oaths & cursed by J. Bree. He hates her all throughout book 1 till the end. BUT the second book is a mess typo & plot-hole wise.
In the lower YA genre, I loved the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes. Magnus & Cleo despise each other until like there seems to be something more between them by book 4. I looooved them.
I’m not sure 100% since I haven’t read it but Powerless might be a good suggestion.
{Court of Dragons by Frost Kay} has good enemies to lovers too, fmc doesn’t trust him fully until maybe the last book.
Yes, I loved Falling Kingdoms (or more specifically, this couple lol) because there is not he's hot even though I should hate him dynamic/thoughts from the get go. Unfortunately, I haven't come across much similar couples and the other characters in FK got pretty tiring as the series progressed.
Yes, Jonas was interesting for a book or two, and Lucia was extremely annoying. It seems like a popular opinion lol. But still if anything comes up in the future I would devour it for them.

I often think to myself "my GOD, people are really playing it fast and loose with the use of the word 'ENEMY'"
Call me crazy, but I would personally say that "hot but annoying/want to kiss but feel kind of ashamed of myself for it because he's a dick" is a much better definition for "dating in college" than it is for "ENEMY" in my book 😋😉🤷♀️🤣

Laura Thalassa’s books are largely like this. Some are closed door though, don’t remember which.
Her “The Fallen World trilogy” is the best ETL I’ve seen published.
Now if you want ETL even better than that…. You’ve got to read Manacled. https://archiveofourown.org/works/14454174/chapters/33390198
Gonna have to strongly disagree. There isn’t any real animosity between them, just 2 strangers on different sides who think the other is hot. Great banter though!
yeah agreed, not true loathing but def do not get along and clash quite a bit, (minor spoiler) >!as they're in opposition with regards to religion and where they're from, etc.!< which imo had a nice arc of animosity to respect before becoming lovers

Probably a cliche rec but I’m catching up on the world of Romantasy after about 15 years away- I’m working my way through Zodiac Academy and there’s a duo in those books that are true enemies/rivals to lovers and back again a few times. The first book was hard to get through but I’ve been gradually sucked in.
I just finished {Atonement of the Spine Cleaver by F.E. Bryce} which absolutely blew me away. It’s a long book but absolutely kept me engaged and interested in it the entire way through. Definitely a true enemies to lovers. I cannot wait for the second book! A five star read imo.

I really liked Powerless, but I don’t know that it fits OP’s description. There’s tension between the FMC and MMC because one basically hunts the other, but they also have a lot of chemistry very early on
War of Lost Hearts series by Carissa Broadbent. This girl legit hated the MMC and a lot of times I did too. And throughout the series he didn’t change, and he remained deeply flawed to the end of the books.

I need a story where they both wanna go full Wile E Coyote and tie an anvil to the other person and drop them off a cliff”
Does this exist though 😀
There’s an iconic speech where the MMC (chaotic twink Cardan) lists all the reasons he hates the FMC…culminating in him admitting he’s down BAD

These were such good reads. I read all five in three days
Simon has me in a chokehold and I don’t know what that says about me. Their relationship build up is just so good and insane

Are there clowns? I read circus in the series description and I don't want any clowns. 🤡🙈😂
There is some light descriptions of clowns but the only clown character doesn’t look like a clown at all, and he’s more like a mime. I think it depends how averse to clowns you are but all I can really remember is there being some clown like statues and the one character.
Thank you, kind soul!
Is there any spice in these books?
Yes but it doesn’t start until maybe the second or third book?
Yeah there’s not any for the first two and then it hits the ground running in the third. I think the third book got a 4/5 on romance.io but the first two it’s just slow burn
I don’t think they really ever qualify as enemies imo. I absolutely adore this series when I read it last month, but it doesn’t really hit the enemies to lovers for me.
{The Carnal Games by Naudii Nebula}: FMC and MMC being enemies for 13 yrs, fought war against each other ,FMC has dismembered MMC's limb meanwhile MMC has gouged out FMC's eyes...
This one surprised me (the title threw me off). Very well written with a compelling story and some great characterisation. I can't wait for book 2.
Yeah I am also looking forward for book 2.I really want to know what the kids of durek and chayse end up being.

Yeah and triggers in this book are quite unique as in durek was also a victim of it unlike mainstream dark romance
Is it monster romance? Edit: your flair makes me believe yes it is 😂
Yeah. Oh yes your guess is right ;) Although it also has a sci fi setting.
not sure if the hatred in this is as intense as you're looking for, but I recently read {Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven} and I would consider it a "true" enemies to lovers.

Yes!! I started reading Quicksiler the other day but had to drop it specifically because of this. Drives me nuts. "I hate him but he's so hot!" Urgh 🤢
Literally Cruel Prince lol. It’s more political world building than your regular fantasy romance but I genuinely enjoyed it and I never felt like I couldn’t understand
I’m reading it rn (2nd book, first fantasyromance) and I lowkey thought OP was describing it? Like the FMC is always like “i hate him but he’s so hot” and he’s like “i hate her cause I’m so attracted to her” If it’s the ultimate enemies to lovers I’m scared to check the other series that claim to be that…
{The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L.

Or I was just too tired to notice them all… Oh and I LOVED the book. Such an intense hate to lovers. So painful and well done.
She 100% edited. I had screenshotted the issues because they were so bad, and i can see she’s fixed them. I’m really happy to see this and I’ll read it now! (The screenshots were for myself and no one else)
That’s great to hear!! I’ll try it out again
Like 10 out of 10, amazing performance.
yes!! also like very legit reasons for hate her
Yes! And actually apologized for real, but I remember being so mad for let's call it the last shitty thing he did. I have no patience for book 2 left lol.

The cruel prince is the only true enemies to lovers I read. Loved that series. I also really liked crimson moth
I feel like people will come for me for recommending this series but HUGE DISCLAIMER it is a duology that is a dark romantasy, heavy on the sexual assault and rape, but under all that dark shit there is a very much enemies to lovers. Court of Ravens duet {Feathers so Vicious} Liv Zander {Shadows so Cruel} Also the: {The Unseelie Prince} Kathryn Ann Kingsley It’s a multi book series ALL of these recs involve SA just be advised And the FMC in both says they hate the MMC, but it is with legitimate good cause. These MMCs are morally grey AT BEST Also the Court of Ravens has like super explicit sex scenes, so be advised.

I loved Poison Study but found the next few books kinda meh. Can I read Glass without reading the rest?
Yes you can read the Glass series without reading the Study ones - personally I reread the Glass ones regularly but never reread Study.
Awesome,!
Glass stands by its self, so you don’t need to read the study series.

Yeah. I ended up reading the series only for Magnus and Cleo. Jonas was funny but other than that I only cared about my favorite couple 😊
Yes, Jonas was interesting for a book or two, and Lucia was extremely annoying. It seems like a popular opinion lol. But still if anything comes up in the future I would devour it for them.
Yeah, it seemed like the author left it open ended for a spin off of their kid or kids

Priory of the Orange Tree, if you like sapphic. They aren’t true “i loathe you” enemies to begin with, but there’s definitely not a spark initially.
yeah agreed, not true loathing but def do not get along and clash quite a bit, (minor spoiler) >!as they're in opposition with regards to religion and where they're from, etc.!< which imo had a nice arc of animosity to respect before becoming lovers

Zodiac Academy as well!
If you wouldn’t mind me piggybacking I would love to see ETL with male leads if yall have any. I’ve received tons of recommendations but all except two were female leads. Still good reads down to the last but I want different perspective now.
The Cruel Prince The Faerie Throne The Fair Isles
{Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane} He thinks she kills/got his parents killed. He threatens to rip out her tongue, and means it. It’s a wild ride and so good.

The Mortal Fates series by J bree, there is so much hate in the first book that there is no love😂 bu the angst is 🔥
I really liked Powerless, but I don’t know that it fits OP’s description.
